In Section One volleyball Thursday, May 6, the Comets clinched the final league playoff spot with a 3-0 win at McCaskey.
The win pushed Manor’s record to 5-5, ahead of both the Red Tornado and the Falcons, both 3-8. But it wasn’t easy. The Comets needed a late game push in all three sets to win 25-18, 25-18, 25-20. Will Carson (9 kills) Riley Walton (9 kills) and Greyson Schatz (6 kills) all came up big at the net as did Chris Andreycheck who came off the bench with four kills. Isaac Hopstetter (2 aces) and Max Bushong anchored the defense with ten digs apiece and Wyatt Rohrer, with 34 assists, 1 block and two aces also had a solid game.
On the road again Saturday, the Comets suffered a 3-0 (25-14, 2513, 25-10) loss to Central Dauphin (16-1), the top ranked 3A team.
Back in league play last Monday, Manor, with the defense getting stronger as the match progressed, swept the series against the winless
Streaks 25-19, 25-11, 25-5.
Bushong anchored that defense with 14 digs and Walton put up a pair of blocks and put down 15 kills. Luke Thomas added two aces and Rohrer dished out 30 assists.
In their last match of the regular season, the Comets fell 25-19, 25-12, 25-15 to Warwick.
TENNIS
Penn Manor’s success on the tennis courts continued Thursday,
May 6 with a 4-1 victory over South
Western in the team portion of District Three 3A competition. Curtis
Rabatin (6-2, 6-2), Stefo Billis (6-0, 6-1) and Maxwell Davis (6-3, 6-3) wrapped up singles action convincingly while Nico Man and Paul Karpouzis, at No. 2 doubles “gave us the critical third point to win the match,” said head coach Amanda Pryzbylkowski. “This is the first year they have played on the team have improved at an incredible rate since picking up a racket in March.”
In singles play, Rabatin, the 4th seed, settled for fourth place with two wins and two losses. He blanked Veraja Patel (Wilson) and topped Cooper Wheeler (Red Lion ) 6-2, 6-0 to get to the semifinals where he lost 6-2, 6-2 to top seed and eventual winner Andreas Wingert (Hershey). In a battle for third, Rabatin slipped 6-2, 6-3 against No. 2 seed Samy Schwab (Central Dauphin).
Billis also competed in the singles tournament. He opened with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over Dallastown’s Daniel Wu then lost to eventual second place finisher Andy Chen (Hershey) 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
In semifinal action last Tuesday, the Comets were shut out by No. 2 seed Hershey (15-0). Rabatin again faced Wingert and fell short 6-0, 6-2 while Billis took on Chen and also lost, 6-3, 6-2. The Trojans ran the table in straight sets in the other three matches.
Looking to qualify for states, the Comets took care of business and No. 5 Palmyra, with a hard-fought 3-2 thriller. Rabatin had the toughest match, beating Aidan Mahaffey 6-7 (2), 6-0, 7-5 while Billis and Davis both won in straight sets to clinch the win.
BASEBALL
The Comets put together three competitive outings over the last week but fell short 4-2 against Cedar Crest on May 7, 2-0 to Dallastown one day later and 5-4 last Monday against Elizabethtown. They have lost eight games this season by three or fewer runs.
The Comets, down 2-0 against Crest, tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bags and scoring when QJ Hanna was hit by a pitch and Brad Frey singled.
Then, with two outs, Crest took advantage of an error and a base hit to score the winning runs. The Comets loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half but missed the hit that could have changed the outcome.
Max Jesberger fueled the six-hit attack with a 3-4 effort.
Dallastown scored the only run they needed with a two out double in the third and made it 2-0 with a solo homer one inning later while denying the Comets a single hit.
At home last Monday the Comets jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings only to see the Bears rally with five in the top of the sixth. The hosts finished the season at 4-13 overall.
SOFTBALL
The Comets wrapped up the regular season last Tuesday, May 11 with their fourth straight win, an 11-0 shutout, their seventh, over Solanco, and improved to 17-3 overall. Manor connected for six of their 13 hits in the first inning, scoring four runs. They added four more in the second and ended the game early, plating three in the fourth. Bella Peters scattered four hits in the win.
Prior to Solanco, the Comets earned an 11-0 final at Cedar Crest, Friday, May 7. Manor pounded out 14 hits in six innings with Trout going 3-4 with a pair of doubles, one triple and three RBIs. Rineer, Patterson, Gable and Goss also added two hits each. Peters earned the three-hit win with eight strikeouts and one walk.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
The boys’ lacrosse team wrapped up their regular season with a crushing 21-2 win over Cedar Crest May 6 and two days later dumped non-league Twin Valley 15-5, pushing their overall record to 12-5.
“We try to control the little things (communicating, hustling, playing with heart and grit, being a good teammate) that do not take lacrosse skill,” said head coach Zack Charles of the team’s success this year. “This team has done that and more. Four of our five losses are to two teams, Hempfield and Township.”
Behind Clayton Hollinger’s seven goals and three assists, the Comets swept the series against the Falcons. They took control with a 13-0 run through the second and third quarters. Isiac Nafziger (4g, 1a), Dylan Keene (3g), Benedict Flinchbaugh (2g, 2a), and Eli Warfel (2g) rounded out the multiple goal scorers.
Saturday C. Hollinger poured in six goals, dished out a pair of assists and broke the school record for points in a season. “Clayton finished with 84 goals and 25 assists (109 points), breaking the previous record held by assistant coach Brady Charles set in 2013,” Charles pointed out.
Manor took charge with an 8-1 first half effort. Nafziger backed Hollinger with three goals and two assists and Jack Barley (2g, 1a), Keene, Cole Spezialetti, Aidan Gerlach and Logan Dittenhafer, with one goal each, also contributed.
TRACK
The Comets came away with some notable performances at the Henderson Invitational in West Chester May 8. Most impressive was Graham Thomas with a 14 second PR in the 3200. His 9:08.73 breaks the school record he set two weeks ago and is 4th fastest 3200 in L-L League history.
Kaleb Kabakjian was another record breaker, dropping eight seconds off his PR with a time of 4:39.59 in the mile. “This is eight seconds off the freshman record set by Joel Burkholder in 2012,” said Shober.
Eden Crisman finished third in the pole vault with an 11-8.
Back in league play last Monday, the visiting Falcons handed the boys’ an 89-61 loss while the girls’ also fell victim to the Falcons, 92-58.
Kyle Murr’s jumping hat trick sparked Manor’s first place finishes. Murr secured the long, triple and high jumps while the pole vaulters swept the field. Leo Medvedkin finished first, Brayden Clow was second and Drew Lebo took third.
Dorian Zimmerman (javelin), Jaryd Klienhaus (shot put), and Aaron Eaby (discus) rounded out first place finishes.
The girls’ found the bulk of their success in the field with Maddie Whited (triple), and Jalyn Clow (discus) earning firsts. On the track, Ann Bibus won both the mile and 3200. But the highlight was Chrisman breaking the pole vault record by clearing 12-7. The old record, 12-6, was set by Jocelyn Witmer in 2008. “And Alyssa’s high jump, a PR, cleared five feet to win the meet,” said Shober.
