Event To Bring Civil War History To Life

School Launches New Math Program for second- and third-grade students. The effort started with teachers analyzing the mid-year Acadience math and NWEA MAP Growth assessment data and identifying students’ addition and subtraction fact skills as an area of recommended growth. Working together, the team developed a plan to improve scores for those specific skill areas in each class by the end of the year. Second-grade teacher Sophie Dodge and thirdgrade teacher Angela Dietzel sought the support of IU13 math consultant Judy Trusz, as well as Lancaster Mennonite librarian Sarah Fichtner and IU13 math specialist Janelle Lammey. Through a series of Angela Dietzel (standing), third-grade classroom observations teacher, leads a math activity. and data meetings, the

team shared that over the two months, the data collected by the teachers showed that the students participating in Math Buddies demonstrated significant growth across the board and were on track to meet the team’s goals before the end of the school year. The team also found that all the students enjoyed Math Buddies. In speaking with supervisors at the IU13, Trusz commented, “I am so impressed with what this group of women from New Danville has accomplished in the past two months when they focused on math facts and differentiation by combining efforts of many people on staff.” Principal Lindsay Carson noted, “This collaboration and innovation is truly a strength of Lancaster Mennonite - the partnership between staff members and the belief that all of our students are truly ‘our’ students, that their progress is everyone’s responsibility.”

team formed small groups of students across both grade levels that would meet for 15 minutes per week for targeted addition and subtraction strategy instruction specific to their current level. Each Wednesday morning, the four New Danville staff members now meet with their groups for a time called Math Buddies. The group leaders have used all sorts of games, speed activities, direct instruction, technology-integrated activities, and other evidence-based strategies to engage students in fun and collaborative multi-age fact practice time. The Lancaster Mennonite values of empowering lifelong learning and nurturing curiosity are at work during Math Buddies time, as students make new friends, laugh together, and challenge one another to strive for academic excellence. Two months into the initiative, the team again met with Trusz. The
A Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations event will be held at the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum and Garden, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The event will be open on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camps will also be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 20. At the Living History camp, re-enactors will portray President Abraham Lincoln, first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, and their sons Robert and Tad as they were in 1865. People may visit with the family members throughout the weekend and participate in a family sit-down at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tad will be present on Saturday only.

Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, will hold a basement sale on Saturday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to noon. The sale will be set up in two large rooms in the church. Shoppers will find household goods such as linens, books and puzzles, works of art, home decor, gifts, and furniture items like TV cabinets and tables. In addition, there will be an assortment of homemade food items available for takeout, including pulled pork, vegetable beef soup, and chili. Boy Scout Troop 4 will serve hot dogs with chips, a beverage, and dessert on the back lawn. Toppings will include ketchup, mustard, onions, and sauerkraut. Bethany has sponsored Scouting at the church for more than 60 years. Parking and a handicappedaccessible ramp are located at the rear of the church. Shoppers can also enter via the front stairs that lead to Donegal and Westminster halls. Proceeds from the basement sale will benefit local charities.

Daniel L. Diehl, MD Announces His Retirement June 30, 2022 He has been a family doctor in Willow Street, PA for 38 years (two years in Quarryville). He took over for Dr. Donald Witmer August 6, 1984. Dr. Diehl works at Penn State Health South, Lancaster, 2605 Willow Street Pike N., Willow Street, PA. He was in solo practice for 32 years until he and four other physcians joined Penn State Health in 2016. Dr. Diehl would like to thank all of his patients, his doctor colleagues, partners and specialists, Daniel L. Diehl, MD present and former staff, two ex-wives, First Methodist Church, and his 10 wonderful children, and added in-laws for blessing his life through the good and the tough times over the last 40 years. The Friends of Lancaster Public Library will host the 67th annual Big Book Sale in the former Bon-Ton building at Park City Center, 600 Park City Center, Lancaster. The book sale will run on Monday, May 23, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Wednesday, May 25, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 25 will be half-price day. The book sale is marking its third year in the former BonTon building, which offers more than 150,000 square feet. Customers may browse through 250,000-plus used books, along with thousands of other items including vinyl records, sheet music, audio books, CDs, DVDs, board games, and puzzles. Separate costs have been set for paperbacks and for hardbacks. Individually priced books, includ-
ing collectible and current fiction and nonfiction, will be for sale. Credit cards will be accepted, and parking is free. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Keegan Dings went over the 100 career goals mark Friday, May 6, leading the Comets to a 14-12 victory over Central York with a team-high five goals and four assists. “Keegan scored 33 goals last year and had one as a freshman,” pointed out head coach Anneli Starry. “She is currently at 103 career goals.” The Comets fought from behind in this one. Trailing 7-6 at halftime, Manor outscored the hosts 8-5 and improved their overall record to 10-6. Maddie Weber finished with a hat trick while Erin Shipley and Mia Jones both scored twice. Jarliah Ferko and Johanna Bonnici each added one score. Mackenzie Nafziger (2 saves) and Brooklyn Ayala (1 save) teamed for the win in goal. The Comets are currently 12th in the District Three 3A rankings. The top 12 teams qualify. Dings, Shipley, and Grace Gerner were recently recognized as L-L League honorable mention all-stars while Weber, for the senior with the highest GPA or class rank on the team, made the all-academic team. SOFTBALL The softball team clinched the Section One title, their first since 2018 and 11th overall, when Hempfield upset Warwick on Thursday, May 5, and the Comets took care of business against McCaskey. Their 14-0 shutout improved their Section One mark to 13-1. Manor jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and ended the scoring with a four run fourth, claiming their third shutout in five innings.
