Penn Manor e-sports team honored at Capitol

Players on Penn Manor High School’s e-sports team recently visited the state Capitol, where they were recognized for their achievements of the past year. On April 24, state Rep. Ismail Smith-Wade-El recognized the players on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Penn Manor High School’s Rocket League team acquired first place in two tournaments this year: the Rocket League High School E-sports League State Championship in January and the Harrisburg University PA Cup in April. Nathan Mintzer, captain of the varsity Rocket League team, credited his team’s success with effective strategizing and communication. “We tried to look at our opponents and find out what their weaknesses were,” Mintzer said. “We also worked a lot on making sure we had a good bond as a team. Being more than just teammates and knowing each other as people were key components as well.”

Penn Manor High School’s other e-sports teams have seen a successful year as well; the school’s Overwatch team climbed to the playoffs after an undefeated season. “We got to know each of our players and played around each of their strong suits,” said Brock Kirstner, captain of the Overwatch team. “We had to evolve our strategy as well so we weren’t sticking to the same approach every time.”

Players on the Minecraft, League of Legends, Minecraft and Brawlhalla teams were among those recognized at the state Capitol. “Communication is a core piece of each team,” said Scott Herzog, head coach of the e-sports program. “In Overwatch, it’s about the map and positioning; in Rocket League, it’s calling out where players are on the field. It’s like any other sports you play, and the players learn important skills.”

Lasagna Love delivers kindness

There’s something comforting about a lasagna. That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need. Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna.

“We are here to help anyone in need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.”

Mauer began volunteering with Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers.

“People can sign up for a lasagna if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https://lasagnalove.org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from life for a moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.”

Nearly half a million served

“There are similar programs, but to the best of our knowledge there is no one that does exactly what we do,” stated Brad Peterson, executive director with Power Packs Project, which delivers ingredients to make a nutritious meal to families in Lancaster, York, and Lebanon counties. Peterson noted that last year, the organization provided nearly half a million meals made up of more than 500,000 pounds of food.

Power Packs was founded in 2009 by Joan Espenshade, who was volunteering at a Lancaster city school when she saw some students lined up to get breakfast and others visiting the nurse’s office complaining of stomach aches because they had not had enough to eat over the weekend. “We give a recipe and all the ingredients for that recipe,” said Peterson, adding that the costs of the ingredients are included and that a recent meal cost $7.91 to make. “It’s part of our mission to empower families to show them they can create a healthy meal on a budget,” he said. The pack, which usually weighs 9 pounds or less, also includes staples such as cereal, canned goods, and fresh milk.

Originally, the program distributed food to schools in bulk, and volunteers assembled the packs in grocery bags for students. However, with the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, schools were closed, and when they reopened, volunteers were not allowed inside. “We started packing boxes in our warehouse,” said Peterson, who noted that school and church parking lots became pickup sites for parents. The situation changed the Power Packs distribution system permanently. Now, boxes are packed at the Power Packs Project location at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for distribution to schools and students each Wednesday and Thursday.

The program runs 35 weeks during the school year, and an eight-week summer distribution will begin Wednesday, June 21, and end Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Power Packs runs on volunteer power, clocking more than 700 volunteer hours provided by 475 individuals in the month of April. “We can always use more volunteers,” said Peterson, who noted some volunteers put in as many as 20 hours a week. The organization has a special need for volunteer drivers to deliver packs to schools and volunteers to distribute at schools. Peterson noted that for those tasks, it makes sense if the volunteers live in or near the districts receiving the delivery and doing the distribution. Current Lancaster County Power Packs distribution areas include a total of 66 schools located in the School District of Lancaster, Warwick, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Hempfield, Donegal, Cocalico, Columbia, and Lampeter-Strasburg. Most volunteer tasks require about a twohour time commitment. Distribution and delivery volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. “Packers at the warehouse typically do two-hour shifts but if someone only has an hour, that’s fine,” said Peterson, who added that groups of volunteers have come in during evenings and on weekends. Readers who are interested in volunteering for the organization may visit www.power packsproject.org/volunteer or call 717-517-9220.

Mauer noted that Lasagna Love is a great program to volunteer with, because volunteers can set their own schedules. “If you only want to do one lasagna a month, you can do that,” she remarked. “If you only want to make a lasagna one time, you can do it one time and be done. If you want to do four lasagnas a month, one every week, you can do that, too. You can also set up your own delivery radius and drive as far or as close as you want to deliver.” She noted that there are options to make meat or vegetarian lasagnas and that lasagnas can be delivered unbaked or baked.

Lasagna Love began in 2020 when Rhiannon Menn founded the organization in San Diego to spread kindness through home-cooked meals.

Mauer noted that a study of more than 30,000 people who have received lasagnas revealed the impact of the program. “Ninety-eight percent of the recipients said that they were inspired to pay it forward, and 21% had already done so within just a few days of receiving their lasagna,” she noted, adding that they didn’t necessarily make another lasagna, but did something for somebody else. “I really love the ripple

effect of this project. It just makes me feel good to participate in this project.” She also noted that quite often people who have been recipients of a lasagna become volunteers working for the organization.

Mauer, who says she enjoys cooking, noted that people do not have to be professional chefs to make a lasagna. “I follow different Lasagna Love groups on Facebook, and I’ll see there are new people signing up to do it who say they’ve never made a lasagna before in their life,” she stated. “You don’t have to have any real cooking skills. You just have to be able to throw a lasagna together, and you just need to have a desire to want to help people.”

appeared in front of the school board multiple times to convey the benefits of introducing such a program. Due to the fact that e-sports programs in schools are a new concept, Herzog said that many stigmas still surround them. He added, however, that the merits of creating the program have been tremendous. “There’s still a struggle in getting people to see e-sports as on the same level as other sports. There’s no doubt in my mind the players

are developing team skills and acquiring skills that will serve them well in life,” Herzog said.

In addition to the skills students acquire as members of an e-sports team, Herzog said the program also benefits the students by incorporating the players in school culture. Many students who don’t participate in other sports have been able to engage in school spirit as e-sports players.

Some students have even found opportunities for

Church sets basement sale

Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, will host its annual spring basement sale on Saturday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to noon. Items will include household goods, tools, office furniture, jewelry, seasonal décor, lamps, puzzles, books and a one-of-a-kind lap robe. Hot dogs and coffee will be available for on-site consumption, while pulled pork barbe-

cue will be offered for takeout.

During the event, the church-sponsored Boy Scout Troop 4 will sell chicken barbecue dinners at the rear of the church. Buyers will have the option of either whole chickens or half-chickens with their dinners.

Attendees should enter the sale area through the front stairs or via the accessible ramp at the back of the building.

scholarships and career paths through the program. Mintzer, who is a senior, plans to attend Harrisburg University in the fall to study e-sports team management. If he makes the Rocket League team at Harrisburg University, he will receive a full ride scholarship. “I do believe all high schools should invest in an e-sports program,” Mintzer said. “Getting students involved is really valuable to the whole community.”

Flashfood and Giant reduce food waste

In honor of Stop Food Waste Day, Flashfood and the Giant Company recently announced a major milestone in their sustainability and food waste reduction efforts.

Since May 2020, when it first partnered with Flashfood, a digital marketplace that connects consumers to heavily discounted food nearing its best-by date, the Giant Company has diverted 6 million pounds of food from landfills.

As a direct result, the Giant Company and Flashfood have together saved more than 10 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of taking 1,186 cars off the road for a year. The food saved also equates to more than two million meals that fed families instead of ending up in landfills.

The Flashfood program started as a four-store pilot in 2020 and has since been integrated across 190 locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Flashfood shoppers use the app to save on meats, dairy products, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables and other grocery items. Shoppers browse and purchase discounted food items directly through the Flashfood app on their mobile phone and then pick up their order from the Flashfood Zone located inside their participating Giant or Martin’s store.

A chance to learn from living history

The Southern Lancaster Couny Historical Society, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, will host the 2023 Living History Encampment on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 19, 20 and 21.

On Friday, the event will be open from noon to 4 p.m.; on Saturday, demonstrations will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and on Sunday, activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission for the encampment will be free, and parking will be available for a small fee per vehicle. Tours of the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum will also be offered for a small charge. The threeday event will feature tours of the camp, conversations with Civil War re-enactors, book signings from historical authors, antique collection displays and Civil War-era replica weapon demonstrations. Food will be available to purchase from Old Iron Grille.

This year, the event will introduce a program for homeschoolers on Friday as the encampment is set up. From 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., participants will have opportunities to learn about Civil War-era

medicine, converse with actors playing the roles of both Union and Confederate soldiers and see demonstrations from a blacksmith. Registration is not required, but the program is structured to provide an educational outing for homeschooled students. Students will rotate through six informational stations and conclude the day with an artillery demonstration.

On Saturday, attendees will be able to meet actors playing President Abraham Lincoln and the first family, who will answer questions about their lives and the Civil War. Actors playing prominent generals from the war will also be available to offer insight on

the details of the conflict. At 1 p.m., a battle re-enactment between Union and Confederate soldiers will be held.

Participants will have another opportunity to meet the president, first family and generals on Sunday. A battle re-enactment will take place at noon, followed by a Sunday service at 1:15 p.m.

The encampment will be divided into two parts: the living history encampment on the upper lawn behind the museum and the military encampment on the lower side of the property. The living history encampment will include presentations from historical fiction author Joel

Moore and Civil War historian Bruce Mowday. Moore will cover biographical information on historical figures, display photographs from the war and offer book signings. Mowday’s presentation will detail the events of the Battle of Gettysburg.

“We are our history. It’s important to learn from the past to understand the present and try to mold our future,” Moore said. “At the encampment, you get to live history and walk through a time-warp to another era, so to speak.”

Salvation Army seeks to foster spirit for giving back

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ mission is to do the most good. That includes financial aid for county students seeking to further their educations at college.

Recently, the Salvation Army Lancaster Corps awarded its annual Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf scholarships to 20 seniors from 13 Lancaster County high schools. The students formally accepted their scholarships at a special awards dinner on April 27 at Eden Resort and Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster.

Recipients and their high schools were Nicole Chen, Penn Manor; Mina Cooper, Dayspring Christian Academy; Savannah Henschel, Warwick; Natalie Klecker, Anchor Christian Academy; Ethan Lin, Hempfield; Kieran McFall, Penn Manor; Caitlyn McGough, Penn Manor; Mercyangelis Morillo, Columbia; Connor Nimmon, Hempfield;

Luke Pagilia, Hempfield; Abigail Phillips, Conestoga Valley; Maximillian Ponton, Penn Manor; Tobias Reiff, Lancaster Mennonite; Heavynn Rodriguez, J.P. McCaskey; Savannah Stauffer, Ephrata; Alana Stoltzfus, Lancaster Mennonite; Hagen Supeck, Lampeter-Strasburg; Lily Troutman, Elizabethtown; Avante Webb, J.P. McCaskey; and Hanna Weller, Cocalico. Each student received $2,000 in scholarship monies.

“Our mission is to help people in need,” said Shady Boules, the operations and development manager for the local Salvation Army. “With the scholarships, our focus is to help students and their families. Everyone is welcome to apply. If students need help to go to college, we’re there for them.”

To apply for the Salvation Army scholarships, students must be residents of Lancaster County, and they must be high school seniors with GPAs of 2.0 or higher who are going on to college and can demon-

strate a financial need. After the students submit a 500word essay and are interviewed by a selection committee, the winners are chosen.

“We believe a lot of students don’t have the confidence to go to college because of the financial responsibilities associated with it,” said Boules. “Going to college isn’t cheap. We want to be part of the encouragement, the support. We believe in the next generation. We believe in education. And when we help these students, we hope that they will be motivated to give back to the community.”

Boules said that the scholarship’s number of applicants and number of recipients varies from year to year. But over the 24 years that the scholarship has been in existence, the Salvation Army has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to county students in need.

“We see the need as being bigger every year,” said Boules. “People used to be able to afford college. We’re trying to secure donors because we want to see it continue. When you see the impact it has on students, you know it’s worth it. You’re changing lives.”

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps also helps with things like rent assistance, utility assistance, and social services and works closely with other community organizations to promote the greater good.

“The Salvation Army is here for everyone, regardless of language, ethnicity or background,” said Boules. “We want people to support the Salvation Army and to be part of the movement.”

Comet track teams sweep Lebanon on senior day

On a day when Penn Manor’s seniors were recognized, the Comet track and field teams defeated Lebanon on Monday, May 8, in their final dual meet of the season. The boys won all but five events en route to a crushing 108-42 final while the girls posted a lopsided 95-49 result.

Trevor Schneider remained undefeated on the season with a winning height of 6-2, with Stoner and Gansner taking second and third. Also in the field, Jael Cruz (148-2) and Wyatt Kauffman (138-2) both threw personal bests in the discus to finish first and second, respectively. Josh Doyle led a sweep in the javelin with Osman and Connor Dumas following and Jason Andro claimed the long jump. The boys also swept the pole vault with Drew Lebo (12-0) winning and Liam Risser, Sebastian Weaver and Jonathan Witmer tying for second.

On the track, Jon Osman picked up wins in the 100 and 200 and Adrian Smith (2nd) set a new sophomore class record in the 200 with a 10.9. Smith, Osman, Drew Lebo and Justin Smith also claimed the 4x100 relay.

D. Lebo also claimed the high hurdles while brother Tommy won the 300s. Carter Vinson, who won the mile, rounded out a sweep in the 3200 following Gavin Roberts (first) and Tristan Weaver.

Annie Bibus was the top point-getter for the girls, winning the mile and 800 and leading a sweep in the 3200 with Madison Martin and Jaidyn Carbaugh following. The Comets also swept the 100 hurdles with Jireh Ellis, Maleah Zook, the 300 hurdles winner, and Kaitlyn Yeager rounding out the place-winners.

Manor opened the meet with Olivia Parshley, Trisha Khadka, Carbaugh and Martin claiming the 4x800 relay.

In the field, Kate Harnish (pole vault), who was also sec-

ond in the long jump, and Brianna Lee (high jump) were the only winners.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

The boys’ lacrosse team wrapped up a 6-4 league record with a crushing 18-2 win over Elizabethtown on May 4 and finished 11-6 overall with an 11-5 non-league victory at Governor Mifflin. The Comets are currently 9th in the District 3A power rankings with the top 12 teams advancing.

The one-win Bears of Etown were no match for the Comets who sprinted to a 5-0 first quarter advantage before exploding with 10 second quarter scores and a 15-1 halftime lead.

Eleven different Comets contributed to the offensive output with Benedict Flinchbaugh and Peyton Englert each scoring four times and dishing two assists. Evan Pohle, with two goals, was the only other multi-goal scorer with Adam Hollinger (2a), Eli Warfel (3a), Mikey Hollister, Willard Smith, Collin Robinson, Bowermaster, and Michael Mallis scoring one each. Jack Warfel added one assist.

Nick Hollinger (6 saves) and Hull (2) split time in goal.

On the road last Monday, the Comets got off to a slow start, scoring just once in the first quarter, but led 5-1 at the half and 9-3 heading into the final quarter.

Three was the magic num-

ber in this game with Hollinger (2a), Aidan Gerlach (2a) and Englert (1a) each scoring hat tricks. Flinchbaugh (1g, 2a), Adam Hoin (1g) and Warfel (1a) also contributed.

Hollinger collected 15 saves.

VOLLEYBALL

With districts rapidly approaching, the Comets earned an important 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-16) win over CV Thursday, May 4, avenging their 3-0 loss to the Buckskins back on April 11. They did not, however, have enough to knock off undefeated Section One champ Warwick last Tuesday, May 9.

Manor hosted the Comets for senior night and the added excitement in the gym only helped fuel their momentum. “This was the type of match we knew we were capable of but hadn’t seen fully,” said head coach Chris Telesco. “In the past we have been inconsistent with these thingsblocks, defense, passing, serving-but we were steady.

“And since it was senior night, it was great to see our seniors show off their growth over the years,” he continued.

“Luke Thomas and Roman Keefer are getting better and better as blockers and attackers and Elijah Julian’s confidence has skyrocketed. He found his niche and is reinventing it constantly. That’s due to hard work and willingness to learn. And then there’s

Wyatt Rohrer. His growth has been exponential,” Telesco said. “I would argue that he is one of the best all-around setters in the state. I’m so proud of all of these guys.”

The first set was the closest with neither team leading by more than one point until the Comets took control at 19-17 and didn’t back down. By the time the third set rolled around, the Bucks were frustrated, and the Comets were firing on all cylinders. Harry Whited finished with 10 kills. Rohrer controlled the offense, dishing 23 assists. Julian hustled for 11 digs and Thomas and Noah Reen each put up one block. Garrett Cortez and Whited chipped in with one ace each.

The Comets may have lost the match against Warwick, but they did close the gap in the third set before falling short 29-27. Thomas (10 kills), Rhorer (16 assists), Keefer (1 block), Cortez (13 digs) and Andre Weaver (1 ace) rounded out the stat leaders.

SOFTBALL

When things fall together for the Comets, they’re a good team. After suffering a pair of one-run losses, Penn Manor topped Warwick 3-1 on May 5

and then dominated Section One champ Hempfield, 11-1 in the regular season ender.

“When we play good defense and hit the ball, good things happen,” said head coach Dave Stokes. “We played error-free ball against Warwick and Juliegh Bowmaster threw just 48 pitches in seven innings. Unbelievable. She has just nine walks on the season.”

Holding a one run lead through five innings, Warwick tied the game in the sixth only to see Manor forge ahead with a two run seventh. Kira Green’s RBI single gave Manor the lead while Soboleski’s base hit added an insurance run. Warwick went three up, three down in the bottom half.

Three days later, the Comets use a five run third inning to push out to a 6-0 advantage over Hempfield. They scored five more over the fifth and sixth innings.

“Kyleigh Lamborne hit a grand slam in that third inning and Bria Booth added a three-run homer in the sixth to seal the deal,” said Stokes. “We’re 14-6 now so we’re hoping to make a run in districts.”

Bowmaster struck out three and gave up three hits in the win.

GIRLS’

LACROSSE

The girl’s lacrosse team posted mixed results in their last two regular season games. They held off Elizabethtown 10-7 on May 4 but followed with a 9-3 loss to Section One runner-up Hempfield on May 8.

The Comets racked up nine first half goals against the Bears and both teams combined for just three goals in the second half. Jarliah Ferko matched E-town’s Callie LoveMorris with a hat trick while Catherine Rabatin (1a) and Mia Jones each scored twice. Grace Gerner (1a), Erin Shipley and C Eckroat added one goal each.

Despite the loss to Hempfield, the Comets show improvement having dropped their first-round outing against the Knights 14-4.

Hempfield used a 6-1 first half advantage to set the tone and held the Comets to just five shots on goal.

Joelle Kroesen (2g) and Jones found the back of the net. Brooklynn Ayala collected 19 saves over the two games.

BASEBALL

The baseball team picked up a 3-1 win over Warwick on May 5 before ending the regular season with a disappointing 3-2 loss to Hempfield on Monday, May 8.

“We finished 12-8 overall and 8-7 in Section One,” said head coach Tom Fish. “It looks like we finish 10th in districts which open May 19.”

The Comets scored all the runs they needed in the first inning and all with two outs. A RBI double by Isaac Braegelmann scored Bryce Avery.

Spencer Stuart followed with a two-run single that plated Grant Fry and Braegelmann.

“Our pitching and defense made it hold,” said Fish.

“Bryce went seven innings with seven strikeouts and allowed only four hits. He was backed by our incredible senior outfield. Trevor Adams, Spencer Stuart and Peter Skiadas have been the best outfield I have coached in my 13 years at this level. And it’s not close!”

Against Hempfield, the visitors scored single runs in the first and second innings and Manor did the same in the third and fourth. The Knights, however, broke the tie with a single, a walk and a double in the fifth. Avery (2RBI), Stuart and Skiadas all finished with two hits.

Artists invited to enter contest

Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed Stewards in York, in partnership with the City of York, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and the Watershed Alliance of York, are launching the 2023 Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Contest, a project to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and the negative impacts it can have on waterways. Each painted storm drain will contain an environmental message connecting stormwater runoff, storm drains, and water pollution.

Art submissions are currently being accepted from artists age 14 and up who currently reside in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The deadline for entries is Monday, May 22. Guidelines for submitting art can be found at www.street2creek.org.

A panel of local judges will judge the artworks, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three artists. The winning artists will complete their art at three select storm drains in downtown York. The new paintings will become part of the 18 storm drain murals that can be found between the

Codorus Creek and the Royal Square District.

This project was funded by York Water Company, S.H.A.R.E., the Street 2 Creek

Hambright Elementary School students have recently been learning about environmental topics, and the school received an award for some of its efforts.

The school has added a community garden to its campus, representing a joint effort of the staff, students and PTO members; The Edible Classroom; local businesses; and students and teachers at Penn Manor High School (PMHS).

The project began last year when Hambright PTO member Lauren Weaver met with Grace Julian, co-founder of The Edible Classroom, a nonprofit that provides gardening classes to students at area schools, including Conestoga, Central Manor and Eshleman elementaries. A Hambright Garden Team was formed, and staff members and parents began soliciting donations and holding fundraisers, including a recent Bingo Night at Hambright.

Local businesses donated various materials for the garden, and a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture paid for additional items. PMHS students in Mary Wurzbach’s Introduction to Agricultural Mechanics classes built the garden beds. On March 16, all Hambright

students helped to fill the garden beds with soil.

Every classroom at Hambright was slated to participate in two lessons led by Edible Classroom instructors this spring. Students and staff members planned to plant tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, and carrots, along with some unusual crops, including dinosaur kale, dragon tongue beans, and jelly melon. Students have been documenting the progress of the garden on a school website, and many of the crops will be harvested before the end of the school year. At a school family event on April 14, students painted signs to identify the crops.

Hambright has been named a 2023 Watershed School of Excellence by the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Educators for its efforts to teach students about the impact of watersheds on the environment. Hambright was praised for “providing studentcentered learning experiences that engage students through hands-on investigation of local environmental issues,” and teachers were hailed as “passionate, determined, and innovative educators.”

Mitzvah Day delivers for local nonprofits

On April 16 at 9 a.m., more than 60 families gathered at the Shaarai Shomayim Temple in downtown Lancaster for Mitzvah Day, an annual celebration of volunteerism that serves local nonprofit organizations by doing projects such as painting, packing and cooking food, cleaning parks, and more. A short service was held before the nearly 150 volunteers set out to fulfill the Jewish commandment of doing mitzvahs - good deeds - in the form of community services.

Bob Houghton, Sh’arim administrator with congregation Shaarai Shomayim, said that the tradition began in the mid-1990s when Rabbi Jack

Paskoff suggested the event.

“For the most part, many of those organizations have longstanding relationships with us not just on Mitzvah Day,” said Houghton, who noted that during a five-day summer camp for children, older participants take part in community service work on three days.

Many of the projects the group undertook called for outside work. Although Houghton expressed concern about the weather prior to Mitzvah Day, he noted that April 16 was beautiful and that outside activities for Clare House, Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake’s Stream Project, and Interfaith Power and Light were completed successfully. Up to 20 volunteers

cleaned up Rader Park on Marietta Avenue. A second similar project involved cleaning winter trash from rain gardens on West James Street. Rain gardens collect rainwater and begin to filter out pollutants while providing a home for wildlife. “(Issues with) clean water and the environment can be overwhelming,” noted Houghton. “But if you can do this little bit, it makes a difference.”

Another emphasis is on making and packing food. Family-style meals are created for some organizations, while others, such as the local domestic violence shelter, receive individually packed meals. Houghton mentioned that the shelter is near to the hearts of participants. “If you ask, ‘Which one do we feel for the most?’ it’s them,” shared

Houghton, who said the shelter especially struggled during the pandemic when many nonprofits were forgotten.

Families with young children were assigned a project supporting the St. Anne Church brown bag lunch giveaway.

“We get all the supplies and package up 100 lunches,” said Houghton, who explained that since the sandwiches included must be made at St. Anne Church, items for those are donated. “In a brown paper bag, we put everything but the sandwiches,” said Houghton, who noted that the children decorate the paper lunch bags. “It’s the shortest project,” he added.

Creativity is also part of a project involving Ronald McDonald House in Hershey. During Mitzvah Day, volunteers baked brownies and

Hambright

made “thinking of you” cards to deliver to staff members and current residents at the house in Hershey, which provides a home away from home for families of children being treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital.

During 2020, Mitzvah Day was not held due to COVID-19 restrictions, but in 2021, a virtual event was held. “People picked up supplies and did the (assigned) project,” said Houghton.

More information about the congregation may be found at www.shaarai.org.

Katherine Harnish accepted the award on behalf of Hambright at a ceremony in March. Both teachers, along with Kelley Groff and Ay’Shia Gaston, completed watershed education training in 2021 through a partnership with Millersville University, Virginia Wesleyan University, and Norfolk Collegiate School.

At Hambright, teachers incorporate lessons about watersheds - land areas that channel rainfall and snowmelt to creeks, streams, rivers, and, eventually, the ocean - in their classes. Students learn how to identify a watershed and how water moves within

these areas. They also study the Hambright campus and use a computer simulation to determine how surface changes would improve the watershed.

Additional activities have included conducting studies of water quality and aquatic macroinvertebrates in a local creek, painting storm drains to let people know that only rainwater should go down the drains, conducting a litter cleanup, and creating a public awareness campaign about littering, raising trout from eggs and releasing them to local waterways, and learning how to reduce water waste.
