Conestoga UMC Will Renew an Old Custom

Conestoga United Methodist Church (UMC) is bringing back a tradition that has been gone for approximately 80 years.

The church, located at 71 Sand Hill Road, Conestoga, will hold a Historical Memorial Day Service on Sunday, May 24, at 2 p.m.

“There has not been a Memorial Day service in Conestoga, as far as I know, since the 1940s,” event organizer Ron Walton said. “A long time ago, people would meet down at the other end of Conestoga, walk through Conestoga, stop at the different cemeteries, and then they would usually end up out here as the last church and have a service here,” said Walton. “Sometimes there were hundreds of people coming for the service. The committee here at the church decided to celebrate the 170th anniversary of the church, along with the America’s 250th, and put

Pedaling Toward Confidence and Growth

At LifeCycles, a simple bike ride is the start of something bigger. With every mile, young riders build confidence, courage and resilience, skills that carry far beyond the road ahead. The nonprofit, which offers free long-distance cycling experiences for boys and girls ages 12 to 18, just kicked off its 12th season of transforming lives, one ride at a time.

Teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Both groups gather at 5:45 p.m. and finish up at 8 p.m. The season runs through mid-October.

“There are separate girls’ teams and boys’ teams, and each team has multiple ride groups based on skill level and strength, so there’s a place for teens of any level of development, including beginners,” said Lee DeRemer, LifeCycles director.

Each evening, participants experience a ride, mentoring, a hot meal and lots of encouraging coaching while making new friends.

Runners are self-motivated athletes. When they run and enter into their competitive zones, runners report feelings of exhilaration and jubilation. They are feelings that can only be expanded by running for others, feelings that will be felt during the Clinic for Special Children’s upcoming 5K.

“It’s people intent on running,” said Renny Magill, the director of development for the Clinic for Special Children. “But there’s also almost a sense of a family reunion. Some are people running in support of a family member. They’re people who are interested in

“We provide free 24-speed bicycles, helmets, uniform shirts, safety lights, everything,” Lee said. “Each evening, approximately 25 girls and 10 women ride together, and 45 boys and 20 men ride together in ride groups of six to nine riders. We use a separate curriculum for girls and boys - the curriculum is focused on character development, life skills and spiritual growth.”

supporting the mission.”

“Obviously, we have some serious runners,” said Kelly Cullen, the marketing and communications manager for the Clinic for Special Children. “But when I think of the atmosphere of the event, I think of family. We’re a very family-friendly event. It may be families we serve. We’re welcoming a variety of physical abilities, and people really rally around our families.”

The Clinic for Special Children’s 8th annual 5K run is a community event, a fundraiser, and an outreach activity for the local nonprofit. This year’s 5K run will be staged at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the Leola Produce Auction, 135 Brethren Church Road, Leola.

Runners can register for the 5K at www.clinicforspecialchildren. org prior to the race or in person beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event. All proceeds from the 5K will benefit the Clinic for Special Children, which serves kids and adults with rare genetic disorders.

“It’s open to anyone who has interest in running and supporting the mission,” said Cullen. “It brings people together, and it’s nice to see a community there. It helps us reach everyone about our mission and the work we do.”

“There’s more to this event than raising funds,” said Magill. “It’s also important to how we communicate our brand.”

In addition to the chip-timed 5K race, the event will feature a 1.5-mile family walk that will also begin at 9 a.m., as well as a kids’ color fun run, which will get underway at 10:15 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top overall female finisher and top overall male finisher in the 5K race, as well as the top finishers in 12 age divisions, between 14 and under and 70 and older.

The event, which will provide healthy snacks for participants, will afford runners opportunities to create or join fundraising teams.

The 5K’s vibe will be enhanced by the presence of food trucks offering breakfast items and

coffee for purchase.

“We’re doing things to make it fun,” said Magill, a resident of Akron. “We want a lot of people to have a great time.”

“It’s a happy celebration and a happy moment for the people we serve,” said Cullen, a resident of Manor Township. “We’ll have people walking and pushing strollers. It’s really a welcoming, positive event.”

The relatively flat 5K course will traverse scenic Lancaster County farmland. From the Leola Produce Auction, the course will take a right on Peace Road, a left on North Hershey Avenue, then a left on Balmertown Road, before taking a right on Brethren Church Road, a left on Center Square Road, a left on North Maple Avenue, and then a left on Peace Road before returning to the produce auction.

As many as 500 participants are expected to attend the event, and organizers of the event are seeking to make as much as $80,000 for the Clinic for Special Children. More than 30 local busi -

nesses and community members are sponsoring the 5K.

The Clinic for Special Children, which is located at 20 Community Lane, Gordonville, operates under a $7 million annual budget, 70% of which is funded by benefit auctions, contributions, grants and fundraisers.

“Giving represents 70% of our revenue and allows us to provide services that are affordable and fundable,” said Magill. “Part of the reason we do so well is that we have very generous patrons.”

The Clinic for Special Children, which was founded in 1989, serviced 5,700 patient interactions in 2025 from individuals challenged by rare genetic disorders.

“Each year, 400 new patients walk through our door,” said Cullen. “Not only are we caring for children and adults, but we’re also furthering the science. Our work is based in Lancaster County, but it impacts outside of Lancaster County and the plain community. Ninety percent of our patients are from the plain community, and many are uninsured.”

LifeCycles

While riders of any skill level are encouraged to join LifeCycles, the more advanced riders are invited to participate in one of four summer challenge rides. Destinations will be Cape Cod and the Great Allegheny Passage, and two groups will travel from the Adirondack Mountains to northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire.

Based in Lancaster, LifeCycles is supported by Community Fellowship Church of Lancaster and by more than 100 people who believe in the organization’s mission. LifeCycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus.

zone and believe in their ability to “do hard things,” the organization’s motto.

LifeCycles is open to youths throughout Lancaster County. Kids can join the program at any time during the season, Lee said, noting that many people join throughout the spring and summer as other commitments at school end and their calendars open up.

“LifeCycles is a great way to meet friends, grow and do something you probably already enjoy,” he remarked. “Come to improve your skills, see new parts of Lancaster County and beyond in a safe and positive environment.”

Beyond supporting biking skills, LifeCycles provides encouragement for kids to step out of their comfort

“You can expect to be seen, valued and encouraged as you grow physically and spiritually,” Lee commented. “Many parents tell us that LifeCycles is the first thing that has captured their son’s or daughter’s attention, that they actually look forward to the next gathering.”

He encourages anyone who is interested in learning more to come out and try LifeCycles.

“We meet teens where they are and help them challenge themselves at their own pace of growth, physically, spiritually and mentally,” he said. “We focus intensely on safety and proper cycling skills to equip the teens for a life of enjoyable riding. … Come and try it. It’s free, and there are no tryouts. What have you got to lose?”

untold stories, and some of it will be told now.”

The service will start with an introduction by Walton, followed by a processional, a presentation of flags, and a performance of “America the Beautiful” by piper Marty Sullivan. Sullivan will also play a key role after the service.

“What’s really going to be touching is (Sullivan is) going to go out to the cemetery, and he’s going to play ‘Amazing Grace.’ And then the gentleman (trumpeter Fred Moury) is going to be playing ‘Taps,’ and then we’re going to be laying carnations on the graves.”

Walton added, “We have a lot of special music. It’s going to be very unique.”

Soloist Matthew Palmeri, an award-winning senior at Penn Manor High School, will sing “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

Throughout the service, Walton will speak about the nation’s wars and many of the Conestoga residents involved. “A lot of the information that I have in here comes from Memorial Day services from the late 1800s to the 1920s in Conestoga,” said Walton. “I pulled the resources from different services. I have a good background in history of the local area, so I put a lot of little quips in.”

He will focus on the Civil War and World War II. Brothers Dr. B.F.W. Urban and John Urban, Conestoga natives, were Civil War veterans and authors. B.F.W. wrote “Dreaming on the Conestoga,” a book primarily about the Conestoga River that also included a passage about the Battle of Gettysburg, where he wrote in a letter home, “Dear father and mother. We have fought a great battle and won a great victory. John and I are both safe.”

Walton noted, “It was a short letter, but his father often said it was the best one he ever received.”

John’s memoir is titled “Battlefield in Prison Pen.”

The brothers’ father, Joseph Urban, was one of the founders of Conestoga UMC.

Stories from World War II will be told in memory of former church members Walter Kneisley Jr. and John Walton Jr., Ron Walton’s father.

In addition to the service, there will also be a display of memorabilia in the church social hall. Walton is requesting that people submit photos of their loved ones who are buried in the church cemetery.

For more information about the Memorial Day service, call Walton at 717-823-2984 or go to the church’s Facebook page.

Blue Rock Fire Rescue is facing the same issues as municipalities across the state and country. To stay afloat, stations are closing and merging with other fire companies. We’re in the midst of a $10 million capital campaign to build a new station so we can sustain the VOLUNTEER fire service. The budget for our VOLUNTEERS is $1 million annually. Local career (PAID) agency budgets are $8-14 million annually.

It is more efficient and will allow us to put more money into sustaining our VOLUNTEERS. The new station will replace old buildings in Highville and Washington Boro. Over the past 15 years, a lot of tax dollars have been spent upgrading and maintaining the Highville station, a building we do not own. Continuing to maintain these two old, aging buildings is untenable for your tax dollars. In 2025, the western portion of our district only had 10% of our 890 calls.
