Almost Like Being There PA Family Travel Fair Goes Virtual By Ann Mead Ash

When Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the third PA Family Travel Fair, realized that the 2020 fair, which was scheduled for April 18, would have to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. The virtual fair can be accessed at www.whereand when.com/virtual-pa-family-travel-fair or by

Sarah Adams, of Lititz, was 16 weeks pregnant with her son, Davin, when she and her husband, Clark, received heartbreaking news in May 2018. “We found out … that he had a rare terminal condition,” recalled Sarah, who noted that her son’s problems were caused by a genetic condition called Noonan’s syndrome. Neither she nor her husband carries the gene for the condition. For nearly two months, life has looked a little bit different for Lancaster County residents, and that includes individuals served by Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Friendship Community is a faith-based, licensed provider of disability services and has been cultivating the capabilities of intellectually disabled and autistic individuals since 1972. The organization currently serves more than 200 people in various programs, including 27 residential homes, three daytime programs, and those living with their loved ones or independently in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. recent years by creating a mentor training program, adding college credit and establishing a high school pre-apprenticeship program to prepare the future skilled workforce. The association currently has more than 80 apprentices from more than 30 companies in its multi-year apprentice training program, which aims to help regional manufacturers create a steady pipeline of skilled workers to meet their needs moving into the future. The southcentral Pennsylvania manufacturing sector was recently awarded a second round of funding to further support the Next Generation Manufacturing Industry Partnership. The commonwealth’s PAsmart Next Gen grants provide funds to support the development, launch, implementation, and technical assistance of Next Gen Industry Partnerships (IP), which address the workforce, economic development, and educational needs of regional industries through an employer-led and demand-driven approach. Over the past year, the Southcentral Pennsylvania Manufacturing Next Gen Industry Partnership of regional manufacturing leaders created action teams that focused on the most urgent needs identified by the industry.

Those include promoting manufacturing careers to grow the future workforce, improving training opportunities for middle-skill and technical occupations, and facilitating businessto-business connections to exchange best practices. The partnership is facilitated by The Manufacturers’ Association which works with regional organizations to support the employers’ initiatives, which include SCPa Works, the regional workforce development board; the Southcentral Pennsylvania Partnership for Regional Economic Performance; and the educational partners in southcentral Pennsylvania. The private sector-driven initiative is led by two employer co-champions, Weldon Solutions, a manufacturer of grinding machines and robotic integration, and Phoenix Contact, a global leader in electronic connectors. The Manufacturers’ Association is a multi-county trade association serving as an advocate and partner for manufacturing and logistics in southcentral Pennsylvania and northcentral Maryland. Organizations Receive Funding The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recently awarded a $250,000 grant to the Manufacturers’ Association of Emigsville to establish a unique apprenticeship ecosystem that will support manufacturers in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties. The purpose of this forwardleaning project is to establish a registered apprenticeship ecosystem in southcentral Pennsylvania by expanding employer program participation, increasing the number of journey workers, and adding apprentices and preapprentices. The association has also been able to increase the number of trades included, such as toolmakers, machinists, maintenance mechanics, mechatronics technicians, quality technicians, and industrial manufacturing technicians, and it recently submitted paperwork to the state to add a registered automation robotics technician. Secondary objectives of the new program include increasing participation of nontraditional populations, which are typically underserved by trades training, and more efficiently aligning available resources to better support economic growth throughout the region. Team members have needed to utilize new techniques in order to maintain their established trusting relationships with individuals in order to safely wear the masks for any extended period of time.” Following established routines is important for many of Friendship’s clients, so staff members sought out ways to alleviate the stress caused by the shutdown’s disruption of regular activities. Two parents had a source for iPads, and Friendship was able to obtain enough of the electronic tablets so that every home and support location could have one. The iPads have enabled Friendship clients to regularly connect with family members and friends and to engage in meaningful activities. “The acquisition of these iPads has also enabled the spiritual nurture and community life coordinator to connect individually, provide group prayer meetings, and orchestrate uplifting daily videos and songs,” Schuit said. As a result of the shutdown, the day programs - including the Friendship Heart Gallery studio and Meaningful Day Academy were immediately closed. Instead of Friendship’s clients spending time together in one place, each individual had to stay in his or her respective home. This resulted in staff members having to provide around-the-clock care at each home, when they had not previously done that, and that prompted schedule changes, flexibility, and creativity. Friendship Community also formed an urgent response team to prepare for the possibility of illness. Team members made sure to maintain direct contact with clients, clients’ families, and government authorities at all levels, and they also implemented protocols to keep everyone safe. Friendship CEO Gwen Schuit, BSN, M.Ed., NHA, credited two sewing circles - Sewing Hope, a group associated with Worship Center, and Bird-in-Hand Fabric - with providing cloth masks for Friendship’s staff members and clients. Schuit noted that while the masks are protective, they pose significant challenges. “(Some clients) have struggled

Northwest Bancshares Inc., the holding company for Northwest Bank, announced on April 24 that it has successfully completed its merger with MutualFirst Financial Inc., the holding company for MutualBank. Under the terms of the merger agreement, each share of common stock of MutualFirst Financial Inc. will be converted into the right to receive 2.4 shares of Northwest Bancshares Inc. common stock. Cash will be paid in lieu of fractional shares at a rate of $10.71 per whole share of Northwest Bancshares Inc. common stock. Northwest issued 20,659,087 shares of common stock in the merger (subject to adjustment for cash issued in lieu of fractional shares), and based upon the $10.33 per share closing price of Northwest’s common stock on April 24, the transaction value was approximately $213.4 million. The completion of the merger has resulted in a

bank with approximately $12.8 billion in total assets, providing banking services through 214 branch locations and 273 ATMs in four states. Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. Lining up to take over the Where & When social media are a mix of visitors’ bureaus, historic attractions, amusement parks, museums, and all-inclusive resorts. Among them are the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash, and Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. Fort Roberdeau in Altoona will also have a day manning the social media accounts. Virtual tours of areas will be available on some days as well. “We have 18 different destination marketing organizations involved,” noted Royal. “Some of those will include virtual tour links for their areas.” Among the destination marketing areas that will be part of the virtual fair are the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau and The Happy

Valley Adventure Bureau. One of the exciting aspects of the travel fair is that the exhibitors bring information about interesting and beautiful parts of Pennsylvania to those who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get away to open spaces,” noted Royal. “Worlds End State Park (in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County, there are beautiful vistas.” Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid-1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages,” Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).”

‘Let’s see if we can get further.’” Sarah said the situation taught her how to live in the moment. “I coped by enjoying the time we had, so we had a gender reveal party and a baby shower,” said Sarah, who noted that she has a number of photos from throughout her pregnancy. On Aug. 1, 2018, Sarah noticed she did not feel Davin moving as often as usual. “We went to the doctor, and they did an ultrasound,” said Sarah. “There was no heartbeat.” The condition had caused Davin to have hydrops - a fluid buildup in areas of the body - that was too hard on the baby’s heart. Sarah’s body was swelling as well from the excess fluid. A vertical C-section was scheduled for Aug. 2. When Sarah was being prepped for the surgery, she asked one of the attending medical professionals how long she would be allowed to hold her son. “She said, ‘As long as you are here,’” recalled Sarah, who knew she would be in bed in the hospital for four days. Following the surgery, her son was wrapped in blankets and brought to her. “It was great to meet him, even though he wasn’t there in spirit, because there was the connection (from carrying him),” said Sarah. “It was such a great experience to have him all day.” Sarah learned that she was able keep her son with her because Women & Babies Hospital has a piece of equipment made in the United Kingdom called a CuddleCot. “I had never heard of it,” said Sarah, who noted that the CuddleCot, which

had been donated to Women and Babies by another family that lost a baby, is a cooling device that extends the time parents can spend with a child who has been stillborn or died shortly after birth. “We kept him (with us) for three days,” said Sarah. The availability of the CuddleCot was the beginning of a journey that led Sarah and Clark to found Our Baby’s Legacy, with a mission to “provide families of pregnancy and infant loss with tools for comfort, community for support, and an opportunity to create a legacy for their child.” The CuddleCot was not the only comforting experience to inspire Sarah, whose sister had added weighted beads to a stuffed bunny for Sarah. “There are companies that make weighted teddy bears for people who are grieving, (whether) it’s the loss of a child or another kind of grief,” said Sarah. “There are a lot of studies about how physically holding something weighted helps.” The stuffed bunny now holds Davin’s ashes and a recording of his heartbeat. “It has created this little representation (of Davin),” said Sarah. “I still hold it and travel with it. I include it in photos. It has become a memorial to him.” Around the first anniversary of her son’s birth, Sarah wanted to do something special to commemorate him. “I thought I would work to donate a CuddleCot,” she said, noting that raising the funds for the device led her to a revelation. “I wanted to start a nonprofit that included all these tools for comfort.” By including other grieving families, Sarah has made it possible for them to honor their lost children. “When you lose your baby, no matter what stage, it grieves you to move forward in your life with them not being a part of it,” she said. “Creating a legacy for (that child) is a way to include them.” At the organization’s website, www.ourbabyslegacy.com, parents can learn about how to be part of a family group purchasing a CuddleCot for a hospital, find tools of comfort such as the weighted animals, and become part of a supportive community. “(This effort is) how I include my son,” explained Sarah. “I feel he is still very much part of my life because of building that legacy.”

When the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, on whose board Bo serves, heard about Nemours’ need for masks, it notified the Plain community. Within days, volunteers had produced hundreds of masks, which were collected and delivered to the hospital.
