Southeast Region of PFBC Promotes Waterway Well-being

The southeast portion of Pennsylvania is the most densely populated part of a predominantly rural state. But that doesn’t mean all those residents have to travel far to enjoy Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreational activities.

One of the main initiatives of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is to provide and promote natural fun in and around water.

“I think we really need to make people aware of all the opportunities around them,” said Andy Desko, who’s been the outreach and education coordinator for the Southeast Region of the PFBC for 18 years. “We want to help introduce folks to them right in their backyards. There are many accesses (to water) out there.

People may not be aware that there are boat accesses near them. I want to inspire people to check out the opportunities.”

The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is headquartered just north of the town of Lititz, at 255 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz, at Speedwell Forge Lake. The Southeast Region office, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, primarily serves as the rules and regulation enforcement headquarters for PFBC, but it does offer some services and amenities.

As outreach and education coordinator, Desko does work out of the Lititz office periodically, but he spends the majority of his work time in the field and around water.

“I really do enjoy interacting with people from all walks of life,” said Desko. “I grew up in a very rural county. I just enjoy the variety of

Trucks Will Roll to Grant Wishes

When hundreds of trucks hit the road on Saturday, May 9, they’ll be working to grant wishes. The 37th annual Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will kick off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Truck parking, driver check-in and on-site registration will take place from 6 to 10 a.m.

A silent auction and basket giveaways will be featured from 8 a.m. to noon. A Family Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a mandatory safety meeting for convoy drivers, before

remarks and a Wish Angel Remembrance at noon. The convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m., and the event

will conclude at 3 p.m.

There is a new route for the convoy this year, said Lori Dietrich,

Great things happen when kids get outside. They can discover new skills, develop self-confidence, make new friends and, most of all, have fun.

Kids ages 10 to 15 are invited to the 31st annual Youth Field Day, organized by the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth. It will take place at the Milton Grove Sportsmen’s Club, 731 Milton Grove Road North,

University Adds Wellness Vending Machine

Millersville University has installed a new wellness vending machine designed to provide students with convenient and affordable access to health and wellness products. The vending machine is located in the lower level of the Student Memorial Center in the lounge near the campus Chick-fil-A.

serves as an educational tool. Each item is connected to a QR code that directs students to comprehensive support services ranging from on-campus departments to community-based organizations and programs such as the YWCA and Domestic Violence Services.

The initiative grew out of a project developed through the President’s Leadership Institute, a 10-month professional development program led by university president Daniel Wubah. The initiative is led by Lauren Blevins, director of health services, and Susan Moyer, interim chair and associate professor in the Wehrheim School of Nursing. The pair identified a need to improve access to everyday health and wellness items while promoting a stronger culture of well-being on campus. The vending machine offers over-the-counter medications, personal care items, and free products, including naloxone and tampons. In addition to providing products, the machine

The vending machine project is co-sponsored by Millersville University’s Health Services, Wehrheim School of Nursing, and Center for Health Education and Promotion, along with the Pennsylvania State Employee Credit Union. Project funding was provided through a grant from the Jewish Healthcare Foundation as part of its College and University Health Vending grant program. Additional co-sponsors and donors helped to bring the vending machine project to fruition.

Student input played a critical role in shaping the initiative. During the Wellness Fair last April, students shared feedback on the types of products they wanted and discussed challenges related to affordability and stigma when purchasing health items in traditional retail settings.

The wellness vending machine reflects Millersville’s ongoing commitment to supporting student health by increasing access to resources, encouraging self-care, and fostering a more inclusive and supportive campus environment.

The Ice Cream Bar at Decades opened its second season with a celebration on April 17. The Ice Cream Bar features a variety of ice cream flavors, alcoholic and nonalcoholic milkshakes, frozen treats, savory snacks, Decades cocktail pouches, beer on tap, new iced coffee, Decades margaritas, Shifty canned cocktails, and more. Decades will feature a variety of housemade ice cream flavors this season, including the Coindexter Crunch, which was inspired by Cap’n Crunch cereal, and a new Chillin’ With My Peeps flavor swirled with Cadbury egg pieces and Peeps candy.

The Ice Cream Bar will be open on Fridays from 4 to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 9 p.m. Later in May, the Ice Cream Bar will switch from Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hours to Wednesday through Sunday hours. The full inside Decades experience - retro arcade games, bowling, full restaurant, and bar - will continue to be open on Wednesdays through Sundays. Outdoor dining options will be available. director of development for Make-A-Wish in Lancaster. The route will run west from Manheim on Route 283 to Tollhouse Road before looping back on Route 283 East and ending at the Esbenshade Road exit. The convoy will no longer travel through Mount Joy. A map of the route may be found at https://tinyurl .com/3rczvcks.

Good spots to view the convoy will include the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction and LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road.

Dietrich said the convoy will include close to 400 trucks. Drivers can still register online at www.wish convoy.org or in person on the day of the event.

People of all ages are invited to come out for the Family Fest. Activities will include games, vendors, DJ entertainment, food trucks, costumed characters, the famous convoy clowns, a silent auction, a basket raffle, hundreds of trucks to see, and the kickoff of the truck convoy.

“The Family Fest is open to the public,” Dietrich remarked, “with free parking, free admission and free activities for families.”

While past events charged for game tickets, each child will receive free game tickets this year, she added. A variety of food trucks will be on-site for the Family Fest,

including Castenedas Food Truck, Drifters, Mocha Motion Coffee, Piper Belles BBQ and Walk-O Taco.

The festivities have a carnival-like atmosphere, enhanced by the Make-AWish clowns.

“The clowns help to spread joy to attendees and serve a very important role as donation collectors at the event and along the route,” Dietrich said. “Over the years, the convoy clowns have helped to raise thousands of dollars to grant wishes.”

Proceeds from the day will support granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses through MakeA-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.

“Currently, there are 73 kids waiting on their wish to be granted in our Susquehanna Valley region, 29 of which reside right here in Lancaster County,” Dietrich shared. “Make-A-Wish relies 100% on the generosity of the community to be able to grant the wishes of critically ill children. Participating has a direct impact on local families.”

With headquarters in Phoenix, Ariz., MakeA-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s wish-granting organizations. It serves children in all 50 states, as well as in more than 50 countries around the world. Since 1986, Make-A-Wish has

granted more than 8,600 wishes.

Last year, the convoy raised $461,386 for Make-A-Wish. This year, organizers have set a goal of raising $525,000.

“The truck convoy is a legacy event for our chapter, which is honoring its 40th anniversary in 2026,” Dietrich said. “The truck convoy was the first fundraising event organized 37 years ago, and it is amazing that the event lives on today. It plays an extremely important role in the chapter’s ability to grant local wishes. We are able to keep this event going due to the generous spirit of the local community.”

Program to Focus on Revolutionary War

The Millersville Area Historical Society will host a presentation titled “Lancaster Prisoners of War: Transforming British Rebels Into American Revolutionaries” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m. The speaker will be Robyn Lily Davis, an associate professor of history at Millersville University (MU) with expertise in Colonial and Revolutionary War-era America.

Lancaster, a thriving inland city and a major detention center for British and Hessian prisoners of war, largely experienced the American Revolution not through battles but instead through the daily realities of conflict on its streets.

Davis’ talk will reveal the close and often tense encounters with enemy captives that reshaped local loyalties and sharpened divisions between Britons and Americans. A question-and-answer time will close the meeting.

Davis has taught at MU

since 2012 and currently is chair of the History and Philosophy Department. She has been nominated to serve for the next three years as a member of the American Historical Association’s Beveridge Family Prize in American History, for which she will have to read 150 to 160 books each summer. The New York City native earned a Bachelor of Arts in French language and literature from Columbia University before family circumstances took her to Oklahoma, where she developed a liking for history and earned a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma. Although admission is free, donations are appreciated. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com.

A welcome reception will take place at 11 a.m., followed by presentations at 11:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. At 12:15 p.m., giveaway winners will be announced, and at 12:30 p.m., dessert will be served and facility tours will be available. Attendees should wear dressy casual attire.

Youth Field Day

Elizabethtown, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

“We encourage kids and their parents to come to our Youth Field Day if they want to experience a day of outdoor activities,” said Lynn Carruthers, a volunteer with the event. “The 10 stations they will get to experience for 35 minutes each may vary slightly year to year but are typically archery, canoeing, fishing, fly fishing, muzzle loading, trapping, 22 rifle, trap shooting, turkeys (and) wildlife education with the PA game commissioners and Raven Ridge Wildlife Rescue.”

The event is free to attend, no gear is needed and participants will all receive a free lunch. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child, but it’s not required.

While Youth Field Day is an opportunity for kids who don’t have a background in outdoor activities to experience the fun, it’s open to any youths in the age range, said Scott Deiter, who coordinates the canoeing.

“We can say that many kids that start at age 10 return each year for the next four or five years that they fall into the age range,” he shared. “And now, as we are in our 31st year, we are experiencing parents that

come and tell us that they went through Youth Field Day and now they are there with their child.”

Carruthers noted that she learned about the event’s history from a magazine article written in 1999 by Charlie Youtz.

“He wrote, ‘The number of youth involved in outdoor activities has been declining for years,’”

Carruthers said. “In 1991, the late Bob McWilliams, information and education specialist with the PA Game Commission, had an idea.”

He and 25 other sportsmen held a meeting in the northwest regional office of the Game Commission and organized a free, one-day interactive event for youths. Since then, the concept spread across the state. In October of 1995, a group of 70 people formed what is now the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth, and the first local Youth Field Day was held in June 1996. Last year, there were 22 Youth Field Days held over the summer throughout Pennsylvania.

Carruthers emphasized that the day would not be possible without the support of volunteers.

“These are people that love the outdoors and love to teach the kids how to

love it too,” she said. “Many come from the sportsmen’s clubs in Lancaster County and have been volunteering since the Lancaster County Field Day was first held in 1996.”

Each year, the group also recruits new volunteers, including a participant now in his 20s who went through the program as a kid and now helps with either fly fishing or freshwater fishing. Certified instructors with the Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg run the canoeing station, and game wardens operate the PA Game Commission station.

“And they have stories of kids who went through Youth Day and then became game wardens,” Carruthers remarked. “Many of the volunteers have stories from the day, stories of seeing a young child come alive with excitement after they did something at the station. The volunteer shares with others, and we all keep saying, ‘This is why we can keep coming every year and give it our all, just to see young ones show excitement for an outdoor sport.’”

She added that the Lancaster County Youth Field Day is always held on the first Saturday of June, but the host sportsmen’s club is not announced until March

of each year. The event is hosted by one of the four clubs that have a large pond.

The Youth Field Day is funded by donations from area sportsmen’s clubs, outdoor sporting goods stores and some local food companies.

“Also, a donation is given for free printing of pamphlets from a local printing company,” Carruthers said. “The companies and sportsmen’s clubs are not asking for recognition. They are doing it to help keep this goal alive, to let kids experience and love the outdoors.”

Along with a free lunch, kids will receive a goodie bag at the end of the day. Youth Field Day will be held rain or shine, so participants should dress for the weather. Early registration is encouraged. Registration will close on Friday, June 5. If people register early but then cannot attend, they should update their registration by removing their name to make room for other participants.

To register, visit www .register-ed.com/events/ view/241923. For more information, see the group’s Facebook page by searching for “Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth.”

opportunities around here. We all enjoy fishing. We all come from different backgrounds, but we share this love of being on the water. It feels good to introduce people to these sports.”

Housed in a renovated farmhouse, PFBC’s Southeast Region office employs administrative staff and law enforcement or Water Conservation Officers, who enforce fishing and boating regulations, creel limits and water pollution rules, as well as promote water safety and assist in trout stocking operations.

The Southeast Region office also processes boat registrations, launch permits and discounted fishing licenses for disabled veterans, and it offers educational materials and opportunities for residents to borrow fishing rods.

“Our general mission is to protect, conserve and enhance the state’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities,” said Desko. “We do deliver educational programming in the Southeast Region. We do a lot of introductory programs, like teaching people how to fish and teaching people how to boat.”

The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is operated in one of six geographical regions throughout the commonwealth. The Southeast Region is made up of Lancaster, Berks, Chester, Lehigh, Bucks, Delaware, Schuylkill, Northampton, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties and is home to a host of lakes; streams; and major waterways, like the Schuylkill, Delaware and Conestoga rivers.

The Susquehanna River serves as a boundary between the Southeast and Southcentral regions.

“There’s a diversity of experiences in the Southeast Region,” said Desko. “We have stocked trout streams and wild trout streams. There are also migratory fish; the Delaware River has shad coming up. There are paddling opportunities for whitewater kayaking, as well as gentle paddling on lakes and ponds.”

“In other regions, mountains and back -

woods serve as the backdrops,” continued Desko. “We have plenty of fishing opportunities here, but they may be in places you don’t expect them to be. There are places you can catch monster flathead catfish. There are a lot of places in this region where you can get into some exceptional fishing; it’s just cities serve as the backgrounds instead of mountains.”

An inland state, Pennsylvania boasts a total of more than 86,000 miles of streams and rivers. In the state, nearly 850,000 fishing licenses, 350,000 boat registrations and 150,000 launch permits are sold each year, all of which help fund the PFBC.

The PFBC stocks 3.2 million raised trout in 684 streams and 130 lakes in Pennsylvania annually.

“We do see people across ages, from youth to retirees,” said Desko. “You have a lot of adults who are starting to mentor their children out on the water. When anglers were surveyed, they said the reason they go out is not to catch big fish; it’s to spend time with family and friends, unplug and get away for recreation. They’re looking to spend time in the outdoors and reset their minds.”
