Willow Street To Welcome New Car Show n Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., First Responders Friends will host the inaugural Pequea Township Classic Car Show in conjunction with the West Willow Fire Company. This will be a rain-or-shine event and will take place at the West Willow Fire Company. On the day of the event, West Willow Road will be closed from Millwood Road to Cobblestone Drive. There will be same-day registration for vehicles, which will include a lunch voucher. The first 200 cars registered will receive a souvenir dash plaque and a goodie bag. The dash plaque will be sponsored by Melanie B. Scheid Funeral Directors and the goodie bags by Jaxxon Promotions. The West Willow Fire Company will provide chicken barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs, and beverages for purchase. Music will be provided by DJ Rob Mullins, and Life Mennonite Fellowship Church will have a yard sale. At 2:15 p.m., 10 trophies will be awarded, including best of show,

Several museums and historical sites had to temporarily close their doors to the public as a result of the pandemic. One of them was LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. Within the past year, the organization used the closure as an opportunity to begin tackling several digitization projects it had wanted to complete for decades. In 2020, LancasterHistory went through the process of digitizing its entire James Buchanan collection, which consists of about 9,000 individual documents. See Digitizing Project pg 6

In May of 2020, Tabor Community Services and Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) began the process of merging. Over the summer, administrators and board members dealt with the legalities of funds transfers and by fall, approvals by local and state agencies had been granted. At the same time, board members were updating bylaws, and the organization was working through setting organizational procedures that would create a single entity working to offer housing advocacy and financial empowerment to area residents.

In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homeless-

Ascension Academy has awarded its first Instrumental Scholarship to clarinetist Andre Hurst. The academy will provide Andre with a four-year scholarship to study with Janine Thomas, principal clarinetist of the Lancaster and Harrisburg symphony orchestras. Andre is a ninth-grader at Hempfield High School. In addition to playing in his school ensembles, he was selected for District Band in eighth and ninth grades. He is the first chair clarinetist in the youth chamber orchestra Allegretto, which will perform Beethoven’s 7th Symphony this spring. Andre is frequently invited to play with the Franklin & Marshall College band. He has been studying with Thomas for four years and has played advanced repertoire such as the See Hurst pg 4

Community members may hear Andre play music on Sunday, May 16, at 9:30 a.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church’s Music Ministry Sunday, a celebration of music featuring students of the Ascension Academy. The church is located at 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street. Masks are required during the service. The mission of Ascension Academy is to provide educational programs in the visual and musical arts to students of all ages and levels. The Education Department of Lancaster EMS announced its “Learn While You Earn” program. The program will be the first full-time academy for eligible candidates to earn a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMSapproved EMT - Basic Certification. This program is a collaborative effort between Lancaster EMS and PA CareerLink. Eligible candidates will be hired as a full-time Lancaster EMS employee and compensated at a training hourly wage while in attendance at the Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS’ EMT- Basic Certification course, which requires a minimum of 40 hours per week. Upon successful completion of the program and after obtaining a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS certification, the employee will be promoted to EMT-B with the commensurate pay rate increase and associated benefits. Candidates will also agree to an 18-month employment commitment to Lancaster EMS after certifi-
cation. EMT candidates will be recruited from the general population with emphasis on high school graduating seniors. Classes will begin in September at the Lancaster EMS Millersville Station, 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville. The first academy class is expected to be completed by midDecember, with candidates working effective Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022. The application and employment process will consist of a phone interview, program entrance assessments as well as a personal interview by a formal panel of current Lancaster EMS employees. Following completion of all pre-acceptance processes, the individual will either be offered a position or placed on a potential candidate waitlist. This document, the Mayor of Lancaster’s register of “free persons of color” from 1820 to 1849, is among the items to be digitized by LancasterHistory.
“That process helped us figure out how to individualize projects and seek funding for digitizing pockets of our collection,” explained Robin Sarratt, vice president of LancasterHistory. Recently, LancasterHistory was awarded a Historical & Archival Records Care grant from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission to digitize its collections pertaining to the history of 19th-century congressman Thaddeus Stevens, black residents of Lancaster, and indigenous people since the 18th century. LancasterHistory will use the $4,669 grant to provide online access to 138 items from the Thaddeus

Stevens collection as well as 425 documents and manuscripts from 24 different historic collections pertaining to people of color in Lancaster County. The project will begin in August and is expected to be completed by May 2022. LancasterHistory will work with the Backstage Library Works of Bethlehem to digitize the materials, which will then be uploaded to LancasterHistory’s collections database at https://collections.lancaster history.org. The database is free for public use. “There are a lot of underrepresented populations in our collection and collections in general across the United States, and although these records have been accessible to the public, we want to make them more widely accessible and bring them into light,” said Heather Tennies, director of archival services at LancasterHistory. Tennies explained that there is a burden on the researcher to locate these materials because they are difficult to find. Although these documents were accessible to the public before LancasterHistory closed, people had to know where to look and whom to ask in order to access them. As a courtesy to the public and to underrepresented populations, LancasterHistory wants to bring these records to the forefront. “I’m excited for researchers across the globe to have access to these documents,” added Sarratt. “For people interested in researching their family history, community history, neighborhood history, this project will be impactful.” Anyone who has material related to black residents of Lancaster and or indigenous people may contact archives@lancasterhistory.org. Now, the organization is ready to announce its new name - Tenfold and introduce supporters and those who are less familiar with the work of the organization to the next chapter in the vision for providing affordable housing. On Tuesday, May 11, at 7 p.m., Tenfold will hold a virtual celebration called “Unlocking Opportunity, Multiplying Our Impact.” The event will be hosted by Brian Roche of WGAL TV. According to Mike McKenna, CEO of Tenfold, the event will include a video that tells what Tenfold brings to the community through the experience of a client who benefited from services from what were once Tabor and LHOP. “We will also be talking about the future of this combined organization and sharing what that vision looks like,” said McKenna, who added that a silent auction and two musical performances will round out the hourlong presentation. “There’s a lot of great content, and we are going to keep it moving,” said McKenna. As the merger was happening, COVID-19 restrictions and the resulting impact on clients presented challenges for the organization. “The clients we were serving were really hard hit by the loss of income … which put a lot of households at greater risk of eviction,” said McKenna, who noted that although homeless services were strained, adaptations were made to continue to provide support. In addition, although LHOP personnel had moved into the
Tabor building at 308 E. King St., Lancaster, all offices were closed, and employees were working remotely. “We didn’t see clients in person with a few exceptions,” said McKenna. “Most of our counseling and case management was happening through Zoom and phone and text.” Challenges were apparent in bringing the two teams together as well, but regular virtual meetings are addressing those growing pains. “It’s more challenging in a virtual environment, but it has forced us to be more intentional,” stated McKenna. The virtual event will have several goals, according to McKenna. “We want to reinforce to everyone that the programs and services that they have known and cared about are continuing (to address) affordable and financial empowerment through the lens of partnership,” he said. “We value all the partners we work with in the community, and … we see all of that as contributing to the idea that there will be a future with greater equitable housing and financial security.” There is no cost to watch the livestreamed event, and Tenfold invites members of the community to hold watch parties with family members and friends. Since 1970, Camp Cadet of Lancaster County has provided youths ages 11 to 13 with an in-depth look at careers in law enforcement with the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. Last year, due to the
COVID-19 pandemic, the camp closed its doors for the summer. Trooper Kelly Osborne, director of the program, said she did not want to let another summer go by without Camp Cadet, so she improvised. From Monday, June 21, to Friday, Aug. 13, Camp Cadet will be held virtually. The program will be devel-

oped by and coordinated through the Pennsylvania State Police with the assistance of local police officers and state and local agencies that work with law enforcement. Over the course of these eight weeks, cadets will complete outdoor activities, community service, physical training, assignments, and quizzes. Throughout the program, cadets will learn about the different facets of law enforcement, including forensics, canine, police training, and the criminal justice system. At the end of the program, there will be an in-person graduation ceremony where cadets will receive their own uniform. Awards will also be given at the end of the program to cadets who excel in the categories of service, fitness, and knowledge.
This year, Camp Cadet has widened the age range so youths ages 11 to 17 can sign up. “We missed a whole generation of middle-schoolers last year, so we wanted to offer them the chance to attend camp if they wanted to,” stated Osborne. Boys’ Lacrosse Team Improves to 8-3 Overall

“It took us a bit to get going,” head coach Zack Charles stated, “but we leaned on our Hollinger brothers (Clayton 8 goals, Nick 20 saves) and Nafziger with three. Our leaders stepped up and the team followed plus our defense, led by senior JD Robinson, was awesome after the first quarter.” Leading scorer C. Hollinger matched his season-high with eight goals. Jack Barley (1a) scored twice and Hinkle (3a) also scored. The Comets were coming off a 12-9 loss to Manheim Township on April 22. Tied at 2-2 after the first period, Manor gave up five second quarter goals, scored once and found themselves down 7-3 at the break. They regrouped in the second half, winning 6-5 but it wasn’t enough. “We just could not clear the ball for a good portion of the second quarter,” said head coach Zack Charles. The Comets got a four-goal effort from Clayton Hollinger. Chipping in with two goals each was Cole Spezialetti and Isiac Nafziger while Isaac Hostetter added one goal and Erik Hinkle, Jack Shipley and Dylan Keene each assisted once. In goal, Nick Hollinger recorded nine saves.
Manor improved to 8-3 overall with last Tuesday’s comefrom-behind 8-4 win over Elizabethtown. The Bears led 1-0 in the first quarter but the Comets scored two or more in each of the next three frames to win. C. Hollinger racked up five goals adn two assists. Eli Warfel (1g), Barley (1g, 1a) and Nafziger (1g, 2a) also contributed. TENNIS After clinching their first ever Section One crown, the Comet tennis team earned a 3-2, comefrom-behind thriller over Cedar Crest in the semifinals of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships Monday, April 26. Both teams were undefeated coming in. With doubles losses by PJ Fahey and Nico Mann and Paul Karpouzis and Seb Bookmiller, singles needed a sweep to advance. Stefo Billis, at No. 1, Curtis Rabatin, No. 2 and Davis Maxwell, with a hard-fought 6-0/7-6 (7-2) win over Garrett Muraika locked up the victory. “All five courts play at the same time,” noted head coach Amanda Pryzbylkowski. “Doubles struggled. They are not used to as much pressure and playing a longer format (needing to win two of three set matches) seemed to hinder their performance.

In the finals on Tuesday, the Comets met another undefeated team in Lancaster Catholic and this time came up short, 3-1 at Donegal. Rabatin’s 6-0, 6-1 win over Miles Durrett was the only Comet victory. Davis dropped a 6-4, 6-1 match at No. 3 while Billis, at No. 1, did not finish his match as Catholic had secured the clinching point before his match ended. VOLLEYBALL At about the midway point of the season, the Comets have just two wins against seven losses. Two of those losses were 3-1 results. Of the 33 games they’ve played, not including tournaments, the Comets have scored 20 points or more in 22 of those games and six times they’ve reached 19 points. Their record does not indicate the competitiveness they have shown this year. Playing twice in three days, the Comets suffered 3-0 losses to both Conestoga Valley, April 22 and Exeter on the 24th. CV worked hard to win 25-17, 25-19, 26-24 as did Exeter, taking a pair of 25-21 wins after a 25-16 opening set. Riley Walton put down 13 kills against the Bucks but it was Sawyer Shertzer with a dominating 22 kills that spearheaded CV’s attack. Max Bushong (10 digs), Wyatt Rohrer (23 assists), Luke Thomas (2 blocks) and Walton (2 aces) led the stat sheet. Against Exeter, Rohrer’s 24 assists led to eight Greyson Schatz kills. Isaac Hopstetter served one ace, Bushong finished with 13 digs and Walton added one block. Last Tuesday the Comets slipped against Hempfield. The Knights won 25-17, 25-11, 25-15. BASEBALL After a 9-8 thriller over Ephrata, the Comets won for the second time in a row Monday, April 30 when they hung an 8-3 loss on Solanco in Quarryville. It was their fourth win of the season. Manor held a slim 2-1 lead after two innings but then started to pull away, plating four runs in the third and two in the fourth. The Mules did rally in the seventh, scoring two but it wasn’t enough. Jamison Ford went 3-4 while Reed Lawrence and Hunter Sipel (2RBI) chipped in with two hits each. Noah Beach also finished with two RBIs. On the hill, Sipel struck out 12, walked one and scattered six hits in six innings of work. Dalton Green gave up two hits in the final inning and struck out two as well. That momentum, however, did not carry over to Wednesday’s outing against Hempfield. Tied at 1-1 in the first, Hempfield pulled away with six runs in the third and seven in the sixth to win 18-2.

TRACK Monday Penn Manor’s Graham Thomas set a new school record in the 3200, posting a winning time of 9:22.93 and breaking Dave Henry’s record of 9:26 set in 1982. And Kyle Murr remained undefeated on the year in both the long and triple jumps, leading the Comets to an 86-65 victory over Warwick in Lititz Monday, April 26. “It was cool to see Graham break that record and it was most impressive that he ran the whole race all by himself,” said head coach Ben Shober. “No competition to push him.” Murr finished ahead of teammate Hunter Hoffman in both the long (21-.25) and triple (43-2.5) and was second in the high. “And the 4x400 relay (Best, Wentzel, Hetrick) won a comefrom-behind battle with Leo Medvedkin closing the gap and winning,” noted Shober. The Comets were also strong in the throws with Jaryd Kleinhaus and Evan Jurgenson going 1-2 in the shot and Aaron Eaby (second in the javelin) and Brayden Clow doing the same in the discus. Manor also got a first from Drew Lebo in the pole vault (9-0). The girls team, also 2-3, had a tougher time, dropping a 101-50 final but not without some highlights. Jordan Schucker (111-5), Cassidy McCollum and Alyssa Heagy swept the javelin, Gertrude Moenga won the shot, and Eden Crisman was tops in the pole vault. “The javelin girls each threw personal records,” noted Shober. “And Jasmine Miller ventured into the field events, taking second in the long with only one day of practice.” Anne Bibus recorded a second place PR in the mile, Alyssa Heagy was second in the high jump and Jayln Clow was second in the discus.

SOFTBALL Manor’s disappointing 2-1 loss to Elizabethtown on April 22 dropped the Comets overall record to 12-2. Both teams recorded six hits but the Bears were able to break a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull off the upset. “It was 45 degrees and their pitching was slower than we were used to,” said head coach Dave Stokes. “We just didn’t get the hit when we needed it. And an error led to the winning run.” The Comets got back on track with Wednesday’s 3-0 win at Hempfield, leaving them tied with Warwick as the leaders of Section One. Kaelin Gabel’s base hit plated Emily Riggs who reached with a single and advanced on a sac bunt. A two out Kylie Goss base hit made it 2-0 in the second. Bella Peters opened the seventh with a base hit and courtesy runner Kira Green scored on sac bunt by Bria Booth and a two base throwing error.

When Bauer was getting ready to graduate with a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2018, a headhunter was looking for the top pick of Bauer’s graduating class. This person turned out to be Bauer. “In church, we talk about being ‘called,’ and I was literally called on the phone,” he said. That was how Bauer became an associate rector at St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster. After having lunch with a member of St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, Bauer applied and was interviewed for a position as rector at the church. When the Rev. Dr. Richard Bauer graduated with a Bachelor of Science in legal studies from Nova Southeastern University, he knew he didn’t want to be a lawyer. While attending school, he was also building a career in music; some of his songs were on MTV and he opened for musicians such as Joan Jett. After a year went by, he applied to a graduate program in religious studies at Florida International University. Soon enough, the faculty trained Bauer as an adjunct professor. Despite his graduate research, Bauer was not attending church. Then he became interested in meditating and, while meditating, realized that Jesus was the basis of his faith. “I couldn’t shake it,” he said. While on a trip to the Holy Land, Bauer and his wife were watching the baptisms of pilgrims in the Jordan River. Bauer saw a man with a woman who had scars on her face, and the man filled a five-gallon jug with water from the river. “It was clear to me that this guy wanted to bring this big jug of healing water home with him on the plane, and that level of faith and hope that there’s a promise for healing struck me to my core,” noted Bauer. Suddenly, he knew what he was supposed to do with his life: ministry. A woman who worked at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and School in Fort Lauderdale watched Bauer’s band play every Saturday night. She knew Bauer’s education and teaching background, so she asked Bauer to talk to her church leader. “This guy and I
