The basis of navigating grief

(BASIS) is a grief support ministry for parents who have lost children. The program is a branch of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), an organization that provides assistance and training services to churches and schools for those with special needs. BASIS operates seven different support groups, one of which is located in Quarryville and also serves families from Pequea, Lampeter-Strasburg and other parts of the Southern End.

The Southern End group meets on the second Tuesday of every month and begins each session with a small devotion. Then, group leaders offer booklets and information on a topic that relates to mourning the loss of a child, with the materials often based in Scripture. For the rest of the meeting, which is generally one to two hours long, participants may ask questions and have an open discussion to share about their personal journey and struggles with loss.

Pequea Township car show slated

The First Responders Friends will host its third annual Pequea Township Classic Car Show at the West Willow Fire Company, 192 West Willow Road, Willow Street, on Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. West Willow Road will be closed for the event from Millwood Road to Cobblestone Drive. A rain date has been set for Saturday, May 20.

The West Willow Fire Company will have food and beverages available to be purchased, and live entertainment will be provided by DJ Rob Mullins and the band 1st Wave Hodads. Door prizes and a prize

drawing will be held at 1 p.m., and trophies will be awarded to vehicle owners at 2 p.m. Same-day vehicle registration will be available at the event, and the first 200 car owners to register will receive a souvenir dash plaque and a goodie bag.

The First Responders Friends began organizing the car show as a way to generate funds to support the West Willow Fire Company, Pequea Township Police and Lancaster EMS. The money raised from the event will help each organization cover general maintenance and equipment costs, unless a specific project warrants the use of the proceeds. When the Pequea Township Police moved to a new location a

BASIS also seeks to provide support for grieving parents beyond its monthly meetings. The group accepts contact information for those who wish to speak or pray on the phone and mails out informational literature from its library. The group supports parents for up to five years by sending notes of encouragement on significant dates such as the birthday of a loved one and the anniversary of a loss. Once a year, BASIS hosts a free breakfast for parents, which includes a guest speaker.

“People can come just to listen. It’s a confidential and safe place,” said Dan Steinman, director of BASIS. “It doesn’t matter if you go to church or not. People come to share where they’re at, open up and say exactly how they feel.”

Dan and his wife, Phyllis, became participants of BASIS six years ago after the loss of their son. Although Dan refrained from attending the meetings at first, he eventually joined his wife in participating in the meetings, and says that it See Grief support group pg 7

Annual wreath-laying ceremony held at Woodward Hill Cemetery

On April 22, the annual wreath laying ceremony to honor James Buchanan was held at the former president’s tomb in Woodward Hill Cemetery in Lancaster. The tradition of laying a fresh wreath of flowers at United States presidents’ tombs each year has been observed for decades and is completed for every individual who has held the office.

The ceremony included remarks from guests such as Assistant Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania See Ceremony pg 3

few years ago, the First Responders Friends donated money to assist with construction costs and various expenses required to convert the building to a police station.

Members of the community first created the First Responders Friends to assist the Conestoga Police Department with outlying expenses and projects. Once the Conestoga

Police Department disbanded, the First Responders Friends shifted its focus to support other organizations such as local fire departments and EMS. In addition to the Pequea Township car show, the organization coordinates the Conestoga Classic Car Show in September every year.

“It’s important to give back to the men and women who serve the

community,” said April Perez, treasurer of the First Responders Friends. “They don’t always get the funding they need when they need it, so it’s great to be able to put together events to help them.”

Perez added that the event creates an atmosphere that the whole community enjoys; the older generations can reminisce about their younger days, and the younger generations learn about older automobiles as they peruse hundreds of classic cars. The event also offers a trophy for the category of modern muscle cars each year to incorporate

modern-day car enthusiasts. For more information, contact firstrespondersfriends@gmail.com or search for “First Responders Friends” on Facebook.

Army National Guard James McCormick, chairman of the Lancaster County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino, Lancaster City Chief of Police Richard Mendez, Nathan Gilchrist III of Masonic Lodge 43, Jean Weglarz of Woodward Hill Cemetery and director of President James Buchanan’s Wheatland Patrick Clarke. The event was hosted by LancasterHistory in partnership with Woodward Hill Cemetery, and an invocation and benediction was delivered by Timothy Mentzer of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Many groups provided support for the ceremony, including the Pilot Club of Lancaster, Scouts BSA Troop 58, the Lancaster Fencibles, the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard and the 328th Brigade Support Battalion of the Pennsylvania National Guard.

“It’s a small and solemn service to bring a wreath to the gravesite and remember that president’s service,” Clarke said. “Not every community has

Throughout the 2022-23 Arts & Culture season, The Trust Performing Arts Center has partnered with Lancaster International Piano Festival (LIPF) for a series of concerts. The third and final concert in the series is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 5, in the Great Hall of The Trust, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, and will feature the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble,

a former president who they can claim as one of their community members. Whether you feel that Buchanan was a good president or a horrible one, he was a Pennsylvanian.”

The date of the ceremony was selected to fall near Buchanan’s date of birth, which is April 23. LancasterHistory first became involved with the event to assist with the ceremony and tie it into its educational programming, as the organization primarily offers exhibits and tours at Buchanan’s former home in Lancaster.

Many of the groups participate in the ceremony each year because of their direct relation to the former president. Buchanan is considered to be one of the earliest members of Pennsylvania’s National Guard due to his serving as a militia member in the War of 1812. Due to this connection, for the annual service the Pennsylvania National Guard provides soldiers to perform color guard

a nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting high-quality performances of chamber music repertoire.

The Gabriel Chamber Ensemble consists of Simon Maurer and Dana Allaband on violin, Agnès Maurer on viola, Ai-Lin Hsieh on cello and Xun Pan on piano. Now in its 34th season in Schuylkill County, the ensemble offers a wide selection of cham-

duties, raise a new American flag and speak on Buchanan’s history and involvement in the military. The Red Rose Honor Guard donates a new flag for the raising every year and offers the service of one of its members to play taps for the ceremony.

During Buchanan’s time as president and as a member of Congress, he consistently voted to provide support for the country’s military.

Buchanan was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and became master of the Masonic Lodges in Lancaster, Lebanon and York while serving in the House of Representatives. One of Lancaster city’s seminal members of the police department was a close friend of Buchanan’s. Both the current chief of police and members of the Masonic Lodge said a few words for the ceremony. The Lancaster Fencibles, a group of military re-enactors, performed a rifle salute during the service. The original Fencibles were

volunteer militia members whose duties included guarding Buchanan when he was elected president and traveled to Washington, D.C.

“It’s a valuable thing to recognize the history of Lancaster,” Clarke said. “These are opportunities to learn about the past, hear how that time period affected our days today and learn from it.”

The Comet baseball team halted a four-game losing streak with a convincing 7-0, senior day shutout over McCaskey last Monday, April 24. It was Manor’s third shutout win of the season. They backed that up with a 7-5 nailbiter at Warwick on Wednesday.

Grant Fry earned the win over McCaskey, allowing three hits while striking out three over six innings. Danny Santana pitched the final inning in relief.

The Comets used a seven-hit attack to secure the win with Isaac

Braegelmann and Santana each collecting two. With single runs in each of the first three innings, Manor broke things open with a three-run fourth.

The Comets were coming off back-to-back losses against Hempfield and Elizabethtown on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

“Friday was a tough test, going to Hempfield a week after beating them at our place,” said head coach Tom Fish. “We faced their tough left-handed pitcher, Logan Harrelson.”

Despite a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Comets suffered a 9-3

loss with Hempfield’s five-run fourth inning causing the most damage.

Fry’s base hit scored Cole Miller for the early run. “Cole showed heads up baserunning when the cutoff man bobbled the throw in from right,” said Fish. “And starting pitcher Danny Santana picked off a runner and made a nice play on a hard grounder to help us escape early trouble.

“Senior Ben Hermansen and junior Ian Switzer each pitched well in relief and gave us a chance to get back in the game.”

Saturday morning, the visiting Bears pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of four Comet errors to post a 9-2 non-league win.

“They hit the ball all over the field and were helped by some inconsistent defense on our end,” noted Fish. “Senior Grant Fry continues to be our most consistent player, both at the plate and on the mound. He tripled in two baserunners to pull us within two before Elizabethtown broke it open later. Grant has been really good for us, and I’m proud of the season he’s put together. The big fella is going to

need to carry this team if we want to sneak into districts,” the coach added.

The Comets evened the series against Warwick with a nine-hit, 7-5 win on Wednesday. The Warriors erased a 3-0 deficit with five runs in the fourth only to see Manor charge back with three in the sixth and one more in the seventh for the win.

Braegelmann (2RBI) and Trevor Adams led the way with two hits each.

Bryce Avery earned the win, surrendering zero runs and zero hits, while striking out four and walking one over two innings. Christopher Hubbs threw the final inning. Brayden Ecker pitched the first four innings, allowing five runs on three hits and striking out four.

SOFTBALL

After a 4-3 loss at Township, the softball team has put together four straight wins, including three in the span of four days. The Comets topped Hempfield 6-3 on Friday, April 21 and then put together two lopsided victories. They pounded out 14 hits in a 13-2 win at Elizabethtown on Saturday morning, the 22nd, and then posted their third shutout of the season at McCaskey on Monday, the 24th, 11-0.

“We finally had a little luck contributing to 18 hits,” said head coach Dave Stokes of the Elizabethtown win. “Juleigh Bowmaster pitched outstanding again. Their two runs were solo homers.”

Tied at 1-1 in the first inning, Manor pulled away with a three run second and added five more in the fourth. Manor’s first five batters accounted for 14 hits with Kira Green (2 doubles), Bria Booth, Amelia Trout, and Maddie

Mitchell each recording three hits.

Against the Knights, the Comets took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning and fought off a 3-3 tie with three more runs in the sixth to finish on top. Bailey (2RBI) and Trout (1 triple) both went 2-4 to lead the eight-hit attack. Bowmaster struck out three, walked one and scattered four hits.

In the five-inning shutout over McCaskey, the Comets scored nine runs over the second and third innings to leave little doubt of the outcome. They out hit the hosts 9-4 and Bowmaster fanned four batters.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

For the third time this year the girls’ lacrosse team went over the 20 goals scored mark in a lopsided 21-3 result at CV on Thursday, April 20. Nine different players scored, six with multiple goals, as the Comets built a 12-2 first half lead.

Joelle Kroesen tied her seasonhigh goals scored mark with six to pace the attack. Catherina Rabatin (1a) and Erin Shipley each added hat tricks with Grace Gerner, Jarliah Ferko and Claire Eckroat scoring twice each. Lillie Swanson added one tally.

Mackenzie Nafziger needed just five saves to record the ‘W’.

Against the Falcons on Monday, the 24th, Nafziger and Brooklyn Ayala combined for seven saves in a tight 7-4 road win. The Comets topped Cedar Crest 13-5 in their first half meeting but this time around it was 3-2 at the half. Manor doubled the hosts efforts after the break.

Kroesen (2g, 2a) and Shipley (2g) led a balanced attack. Mia Jones (1g, 1a), Gerner (1g) and Ferko (1g) also contributed.

VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball team posted mixed

results over the last week, dropping a 3-1 result at Hempfield on Thursday, April 20 and blanking Daniel Boone at home on the 24th. They currently sit at 6-7 overall.

The Comets pulled out a 28-26 win in the first set against the Knights but then dropped two straight, including a 25-23 third set. Hempfield took the match with a 25-18 fourth set.

“We went into this match with a lot of confidence, and it showed in the first and third sets,” said head coach Chris Telesco. “However, we didn’t have the killer instinct when we needed it. When we hit the 20’s we played safe, and you can’t do that against a team like Hempfield,” he added. “Set three was a deciding moment, and we came up short. That was certainly a lesson learned.

“While this was a loss, we did gain confidence,” the coach stated. “Guys like Noah Reen and Roman Keefer and Luke Thomas swung confidently. Sophomore Vinnie West stepped up to provide passing against a tough Hempfield serve. We were proud of the leadership of players like Luke Thomas, Wyatt Rohrer, and Noah Reen, who kept hope alive down the stretch.

“Looking ahead, we need to pull out an “unexpected” win or two in these last six matches in order to make sure we make districts,” he added. “This is totally doable for this group.”

In their non-league win over Daniel Boone, the Comets posted scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-14. Harry Whited and Reen were strong at the net with 11 kills each. Rohrer dished 31 assists and served a pair of aces while Elijah Julian was credited with 17 digs. Keefer and Thomas each put up four blocks.

Shortly after becoming involved with BASIS, Dan left his job to work for the ministry. He noticed that BASIS did not have a support group based in the Southern End, and he decided to start one. BOYS’ LACROSSE

After an 8-7 thriller at CV on March 30, the Comets left no doubt this second time around, topping the Bucks 13-9 at home on April 20. A 6-1 run through the second quarter fueled a 9-3 halftime lead. CV came back to win the second half 6-4 but it was too little, too late.

Nick Hollinger was impressive in goal, collecting 21 saves, ten more than CV’s Soren Stoltzfus.

Grant Bradburn’s five goal, two assists day led all scorers. Adam Hollinger (2a), Benedict Flinchbaugh (2a) and Eli Warfel all chipped in with two goals while Aiden Gerlach and Ayden Hoin each scored one.

At home on the 24th the Comets won all four quarters in a 17-7 win over Cedar Crest, despite the Falcon’s Aaron Fink netting six goals. Hoin, Warfel (1a) and Flinchbaugh each scored three times. Hollinger (2a), Gerlach, and Ish Bolorin added one goal apiece and Willard Smith and Bradburn were credited with one assist each.

Aesthetically pleasing, beauty takes on a deeper meaning when shared with others. In the natural world, there are few things recognized as more beautiful than plants, including trees and flowers.

Manheim Township resident Dennis Denenberg has a deep appreciation for the magnificent and complex 1-acre garden that surrounds his home at 410 Valley Road, Lancaster. But that appreciation blooms into pure enjoyment when visitors see it, smell it and experience it.

In fact, Denenberg has made his garden, affectionately referred to as The Gardens of Oz, available as a nonprofit venue for charitably minded

organizations to host fundraisers, meetings and events free of charge.

In return for the use of the garden, Denenberg does accept donations to Diana’s Dreamers, a charity he founded at Millerville University to honor his late sister Diana DenenbergDurand, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2007.

Denenberg said that the garden has already been reserved for four events this season but that he’d like to see it used four times more.

Guided by a pair of certified horticulturists, known as the “Garden Godesses,” the tour takes about an hour to complete.

“My joy comes from seeing people enjoy the gardens,” said Denenberg. “I like to hear people laugh

and ask questions. There is nothing as spectacular as nature. Even our grandest man-made monuments don’t come close. It’s fun to share it.”

Plural, The Gardens of Oz is actually an arrangement of more than two dozen separate but intertwining gardens. Mixing both common and exotic plants, the garden features a bamboo grove, fish ponds, a garden dedicated to the Emerald City and Yellow Brick Road, as well as a pink garden honoring the memory of his sister.

The Gardens of Oz is home to more than 500 species of thriving vegetation, each with its own unique life cycle and color pattern.

appreciate the layout, but every person wants to see colors.”

“Each season affects the garden drastically,” continued Denenberg. “My favorite time is spring. It’s spectacular. Once the first blooms come, from then on, there are colors everywhere. Then with the interaction of animals, the bees and the birds, it’s magical.”

It’s also natural beauty 28 years in the making.

“Every garden has a different vibe,” said Denenberg. “This is a ‘Wow.’ Here, you’re in the garden. You’re not just observing it. You’re at the whim of nature. Gardeners

When he purchased the property, Denenberg decided after an initial mowing of the lawn that he wanted his yard to be a garden. Now, a blade of grass cannot be found anywhere. It took Denenberg eight years to fill in the acre lot with plants and flowers, a process he continues to tweak today. Denenberg has been offering tours of the garden for about 15 years now.

“It’s morphed in that the garden now is much more mature,” said Denenberg. “Life is about giving back. It doesn’t matter how rich or poor you are; give back to others. Even a smile can make someone’s day.”
