Penn Manor High School
teacher Lauren Ciemiewicz and her students are in concert over many things, most significantly their shared love of music.
They do, however, disagree on one topic: Who deserves the credit for all the students’ successes?
The Comets’ chorus members concluded the competition season at the state conference April 9 to 12 at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions in the Poconos.
“They did absolutely phenomenally,” Ciemiewicz said of her students.
Piano accompanist Jordan Chen finished first, Matthew Palmeri placed fourth in Bass I, and Bailey Floyd was sixth in Alto I. David Ferre (Tenor I) and Ava Wolfersberger (Alto 2) also earned the opportunity to participate on the state level.
“Being the piano accompanist for all-state chorus allowed me to collaborate with talented singers across the state, and I met one of my favorite directors (Rollo
Dilworth from Temple University),” Jordan said. “There was a rush of salads between rehearsals, great times in the waterpark, and bonding over late-night snacks in the lobby. In all the chaos, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to create music with other passionate musicians.”
Matthew said, “(The year) was a lot of fun. I really enjoy singing, especially with my friends and with Mrs. C directing us. She really helps us, and I couldn’t have done it without her.”

Loft is rising to new heights
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
To paraphrase Ricky Nelson, people will come from miles around, and there will be magic in the air. But when you get to the garden party, you won’t recognize the place. It won’t look the same.
Loft Community Partnership (LCP) will hold its second annual Garden Luncheon Fundraiser
Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The garden party will take place in what will eventually become Loft’s new home, 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville. People can purchase a ticket or a table. Registration is required with a deadline of Monday, May 12. Go to www.loftcp.org/ events to register or for more information.

Southern End Tracksters growing by leaps and bounds
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
On your mark, S.E.T., go!
The Southern End Tracksters are in the starting blocks, preparing to start a third season.
The Tracksters are an Amateur Athletic Association (AAU) track and field team operated by Solanco High School head coach Jen McDowell. It is made up of athletes ages 4 through 18 from the Solanco, Penn Manor, and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts.
“We have started this
camaraderie in the Southern End,” said McDowell. “That was the whole idea of the Southern End Tracksters. To get other people involved. Track is one of those unique sports. We’ve got rivals, but not like you do in a lot of other sports. We are there to support and guide each other. My kids are learning from some of the Penn Manor coaches. Penn Manor kids are learning from us. We’re seeing it pay off already at the high school level.”
There is no cost to join the Southern End Tracksters

program, but participants must pay to join the AAU and pay an entry fee for meets. Athletes can pay for a uniform or borrow one. Anyone interested in joining the Tracksters can email McDowell at southernendtracksters@ gmail.com.
The Tracksters club is a W-9 nonprofit seeking business sponsorships as the team continues to grow. There were 12 members in the first season, most of whom were on Solanco’s high school squad. That number grew to 55 last year. “It was a goal of mine when I took over the (Solanco High School) track program (five years ago),” McDowell said. “My goal was to get some of those younger ones involved in it. Last year, when word started getting around that I was getting all these kids, I was still getting lots of emails. We want the parents to know there is an option to do something over the summer.”
Twice-weekly practices will begin in early May for athletes in sixth grade and younger. When junior high and high school athletes join once school ends, there will be three or four practices a week, most in the evening, but McDowell is considering adding some morning workouts. “None of the practices are mandatory, but obviously if you practice
more, you learn more,” McDowell said. Some practices will be held at Solanco High School, and others will take place at Penn Manor High School. The first meet will be in Coatesville on Saturday, June 14.
“I am hoping they will enjoy track, learn the events, and be part of our team when they hit junior high and high school,” said McDowell. “But most importantly, I hope they learn how to work as a team, set goals individually, and learn lifelong lessons.”
Until McDowell started the Tracksters, there was no club in the area for younger track athletes to practice with experienced coaches. “Track and field doesn’t have a feeder program,” she said. “We’re not like soccer and football, where they start really young, and a lot of them aren’t exposed to it. That’s one thing we noticed last year when some of the younger ones came in and said, ‘Oh, this is fun, and it gives us something to do over the summer.’”
AAU also offers the chance for athletes to learn events such as the javelin or hurdles that are not held during junior high meets. “Kids will come to me next year with two years of jav experience. Normally, I get

a freshman in, and I have to explain to them, ‘OK, this is a jav.’ They can start hurdles at age 11 in AAU. That’s a huge help. There are a lot of opportunities for them.”
After the regular season is completed, athletes can compete in a district-qualifying meet at Millersville and a regional qualifier meet in Coatesville for the opportunity to earn a trip to the national event. The AAU Junior Olympics will take place Monday, July 28, through Saturday, Aug. 2, in Humble, Texas, a suburb of Houston.
In its first two years, the Tracksters sent several performers to the Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa, and Greensboro, N.C.

someplace new,” Mason said. Solanco fifth-grader Kennedy Burrell and eighth-grader Jose Dominguez have enjoyed their experiences with the Tracksters and plan to compete again this summer.
“I like throwing, and I like my coaches,” said Kennedy, who participates in the discus and shot put. “All the coaches really help, and everyone encourages me. It’s a good environment.”
Jose is currently competing in the shot put and discus on Solanco’s junior high team and will be able to throw the javelin with the Tracksters this summer.
“Everyone supports each other,” Jose said. “It’s an extra time to practice and compete.”

“Ultimately, as these kids get more advanced in AAU, there’s an opportunity for them to go to the national level, and scholarships are available,” said Tracksters’ assistant coach Joe Rineer.

chance to compete in the state competition. “It was awesome,” she said. “It was like, ‘Oh my gosh. I finally made it.’ It was very eye-opening to get that experience to be up there with so many great singers and get to sing alongside them.”
David added, “All other festivals have a level of stress to them because you’re worried about making it to the next level. This was just a celebration of your achievement. You could fully immerse yourself in the joy of making music. It was wonderful.”
Ciemiewicz said she was impressed by the guest director Dilworth, who introduced the students to different cultures by having them perform a fast Puerto Rico folk song
and a song in Chinese. “He was awesome,” Ava said. “He had so much insight and really dove into the technical part of music, which was a really good experience to have. He was a great teacher, and I learned a lot from him.”
Seven Penn Manor students competed in the Region V Chorus Festival, which was held March 20 to 21 at Northeast Middle School in Bethlehem. Region V is made up of students from District VII, which consists of eight counties including Lancaster, and District X.
Jordan ranked among the top two for the entire state, qualifying him as all-state chorus accompanist. Matthew and David each

The seven students had advanced by virtue of their performance in the District VII Chorus Festival at Central York High School on Feb. 7 and 8.
The region festival qualifiers are part of the Audition Choir Manor Singers, a group that meets every other school day.
“We prepare more difficult pieces that really challenge us,” David said.
“It’s nice to come in every morning and be able to work on something really beautiful. Mrs. C is incredibly detail-oriented and never lets us settle. That level of commitment enables us to succeed in these competition events.”
Bailey added, “It’s definitely with a lot of Mrs. C’s help. She has led us all to be better as musicians.”
Ciemiewicz said the students deserve all the acclaim. “I feel like a proud mom,” she said. “I really, truly try to make it all about the kids. I

hope they feel that sense of pride and they realize how great of an achievement that is. The bulk of the work at this level is done on their own. There’s not time for us to do it in class. They just rise to the occasion. This specific group has been phenomenal. ... Their work ethic, the dedication they show to one small program - they’re truly a special bunch.”
Ava added to her teacher’s comments. “As much as Mrs. C is very, very humble in saying that it’s all
us, we wouldn’t be here without the music program we have (at Penn Manor),” Ava said. “That music program wouldn’t be the way that it is if it wasn’t for Mrs. C and the way she pushes us all to be our best and picks music that challenges us. She inspires us in a love of music and not only pushes us to do well with this because it’s good to do well, but genuinely has a love for music and experience different kinds of music. She’s the reason we’re all here.”

The fee will include premier farm-to-table fare by Commonwealth Kitchen, development chair Joy Olcott said. The Millersville Woman’s Club, a Loft partner, will donate desserts. There will be chances to win prizes. People who have benefited from Loft services will share their stories, and visitors will receive a tour of the building.
An online auction will be held the weekend of the fundraiser, starting after the party ends at 1 p.m. on May 17 and running through Sunday, May 18. There will be a link to the auction on the LCP website.
The Garden Luncheon Fundraiser will benefit the Loft’s food pantry, executive director Jenna Graeff said.
It will also serve as the unofficial kickoff for Loft’s capital campaign. On March 19, in partnership with the Millersville Borough Council and planning commission, LCP purchased the building on East Charlotte Street for $800,000 from the Lancaster Emergency Medical Services (LEMSA).
An additional $1.2 million is needed for equipment and renovations to the building. “We are launching our Growing Together capital campaign to support reno -
vations to turn the building into a community resource facility,” Graeff said.
To donate to the capital campaign, email Olcott at joy@loftcp.org.
LCP is planning to move into the building in the first quarter of 2026. “That will be impactful because it will allow us to continue to develop our programs and services,” Graeff said. “It will allow us to grow roots in Millersville and stay in one spot based on what church missions want to do and not do.”
Olcott added, “It will also give stability for our neighbors who come to the food pantry and the clothing bank.”

Founded years earlier, Loft Community Partnership became a 501(c)(3) charitable organization in 2020, starting in a choir loft in Millersville Brethren in Christ Church before moving to St. Paul Lutheran Church. In September 2024, LCP moved into its current location, Jefferson Hall, 164 W. Cottage Ave., a building it leases from Millersville University.
LCP has grown exponentially over the last several years. PreCOVID, the group served 30 families a week. That number has risen to 400 families. “When we were at 120, we thought, ‘Oh my, how are we ever going to be able to sustain this?’” Olcott said.
Loft Community Partnership’s food pantry is open from 2 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Its clothing bank has more flexible hours, and the furniture bank at West Willow United Methodist Church is open by appointment.

Church posts concert, storytelling event
As part of the Church of the Apostles’ 50th anniversary celebrations, the church will host a performance by the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble (PHE) on Saturday, May 3, at 4 p.m. at the church, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. This community ensemble is composed of auditioned, advancedlevel handbell ringers from the greater Philadelphia area.

PHE’s repertoire includes original compositions, classical transcriptions, and other music in diverse genres, showcasing the performers’ mastery of advanced ringing techniques that go beyond traditional handbell sounds. The ensemble also explores collaborations with players of other instruments and expands the use of handbells in the performing arts.
Through workshops, conferences, and community outreach, PHE promotes the art and education of handbell ringing.
The concert is free of charge, courtesy of the Apostles Academy of Arts and Science. A freewill offering will be received.
The Church of the Apostles has also planned a presentation by member, photographer, and author Bill Hager on Saturday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Hager will share two stories, “Evangeline: Guardian of the Muted Forest” and “Angel Island.”
The event is free of charge, courtesy of the Apostles Academy of Arts and Science. A freewill offering will be received.

cannot be the end-all,” said Olcott. “We do really well with the food. So that’s going to stay our major focus and the clothes and the furniture. We’ve brought that into family advocacy and family services, but these other partners are already doing things in the community. We can send people to them.”
Graeff added, “The only reason we can do what we do is the partnerships we already have and are continuing to develop.”
Olcott stated Loft Community Partnership’s mantra is, “Give what you want, take what you need … growing together.”
