Local Scout Oversees Millersville VFW Repair

Suzie Papavasilion, a member of Scout Troop 88, chose to coordinate the repair of the Millersville VFW’s banquet hall for her Eagle Scout project.

In the first stage of her project, Suzie recruited fellow Scouts and scheduled dates to work on the banquet hall. She also worked with the VFW to recruit volunteers, including VFW members, officers, and staff, as well as members of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club.

The second stage of the project involved preparation for painting the banquet hall, which included washing walls, taking down TVs, and removing speakers.

The final stage of the renovation was the painting of the walls. The main renovation day was March 28, and Suzie oversaw the project, delegating tasks and ensuring everything was done properly and in the right order.

Suzie chose the Millersville VFW renovation as her Eagle Scout project because of the VFW’s generosity to Troop 88. She wanted to help the VFW continue its vital work in the community.

Suzie noted that the most important part of the project’s success was making sure she got the word out about the project and received help from others.

Tools, Trades and a Place to Get Started

Like many creative people, Emily Fritz comes from a crafty family. Her grandfather was a woodworker, but he died before she could learn from him. Eager to explore the craft, she wasn’t sure where to begin, and that experience inspired her to help others find

their starting point. She is the founder and executive director of Lancaster Workshop + Tool Library, opening later this year.

“Finding mentorship, tools, space, etc., was a serious lifelong limitation until I shared this story with my friend, mentor and now co-founder, Gene Shaw, a retired cabinetmaker

Employment is not just about a paycheck. Jobs can affect our self-worth, our relationships and our confidence.

Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit (IU) 13 is in the education business, and at least two of its programs are specifically designed to prepare young people for the workforce.

“For these students, work is

and artist in the city of Lancaster who invited me to learn with him,” she recalled. “By lesson three, I told Gene we must start a community workshop to give our community an opportunity to learn skilled trades in a mentorship, cohort environment, from seasoned experts.”

She connected with SCORE, wrote a business plan, created a budget and pitched her idea to the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. The Trust agreed to serve as fiscal sponsor, supporting the workshop and tool library under the Trust’s 501(c)(3) status.

“It’s really thanks to them and their belief in our mission along with the Steinman STEM Alliance for giving us the gift of startup funding to get off the ground,” Fritz said.

In August 2025, Shaw began setting up space in a warehouse located at 433 Ice Ave., Lancaster.

scenes business stuff, but none of this would be possible without him, his expertise, his connections, his time and willingness to take me on as a mentor and go on this wild ride,” Fritz explained.

The organization is in the process of promoting and recruiting Founding Members for a soft opening in March, and a grand opening is scheduled for the workshop and library at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 14. The space will initially be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Community hours will also be available in the future.

During a recent tour of the space, tool library coordinator Aidan Fife explained how the site will operate.

at home, but maybe they don’t have the money or want to buy a tool they’ll use once,” Fife said. “Or they don’t have the space to store the tool if they did buy it.”

anyone who is interested in learning more about skilled trades or borrowing a piece of equipment they need for a project.

The organizers’ vision is to provide a place that’s half workshop space for hands-on learning, half lending library for tools. They also want to bring DIY projects and skilled trades to women and other underrepresented groups and hope the Lancaster Workshop + Tool Library will create an intergenerational, intersectional space that reflects and uplifts the diversity of Lancaster.

Fritz noted that the organization owes everything to Shaw’s support. Well known in the woodworking, art, historic preservation and architecture industries, he has been instrumental in finding materials and tool donations, as well as recruiting instructors.

“I did the behind-the-

“On one side, we’ll have a workshop space, where we will offer classes and open workshop hours, so if people have a project they’d like to work on, they can do that here,” he said. “They can use our bigger tools, like our table saw, miter saw and band saw.”

The organization will require safety classes to prepare people to use the bigger tools.

The library side of the building houses a wide variety of tools that members can check out, much like they’d do with books in a traditional library. Shelves are packed with hundreds of items, including circular saws, screwdrivers, drills, sanders, air compressors and more. People can borrow gardening tools, such as rakes, shovels or a wheelbarrow.

“The general premise of the tool library is we want it to be accessible to people who want to fix something

To prepare for opening the tool library, Shaw, Fritz, Fife and their team visited similar sites in the region, including the West Philly Tool Library and the Station North Tool Library in Baltimore.

They were inspired by the size and scope of both places, and they envision Lancaster’s library-ofthings expanding over time.

They hope to continue to build the inventory through donations of items, and they plan to offer classes for people to learn new skills. Current classes include programs on stained glass, a seed exchange and a masonry class.

“The sky’s the limit on what we could offer here,” Fife said. “It’s really just finding the teachers who are skilled in the subject and interested in teaching.”

Like Shaw and Fritz, Fife hopes the space will welcome

“I see this as a community space,” he said. “People will be able to learn to do things they didn’t know how to do before. Sure, you can watch YouTube, but being in front of someone who has done this for 50 years, there’s no substitute for that.”

The Lancaster Workshop + Tool Library has a sliding scale membership. To learn more about the organization, visit www.lancaster workshop.com. To become a member, visit https:// lancworkshop.lend-engine -app.com.

especially important,” said Gina Guatta, who’s been the supervisor of IU13’s Lancaster secondary transition programs for 12 years. “For some, they’ve been told they can’t work. They feel proud when they make a contribution. Part of it is growing up, going to school, going to work and taking the next step.”

Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, which is located at 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, sponsors four work immersion programs and three school-to-work programs, all secondary transition programs created to teach specific work skills and soft skills and prepare students for life. The programs are designed for students with intellectual and learning disabilities.

“We do a lot of modeling,” said Guatta. “Work ethic is difficult to teach. But you can set expectations high and help (students) reach those expectations. For the most part, we’re getting them there.”

Both secondary transition programs require the entire school year to complete.

Participants in the work immersion programs spend part of their school days performing work assignments at business partners and the other part of their school days reviewing performances, correcting mistakes and learning curriculum in classroom settings. Among the participating businesses are Moravian Manor Communities in Lititz, Masonic Village retirement community in Elizabethtown, Willow Valley Communities in

Willow Valley, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center and Lancaster General Health in the city.

One of the missions of the school-to-work programs, which emphasize community-based training in real-world settings, is to prepare students for the work immersion programs. Some of the instruction performed in the introductory programs are performed at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster and at IU13’s Burle Business Park location.

“The work immersion programs are for students in their final years of school, and the goal is to get them employed,” said Guatta, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We want these students to increase their skills to attain and maintain employment. We want them to be competitively employed. We want them to build confidence and experience.”

Currently, there are more than 80 students with disabilities enrolled in IU13’s work immersion and school-to-work programs. The Lancaster secondary transition students are typically between 17 and 21 and reside in all 16 Lancaster County public school districts served by IU13.

Students are referred by their home school districts and then go through application and interview processes to gain entry into the programs.

“Some are students who fall through the cracks, and some are students who a typical high

school setting isn’t going to help,” said Guatta. “They want to work. They want to make their ways in life. We want them to be successful. They want to be successful. Sometimes it’s hard for students with special needs to fit in. Maybe they didn’t have a dream, but they move forward when they see they can do something.”

Depending upon individual circumstances, secondary transition students receive instruction and guidance from IU13 job trainers and mentors from participating business partners. Students learn time management, problem-solving skills, teambuilding, enhanced communications, goal setting, independence, social skills, résumé preparation and customer relation skills.

Success breeds success.

“I see (students) come to us as new interns and leave as graduates,” said Guatta. “I see how they’ve grown, and it’s internal growth. It’s a very different student than the one you’ve seen from the beginning. I feel fortunate that I get to be a part of their journeys.”

One of 29 intermediate units formed across the state in the 1970s, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 serves as a bridge between local

school districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Education and provides educational services, business services, technology support and professional development. Across all of its job training programs, IU13 works with over 700 business partners.

“We talk about work worth doing,” said Guatta. “This is work worth doing at its core. This is helping students become productive adults. We talk about trust and unity at IU13. We work together and build a team. I definitely see my programs as being at the core for what we do for society.”

Emergencies Services Provider Receives Donation

Blue Rock Fire Rescue recently announced that Slaymaker Rentals and Slaymaker Electric Motor & Supply Co. donated to Answering the Call: The Blue Rock Firehouse Project. The project is a $10 million capital campaign to build a modern, consolidated firehouse serving Manor Township, Millersville Borough, and the surrounding Lancaster County community.

The $25,000 contribution from the Slaymaker companies will help advance plans to construct a new firehouse on the western edge of the fire rescue company’s service area. The new facility will replace and consolidate aging stations, providing more than 100 volunteer firefighters with the space, equipment, and infrastructure needed to respond safely and efficiently to emergencies. The new facility is designed to enhance training, improve response times, and support long-term volunteer recruitment and retention, ensuring the district is prepared to meet growing demands for service.

Blue Rock Fire Rescue responds to more than 800 calls annually across 55 square miles of diverse terrain, including 6 miles

of the Susquehanna River. Volunteers answer calls at all hours, leaving their homes, jobs, and families to serve the community.

To support the fundraising campaign, visit https:// venmo.com/u/bluerockfire.

Slaymaker Rentals provides a wide range of rental equipment, including lifts, excavators, and backhoes.

Slaymaker Electric Motor & Supply Co. sells electric motors, drives, pumps, generators, converters, and parts - along with expert repair services, troubleshooting, and technical support – to agricultural, commercial, and industrial customers.

Church to Hold Arts Events

First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, has planned two performing arts events. A concert, “Organic Reflections: Celebrating American Composers,” will take place on Friday, May 1, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute program will feature organist Larry Hershey and trumpeter Doug Albert. The program will include Aaron Copland’s “At the River,” Joseph Brackett’s rendition of the Shaker song “Simple Gifts,” and Carmen Dragon’s arrangement of “America, the Beautiful.” Admission is free.

“Soul & Spirit” will take place on Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. This 90-minute

sacred arts experience will celebrate Black history, faith, resilience, justice, and hope through gospel music, jazz, and the spoken word. Originally scheduled in February to celebrate Black History Month, the event was postponed due to winter storms. The program will be hosted by Dominique Denman and will feature Kellie Turner and Alanna Piper. Admission is free, and a freewill offering will be received to help maintain First Reformed Church’s historic sacred space.
