Penn Manor High School teacher wins award

It was kismet.

Penn Manor High School language arts teacher Courtney Harting was instructing her firstblock class on March 11 when a group of visitors entered her classroom.

“We were in the middle of an analysis of Act 5, Scene 1 of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and during a deep text analysis of Romeo’s characterization,” Harting said. “In walked our team of administrators - Mr. (Thomas) Bechtel, Mrs. (Jenna) Fisher, Mr. (Chris) Telesco - and a few of my former students. Then the representatives from Citadel came in.”

In the second line of Act 5, Scene 1, Romeo says, “My dreams presage some joyful news at hand.”

Joyful news was, in fact, at hand.

The guests had come to Harting’s room to inform her she had won a Citadel Heart of Learning Award, which is sponsored by Citadel Credit Union. Harting is one of three teachers from Lancaster County to earn the honor, which recognizes exceptional teachers who inspire their students and make a significant impact on their communities.

Until she was presented with the award, Harting had no idea she had even been nominated. “It was humbling, I guess, but also took me by complete surprise,” said Harting. “It was a moment of shock and excitement. I think the coolest part of it was watching my students’ faces when they were watching me receive the award. They were proud, which was really cool.”

She unassumingly downplayed her accomplishment. “Part of my feelings in receiving the award is

I am just here doing my job as I’m supposed to be doing,” said Harting, who also helps coordinate Link Crew, a mentorship program that connects upperclassmen with incoming freshmen. “There are a lot of other educators in our district, especially, who I think deserve just as much if not more.

I don’t know that I do anything particularly unique.”

Cajoled into offering a summarization of what makes her successful, Harting said, “I care very deeply about each and every minute of what goes on in my classroom. I lesson plan tirelessly. Building relationships with my students is my No. 1 priority. That takes precedence over everything. … I think that drives my practice and allows me to (motivate) students and allows them to be receptive of it.”

Harting credits school officials with fostering an environment that allows teachers to excel.

“Our administrative team really trusts its teachers and believes in us,” she said. “They definitely provide opportunity for us to be the experts of the instruction. They trust that we have our students’ best interests at heart at all times. That’s huge in developing that culture where teachers feel free to take risks academically and sustain a sense of passion for teaching.”

Harting was nominated for the Citadel award by colleague Pamela Lindstrom. “Courtney’s extraordinary love for her students has guided her to create a nurturing and supportive atmosphere, where students are genuinely seen and cared for as learners and as people,” Lindstrom wrote

The Conestoga Area Historical Society, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga, will hold its annual Spring Fling on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be an Easter egg hunt for kids ages 2 to 8 starting

at 10 a.m., and the Easter Bunny will be on hand to oversee the proceedings. An artist will provide free face painting.

Spinners, wheelers, and blacksmiths will demonstrate their crafts, and visitors can take self-guided tours, with docents available to answer questions.

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”

The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

The event will feature free entry and free parking.

Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.

“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared. “Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”

“All of these events are free, but donations are greatly appreciated,” Conestoga Area Historical Society vice president Jim Kauffman said.

Craft vendors will sell their wares, and there will also be food trucks.

“What we’re trying to do is attract new people to come to the museum,” Kauffman said. “We want to get the word out about who we are and show people what we have. We want people to be interested, and we are

always looking for volunteers.”

The Spring Fling serves as opening day for the museum, which will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. through Sunday, Dec. 14. Volunteers are present to guide visitors around the premises.

Kauffman noted that there are 250 members of the organization, which offers life memberships, annual memberships, and family memberships. Members receive a quarterly newsletter.

The Conestoga Area Historical Society curates artifacts from bygone days in Millersville Borough, Manor Township, Pequea Township, Martic Township, and Conestoga Township. “We’re preserving the history of the Penn Manor School District,” Kauffman said. “That’s what we do.”

There are several buildings of historical significance on the museum’s grounds, according to the organization’s website, www.pennmanorhistory.org.

The main building houses an exhibit area on the ground floor and a museum on the first floor, as well as a meeting room, a library, and four craftsman’s shops.

The Steven Atkinson Log Cabin, built in 1753, was originally located in the Sunnyside district of Lancaster on the Conestoga River. The house is decorated and furnished with period reproductions by local craftsmen.

The Tobias Stehman Blacksmith Shop, constructed in 1880, was originally located on the Stehman farm in Pequea Township. It is a fully equipped, working blacksmith shop.

The Michael Harnish Stone House, built in 1740, was originally located along Main Street in Conestoga. It contains a display of Harnish family photos, documents, deeds, and a family Bible.

The Elmer Hoak Broom Shop is a toll booth from the Slackwater area of Manor Township.

The Stella V. Caldwell Research Center contains books, photographs, and diaries. It may be used by members and nonmembers.

The Sweitzer Bank Barn contains agricultural items and two Conestoga wagons.

Susquehannock, Seneca, Delaware, Shawnee, and Conoy Indians inhabited the area.

Kauffman said immigrants from a variety of countries had jobs at ironworks in Safe Harbor, Colemanville, and Martic Forge. “There is so much history in this area,” Kauffman said.

The Conestoga Area Historical Society is also home to the Zercher Diaries. In 1889, Andrew Zercher, who was a local cabinetmaker in Conestoga, went into the undertaking business. As a cabinetmaker, he could make his own caskets. Zercher kept a daily diary from 1889 until 1918. He gave these diaries to a friend and had him promise that he would destroy them when he passed away. Kauffman said the diaries got into the hands of a man in Conestoga who donated the diaries to the CAHS museum. Museum members transcribed the diaries, and those transcriptions are on the historical society website.

The Conestoga Area Historical Society also holds a Fall Festival and an Early American Candlelight Christmas. For more information about the Spring Fling and Conestoga Area Historical Society, email Conestogaarea95@gmail.com or call 717-872-1699.

in her nomination. “Courtney takes the time to listen to her students’ concerns, celebrate their successes, and guide them through the challenges they face. Her tenacious love for her students creates bonds that extend far beyond the classroom walls.”

Harting received $1,000 for her classroom and a glass Citadel Heart of Learning paperweight.

“I want to make sure I use (the money) to replenish my classroom, so that all my students have accessibility to learning, whether that be a pencil or purchasing a few extra laptop chargers, those little things,” Harting noted.

Although not a graduate of Penn Manor High School, Harting has always been a Comet at heart. She attended Penn Manor schools from kindergarten until halfway through her senior year before graduating from Wilson High School in West Lawn.

The morning Harting was presented with the award was not the first time destiny intervened. Now in her 12th year as a teacher, Harting spent the first five years of her career in Florida. Parting from Pennsylvania was such sweet sorrow. Homesick, she began researching job openings in the area. There was one school district in a 100-mile radius of Lancaster County that needed a high school English teacher: Penn Manor.

“I felt like the stars were aligning,” she said.

“I thought, ‘Let’s make it happen. Let’s go home.’”

Travel Fair

participated in the fair since its inception in 2018, while others are new this year.

“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”

Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.

The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.

The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.

Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.

At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.

“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”

Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastries - will also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.

“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”

According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.

“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”

And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.

Travel Fair

from pg 6

Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.

“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”

Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.

“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”

Meals on Wheels sets breakfast
