In 2006, Laura Howell turned her dream of teaching Shakespeare full time into a reality. Prior to this, Howell was working as a theater teacher at Lancaster County Day School, where she taught Shakespeare to high school students. It was at this time that she noticed how excited students were about Shakespeare and how the language and the plays themselves empowered the students. See Camp WIll pg 11

Since this past year has been isolating and lonely for many people, teachers and students at Central Manor Elementary School wanted to reach out to the community. In February, Central Manor firstgrade teacher Karen Devenburgh asked Central Manor fourth-grade teacher Heather Piatt if her students would like to make Valentine’s Day cards for residents nearby. “The kids really took to it, and it meant a lot to them that they were helping people out in the community,” Piatt said.

LMS’ 25th annual golf tournament will be held at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster, on Wednesday, May 12. Registration and breakfast for the morning round will start at 7 a.m., and the round will conclude with lunch and prizes at noon. The afternoon round will begin with a light lunch at noon and end with dinner and prizes at 6 p.m. Golfers will have the opportunity to purchase mulligans and enter putting and chipping competitions. There will also be a prize for any player who obtains a hole in one at a designated hole. Team, individual skill, and door prizes will be awarded after each round. Team prizes will be awarded for men’s, women’s, mixed, and seniors’ teams. A mixed team is defined as a group of four with at least two women. A senior team must have three golfers who are age 65 or older. COVID safety precautions will include mask wearing, social distancing, temperature checks, and meeting health screening requirements.
PCA&D made it a mission to ensure that everyone would have access to the program. On Friday, June 4, there will be an outdoor exhibition displaying the work of students involved with the Healing Arts program. “In many ways, the exhibition will pay tribute to a wide perspective of diverse individuals so that anyone living and working in Lancaster County can connect to this program,” explained Snovel. Students now have access to someone working in the field who can mentor them and help build their portfolios. As for the community, the Healing Arts program is another way for PCA&D to get involved with a variety of organizations in Lancaster County. When the program was in the works, the COVID-19 pandemic was not on the college’s radar. “This program took off at a time when the entire world was figuring out how to think about what they experienced and the resilience they demonstrated during the pandemic, and a program like this helps them answer these questions,” noted Snovel.

Four years ago, Richard Price; his sons, Jacob and Jordan; and their families established the Cynthia E. Price Scholarship for the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D). The scholarship was created to honor Richard’s late wife, artist and craftswoman Cynthia, and to financially assist students determined to improve the world around them through their artwork. The Cynthia E. Price Scholarship served as a catalyst for PCA&D to figure out how a program in the healing arts could bring the community together. The president of PCA&D, Michael Molla, created a new strategic plan concentrating on external relationships that would enable PCA&D to work in conjunction with organizations and institutions around Lancaster County. PCA&D applied for and was awarded a Passion Grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation. “This grant gave us the ability to host an artist in
residence and form an advisory committee beyond PCA&D to oversee the Healing Arts program,” explained Todd Snovel, special assistant to the president and director of strategic initiatives and development at PCA&D. The college did not have to look far for an artist to fill the residency. PCA&D was preparing to distribute a press release when Jennifer Quigley made a cold call to the college. “We scheduled an interview with her to hear about her background, vision, and passion for the healing arts, and from that, it was clear we found our artist in residence,” said Snovel. Quigley’s expertise is not simply art therapy, but expressive arts therapy. It’s a process that incorporates numerous creative approaches such as music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, play therapy, and more, which are blended to fit the needs of the client. The Healing Arts program launched in January at PCA&D. “We’ve received a great response from the Advisory Committee,”

Arch Street Center will hold its annual Fishbowl Fundraiser virtually on Sunday, May 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. via YouTube and Facebook. The livestreamed event will include musical entertainment, giveaway drawings and a program. Two hundred items will be given away in the drawings. Additionally, takeout meals will be available for participants to enjoy at their home or venue during the event. Frey is the founder and owner of Brigid’s Way, an organization in East Petersburg that offers opportunities for people to connect with nature. According to Frey, her goal in life is to support others in living the lives that their hearts desire. After moving to Washington Boro three years ago, she created Heart Springs Sanctuary, a 4.5-acre property with three ponds where Frey learns and conducts research for Brigid’s Way. “My experience creating Heart Springs Sanctuary in Penn Manor has been incredible,” added Frey. “The land was mostly mown lawn when we moved here.” Within a couple years, Frey and her partner, Marcus Sheffer, have increased the biodiversity of plants by creating gardens and allowing areas to go wild. This shift has led to a greater animal diversity, especially a large increase in the bird population.

Now that spring has sprung and Earth Day approaches, people have been thinking about nature. For Lancaster County native Jen Frey, however, it has been on her mind her entire life. Frey grew up visiting her grandparents in East Petersburg. Her grandfather served as a Methodist minister and was passionate about organic gardening. He grew most of their food and maintained a greenhouse on their property. “My grandparents taught me that the best medicine comes from the garden, especially parsley!” said Frey. “My pop-pop, however, encouraged me to look closely and explore nature.” At a young age, Frey began studying natural healing, which expanded to flower essences and homeopathy when she was in junior
high. The more Frey continued on this path, the more she began to believe that humans need to heal their relationship with nature. “Our health is intricately connected with the health of the planet,” explained Frey. “We cannot remain healthy if we poison our Earth.” As plants return and flowers bloom, Frey watches them emerge and is astounded by the different species. “When I take the time to observe nature, I can’t help but feel grateful to be able to experience this incredible world,” said Frey. Over the course of her life, Frey has resided in Mount Joy, East Petersburg, and Washington Boro. Along the way, she has survived quicksand and hypothermia in the Amazon rainforest, has kayaked with glowing bioluminescent plankton, and was nearly blown out to sea in Iceland.

Artists of all ages and levels of experience are invited to enter their Lancaster County inspired artwork in the Lancaster County Art Quilt Project at Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg. This art exhibit, contest, and fundraiser is open to professional and hobby artists age 6 and up. Prizes will be awarded in children, teen, and adult divisions. The deadline to submit artwork is Sunday, April 25. The subject of the artwork should be a location in Lancaster County. Drawings, paintings, photography, textiles, mixed media artworks, or works in another medium can be submitted. Small 3-D works no larger than 10 inches by 8 inches will be accepted as well. Image size of any 2-D work should be 5 inches by 7 inches with a 1-inch border to allow for matting. Artists should submit work unmatted and unframed. LCAA will mat all work for uniformity and display the artwork in a quilt-like pattern in the galleries. Artists may donate as many pieces as they wish. There is no fee for entering. Cash prizes will be awarded. Members of the public will vote for their favorite artwork for People’s Choice Awards. The Lancaster County Art Quilt Project will open on Saturday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and continue through Thursday, June 3. A reception and awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 2,

Joanna Spicer believes art can bring people together. “Community outreach and work is important to me,” said the textile artist. “Art is a therapeutic, friendly and fun way for me to connect with others.” Spicer will showcase her work in an exhibit titled “A Spice of Life” in the cottage at Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia. The exhibit will be held on Friday, April 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, April 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. Spicer’s exhibit will be a fundraiser for the cemetery, which relies on funding for a variety of reasons. “Nonprofit organizations such as the Mount Bethel Cemetery had to cancel all fundraising events (this past year) due to the pandemic,” said Claire Storm, a member of the cemetery board of directors. “Although most of the work to keep the cemetery in pristine condition is performed by volunteers, there are other expenses that are supported by fundraisers.” Money from the event will be raised by the sale of
Spicer’s artwork as well as by donations and will be used for groundskeeping and landscaping, among other projects. Spicer, who teaches art at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School in Columbia, has helped the cemetery committee with numerous fundraisers over the years, although this will be her first time exhibiting her own work at the cottage. “I’ll be showcasing a variety of weavings and fabric pieces and possibly some prints,” she said. In addition to working with the cemetery committee, Spicer has organized other art events for local individuals and organizations, and she works with the Lancaster Office of Aging and Lancaster Creative Factory as an online art instructor for senior classes. She also completed two murals in Columbia - one at Coffee and Cream café and one at Locust Street Park. Spicer said supporting the Mount Bethel Cemetery is important because the site has historic significance in the community. According to the nonprofit’s website, the

Exhibit from pg 5 cemetery dates to the 1720s and is the oldest burial ground in continuous use in the Columbia area. “Not only is the show a great opportunity for community outreach, but it’s also an opportunity to support a group that preserves the history of our town so that the younger generation will have an idea of the importance of these places,” Spicer stated. “It’s also a
great opportunity to come to a place that’s part of the local community and to spotlight the work that people do behind the scenes to keep things running at the cemetery.” All visitors to “A Spice of Life” are asked to wear a mask, and a limit of 10 people will be allowed to enter the cottage at one time. The Comets came into Saturday’s (April 10) non-league baseball game with a 0-5 record. They were looking for their first victory, hosting Central York but instead suffered another 2-0 loss.
“We could potentially be 3-3,” said head coach Streeter Stuart. “We just need to find a way to hit better. As a coach, I feel responsible for not finding way to get our kids to hit better.” In their six losses, three have been by two runs. Manor lost to Warwick 2-0 and to McCaskey 4-2. Neumann were brainstorming ideas of organizations to help, they decided on The Loft. The Loft’s mission is to decrease poverty in the Penn Manor School District by providing food, clothing, toiletries, transportation, and other resources for families in need, including families of students at Central Manor. “The kids like the idea that they’re connected to the community in some way,” stated Piatt. “One boy even donated $20 of his own money.” Penn Manor social worker Joy Meley hosted a live Google Meet presentation from The Loft for all four fourth-grade classes to show students some of the services the nonprofit provides. By the end of March, the students had raised $376 for The Loft. Piatt said the fundraiser provided an opportunity to show students how their actions can affect other people in a positive way.

This project served as a catalyst for a fundraiser for The Loft Community Partnership. Central Manor principal Brian Malek explained that “March Gladness” was established four years ago to inspire students and staff during what is often a challenging time of the year. “We create a fun month of positive school culture events to promote happiness during a time when it can be difficult, with spring having not yet arrived,” Malek said. Piatt explained that when the fourth-graders were making their “March Gladness” calendars, she thought it would be a good idea to do a coin drive because they had done the same project in the past for other nonprofits. July 30 at 7:30 p.m. The People’s Shakespeare Project has executed three virtual plays, all of which can be seen on its YouTube channel. Streaming is free to viewers, but donations are welcome. There are some silver linings to Camp Will being virtual. Thanks to Zoom, different guest artists from all over the world will teach every day. “We have people tuning in from New Orleans, Massachusetts, and even Turkey!” exclaimed Howell. “Kids will have incredible educational and performative opportunities.” Howell believes that a lot of students, especially high-schoolers, have learned to be afraid of Shakespeare. “I feel that if they put themselves out there and experience Shakespeare the way it’s supposed to be - by living, breathing, speaking, and acting it - kids will latch onto Shakespeare and love it because there’s power in these

Luckily, Howell was in a position where she could open a theater dedicated to Shakespeare, so she founded The People’s Shakespeare Project. The theater group started as a college performance company and performed during the summer at Elizabethtown College. After a couple years went by, the group moved to Millersville University and staged plays outside during the summer. The People’s Shakespeare Project has two arms: an educational and a performative. Camp Will falls under the educational arm. Camp Will started in 2008 and was only for students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. After the students begged Howell to widen the age group, she gave in and set up two sections: one for middle-schoolers and another for high-schoolers. Due to the pandemic, The People’s Shakespeare Project was completely virtual last year. “We kept the theater going,” explained Howell. “We had a small group of high school students, and Zoom worked well, so we’re doing it again.” The People’s Shakespere Project will offer one session of Camp Will to rising eighth- through 12thgraders from Monday, July 12, to Friday, July 30. Given the likelihood that many students are tired of Zoom, Howell and her co-workers are redesigning Camp Will in ways that they think will make the camp more palatable online. Students will record an abridged version of “Twelfth Night” within three weeks, and it will stream on YouTube with every actor tuning in via Zoom on
