Tennis Teams Puts Together Two Straight Wins

After suffering five straight losses, the Comet tennis team edged Lebanon 3-2 on April 6 and followed with a solid 6-1 effort over Manheim Central.
PM’s No. 1 hitter, PJ Fahey blanked Lebanon’s Cohen and topped Central’s Ben Giner 6-0, 6-2.
Adding to the win over Lebanon was Rost and Ryan Duman with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5)/ 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles while Colin Kligge and Aydan Aliotta won 6-1, 6-0.
Fahey and Suren Clark opened with an 8-3 win at Central while Will Steltz and Rost won 8-2 and Kligge and Duman made it 3-0 with an 8-5 result at No. 3.
Clark added a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles while Rost blanked Owen Patten at No. 4.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
The Comets picked up its third straight win Saturday, April 9, with a 16-6 non-league result over visiting Daniel Boone. The hosts sprinted to a 9-1 lead in the first quarter but slowed after that, winning the next three frames by a slim 9-7 count.
Isaic Nafziger spearheaded Manor’s attack with eight goals while Colin Eby notched his first varsity hat trick and dished one assist. Erik Hinkle led the assist team with four, while scoring twice, and Adam Hollinger added three. Benedict Flinchbaugh also scored a pair.
SOFTBALL
The softball just keeps rolling. Friday’s (April 8) 5-1 win at Cedar Crest was Manor’s fifth straight. Julie Bowmaster finished with five strikeouts and one walk over six innings while Emily Riggs, the closer, struck out two and walked one in the seventh.
Reagan Soboleski led the sevenhit attack with a single and a double and Kaitlyn Ream added a two-run base hit in the second inning, pushing the lead to 3-0.
In crossover action April 11, the Comets improved to 6-0 overall with a 2-1 thriller over CV. Tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Bria Booth singled, and with two outs, Jordan Bailey matched Booth’s effort. Riggs walked to load the bases and Audrey Paterson’s infield grounder was thrown away, pushing in Booth with the game-winner.
The Comets finished with seven hits, two each from Booth (1RBI) and Soboleski.
Bowmaster fanned eight batters, walked two and gave up four hits. Riggs struck out the last batter of the sixth and retired the side in the seventh.
Patterson’s three run homer fueled a 15-0 shutout over Lebanon. Bowmaster tossed the one-hitter.
VOLLEYBALL
The volleyball team put up some competitive numbers Thursday, April 7 but fell short of victory in a 3-2 home loss against Cedar Crest. This one see-sawed back-and-forth with each team trading wins throughout. Crest won 25-21 and responded to a 29-19 second set loss to go up 2-1 with a 25-18 third set. Manor came back to tie with a 25-20 win only to fall behind 15-7 down the stretch.
“We had a lot of unforced errors, but Derek Warfel kept us in the game,” said head coach Brian Kemrer.
“Luke Thomas (9 blocks) was outstanding at the net,” he added.
Derek Warfel was also impressive, putting down 18 kills. Wyatt Rohrer put up 19 assists and served a game-high seven aces. Standing out on the defensive end was Max Bushong with 19 digs.
In a 3-1 win over McCaskey (25-11, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18) Warfel racked up 26 kills with 40 assists going to Rohrer. Bushong recorded 29 digs and Roman Keefer added five blocks.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
The Lady Comets exploded for a season-high 19 goals in a lopsided win at Daniel Boone April 9. The visitors racked up nine goals in the first half, poured in ten after the break and gave up just three.
Keegan Dings led the charge with nine goals and one assist. Erin Shipley (5g), Mia Jones (4g), Claire Eckroat (2g) and Maddie Weber (1g) added to the goal total while Grace Gerner added a pair of assists.
The scoring continued in Monday’s 14-10 victory over visiting Cedar Crest. Manor put up 11 first half goals, enough to overcome the Falcons’ 5-3 second half advantage.
Brooklynn Ayala needed just three saves to preserve Manor’s third win of the season. Dings and Shipley continue to anchor the offense, combining for 11 goals. Weber (2g, 1a) and Jones (1g) rounded out the offense.
BASEBALL
The baseball team fell to 3-3 overall after a 2-1 crossover loss to CV Monday, April 11. Tied at 1-1, CV took advantage of a two out error to plate the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh. An ironic ending considering Manor knotted the score in the top of the seventh. Bryce Avery singled, stole second and third and scored on an error by the catcher.
Both teams finished with four hits with Ethan Adelman going 2-for-3 for the Comets, but the CV pitchers were credited with 10 strikeouts. Grant Fry struck out six and scattered three hits over five innings, Avery closed with one strikeout and one walk.
The Comets were coming off an 8-hit, 7-1 victory over Cedar Crest Friday, April 8. They used a four run second inning to gain momentum. Isaac Braegelmann, Hunter Sipel (3 RBI) and Adelman each collected two hits with Sipel connecting for a triple in the first and a two run double in the second.
Noah Beach went the distance on the hill, scattering three hits in a five strikeout, two walk outing.
Wednesday’s 4-run third inning highlighted an 8-2 win over Lebanon and pushed the Comets to 4-3 overall.
TRACK
In Neffsville last Monday, the Comet teams went up against a stronger, deeper Manheim Township squad and came home with similar results. The boys won five events and lost 90-60 while the girls, with six wins, fell short 98-52.
Both teams found their strength in the field. Wyatt Kauffman, Jael Cruz, and Ty Keller swept the discus, Dhamir Wesley won the javelin and Jaryd Kleinhaus, and Evan Jurgenson went 1-2 in the shot.
For the girls, Kelsey Buswell and Elise Green went 1-2 in the discus and Gertrude Moenga won the shot with Buswell taking third. In the jumps, Kate Harnish (long) and Maddie Whited (triple) and Camryn Thorne (pole vault) were all winners with Corinne Smith taking second in the pole vault.
The boys’ got a pair of seconds from Jason Andro in the long and high.
On the track, both teams captured one relay win and Noah Bolin took the 100.
The team was coming off a solid effort at the Black Knight Invitational. Kleinhaus, with a 51-4.5 PR in the shot, and Leonid Medvedkin, who cleared 12-0 in the pole vault, were both winners.

“All the proceeds (from the barbecue) support long-term solutions for Haitians,” stated Betty Metzler Estime, who founded HHH with her husband, Elage. “The money all goes directly to providing jobs for Haitians and changing their lives. A dollar goes a certain way here, but in Haiti it goes a long way.”
HHH aims to relieve poverty in Haiti while meeting the physical, developmental, and spiritual needs of Haitians through projects, programs and ministries. Elage grew up in the Haitian communities of Montrouis and Charrier. He was raised in a Christian family of nine children, who were still young when their father died. Elage’s mother encountered many obstacles while trying to provide for her children. As a result, she was unable to pay schooling fees. Through a sponsorship, Elage attended Mission Possible School, where he became involved with outreach efforts by using his small allowance to purchase bananas and bread for neighborhood children. After attending Youth With A Mission, Elage focused on serving in Haiti. Betty, a Lancaster County native, met Elage in 2010 when she was part of a medical mission team. They married in 2012.
“Although our organization is called ‘Haitians Helping Haitians,’ I love helping everybody,” Elage said.
According to Betty, Elage will never forget where he came from and will continue to give back the same way he received. Elage’s ministry has grown and has become multifaceted. Initially, the Estimes self-funded the ministry, but a board of directors was formed to assist them and broaden the support. HHH provides food support for local schools, orphanages, and prisons and runs a feeding program for children. The organization offers English and music classes taught by local teachers. HHH holds yearly seminars for pastors, and, in the past, it helped a local church acquire land and construct a building.
Betty noted that HHH is beginning to plan phase two of building a community center to teach technical skills that may improve job opportunities to local Haitians. During the summers, HHH hosts camps for children. Additionally, the organization brings North American medical teams to conduct clinics.
