Band Boosters Prepare For Book, Bake Sale By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Rather than practicing scales and arpeggios, members of the Penn Manor Marching Unit and their parents sorted approximately 4,000 books on a recent Wednesday night. The group aimed to categorize the volumes donated to the marching unit’s booster group so that shoppers at the annual book sale on Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, will easily find titles of interest to them. “ We try to make it easy for customers to browse,” said Chris Reitnauer, who is the incoming chair of the Penn Manor Marching Unit Boosters. She noted that the books are sorted by genre and age level, adding, “We have thousands of kids’ books.” This year, the sale will also include educational toys, puzzles, and games.
“All the tables in the cafeteria (will be) full,” commented boosters vice president Mark Reitnauer. Chris noted that the book sale is a popular destination for resellers as well as teachers, homeschoolers, and families. “Teachers like that they can build their classroom libraries inexpensively, and families come to stock their home libraries or Little Free Libraries as well. Other people buy books for art project fodder,” Chris said. “People say books are dying, but there’s still that feeling of holding a book in your hand that you can’t beat. Plus, the earlier you expose children to books, the more likely they’ll develop a love of reading.” This year’s book sale will also offer baked goods as a way to expand the event. “We raise this money to help the kids for their upcoming seasons,” Mark said.
