Stephanie Horst said to understand what the third annual Pete Ruggieri Memorial 0.0 Un-Run is about, you must first know a little about Ruggieri.
Ruggieri, who passed away in March 2023, was a charitable, larger-than-life personality who insisted that everyone around him was having a good time, Horst said.
Fun and philanthropy are the focus of the Un-Run, which will be held Saturday, April 26, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville.
Doors will open at 2 p.m., and the “race” will start at 3 p.m., followed by a meal at 3:05 p.m.
To purchase tickets, go to www.eventbrite.com and type “Pete Ruggieri” in the search bar with “Millersville, PA” listed as the location. Attendees must be 21 years old or over, unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
The registration fee includes entry to the event, a barbecue meal, a numbered race bib, a “0.0” sticker, a chance to win door prizes, yard games, table games, and “general frivolity,” said Horst.
The Fat Is Where It’s At Barbeque, an award-winning competitive barbecue team, will provide the buffet meal, which will include pulled pork, pulled
chicken, macaroni and cheese, smoked beans, and coleslaw.
Participants are asked to come dressed in their most outrageous activewear; a prize will be awarded to the best-dressed runner.
The Un-Run will have a DJ for the first time, with DJ Neidermeyer spinning tunes.
Ruggieri had discussed plans for the Un-Run before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and his health declined. “I just thought it was such a great idea, we had to make it happen,” Horst said.
The runners will stand behind a long tape like the kind commonly found at the finish line of marathons. Then Horst will use a megaphone to announce, “Are you ready to not run? On your mark, get set ...” and then blow a whistle. Everyone will take one step forward to break through the tape. That will be the end of the “run” and the beginning of

Homefields Care Farm, 150 Letort Road, Millersville, will hold its annual Open Farm event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27.
“It’s the one day we open our farm and our grounds to the community and welcome anyone in the community to come and see what we do, learn about our mission, learn about opportunities to volunteer, and learn about the CSA (community-supported agriculture) that we do,” said Dominique Didier, vice president of Homefields’ board of directors and the chairperson of events. “We make it a fun day.”
Program coordinator Andrew Phillips and farm manager Tony Beers will lead tours of the certified organic farm at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.
“We take you around the farm, explain what our farming practices are, how we treat the land, what types of crops we grow and how,” Phillips said. “You will get to see the full property and all the different projects we have going on.
Penn State Extension will offer “Home Food Preservation: Introduction to Preserving” from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 28, in the training room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.
Canning, freezing and drying are preservation methods that enable people to enjoy seasonal foods all year. While these home food preservation methods have existed for centuries, much has been learned in the last few years about the science behind these methods.
The workshop will provide participants with the fundamentals of home food preservation. Instructors will explain
the scientific reasoning behind today’s recommended methods for home food preservation while dispelling food preservation myths and unsafe practices of the past.
Attendees will learn the basics of using a pressure canner based on current USDA canning guidelines for canning low acid foods such as vegetables and meat; how a pressure canner works and canning safety tips; the basics of using a water bath or atmospheric steam canner for canning highacid foods such as fruits, tomatoes, pickles, salsa, jam, and jelly; the latest canning recommendations based on USDA canning guidelines, including acidifying tomatoes and the use of salt and sugar; best practices for ensuring quality frozen food, such as de-activation of enzymes through blanching; and best practices for drying foods safely and troubleshooting problems when drying foods.
There is a fee. For more information and to register by Monday, April 21, visit https://extension .psu.edu/introduction-to -preserving-workshop or call 877-345-0691.

BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support. The ministry, which serves bereaved parents and grandparents, holds a number of area support groups, but once a year a special breakfast is held to give participants from around Lancaster County and others in the surrounding area who have experienced the loss of a child a chance to meet in a supportive environment.
The 2025 BASIS Breakfast will be held at Yoder’s Restaurant & Buffet, 14
S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The buffet breakfast is free to attend. A freewill offering will be received near the end of the event. Those wishing to attend the breakfast must register by Monday, April 21, at www.hvmi.org/ upcoming-events/ basis-breakfast.
This year’s speaker will be Lynn Eib, whose talk is titled “The Truth About Grief.” Eib’s life as an award-winning reporter
was interrupted by a cancer diagnosis in 1990 when she was only 36 years old. Her experience with surgery and chemotherapy inspired her to follow God’s call to begin the Cancer Prayer Support Group in 1991. The purpose of the group, now believed to be the country’s oldest faith-based organization of its kind, was to help grievers experience the closeness of the Lord to the brokenhearted. In April of 1996, Eib became a patient advocate for her oncologist, ministering to his patients for nearly 10 years. Eib calls herself a “passionate encourager, but always a truth-teller.” Eib is also the author of several books. Her first book, “When God & Cancer Meet,” has been published in three languages and sold more than 100,000 copies. Eib lives near Philadelphia

Eib’s book “When God & Grief Meet: True Stories of Comfort & Courage,” published in 2021, was given to Dan Steinman, BASIS director, by a fellow church member following the 2024 breakfast. Steinman quickly recognized how the content reflected the BASIS support group material. “I prayed about it,” recalled Steinman, who noted that the woman who gave him the book recommended Eib as an “excellent speaker.” “I trusted her judgment,” shared Steinman, who scheduled Eib for this year’s banquet.
Each year, a Wall of Remembrance, which was originally a portable photo display featuring pictures of the children who have died, is available at the breakfast. Last year, the photos from the wall were shown on a screen, but this year Steinman hopes the wall will be available to attendees in a digital format.

BASIS also produces quarterly podcasts on a variety of grief-related topics, which can be found at www.hvmi.org/ hopeingrief.
Steinman pointed out that the purpose of the ministry is to be there for those experiencing loss of a loved one and that doing that in a variety of ways helps to spread comfort. “We just want to come beside people,” he said. “However we do that is good.”

“We give attendees plenty of time to converse (before and during breakfast),” said Steinman, who noted breakfast is served at 9:30 a.m. and enjoyed until 11 a.m. Eib will speak at 11, and after she speaks, attendees may ask questions.
Steinman noted that BASIS currently holds support groups within Lancaster County in Akron, Mount Joy, Paradise, and Quarryville. The ministry is considering expanding

If you have at least 40 years of wisdom behind you and ride a motorcycle (doesn’t matter what you ride), we would like to invite you to join us. We are the Eastern Pa. Chapter of the Retreads Motorcycle Club. An International Motorcycle Club with Chapters in the U.S., U.K., Canada and New Zealand. Our specific Chapter holds breakfasts monthly in Lancaster at the Golden Corral, in Myerstown, at the Country Fare Restaurant, in Quakertown at Quakertown Family Restaurant and in Kinzers at A&J’s Twisted Kitchen. After breakfast (weather permitting), we hold rides, usually with the destination being somewhere that serves ice cream. Aside from the breakfasts there is always something happening with the Retreads M/C, whether it be Rallies (International or State), weekend rides, weeklong excursions, meet for Dinner events, mini golf…. There is always something happening. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, and you like to ride, check us out on Facebook or our Web Site (www.easternparetreads.com). Or better yet come out and meet us in person at one of the breakfasts. With that said, even if you are not 40 years of age, you are still more than welcome to come out to our breakfasts and ride with us.

night,
Things you might not see day to day as a customer but are part of our daily operation and outreach efforts. It is beautiful in spring. Everything’s blooming. It’s a fun time to get to see the whole property and experience the place.”

Beers will take visitors behind the scenes. “Everybody enjoys our organic vegetables, but we will give a peek under the hood and show how the vegetables are made,” he said. “We will explain how greenhouses work.”
Beers will explain the tilling process and how the
equipment works. “People will get a sense of what farmers are doing to produce these wonderful vegetables that they’re eating every week,” he said. “It’s to build trust so people can see our farming practices and what it takes to have a clean farm.”
People will have the opportunity to explore the greenhouses, visit pickyour-own fields, and go home with a DIY project.
There will be a photo booth, a treasure hunt, crafts for families, and activities for kids. Families are welcome to hold a picnic. Koshary Station will be selling food, and Jimmy Juice will be on-site.
“The overarching goal is we want to welcome everyone to Homefields,” said Allison Hawthorne, president of the organization’s board of directors.
Hawthorne said the event “is not transactional,” but the CSA is how Homefields funds its purpose and mission.
Homefields is best known for its CSA, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Lettuce explain.
“We do a lot of things on this farm that people probably don’t realize,” Beers said. “We have high concentrations of extremely endangered plants that we’re propagating. We have high school kids with IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) who come every week and learn farming from us. We’ve got native plant flower gardens. There are opportunities for people to volunteer and be part of it. There are a lot of things that aren’t our CSA.”
The farm employs, houses, and provides opportunities to people with disabilities. Homefields’ workforce-training program gives high-schoolers served by IU13 the tools and experience they can use in greenhouses, nurseries, and farms.
The “home” in Homefields comes from the two houses on the property, which both have three people with disabilities living there. Homefields supports the licensed provider that supplies 24-hour staffing.
Cristian Phibbs is an employee who has an intellectual developmental difficulty and has become a valuable farmhand. “This is awesome. I came here
because this is a nice place,” said Phibbs. “Now I get to work and socialize with people, which I did not get to do in my old jobs. And I get paid for it.”
Homefields provides workers like Phibbs with an opportunity to work in a competitive environment while learning skills.
Among his many responsibilities are planting seeds, caring for the lawn, and picking fruits and vegetables. “I never understood this job before I came here.
Now I do,” Phibbs said.
“This is interesting to me. This job is better for me. I love it.”
There is another charitable component. After customers pick up their fruits and vegetables over weekends, the rest of the produce is given to Loft Community Partnership, which is in Millersville.
Beers became emotional
when detailing the food donations. “All of that food goes to the Loft, and they make sure it gets in the hands of people in our community who might be struggling,” he said. Phillips estimated the items donated by Homefields benefit 250 local families.
Volunteer Carol Welsh said, “When a group of people come together to support an organic farm, they get an opportunity to live out a mission that brings the community together. It’s unique. It doesn’t exist much anymore, so we’re proud to have everybody here.”
The Open Farm event is free, but registration is encouraged. To register, go to www.homefields.org/ open-farm-2025. For more information about Homefields Care Farm, call 717-572-2719 or email info@homefields.org.

The event’s activities will be based on Ruggieri’s recurring jokes. There will be a scrapple toss to represent one of his favorite foods. Ruggieri created a Facebook page devoted to scrapple, and a Photoshopped image of scrapple ice cream went viral. The gag got so popular that a small creamery in Harrisburg actually produced scrapple ice cream, and Ruggieri appeared on television news when the debatably delectable dessert debuted at Broad Street Market.
There will be a tabletop horse racing game and a contest to guess the number of bricks in the “Gap Lighthouse,” which is how Ruggieri referred to the Gap Town Clock. Proceeds from the Un-Run will benefit Jefferson Health in Ruggieri’s memory. The money will go into a fund managed by oncologist Marcia Brose and will support research and development of treatment options for thyroid cancer patients like Ruggieri.
Ruggieri, of Lancaster, was heavily involved in Masonic organizations and is perhaps best known as the founder of the Santa Stumble, which has raised more than $200,000 for various charities in its first 12 years. An animal lover, Ruggieri initially donated the proceeds to the Lancaster Police Foundation for the horses and dogs in the Lancaster Mounted Patrol and K-9 unit. Since the mounted patrol is now disbanded, the money goes to a variety of local charities.
The Santa Stumble is held in Lancaster city on the second Saturday of December. It started when Ruggieri and a few friends embarked on a bar crawl
dressed
Christmas-themed outfits and has grown exponentially, Horst said. “He was absolutely floored with how it took off,” said Horst. “Of course everyone had a blast, because that’s what happens when you go to an event Pete plans,” Horst said. Now, Horst, John Hockley, and Joe Gebhard plan the event, which is expected to draw approximately 2,000 participants this year.
Ruggieri also created a satirical Facebook account called People of Lancaster, where he provided humorous commentary about local news items. He established the 505 Happy Hour Club, which met every Wednesday.
“Pete was a natural leader and a big idea person,” Horst said. “Honoring Pete and having fun is one and the same. He personally would see to it that everybody who showed up had fun. Anytime we plan something in his memory, we have to make sure it’s fun, because that’s what he was all about.”

ASPIE, a nonprofit dedicated to creating supplemental income for adult artisans with disabilities, will hold its annual spring gallery show on Saturday, April 19, at a new venue: the Booth Ferris Room at the Steinman College Center on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. Steinman College Center is located off College Avenue. The show will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The event is made possible by cooperative work between ASPIE and the college’s Best Buddies chapter. Best Buddies is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
As ASPIE enters its second decade of operation in 2025, its member artisans generate income through donations for their original artwork via the online ASPIE Gallery at www.aspieartists.com and the more recently opened
in-person gallery at 1905 Barton Drive, Lancaster. Donors make it possible for artists with disabilities to show their work and grow more independent.
Artists who will be highlighted in the April 19 show include Jesse Buckwalter, a photographer from Lancaster; Jonathan Whitlock, a painter from Lancaster; Dorrin Gingrich, a painter from Macon, Ga.; JP Henry, a photographer from Earleville, Md.; Kate Manners, a pour painter from Lancaster; Steven Georges, a metal artist from Mount Joy; and Malcolm Corley, a painter from Lancaster.
Several of these artists will attend a portion of the gallery show. In addition, a musical presentation by the Harmonic Crooners will occur from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The Harmonic Crooners is an ensemble from the Adult Enrichment chorus led by Annette Whitlock, an ASPIE board member. Adult Enrichment is a day program for adults with disabilities operated by United Disabilities Services.
For more information, call Jerry Buckwalter at 207-412-8090.
Penn State Extension will offer a live webinar about the Pennsylvania Invasive “Replace-ive” Program on Monday, April 21, at noon.
The Pennsylvania Invasive “Replace-ive” Program
encourages homeowners to replace non-native trees and shrubs - such as Callery pear, tree of heaven, and burning bush - with native species. Webinar viewers will learn about the ecological and economic harm that invasive plants cause and how Pennsylvania property owners can receive up to five free native trees through this new initiative. Topics will include eligibility requirements for program participation, program location and dates, and how to participate.
The webinar is free of charge, but registration is required by visiting https://extension.psu.edu and searching for “Community Trees: Pennsylvania Invasive ‘Replace-ive’ Program.”
