Springing Into Nature BY COURTNEY MENGEL
ow that spring has sprung and Earth Day approaches, people have been thinking about nature. For Lancaster County native Jen Frey, however, it has been on her mind her entire life.
“When I take the time to observe nature, I can’t help but feel grateful to be able to experience this incredible world,” said Frey. Frey grew up visiting her grandparents in East Petersburg. Her grandfather served as a Methodist minister and was passionate about organic gardening. He grew most of their food and maintained a greenhouse on their property. “My grandparents taught me that the best medicine comes from the garden, especially parsley!” said Frey. “My pop-pop, however, encouraged me to look closely and explore nature.”
East Petersburg that offers opportunities for people to connect with nature. According to Frey, her goal in life is to support others in living the lives that their hearts desire. After moving to Washington Boro three years ago, she created Heart Springs Sanctuary, a 4.5-acre property with three ponds where Frey learns and conducts research for Brigid’s Way. “My experience creating Heart Springs Sanctuary in Penn Manor has been incredible,” added Frey. “The land was mostly mown lawn when we moved here.” Within a couple years, Frey and her partner, Marcus Sheffer, have increased the biodiversity of plants by creating gardens and allowing areas to go wild. This shift has led to a greater animal diversity, especially a large increase in the bird population. “My partner and I love to watch the birds,” said Frey. “Last year we had baby wrens who hatched in between a window and the screen. Discovering The Healing Arts At PCA&D BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Four years ago, Richard Price; his sons, Jacob and Jordan; and their families established the Cynthia E. Price Scholarship for the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D). The scholarship was created to honor Richard’s late wife, artist and craftswoman Cynthia, and to financially assist students determined to improve the world around them through their artwork. The Cynthia E. Price Scholarship served as a catalyst for PCA&D to figure out how a program in the healing arts could bring the community together.

At a young age, Frey began studying natural healing, which expanded to flower essences and homeopathy when she was in junior high. The more Frey continued on this path, the more she began to believe that humans need to heal their relationship with nature. “Our health is intricately connected with the health of the planet,” explained Frey. “We cannot remain healthy if we poison our Earth.” As plants return and flowers bloom, Frey watches them emerge and is astounded by the different species. “When I take the time to observe nature, I can’t help but feel grateful to be able to experience this incredible world,” said Frey. Over the course of her life, Frey has resided in Mount Joy, East Petersburg, and Washington Boro. Along the way, she has survived quicksand and hypothermia in the Amazon rainforest, has kayaked with glowing bioluminescent plankton, and was nearly blown out to sea in Iceland. YWCA Lancaster will host its annual Race Against Racism with an interactive/educational twist, as this year’s event will offer a history lesson along with the race. The Race Your Way Race Against Racism will run from Saturday, April 24, through Saturday, May 22. “This is an opportunity to use our 5K course through Lancaster with an opportunity to learn about various historic sites or make your own race in your neighborhood, on your treadmill or any other way that works for you,” explained Stacie Blake, CEO of YWCA Lancaster.

This is the 23rd consecutive year for the race, making it the longest-running Race Against Racism in the country, she noted. As always, the race is a fundraiser for the YWCA’s programs. This year’s race supports the new Center for Racial and Gender Equity. “This is a division of YWCA that focuses on education, advocacy and community engagement in our quest to create an equitable community for all residents,” Blake stated. One option for this year’s race will be to utilize a self-guided course through Lancaster city with a curated Race Against Racism playlist featuring music and spoken word about historic stops along the route. “This year we wanted to make a stronger connection with our important mission of eliminating racism and empowering women,” Blake said. “Our first step was to work with the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania to identify six key sites of historical significance to African Americans in Lancaster. Our professional race coordinator used these points to map and measure a new 5K course.” Information will be recorded about the sites and will be interspersed with music to cre-

ate a Spotify playlist. “The playlist was culled from suggestions of our Social Justice Training Team, and you will find some moving, motivating and inspiring music on this mix,” she remarked. “We are excited about the new course, which still starts and ends at Musser Park, just around the corner from YWCA Lancaster.” A Kids Fun Run is also part of the event this year, and children age 12 and under are encouraged to participate in a 100-yard dash virtually. “This year we have a special gift for youth participants,” Blake said. “Zetta Elliott, an award-winning author recently published a children’s book set in Lancaster, ‘Roots Run Deep.’ It is illustrated by a Lancaster artist, Gracie Berry.” Every child who signs up will receive the book, which tells the story of the resilience and determination of Africans as they resist enslavement and fight for their rightful place as citizens of the United States. As for the community, the Healing Arts program is another way for PCA&D to get involved with a variety of organizations in Lancaster County. When the program was in the works, the COVID-19 pandemic was not on the college’s radar. “This program took off at a time when the entire world was figuring out how to think about what they experienced and the resilience they demonstrated during the pandemic, and a program like this helps them answer these questions,” noted Snovel. PCA&D made it a mission to ensure that everyone would have access to the program. On Friday, June 4, there will be an outdoor exhibition displaying the work of students involved with the Healing Arts program. “In many ways, the exhibition will pay tribute to a wide perspective of diverse individuals so that anyone living and working in Lancaster County can connect to this program,” explained Snovel. The president of PCA&D, Michael Molla, created a new strategic plan concentrating on external relationships that would enable PCA&D to work in conjunction with organizations and institutions around Lancaster County. PCA&D applied for and was awarded a Passion Grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation. “This grant gave us the ability to host an artist in residence and form an advisory committee beyond PCA&D to oversee the Healing Arts program,” explained Todd Snovel, special assistant to the president and director of strategic initiatives and development at PCA&D. The college did not have to look far for an artist to fill the residency. PCA&D was preparing to distribute a press release when Jennifer Quigley made a cold call to the college. “We scheduled an interview with her to hear about her background, vision, and passion for the healing arts, and from that, it was clear we found our artist in residence,” said Snovel. Quigley’s expertise is not simply art therapy, but expressive arts therapy. It’s a process that incorporates numerous creative approaches such as music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, play therapy, and more, which are blended to fit the needs of the client. The Healing Arts program launched in January at PCA&D. “We’ve received a great response from the Advisory Committee,” noted Deborah Barber, director of the institute for leadership, creative entrepreneurship, and innovation at PCA&D. “We have a diverse Advisory Committee with members from the local, state, and national arts, education, and health care communities.” PCA&D’s Healing Arts program offers new pathways and opportunities for students to explore connections between art, community,

“For months, we were displaced, moving and shifting as needed,” said Miller. “We tried to run the school as normal as we could, but everything was scattered and space was limited to store things until we were able to move back upstairs. It’s been quite the year on top of COVID.” Everything in the art room and library was lost in the fire. The ceilings and floors in the classrooms were replaced and the walls were repainted. The white boards and bulletin boards were also replaced. “There’s a huge sense of relief coming back upstairs,” added Miller. “I’m glad we’re able to finish out the school year where we belong.” For the first time, The Jenkins School is opening its annual art show to the public on Saturday, April 17, at the school, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. He showed up every week, ran his race, and never gave up.” At the end of the series, parents have the opportunity to participate in a mile run while their children watch. “I promote this because it’s a way for us to show our kids how much they inspire us,” noted Atticks. “Our kids come out every week and do their best. When her friend asked if Atticks would like to take over as coordinator in the fall, Atticks felt as if it was something she was supposed to do. “I have four children, and my three girls have been a tremendous help ever since I took over the series,” noted Atticks. “They do the warm-ups, the timing … it’s been a family affair.” Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the series was postponed in 2020. This year, however, families are able to come back and participate. “I’ve been trying to build up the series for families in Lancaster County because I feel as though we’ve been so disconnected during the pandemic,” said Atticks. “I really just want people to come out, meet their neighbors, and encourage their kids.” Throughout the series, runners earn points and those with the most points earn trophies, but all participants receive medals. Despite a handful of personal bests and a new school record, the Comets fell short at McCaskey Tuesday, April 6. The boys finished with six wins on the day, four in the field, but lost 95-55 while the girls fell 109-40. “We had some great performances, but McCaskey showed incredible speed on the track,” said head coach Ben Shober, “and we were missing a couple of athletes that would have scored points.” Kyle Murr’s 46-2 triple jump not only won the event but set a new school record. Wednesday, April 6, the Comets fell behind early and never gained ground in an 8-2 loss to Township. Sipel (double), Braegelmann, Swarr and Ethan Adelman each collected hits. SOFTBALL The Comets, faced with three straight games, needed an extra inning to get past Warwick Monday, April 5. After tying the game at 2-2 with a single run in the top of the sixth, and neither team scoring in the seventh, Manor pulled out a solid 6-2 final with four runs in the eighth. Audrey Paterson (2-4) opened the eighth with a single and scored the only run Manor really needed on an Emily Riggs’ double. Maddy Trout, Kaelin Gable (2-4, 2RBI) and Bella Peters, who picked up the win in the circle, all provided base hits to wrap up the scoring. Tori Hook recorded three hits in four at bats to spark the win. The Comets improved to 4-0 with a 14-2 non-league win over Daniel Boone Tuesday. Clinging to a 4-2 lead in the first inning, the Comets, with 11 hits on the day, erupted for seven runs in the second inning and tacked on three more in the fourth. Rigggs went 2-4 on the day with a pair of homers and five RBIs. Riggs, with eight strikeouts and one walk, scattered three hits. Back in league play Wednesday,

Billis and Fahey earned an 84 win at No. 1 while Rabatin and Maxwell dominated with a shutout and Paul Karpouzis and Nico Mann picked up an 8-3 result. Wednesday’s 6-1 win over Cedar Crest featured Rabatin, Davis and Fahey all needing tiebreaker sets to win. Billis won in straight sets at No. 1. He also teamed with Davis for an 8-4 win while Rabatin and Nico Mann also won 8-4. “They were our toughest competition yet,” said head coach Amanda Pryzbylkowski. “Each game took a really long time.”

Dayspring Christian Academy invites women interested in learning more about the Women’s Giving Circle program to attend the membership meeting at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville, on Tuesday, April 20, at 8 a.m. Dayspring created the Women’s Giving Circle, which is designed to bring together women who are committed to the school together to harness the power of collective giving. Participants include family members, friends, or other community members. The Women’s Giving Circle members pool their donations and invest in projects intended to build and strengthen the school. The 2020 Giving Circle supported a resin printer and a drying rack for art, a field study to Sight & Sound Theatre, warm-up shirts for Dayspring athletics teams, equipment for the Dayspring science lab, and outdoor picnic tables for all grades. Any woman can join the Giving Circle at Dayspring by making an annual contribution of a set amount and a commitment to participate in the group’s Lunch and Learn in February, where members see their funds in action; social membership meeting in April; and annual meeting in October. Each year, the combined contributions of the Women’s Giving Circle members will be used to support specific projects and educational services at Dayspring. The members will vote annually in October on which projects will benefit from the fund. Light refreshments will be provided at the April meeting. For more information about the
