Once every two years, students in the youth ministry at Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC) go on a foreign mission trip during the summer. To fund these trips, the church typically hosts a benefit auction; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has not been an auction since April 2018. Well, that’s about to change. The public is invited to attend WSMC’s benefit auction, which will take place at the church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The doors will open at 9:30 a.m.
The return of the annual PA Family Travel Fair will offer opportunities to see mascots, experience magic, and even meet a few Keystone State cowboys.

Returning exhibitors will include premier sponsor Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, which will give away a vacation for four valued at $2,000, including lodging, food, and passes to attractions. “Explore Altoona will be there, and they will bring members with them,” said Royal, who mentioned that DelGrosso’s and Fort Roberdeau Historic Site will be represented at the Altoona booth. Fisher Band will perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The presentation of trophies will take place at 2 p.m. Rudy acknowledged the support of Root’s Market for allowing the event to take place on-site and noted that a variety of the market’s vendors will be available during the show. Rudy encouraged participants to show their support for the Ukrainian people by displaying flags, signs and banners. An additional trophy will be awarded for the entry that shows the most support. Acknowledging the help he’s received in putting together a big event in a short amount of time, Rudy recalled evidence of divine intervention. He connected with someone on Facebook who was giving away trophies, which Rudy plans to retrofit for this event. On his way to pick them up in Maryland, he passed a church. “It was so beautiful and at first, I thought it was a mosque,” he remembered. “Then I saw the
sign. It was the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. That was another sign to me that I was doing the right thing in organizing the car show.” In the event of rain, the show will be postponed to Saturday,

Like many people, Bob Rudy watched the events unfolding in Ukraine and wanted to help. “I wanted to fly over there and carry children and pets to safety,” he recalled saying to his wife, Debra, while watching the news one evening. “This obviously wasn’t a brilliant decision, so my wife suggested using the talents and resources I have right here at home to help out.” Inspired by his love for music and cars, Rudy organized Cruisin’ for Ukraine. The event will be held at Root’s Country Market and Auction, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim, on Saturday, April 23. Although Rudy had the idea, he knew he needed help to make it happen. “Putting a car show together isn’t something an individual can do,” he noted, adding that he recruited his fellow members of a local car club to help. “I couldn’t possibly do it without my brothers and sisters in the Lancaster County Cruisers.” Registration for the show will be by donation and will take place at the event. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and dash plaques will be given to the first 200 vehicles registered. More than 30 trophies will be awarded in the “Anything on Wheels” category, based on the highest amount of donations submitted, and all proceeds will be donated to the Mennonite Central Committee to help the people of Ukraine. The event is a family show, and children are encouraged to enter their own vehicles, including pedal cars or Power Wheels. Family pets will also

Safe Communities in Lancaster and A Better Way of Ohio will present a Child Abuse Prevention seminar to Lancaster County on Friday, April 29, from 1 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The seminar will be held at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola. Both organizations share a mission to prevent child abuse and support survivors in seeking justice and healing, including in Amish and Old Order Mennonite communities. Five keynote speakers and 16 workshop choices will be featured. Opportunities to network and safe spaces for survivors will be offered throughout the seminar. He then coached wrestling at Warwick High School from 1975 to 2003, compiling a record of 318-75-2. His teams won 13 section titles and two District III titles. He was District III Coach of the Year in 1980-81. McDonald has been inducted into the Warwick High School Athletic Hall of Fame, East Stroudsburg Hall of Fame, Lancaster-Lebanon Wrestling Hall of Fame, District III Wrestling Hall of Fame, and Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame. Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 43 annual induction banquet on Saturday, May 7, at 6 p.m. The event will take place at Enck’s Banquet and Conference Center, 1461 Lancaster Road, Manheim. The inductees are Albert Ellis Sr., Earl “Buddy” Stoudt, Jerry McDonald, Theodore King, Pete Shellenberger, and Ray Stern. Ellis is being inducted for basketball. At Columbia High School in 1966, he was second team All-County, and his team won Lancaster County Section and District III Class B championships. In 1967, his senior season, he led the county in scoring with 25.5 points per game. He was First Team All-County and Honorable Mention Small School All-State. Ellis finished his high school career with 913 total points, and his team’s record was a combined 59-10. After high school, Ellis played for the Lancaster Big 5, an amateur team traveling the East Coast. With this team, he won three regional championships, two national championships, and 10 tournament MVP awards. Stoudt is being inducted for football. At Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS), he was a member of the unbeaten 1956 football team. He was a First Team Central Penn Catholic League All-Star in 1957. Stoudt received a full

The Center for Traffic Safety announced recently that local law enforcement agencies from Adams, Lancaster, and York counties will join Pennsylvania State Police and over 300 other municipal agencies to conduct a statewide targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave that runs through Sunday, April 24. The goal of targeted enforcement is to reduce the number of aggressive driving related crashes, injuries, and deaths on roadways throughout the state. The enforcement wave will focus on distracted driving, speeding, and work zone
awareness. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions will also be cited. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement is part of Pennsylvania’s Highway Safety Program and is funded by part of PennDOT’s investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). At age 47, he died from a heart attack while officiating a wrestling match. Shellenberger is being inducted for soccer. He was four-year starter at Manheim Township High School, where he still holds the current records for career goals (40) and single-season goals (26). He was captain of the 1996 team and garnered First Team All-State, Regional All-American, and Lancaster-Lebanon League MVP honors that year. About 200 area families take part in Gigi’s programming. The Playhouse opened in Lancaster in January of 2020, and it is one of more than 50 locations across the U.S. and Mexico. On World Down Syndrome Day, Gigi’s encouraged participants with Down syndrome and their families to wear mismatched socks to celebrate. Activities included a taco party with karaoke in the evening and purposeful programing with an emphasis on helping others during the day. A little before noon, Fantastic Friends, who are adult

Comets Fall in Close Match at Hempfield

Penn Manor visited Hempfield Thursday, March 31. This year, two new head coaches patrolled the sidelines with Brian Kemrer directing the Comets and Kenny Eiser the Knights. And when all was said and done, the Knights barely pulled away. Hempfield won 25-20, 25-20 and pulled out a 26-24 third set after trailing most of the way. “The biggest reason we were in it was that our defense is finally starting to click,” said Kemrer. We’re pretty young, with the exception of Derek Warfel and Max

Last Monday the Comets shook off a 25-19 first set loss to Dallastown to win 3-1, pulling off two straight 25-23 wins before a 25-20 fourth set. Warfel’s 23 kills were a force at the net. He also picked up 10 digs and one ace. Rohrer blocked six times and served once ace in addition to 39 assists. “ We played with fewer errors after that first set,” stated Kemrer. “Our serving was better, and we tightened up the defense. The boys started to relax and play within our game plan.” SOFTBALL The softball team picked up two more wins over the last week. They currently sit at 4-0. “I knew there was an outside shot if my freshman pitcher (Julie Bowmaster) could handle things,” said head coach Dave Stokes, “and she has. She throws well and
then Emily Riggs comes in late and finishes. It’s a tough adjustment for batters.” Manor’s third win of the season was an 8-3 result over Warwick on April 1. The Comets pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of nine walks to score in three different innings. Madeline Mitchell’s four RBIs led the way. Riggs also finished with two hits in three at bats and scored three times. Monday, April 4, the Comets gave up three runs in the first but fought back for a 6-4 win despite being outhit 9-5. “Two errors and a ‘should have caught it’ led to their three early runs,” said Stokes. “Bowmaster shut them down in the second, third and fourth and Riggs threw the last three.” Mitchell’s two run double in the first got the Comets on the board. They took the lead for good with four in the third. Kira Green cracked a solo homer and Reagan Soboleski added a two-run base hit to extend the advantage. Riggs struck out seven and Bowmaster three. BASEBALL After a 5-0 victory over Hempfield, the Comets did not have an answer for Warwick, dropping a 12-0 result Saturday afternoon, April 2. After a scoreless first inning, the Warriors took the lead for good with six hits and
six runs in the second. They capped the scoring, and the game, with a grand slam in the fifth. “Warwick may be the best hitting team in the county this year,” said head coach Tom Fish. Nine-hole hitter Ethan Adelman prevented a nohitter with his third inning single. Bryce Avery and Grant Fry combined for four strikeouts and four walks and gave up nine hits, and seven earned runs. Monday afternoon in Neffsville, the hits were again hard to come by in a 9-2 loss to Manheim Township. Dalton Green’s one out homer in the first inning scored Isaac Braegelman for Manor’s only run of the game. GIRLS’ LACROSSE After a disappointing 22-2 loss to Manheim Township on Thursday, March 31, the lady Comets opened April action with a 5-4 thriller over visiting Elizabethtown Monday, April 4. Despite being outshot 1714, the Comets broke a 3-3 halftime deadlock with a pair of second half goals for their first win of the young season. “They had a chance to tie but Brooklynn Ayala saved us,” said head coach Anneli Starry. “She had 13 saves.” Maddie Weber, with one assist, and Keegan Dings both scored twice while Erin Shipley found the back of the net once.

Colin Kligge and Cole Troop put up the best numbers against Palmyra, bowing out 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. The Comets picked up more games against McCaskey despite the lopsided score. William Steitz and Grant Rost battled at No. 1 doubles before falling short 8-6. Rost also dropped a 63, 6-3 final at No. 4 singles while PJ Fahey scored the most games in a 6-3, 6-4 loss at No. 1. TRACK The track turned in some notable personal records but fell short in knocking off McCaskey Monday, April 4. The boys got a
two-win effort from Kaleb Kabakjian in an 85-65 loss. The sophomore won the mile with a PR of 4:46.4 and took the 3200. Jaryd Kleinhaus won the shot with a personal best 50-11 and Leo Medvedkin led a sweep in the pole vault with a winning 13-foot height. Lebo was second and Harnish grabbed third. Also in the field, Jael Cruz was first in the discus with a 142-1 PR. Friendship Community has announced Mary Ellen Farber as its new chief executive officer (CEO). Farber was scheduled to officially join Friendship Community on March 22, replacing Gwen Schuit, former CEO, who retired at the end of November 2021. Farber holds an MBA and completed doctorate-level coursework in organizational leadership through Eastern University. She is also a licensed personal care administrator, assisted living administrator and nursing home administrator. She most
recently served as CEO for more than 12 years at another faith-based, nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve individuals with intellectual disabilities. Friendship Community is a faith-based organization cultivating capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism in Lancaster and Lebanon counties since 1972. The organization offer an arts day program, a home-based services program, Lifesharing and 24 residential homes serving a total of over 150 individuals in the two counties.
