Troop 146, is the youngest of four brothers to achieve the highest rank in the program, which he earned by fulfilling a variety of requirements including a service project. For his project, Jordan installed a bike repair station in October on the Enola Low Grade Trail.
Jordan’s idea for the project was inspired by his love for mountain biking. The Fizer’s home lies adjacent to an access point to the trail, which Jordan realized would make a perfect location for a bike repair station. In the beginning stages of his project, he reached out to
friends, family members and local businesses to garner fundraising support. With several small donations that totaled around $1,200, Jordan was able to purchase the materials required for the task, including concrete, mulch, a bike rack and a bike pump.
On Thursday, April 13, Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville, will kick off a variety of events to celebrate the completion of the school’s renovation project this past fall. Events will take place over the course of several days, including a student art show, an alumni recognition ceremony, community games and activities and an official dedication of the building.
“This is our way of saying thank you to the community,” said Phil Gale, superintendent for Penn Manor School District. “We know the project impacted a lot of people, and we want to show that we’re grateful for everyone’s sacrifices and patience.”
From 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, artwork from students throughout the school district will be shown and will remain displayed for the duration of the weekend. The art show, which includes work from art classes in every school in the district, was organized as an annual event prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the first time that the district has held the show since 2019.
On Friday, April 14, Penn Manor School District will recognize a group of distinguished alumni at a luncheon at the high school. Prior to the luncheon, the alumni will speak to current students at the school and share
After acquiring the needed supplies, Jordan enlisted the help of fellow Troop 146 members and Scout leaders to construct the repair station. The members of the group worked together to dig holes, pour cement, lay mulch and install tools to allow trail riders to fix flat tires and make minor repairs to their bikes. Once the project was completed, Jordan presented it to the board of review so he could be officially recognized as an Eagle Scout.
The Fizer family has been heavily involved with Scouts for many years; in addition to Jordan’s three older brothers, who achieved the Eagle Scout rank, his parents have both served as den leaders. Jordan’s father, James, continues to serve as a leader for Troop 146. “Jordan has been involved with Scouts since the day he was born. We brought him to every meeting,” James said.
As both Jordan’s father and a troop leader, James said that he has watched Jordan grow through the pro-
gram and acquire important life skills that will serve him for the rest of his life. As a Scout, Jordan has gained experience in public speaking, being able to approach people on personal and professional levels and leading others. Jordan is currently studying at Lancaster County Career & Technology Center and works for Harnish Electric Service in Quarryville. “He’s applying everything that he’s learned through Scouts, and he is excelling,” James said.
In addition to Jordan and his brothers’ becoming a convocation of Eagle Scouts, Jordan is a part of another rare occurrence in the Scouting world. Of the six Scouts who made up Jordan’s den when he first joined in 2011, five are either already Eagle Scouts or well on their way. James said that he plans to continue to serve as a leader for Troop 146 until each young man earns his rank. “My goal is to bring my boys and Jordan’s den all the way through,” James said.

Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, will host the 27th annual Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) education conference on Wednesday, June 21, from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will be available on a first-come-first-serve-basis until Friday, June 9, and an early bird discount will be offered to school district and agency personnel who register before Monday, May 1. To register, visit www.iu13.com.
This year, the theme of the
conference is “Agents of Change … Mission Possible.”
The conference advocates for academic, social and behavioral growth in students by offering educational resources for parents and teachers alike. The organization hopes to shape students into productive citizens and prepare them for success in academic and professional pursuits.
At 8:40 a.m., keynote speaker Shelley Moore will explore the topic of inclusion and how it relates to educators. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alberta, a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University and a doctorate from the University of British Columbia. She has collaborated with school districts and community organizations worldwide to promote inclusion in classrooms.
Morning breakout sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and afternoon breakout sessions will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. The sessions will focus on different aspects of educa-
tion to assist administrators, special educators, general educators, substitute teachers and parents of students.
During the morning sessions, presenters will address topics such as the usage of ecigarettes among students, the difference between decodable and leveled texts, techniques for educating students with autism spectrum disorder and how to creatively engage students with technology in the classroom. In the afternoon sessions, speakers will tackle issues such as managing exhaustion in both teachers and students, creating a safe environment for a diverse range of students and how to use innovative disciplinary practices. Presenters will include education consultants, social workers, teachers and psychologists.
When IU13 first began to
host the conference, it primarily focused on special education topics, but the organization decided to broaden the scope of subjects to include more areas of the schooling world. “A lot of conferences are geared towards a specific group, such as teachers or parents. This conference encompasses everyone; everyone can attend and find something relevant in a session,” said Linda Murr, program support liaison for IU13.
This will be the first IU13 education conference held since 2019, due to the cancellation of the event in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of people have been asking about when the event will happen again over the past few years,” Murr said. “We’re very excited to be bringing the conference back.” For more information, call Murr at 717-606-1878.

ships in the school district and individuals in the community.
The renovation itself began in spring 2019 and was completed in phases over the course of three and a half years. While parts of the school were under construction, teachers utilized temporary classrooms and moved their classes frequently. Many programs for athletics and the-
ater operated around the limited availability of space until the project was completed.
“The impact of the project was felt by everybody, and we’re all very relieved that it’s finished,” Gale said. “In addition to expressing our gratitude, we want to recognize what a significant accomplishment this renovation is for the community.”

The Comets improved to 2-0 in Section One with a tight 8-7 nod at Conestoga Valley Thursday, March 30.
Benedict Flinchbaugh staked the Comets to an early 4-2 advantage, scoring twice in the first quarter. That proved to be the difference as the Bucks, with three goals and one assist from Jeff Fisher, outscored the visitors 5-4 over the final three quarters.
“They returned a lot of experience and Fisher is one of the most talents attackmen we will face this season,” said head coach Connor Rowe. “We had Kyle Schmidtke match up with Fisher and he did a terrific job limiting him. Kyle led the football team in tackles and is a
great example of a multisport athlete and is as physical as they come.
I am proud of the player he is becoming.”
Flinchbaugh finished with four goals. Williard Smith added two and both Eli Warfel and Ayden Hoin scored one each. Mikey Hollister and Grant Bradburn added assists. In goal, Nick Hollinger made some crucial saves and finished with 15 on the day.
“Nick stepped up, as he has always done in big moments since his freshman year,” said Rowe. “He’s only a junior but has been very impactful to our program.
“We have dealt with a lot of adversity so far this season with some of our most talented seniors going down with injuries,” he con-
tinued. “We were down three key pieces against CV, but the guys rallied, and young faces stepped to the plate. To be 4-1, with the adversity we’ve faced, is a great spot.”
At Township Tuesday, the Comets fell behind early, 5-1 in the first quarter, and never regained their footing in an 18-6 loss to the Streaks.
Seven different Streaks contributed to the offensive punch while just three Comets found the back of the net. Flinchbaugh scored a hat trick, Englert scored twice and added two assists, while Grant Bradburn (1g, 1a), Aidan Gerlach (1a) and Willard Smith (1a) rounded out the scoring.
The Comets moved to 4-0 with an 8-4 non-league win at Conestoga Valley Friday, March 31.
The visitors pounded out 12 hits and took the lead for good with a four-run first inning. They extended the advantage with three more runs in the fifth.
Trevor Adams led with three hits, but it was Grant Fry’s two-hit day that played three runs. Stuart Spencer also collected two hits and two RBI.
Brayden Eckert picked up the win on the hill, allowing two runs and three hits over four innings, striking out five. Fry and Christopher Hubbs pitched in relief and combined for five strikeouts, one walk and surrendered two hits.
On Monday they opened Section One play with a 5-3, come-frombehind win over Cedar Crest. The
Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the third on four hits. The Comets got their bats going in the fifth, scoring three runs on three base hits, a double and Grant Fry’s steal of home plate.
Crest went back in front in the top of the fifth by one and the Comets scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to finish on top.
Stuart and Cole Miller each collected two hits and one RBI while Cole Zink, one hit, and Billy Riggs were credited with the other two RBIs.
Bryce Avery struck out nine and gave up nine hits over 4.1 innings of work. Fry pitched 2.2 innings in relief and struck out two and scored two.
The Comets broke a 1-1 first inning tie with five runs over the next six innings and defeated McCaskey 6-1 on Wednesday. Brayden Eckert allowed three hits and one run over six innings, striking out five. Christopher Hubbs pitched one inning in relief.
Manor racked up 11 hits on the day with Trevor Adams going 3-3. Peter Skiadis, Isaac Braegelmann (3RBI) and Zink added two hits each.
TENNIS
The Comets picked up its second one-point non-league win with a 3-2 result at West York, Friday, March 31.
Seth Clark and Vijay Chatha picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles while G Shirley and Aidan Karlow made it 1-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 result. Securing the team win with a 6-0, 64 singles victory was PJ Fahey.
Will Steltz put forth a strong effort at No. 2 but fell short 6-7 (57), 2-6.
The Comets were coming off a 70 loss against Cedar Crest.
The girls’ lacrosse team wrapped up its non-league season with a perfect 6-0 mark with Saturday’s 9-6 victory at Central Dauphin. Joelle Kroesen tallied three goals and dished a pair of assists while Erin Shipley also scored a hat trick with one assist as the Comets broke a tied score at halftime with a strong second half.
“The biggest key to winning was adapting from each other’s trials and errors,” said head coach Anneli Starry. “We made the changes and kept the momentum in our favor.”
Grace Gerner, Catherine Rabatin and Jarliah Ferko also scored.
In goal, Brooklynn Ayala collected eight saves.
The Comets were coming off a 17-6 league win over CV Thursday, March 30. A 12-2 run through the first half set the tone. Kroesen racked up a season-high six goals and dished one assist. Shipley scored five times while Rabatin (2), Gerner, Mia Jones, Jarliah Ferko and Swanson rounded out the scoring.
Ayala and Mackenzie Nafziger combined for eight saves in the win.
“We have solid team defense and
amazing goalies,” stated Starry. “And yes, Joelle and Erin lead in scoring but our entire attack and midfield are all threats. We are very balanced, and our assists are higher than last year’s totals by this point already.”
That win streak crashed to a halt in a 22-2 April 3 loss to Township. Shipley and Kroesen were held to one goal each while Nafziger recorded six saves in goal.
The softball team put together back-to-back shutouts over the last week, blanking Lancaster Catholic 7-0 to wrap up the non-league season and then holding off Cedar Crest 8-0 in the season opener Monday, April 3. Wednesday they added a 13-1 win over McCaskey.
Julie Bowmaster pitched a nohitter against the Falcons with eight strikeouts while Jordan Bailey (2 RBI), Amelia Trout (3 stolen bases) and Regan Soboleski (2 RBI) each had two hits as did Kylie Lamborne who led with three RBI.
The Comets led 3-0 after four innings but took control with a four run fifth, highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Kira Green and Bailey.
Manor gave up one run in the top of the first against McCaskey but
quickly took control, scoring seven in the bottom half en route to the five-inning victory. Bowmaster struck out seven, walked one and surrendered two hits in the win. She helped her cause at the plate, going 2-3 with a double and a 2-run homer in the second inning.
Trout’s grand slam accounted for Manor’s four run third.
Green (3-3), Maddie Mitchell (22) and Bria Booth (2-3) contributed to Manor’s 14 hit effort.
The Comet track teams opened the 2023 season with a home meet against Hempfield on Monday, April 3. Both teams suffered identical 8664 losses but were highlighted by some strong performances. Foremost was Trevor Schneider’s effort in the high jump. The senior, who cleared 6-5, tied Troy Murray’s school record set in 2000.
Also in the field, Wyatt Kauffman won the discus and was second in the shot put while Jason Andro posted top leaps in both the long and triple jumps.
Also picking up two wins each was Jon Osman in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and Drew Lebo who commanded the high and 300 hurdles.
The girls’ team also won eight events with seven coming in the field. GG Moenga, Trinity Mowery, and Sylvia Moenga swept the shot put and Maddie Whited, Cassidy McCollum and Alyssa Jones did the same in the javelin. Whited also won the triple jump.
Mikayla Weaver won the high jump and Jayden Coble was tops in the discus, with Moenga taking second.
Securing Manor’s only win on the track was Jireh Ellis with a 17.5 in the 100 hurdles.
The volleyball team posted mixed results over the last week, grinding out a 3-0 win over Wilson on the 31st before dropping a tough 3-2 league loss to Cedar Crest last Tuesday.
The Comets, behind eight kills by Harry Whited, held off Wilson 27-
25, 25-20, 25-22. Wyatt Rohrer distributed 23 assists, Elijah Julian recorded six digs, Roman Keefer put up one block and Andre Weaver served up a pair of aces.
Against the Falcons, Manor opened with a 25-17 first set win before the visitors needed two extra points for a 27-25 edge to tie things up. The Comets responded, winning the third set 25-21 only to see Crest come back, again, winning 25-14. They pulled away down the stretch, 15-12.
“Right now, we are struggling to maintain consistency into the fifth set,” explained head coach Chris Telesco. “That has hurt because we could’ve only had one loss at this point as opposed to four, but we are certainly building character through all of these four and five set matches.”
Wyatt again was on the receiving
end of Rohrer’s 36 assists, putting down 14 kills. He, along with Reece Andreychek, served one ace. Luke Thomas (2 blocks) and Garrett Cortez (10 digs) also contributed.
“I felt like the first and third sets against Crest were the best we’ve played this season,” said Telesco.

On April 2, Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened “Elementary & The Middle,” an art exhibit that features work from students from first to eighth grades. The exhibit includes students from across the county and will remain in the Kauffman Gallery until Sunday, April 23.
LCAA first held the exhibit last year as a way to encourage young artists to engage with the arts. Prior to the opening, this year LCAA contacted schools from around Lancaster County to invite their art classes to participate. Certain classes chose a specific theme for their students to work within, but the exhibit includes artwork from a variety of mediums such as pastels, oil painting and drawing. “Even just being able to work on the creative side of one’s personality helps in other areas like math and problem solving,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, who is a member of LCAA and helps to coordinate its events. “It’s important to have an outlet and use a different part of your brain.” During the opening of the
exhibit, prizes were awarded to students in different categories for each grade.
LCAA also opened a themed membership exhibit in its Steinmetz Gallery titled “The Natural World.” The exhibit features 11-by-14-inch paintings from members of the organization, each depicting a different scene found in nature, such as landscapes, bodies of water and wildlife. The exhibit will remain in the gallery until April 23 and may be visited during LCAA’s regular hours of Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.
This summer, LCAA will also host a variety of art classes and camps for kids. On Saturdays, April 29, May 6 and
May 13, the organization will host “Clay Days,” a course that will explore different techniques when working with clay and creating sculptures.
On Saturdays, April 15, April 22 and April 29, “Painting Primer” will be held at LCAA to introduce students to multiple painting mediums.
On Saturdays, June 17 and 24, LCAA will host a sketchbook challenge. For the challenge, students will receive a sketchbook and will be encouraged to fill it with drawings as they hone their skills throughout the summer. At the end of the summer, each sketchbook will be displayed at an exhibit to be judged, and awards will be given out to artists for their work.
From Monday, July 10, to Friday, July 14, a painting camp will be held at LCAA for youths between the ages of 10 and 16. Participants in the camp will utilize mediums such as watercolor paint, acrylic paint and mixed media to create pieces inspired by nature. An art show to display their work will be held on July 14, at 12:30 p.m.
“We want to encourage people to bring their children to creative classes and get them involved with the arts,” Keller said. “The more you get young people involved, the better.”
LCAA also offers art classes for adults throughout the year. For more information, visit www.lcaaonline.org.

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host a Women’s Giving Circle membership meeting on Tuesday, April 18, at 8 a.m. The school
SATURDAY,
invites women interested in learning more about the program to attend.
Dayspring created the Women’s Giving Circle to bring together women who
are committed to the schoolcommunity members, family members and friends - so they may harness the power of collective giving. The members of the Women’s Giving Circle pool their donations and invest in projects they believe will build and strengthen the school.
The 2022 Giving Circle supported new Bibles for lower school classroom use; a drying rack and jewelry supplies for art classes; tents for an overnight field study trip to Gettysburg; a centrifuge machine, fingerprinting kits and digital thermometers for upper school science classes; sensory learning items for the school’s learning support program; books and puppets for first-grade classes; and wireless tour receivers for upper school field studies.
Any woman can join the
Giving Circle at Dayspring by making an annual contribution of a set amount and a commitment to participate in the group’s Lunch and Learn, where members see their funds in action; the social membership meeting; and the annual meeting. Each year, the combined contributions of the Women’s Giving Circle membership are used to support specific projects and educational services at Dayspring. The membership votes annually in October on which projects will benefit from the fund.
Light fare and refreshments will be provided at the April meeting.
For more information or to reserve a seat at the April 18 meeting, contact Joanne Martin at 717-285-2000 or jmartin@dayspringchristian .com by Thursday, April 13.

For three days in March, more than 200 middle school students got a firsthand look at careers in the construction industry at ABC Keystone’s Construction Wars. The students had the opportunity for hands-on work with industry professionals in the carpentry, masonry, sheet metal fabrication, electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades.
Represented schools in Lancaster and York counties included Garden Spot Middle School in Eastern Lancaster County School District; Gerald G. Huesken Middle School in Conestoga Valley School District; Manor Middle School in the Penn Manor School District; Warwick Middle School; Eastern York Middle School; Elizabethtown Area Middle School; Donegal Junior High School; The Janus School in Mount Joy; and La Academia Partnership Charter School. Construction Wars was held at ABC Keystone’s headquarters, 135 Shellyland Road, Manheim.
“We offer this event to provide middle school students with exposure and awareness of our industry and hopefully spark their interest as they are making decisions moving into high school,” shared Stephanie
R. Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development for ABC
Keystone. Larkin explained that students created a variety of take-home projects during the event, including a sheet metal toolbox and a wooden bench. Additionally, they wired lightbulbs and created a circuit, laid brick, were introduced to basic safety and CPR and learned about refrigeration.
Now is the time for students to consider careers in construction, Larkin said, noting that the demand for trade skills grows annually. Average wages for some trades are $70,000 per year, and apprentices participate in earn-while-you-learn programs, allowing them to access
educational opportunities while working, with the potential to graduate debt free. She also emphasized that the industry provides multiple education and career pathways, ranging from apprenticeship to journey-level worker to business owner.
ABC Keystone has held the event for more than five years, and Larkin remarked that it requires support from the community to pull it off. “The event is only possible because we have 30 to 35 volunteers each day and very generous member sponsors who provide hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, T-shirts, construction materials and lunches, along with items for goodie bags,” she said.
