Sunny Day Camp To Shine Light On Law Enforcement BY COURTNEY MENGEL

When Sgt. Samantha Minnucci became the director of Camp Cadet of Chester County in 2014, her youngest brother, Gabriel Minnucci, was eager to help her set up for the event. After Camp Cadet ended, Gabriel couldn’t stop asking his sister about the program and noting how he wanted to enroll in the camp one day. However, Samantha knew that wouldn’t be possible because Gabriel has special needs and is over the age limit. As a result, she decided to create a program so that her brother could learn about the law enforcement agencies that serve the local community. “Gabriel has an amazing personality and lights up any room when he walks into it,” said Samantha. “He has the biggest heart and has always been my No. 1 fan in my career choice.” See Sunny Day pg 3

From Cub Scout To Eagle Scout: A Promise

Edgell asked all of the attending Scouts to promise that they would continue Scouting and become Eagle Scouts, and they all agreed. For Edgell’s Eagle Scout project, he installed new signs for all of the different species of trees at Safe Harbor Arboretum. Edgell noted that as he grew up in the area, he visited the arboretum a lot and saw that the signs were deteriorating. He also built a kiosk that displays a map of the trees, the original list of trees, an updated list, and some history of the Safe Harbor Park. “I’m very proud of him,” commented Frey, an assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 146. “I couldn’t be prouder. It’s a big accomplishment.”

Frey emphasized that becoming an Eagle Scout takes a lot of effort, work, and dedication. Edgell currently attends Lancaster County Career and Technology Center for metal fabrication and has an internship in Wrightsville where he welds and fabricates. After graduating from PMHS, he plans to pursue this work as a career. For those who want to become an Eagle Scout, Edgell has some advice. “No matter how far away and how difficult it seems, because there will be points that you want to give up, don’t,” he said. “You have all of the leaders and your troop to help you. It’s worth it in the end. Just stick it out.”

hen Penn Manor High School (PMHS) senior Donovan Edgell was a Cub Scout with Pack 146 of Conestoga, his grandfather Fred Frey took him to a Stauffers of Kissel Hill location to sell popcorn with other Cub Scouts. On that Saturday morning, Edgell asked a gentleman exiting the grocery store if he would like to buy some popcorn or make a donation to send popcorn overseas to the military. The gentleman, a veteran, explained that he didn’t eat popcorn, but if Edgell made a promise, then he would make a military donation. The promise was to become an Eagle Scout. Edgell reached

out, shook the veteran’s hand, and said he would do it. Well, he did it. On March 27, Edgell, a member of Troop 146, received the rank of Eagle Scout - the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. Not only that, but he was also given an Eagle Palm, which he earned by getting five more merit badges than what was required to become an Eagle Scout. “That promise played a very big part in me staying and finishing this and seeing it to the end,” explained Edgell. “Everyone around me was supporting me and cheering me on to finish this and finish this strong.” At the ceremony where Edgell formally received his new rank,

Churches Post Easter Weekend Activities Local churches will host a variety of events for Easter weekend, beginning with a Living Last Supper service on Maundy Thursday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Conestoga United Methodist Church (UMC), 71 Sand Hill Road, Conestoga. Men from area churches - including Safe Harbor, Colemanville and Conestoga United Methodist churches and Live With Purpose Church - will portray Jesus and His disciples eating their final Passover meal

together. The Rev. Richard J. Rimert Jr. and a second person will read the script, which is based on Mark 14:12-26. The narrators will describe each man and how he was called to ministry. The Living Last Supper will also include Communion, led by the actor portraying Jesus, and attendees will be invited to partake. Glutenfree wafers will be available. The goal of the Living Last Supper is to make a key part of the Easter story real to

attendees. Organizers hope that attendees will learn about the disciples and think about which disciple they are most like. On Good Friday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m., a Tenebrae service will be held at Safe Harbor United Methodist Church (UMC), 3687 River Road, Conestoga, where Rimert also serves as pastor. An Easter egg hunt will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, at Conestoga UMC. The hunt will be held rain or shine. On Easter Sunday, April 17, a sunrise service will be held at 7 a.m. across the road

from Safe Harbor UMC at a neighbor’s farm. The farm contains an old lime kiln that looks like the open mouth of a tomb. Attendees should bring chairs. After the service, a hot breakfast will be served in the church’s fellowship hall. The service will be held indoors if it is raining. Worship services will be held on Easter at Safe UMC at 9 a.m. and at Conestoga UMC at 10:30 a.m. Many of these events are returning after being discontinued or downsized because of COVID for the past few years.

Lancaster Modern Etiquette will present “Dine With Style: Dining Etiquette for Teens” on Saturday, April 9, at 2 p.m. at the INSPIRE Business Center, 226 N. Arch St., Lancaster. Founded in 2020, Lancaster Modern Etiquette is dedicated to teaching the principles of proper etiquette, good manners and kindness. Shoppers can pick up clothing, housewares and furniture for a bargain, while their purchases provide support on a global scale. After a minimal portion of the proceeds is used to keep the stores in operation, most of the money raised is donated to MCC. “Donations from the thrift shops are designated to ‘where needed most,’” Anye said, explaining that the funds are used to support domestic and international work of MCC. MCC partners with other organizations to provide care kits to prisoners, agriculture education to farmers and peaceful conflict resolution education, as well as many other initiatives in the more than 40 countries where MCC works, Anye noted. To date, MCC Thrift shops have contributed more than $250 million to help people in need. The first MCC Thrift shop opened in 1972 in Manitoba, Canada. Since then, the network has expanded to more than 85 stores across Canada and the United States. In Lancaster County and just outside the county, there are seven MCC Thrift shops: Columbia Re-Uzit Shop, Country Gift & Thrift Shoppe in Gap, Main Street Closet in Willow Street, Mount Joy Gift & Thrift, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland and Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe. LM Announces Youth Sports Changes Lancaster Mennonite School (LM) announced that the former Mennonite Sports Organization (MSO) will get a facelift and restructure its offerings. The youth sports program operated by the school changed its name to Lancaster Mennonite Youth Athletics (LMYA). The name change is a signal to parents, students, and the community of how the program is expanding and realigning focus. While the mission remains to offer Christ-centered youth sports programs that transform student-athletes to grow in character and skill during their pre-middle school and high school years, there is now an increased emphasis on adding competitive offerings for

older youths to prepare them for participating in LM’s competitive middle school and high school sports teams. Currently, LMYA has several youth sports offerings. They include soccer, field hockey, and basketball for kindergarten to sixth grade and softball and baseball for kindergarten through eighth grade. LMYA is not exclusive to Lancaster Mennonite School students. Students who attend LM and those who are part of the local community and do not attend LM are welcome to participate in the teams and can register for a sports league at www.lancaster mennonite.org/athletics/mso. Starting as early as this spring, in advance of LM’s system-wide unification, LMYA will offer travel teams

for the oldest divisions of the LMYA sports available. The younger divisions will be known as the recreation league and will match their current format. This new structure’s design will match what many school districts are doing during the intermediate and middle school years for their internal

student-athletes. This structure is designed to help grow LM’s student-athletes to compete at the varsity level in the future. Additional changes include having all LMYA games and practices at the LM Lancaster campus, using LM’s facilities, outdoor fields, and indoor courts. LM has two indoor gyms, multiple grass fields, and a new turf surface at its stadium that will be completed this summer.

Gish is now working with others on new watershed restoration plans for Marsh Creek in Centre County and the Upper Conestoga in Lancaster, Berks, and Chester counties.

BASEBALL On a chilly Tuesday afternoon, Hunter Sipel cracked a seventh inning, two out, two strike grand slam to propel the Comets to a 12-9 comefrom-behind win over defending 6A district champs Wilson. Manor fell behind 9-6 going into that seventh inning. “What high drama,” said first year coach Tom Fish, a Penn Manor grad who previously coached at Solanco. “Hunter hit for the cycle and went 4-for-5 on the day. He tripled in the first, had a two out RBI single in the second and his two out, two run double in the sixth gave us a 6-5 lead before the seventh inning grand slam iced it. Seven RBIs in all, all with two outs.” Sophomore Bryce Avery went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and a triple in his varsity debut. He also pitched in the seventh to earn the save. Junior catcher Isaac Braegelmann went 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI.

TRACK The track teams traveled to Hempfield last Tuesday, March 29, but couldn’t keep up with the Knights. In a 102-47 loss, the boys found the most success in the field, where Jaryd Kleinhaus (shot put) and Lebo (pole vault) captured firsts. They also picked up seconds in the shot (Jael Cruz), discus (Wyatt Kauffman), triple jump (Lebo), high jump (Trevor Schneider) and pole vault (Aaron Harnish). On the track, Leonid Medvedkin won the 100 and Kaleb Kabakjian was tops in the 3200. The girls’ squad also fell short, 91-59, and also found their strength in the field, capturing five of their seven wins. Lebanon VAMC Physician Honored Dr. Adam J. Albert, a physician at the Lebanon VA Medical Center (VAMC), part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, was awarded the 2021 Medicine Clerkship Teacher of the Year Award for Affiliate Faculty in the Medicine Category from the Penn State College of Medicine.
