Exhibit highlights local student artwork

Student artists in Penn Manor School District earned a total of 36 awards for this year’s Lancaster County Young Artists exhibit. The regional competition, which is organized through a partnership between the Demuth Foundation, the Lancaster Museum of Art and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, opened with a reception on March 8. This year’s award winners include Jason Joniec, Adessa Bradley, Vienne Kreider, Jami Bachman, Mikayla Resser, Willow Ashworth, Janell Ortiz, Sophia Swanson, Rose Emenheiser, Adelyn Martin, Jerelyn Burns, Jasmine Uleary, Olivia Haldeman, David Fogel, Andrea Clare, Anayah Rosa, Emersyn Schaeffer, Sophia Schoonover and Kaitlyn Spalletta. The exhibit is hosted at the Lancaster Museum of Art and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design simultaneously, and it features

the work of students from middle schools and high schools throughout the county. A selection of pieces made by artists from Penn Manor High School will remain on display until Sunday, April 7, at the Lancaster Museum of Art, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. Artwork from an additional seven school districts will be exhibited at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in Lancaster city.

Every year, students between seventh and 12th grades are invited to submit work in the Lancaster County Young Artists exhibit, which is open to kids who are enrolled in a local district as well as homeschooled youths. The regional competition includes categories for apparel, ceramics and glass, digital art, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and many other mediums.

Art teachers in each school district select work from their students to enter in the contest every year. Once the submissions are judged, artists who have been

For a group of local veterans, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Sure, the nutrition is important. But the real sustainability comes from fellowship, shared experiences and compassion.

The group goes by the name of Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club (LCVBC). While it’s sort of a cross between a self-help outreach program and a support group, it’s also a reminder that United States

veterans have always come up with ways to get the job done.

“There’s a camaraderie with all of us,” said LCVBC founder Bill Terry. “There is a bond. We are all brothers and sisters. It’s honoring those who have gone before us. There’s an understanding that we gave to the defense of our country. It’s what all of us have in common. It might have been a higher calling because it’s not for everyone.”

LCVBC meets on the third Saturday of every month. Over the past five years, the breakfast

In 1863, German woodworker Michael Dentzel sent his 17-yearold son, Gustav, to open a cabinet store the United States. Gustav began crafting carousels, including one that was installed in Rocky Springs Park in Lancaster in 1899. As improvements were made to the park over the years, the carousel was enhanced as well; a building was constructed around the carousel, and it was upgraded with mechanisms that run on electricity instead of

steam. The attraction remained at the park until 1982, but few Lancaster County residents know what became of Gustav’s famous carousel since then.

The longer it remained at Rocky Springs Park, the more the carousel became intertwined with Lancaster’s history. In 1963, local residents began protesting at the park due to its segregated pool, and the attractions were closed to the public in 1968. Rocky Springs Park reopened more than a decade later, but attendance was heavily impacted by the nuclear

club had met at a restaurant in Bird-in-Hand before a fire temporarily shut down the restaurant.

In the upcoming months, LCVBC has scheduled meetings at 6:45 a.m. on April 20, May 18 and June 15 all at the former Revere Tavern, 3063 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Many of the breakfasts are paid for by sponsors, including local businesses.

“It didn’t start out with a mission,” said Terry, a resident of East Hempfield Township and a Vietnam War-era Navy veteran. “It was just a way to get vets together. It was a time to have breakfast with other veterans. Then some gentlemen began stepping up and paying for the breakfast. Now we have a jar and pass it around and collect funds for veterans’ groups. We’re still giving back to the community, even though some of us have already put our lives on the line.”

A typical LCVBC gathering could include the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, the relaying of jokes and a guest speaker.

“There seems to be a lack of understanding toward what veterans have done,” said Terry. “If you were not in battle, it’s much easier to get acclimated back into civilian

life. If you were in battle, it is hard.”

Anywhere from 100 to 130 local veterans show up for the breakfasts. Most hail from the Vietnam War era, but the group also includes veterans of World War II, Korean War, the war in Afghanistan and other military conflicts.

“The interaction that goes on there is great,” said Terry. “There is an element of support to it.”

According to the United States Department of Defense, less than 1% of the country’s total population is currently serving in the military, and only about 10% of the total population are veterans. Nearly 17 veterans commit suicide each day, according to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Vets wear hats so we can identify each other,” said Terry. “It’s not for the civilians. It’s so we know who served. I’ll look for the hats when I’m handing out business cards for the breakfast club. The breakfast club is a way to come out and be with like-minded people. For some, it’s a way to continue to serve the community.”

Veterans are encouraged to make reservations for the breakfast by calling Mary at 717-929-0310.

chosen for the exhibit are contacted directly to drop off their work. “When selecting a student’s work, I ask myself the following questions: Has the student effectively and appropriately used art materials to enhance their idea and/or concept? Have they created a deeper meaning beyond work that looks visually appealing?” said Alexis Carson, who teaches art at Penn Manor High School. “These questions assist my selection process, amongst many other qualities as it pertains to students’ work.”

Lancaster County Young Artists was initially run by multiple volunteers. In recent years, the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Demuth Foundation took over the management of the annual contest.

“Over the past two years, I have

taken students to the museum after the exhibition opens to view their own work if it is entered, and the work of the other student artists in the area,” Carson said. “This is a valuable experience for two reasons: students gain insight to what artists their age are creating and pull inspiration from that work.”

MAHS to host second presentation on C. Emlen Urban

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS), in cooperation with Millersville University (MU), will offer a special, repeat slide presentation on the making of “Urban Legend,” a book that tells the story of Lancaster architect C. Emlen Urban and his architectural masterpieces found in the city of Lancaster. The program will be held on Saturday, April 6, at 9 a.m. in MU’s Myers Auditorium at McComsey Hall, 43 E. Frederick St., Millersville.

MAHS scheduled the upcoming talk for MU’s Myers Auditorium to accommodate those people who had to be turned away because of an overflow crowd when the

program was first offered by the society at its usual meeting site in January. Myers at McComsey Hall will have space for these individuals, as well as many others who are interested in hearing the story of how the book about Urban came about.

Parking will be available on James Street across from the Lombardo Welcome Center and adjacent to McComsey Hall. To view the campus map, visit www. millersville.edu/directions.

Gregg Scott, local architect, historian and author of “Urban Legend,” will share a presentation titled “Urban Legend: The Untold Story!” Scott will cover the numerous mysterious and unusual events and discoveries that led him to

become serious about producing the book, which was released late last year. He also will discuss some of the national accolades for content and design the publication garnered since its debut. All those attending will receive a card offering a 20% discount on the purchase of the book, copies of which will be available in Myers Auditorium.

717-205-7293

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. For more details, contact Phil Gerber, MAHS president, at 717-872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com.

Scott is a member of the College of Fellows in the American Institute of Architects. He is partner emeritus and co-founder of RLPS Architects in Lancaster. He shares his expertise with the community through his ongoing architectural column and by serving as architectural correspondent for WGAL-TV8. He has twice received the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County’s Journalist and Educator Award.

Ladies group to host Eleanor Isaacson

The Ladies Night Out group from Millersville Community Church will host Eleanor Isaacson, who will speak at its meeting at Hope Campus on Friday, April 12. The church is located at 242 Bender Road in Millersville, and the event will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Isaacson is a World War II survivor, mentor, speaker and co-author of her memoir “Dancing From Darkness,” which won Memoir of the Year in 2018 by the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association.

Born in New Jersey, Isaacson was sent to Germany as a toddler at the onset of the war. She endured

bombings, starvation and numerous horrific challenges before returning to America at the age of 13 just before the Iron Curtain fell.

Knowing no English, but with God’s help, she overcame the language barrier, deafness and solitude to build a fulfilling life in the United States. She earned a double bachelor’s degree, became a successful entrepreneur and a champion ballroom dancer and married renowned scientist Robert Isaacson.

Ladies Night Out is open to the community for women who wish to enjoy the friendship and

fellowship of other ladies in a safe and welcoming environment. The group meets on the second Friday of the month and offers a variety of activities. In the past, the group has hosted speakers on relaxation techniques, herb gardening, self-defense, first aid and others. They have hosted tap and Irish dancers, enjoyed bingo and craft nights, pool parties and an annual birthday party for Jesus.

The events are free of charge, but good will offerings are received. Snacks will be provided. To register, call the church office at 717-872-4571.

Church to host anniversary events

Grace Lutheran Church, 517 N. Queen St., Lancaster, will observe the 150th anniversary of its founding on Sunday, April

21. The church began as a Sunday school mission of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in downtown Lancaster.

Two special events will lead up to the anniversary day: a choral service with a choir cantata and a lecture about the present Grace Church building. On Sunday, April 7, the choral service will feature the cantata “Christ Lay in Death’s Strong Bands” by Bach, complete with soloists, choir, string orchestra and organ.

David McConnell, director of music at Grace, will lead the church’s 25-voice choir and soloists in the choral work, which is based on the words of Martin Luther. The melody was written by Luther’s musical assistant Johann Walther in 1524. Luther’s text deals strongly with redemption from sin through Jesus’ victory over the grave, and each movement of the closes with a joyous “Hallelujah.”

The Rev. Dr. Stephen Verkouw,

pastor, will lead the congregation in the evening prayer liturgy, some of it also sung.

Additionally on Sunday, April 14, Gregory Scott, a Lancaster architect and a scholar on the work of C. Emlen Urban, will speak on the current Grace Church building, one of Urban’s notable public buildings in Lancaster. Scott recently released “The Urban Legend: the Life and Legacy of C. Emlen Urban,” which features the Grace Church building as an example of Urban’s work.

Both events will begin at 4 p.m. and offer free admission. Grace Lutheran Church is located at North Queen and James streets, Lancaster. Parking will be available a half-block south of the church on North Queen Street in the city parking garage between Lemon and James streets. Parking vouchers will be available upon request to those who use that facility.

accident at Three-Mile Island and a local polio outbreak. To ensure its safety, the carousel was removed from Rocky Springs in 1982. It was placed in Lake Lansing Park in Michigan the following year, where the carousel was active until the park’s closure in 1986. In 1989, the carousel was moved to Dollywood, an amusement park in Tennessee owned by country singer Dolly Parton. The carousel was rebranded as the Dollywood Dentzel Carousel, and it remained at Dollywood for nearly a decade. Finally, after being purchased by a group known as the Friends of the Rocky Springs Carousel in 1998, the historic ride returned to Lancaster, where it has hidden in storage ever since.

Despite the historical significance

and rarity of the Rocky Springs Carousel, every attempt at restoring the Rocky Springs Carousel to its former glory and finding a new home for it has been unsuccessful. According to a 2020 census conducted by the National Carousel Association, the ride is one of 208 classic wood carousels in North America. Of these 208 antiques, only 18 were manufactured by the Dentzel Carousel Company.

In 2021, Willow Street resident Eileen Gregg published a book to chronicle the story of the famous attraction titled “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel.” The book includes the history of the Dentzel family and photos of the ride that have never been published before. On Jan. 29,

2024, Gregg organized the screening of the first half of a film at Willow Valley Communities that includes videos of the carousel in use during the ‘90s. The footage was taken by Robert Scuorzo of Henderson, N.C., who sent it to Gregg for safekeeping. Gregg plans to hold a viewing of the film’s second half in the near future.

“I am very fortunate to have the film,” Gregg said. “The first half of the film shows the carousel in operation, and some of the scenes are of the carousel’s final day of operation that took place at the end of the 1998 Christmas season.”

For more information or to find out when the next film screening will take place, search for “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure - The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel” on Facebook.

Veritas Community posts sermon series

The Veritas Community will begin a new sermon series titled“Seven”on Sunday, April 7. The church gathers every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The first 15 minutes of the gathering are dedicated to fellowship.

The new series will explore Revelation 2 and 3, which contain letters to seven churches in Asia Minor. These churches were seeking to follow Jesus in the midst of the Roman Empire. The series will seek

to answer the question “What can we learn about following Jesus as individuals and as a community in 2024 and in the midst of our own empires from these seven letters written to these seven churches around 2,000 years ago?”

The series will begin with the letter to the church in Ephesus in Revelation 2:1-7 on April 7. Additional weeks will focus on the churches in Smyrna, using the text Revelation 2:8-11, on April 14; Pergamum,

Revelation 2:12-17, on April 21; Thyatira, Revelation 2:18-29 on April 28; Sardis, Revelation 3:1-6 on May 5; Philadelphia, Revelation 3:7-13 on May 12; and Laodicea, Revelation 3:14-22 on May 19. On Sunday, May 26, the church will hold a Memorial Day weekend picnic.
