Students helping students. That’s the impetus for the Aevidum Club.
The Aevidum Club was created in 2003 by students at Cocalico who had lost a friend to suicide, Marticville Middle School club adviser Danielle Croft said. “They didn’t know if they could talk about it or how to talk about it,” she said. “Out of that tragedy came Aevidum.”
Croft stated, “It’s a club where peers get training on how to support their peers. By no means are we teaching them to be therapists or psychologists or counselors but to recognize the signs and symptoms in their peers and help them seek help to the 988 crisis helpline, a psychologist or counselor, or our SAP (Student Assistant Program) team here at Marticville.”
A total of 21 students from Marticville Middle School and Penn Manor High School attended the fifth annual Aevidum Live Conference, which was held at the Delta Hotel in Allentown on Feb. 27. The interactive event is dedicated to mental health advocacy and awareness.
Out of more than 300 clubs nationwide, Penn Manor School District’s Aevidum clubs were honored as the Club of the Year, a recognition of their dedication to fostering mental health awareness and support within their schools and community, Croft said.
The adviser noted Penn Manor received the honor because of its outreach events and how students have stayed in Aevidum year after year. She said the group’s friendto-friend training is empirically supported by Penn State University research. “It shows that what we’re doing is saving lives and
working for kids,” Croft said.
In the 22 years since the Aevidum Club was founded, it has grown to include clubs in Ohio, Missouri, Texas, Maryland, and Delaware.
Croft said there are 40 club members at Marticville, 20 at Manor Middle School, and 50 at Penn Manor High School. Marticville’s club meets approximately 28 times during the school year. Members visit the district’s elementary schools to tell sixth-graders about Aevidum.
“I think it’s important for students to be involved because I see so many students struggling with an anxiety, with PTSD, with ADHD, with all of these things that were definitely a problem when I was growing up, but it was not OK to talk about it,” said Croft, who is a member of the national Aevidum board of directors. “So we want to shatter that stigma so kids can get

The Conestoga Herb Guild will hold six events during the remainder of the year that are open to the public.
On Wednesday, April 9, John Wallace, a retired Millersville University professor, will deliver a presentation called “The Good,
the Bad, and the Ugly of Gardening Insects: Managing the Mob.” The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road.
Club member Mary Ann Steinhauer said Wallace will speak about the beneficial bugs in gardens and why gardeners should want them around. He

Families can channel their inner archaeologist at a Fossil Safari sponsored by the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC).
The educational event will be held Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. There is no fee for admission. Preregistration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more
information or to register, email LCFMC@LancasterCountyFossil AndMineralClub.org.
LCFMC, which was founded by Catherine and Chris Haefner, held its first Fossil Safari on a Thursday night last November and will hold this one on a weekend due to popular demand. “It was well received,” said Sue Garrett, who is one of the event organizers. “The kids absolutely loved it.”
The Fossil Safari will feature a variety of fossils collected by Sue and her husband, Chuck,

will also address the worldwide decrease in insect population and the impact it will have on habitats.
The organization will hold its annual Plant and Seed Exchange Wednesday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Millersville VFW. Members will bring at least four potted plants and saved seeds from their garden to trade and will also answer questions about the plants they are donating.
“Members want to share what they have, which is how this group operates,” said Steinhauer. “If you’re someone who wants to get started in developing your own garden, this would be a
good time to come.”
Members will teach newcomers how to plant the herbs and how to use them after they are grown. Experienced gardeners will also benefit. “If you are already an (herb grower), you may want to get some refreshing plants to improve your garden,” Steinhauer said.
There is a fee to attend these events. People should preregister for all public Guild activities by contacting Susan Atkins by phone at 717-725-7451 or via email at atkinsateb@aol.com. For more information about the club, go to www.conestogaherbguild.org.
The following public events
will also take place during the guild’s monthly meetings, which are held on the second Wednesday of each month and begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Millersville VFW.
On Aug. 13, the Conestoga Herb Guild will host a presentation by Marilyn Martin titled “Cheese Making: A Creative Way to Use Milk.”
On Sept. 10, Brenda Walker will speak about the topic “Keys to Successful Composting.”
On Nov. 12, the topic of Master Gardener Sherry Watson’s talk will be “Winter Sowing: A Fun and Easy Technique for Growing Plants for Your Garden.”
who work with the soil to know that are insects that help the ecosystem you’re creating, whether it be herbs, flowers, whatever,” said Steinhauer. “It’s about educating people when they come. They want to know this information.”
The Conestoga Herb Guild has grown in popularity in recent years and was forced to cap its membership to 75 because of space limitations. People can join a waiting list.

The Conestoga Herb Guild will hold its annual Herb Festival on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Millersville VFW.
“Once people come to an event, they see the enthusiasm and the excitement,” Steinhauer said. “Maybe they were reluctant to come initially, but the excitement is contagious.”
She added that people will come away having learned something. “I think it’s really helpful for gardeners and people
“Usually, we get a speaker to come in and talk about growing herbs, culinary uses of herbs, and medicinal uses of herbs,” said Steinhauer. “Learning how herbs can enhance your life.”
Members make meals with herbs as a key ingredient and share recipes. Steinhauer touted the group’s camaraderie. “It’s about gathering with likeminded people that really love herbs and love gardening,” she said. “We also have an educational mission. We want to make sure people know which herbs are harmful, which herbs are the most beneficial.”

from Pennsylvania, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Florida, along with educational displays, including a hands-on activity where kids use small shovels to scoop up dirt and gravel and search for shark teeth.
Club members will guide kids and their families “state by state” and educate visitors on the various fossils found in that specific state as well as collecting techniques.
Participants can arrive anytime between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The kids will join the Fossil Safari in progress at the current speaker location and rotate with the speaker and group, visiting each state fossil table during the safari rotation.
It is estimated that visitors will spend between 10 and 15 minutes at each station, and the entire safari will
help and feel like they’re not a burden. They don’t have to hold that all in.”
take an average of an hour and a half, depending on interest and participation. “It’s a family adventure,” Sue said. “Families follow their kids along.”
After the families complete their safari, they are welcome to revisit any booths on their own while a new safari rotation starts again.
Food by the Trinity Church Guild will be available for purchase.
Sue, who lives in Lancaster, rediscovered her love of fossil hunting with Chuck. “It’s a childhood passion and hobby that I’ve had,” she said. “We have always been interested in it. We were looking for something to be able to do together. We have met so many interesting people all across the United States doing this. It’s interesting when you make friendships based on the same passion you have.”
Sue noted that introducing fossils
Club members receive friend-tofriend training so they can be aware of when a classmate may be having some difficulties. “They get training on how to recognize signs and symptoms that their friends may be struggling and the resources to point them in the direction to get help,” Croft said.
and minerals to young people is beneficial on a couple levels. “It’s important to get kids involved with science,” she said. “Then our club can continue on in the future. You always have to have new interest. It’s really interesting to see this spark passion. Some of the kids who come in might not be interested (at first), but they have siblings who are interested. Once they’re there, they’re very excited about it.”
She hopes the Fossil Safari encourages a new generation of fossil hunters. “I’m sure someone sparked our interest when I was young,” Sue said. “I was a fossil hunter when I was little. Then I took a break because of my (nursing) career. I needed something that I’m interested in again, so I went back to something from my childhood. You never know who you are going to inspire.”
The Lancaster County Fossil and
Croft praised the Marticville club’s student leaders, who include youth advisory board members Payton Forst, Thomas Williams, and Emma Gring. “It’s a student-driven club,” the teacher said. “They make social media posts, hold special events, and come up with ideas to carry on the mission.”
Payton said, “It’s important for me to be in this club because I feel like I want to help people.”
Thomas stated the Aevidum Club gives out candy and positive messages during the year and places posters around the school.
Student Daphne Troupe pointed out a way to find out a friend may be struggling. “One of the signs is personality change,” she said, “(like) if someone is usually a happy person, but then the next day doesn’t talk at all.”
Student Emmelyn Rhoads said
Mineral Club meets the last Thursday of each month beginning at 7 p.m. at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. Everyone is welcome to attend a meeting. There is a fee to become a member. Sue said the meetings feature monthly speakers with diverse educational backgrounds and visits from geologists and others knowledgeable about fossils and minerals. The group also takes field trips.
everyone can benefit from lessons learned in the club. “It helps you be more aware of others, and some of the things you learn help everyone,” she said.
Student Danielle Williams mentioned the club will hold a 5K this spring.
The Lancaster In-Person Strides Against Stigma 5K will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Herr Park, 205-155 Ironstone Ridge Road, Lancaster, next to Manor Middle School. Participants will run or walk a 5K course, or they can choose a shorter path at the park.
Registration is free, but those who make a minimum donation will receive an Aevidum shirt.
