Your Next PA Adventure Starts Here

“Ilike to call this event ‘the most fun you’ll have planning your vacation,’” said Wendy Royal, event coordinator for the PA Family Travel Fair. “It’s free to attend. You can go around, get all kinds of information - visitors’ guides, brochures and information about things only the locals know.”

The eighth annual PA Family Travel Fair will be held on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon.

It will feature more than 50 vendors and exhibitors showcasing destinations and attractions from throughout the state.

“They are there to hand out free information. There’s no selling,” Royal said. “You can talk to the vendors, and they can answer any questions you have. Nobody knows

their area or their attraction better than they do.”

Vendors will represent all corners of the state, providing ideas for summer getaways, day trips or longer vacations. Participants will include amusement parks; campgrounds; museums; and visitor bureaus, including the PA Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau.

“People love the outdoors in Pennsylvania. One of our new vendors is the Keystone Elk Country Alliance,” Royal said, adding that the Elk County-based group will have lots of information on the elk herds that populate the region.

“They’ll have information on the best times to see the elk, and they’ll give people lots of ideas of things to do in the area.”

New this year, the PA Family Travel Fair will feature two grand prize giveaways.

“We have two big getaways this year, instead of one like we’ve

had in the past,” Royal said. “Both are for families of four, and they include lodging, attractions, vouchers, gift cards for restaurants and more. One is from Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, and one is from Destination Gettysburg.”

The first 500 people in the door at the travel fair will receive a goodie bag, perfect for stuffing full of information picked up at vendor booths, Royal said, adding, “Your bag will be full by the end of the day.”

The event is truly for the whole family, with plenty of options for kids to have fun.

“We have a kids’ passport, which encourages kids to interact with the vendors,” Royal explained.

“One lucky youngster will win eight all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park.”

Additionally, a balloon artist will entertain from 10 a.m. to noon,

Sowmya Surapaneni considers Lancaster County her second home.

The Mechanicsburg resident has made numerous trips to the Hempfield recCenter with her kids.

When her children matriculated, Surapaneni elected to take a break from her 15-year career as a physician with Penn State Health. Her friend Leena Patel had a suggestion. “Leena said I should consider opening a Goddard School location as a way of giving back to the community,” Surapaneni said. “I started looking into options.”

On Jan. 10, the two friends officially launched the first Goddard School franchise in Lancaster County at 715 Indian Springs Drive, Lancaster.

The next-closest sites are in York and Hershey, Surapaneni said. Patel also owns The Goddard School of York and The Goddard School of Philadelphia - Spring Garden.

The Goddard School, which operates year round, is for kids from 6 weeks of age to 5 years old and serves almost 100,000 students in 38 states and Washington, D.C.

The Lancaster County location is set in a 14,000-square-foot early childhood education center with 13 classrooms that can accommodate a total of approximately 175 students, who will be guided by 40 teachers.

Surapaneni said the school features an indoor gymnasium and an outdoor classroom alongside multiple playgrounds.

Aliza Becker Named Teacher of the Year Semifinalist

Eshleman Elementary School teacher Aliza Becker instructs her fifth-grade students.

Aliza Becker, a fifth-grade teacher at Eshleman Elementary School in Penn Manor School District (PMSD), is one of 24 semifinalists for the 2027 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year Award.

Becker was nominated by Elizabeth Raff, PMSD K-12 learning facilitator. She was notified of her selection as a semifinalist on Feb. 17.

Becker studied education at Messiah University and received a middle-level education certification in social studies and science. She earned her master’s degree from Millersville University in curriculum design, instruction, and assessment, with a STEM certification.

Following graduation, she became a long-term substitute at Eshleman. In 2017, Becker joined the Eshleman Elementary School staff full time as a fifthgrade teacher.

Growing up, Becker had not always envisioned herself being a teacher. She thought she would go into the fields of marine biology, German, or archaeology, but she eventually chose education because it allowed her to remain a lifelong learner alongside her students.

Her favorite aspect of teaching is having a good rapport with her students. Becker thrives on meeting her students where they are and providing the accommodations they need to succeed in the classroom.

“Mrs. Becker is a very humble individual,” explained Dr. Mealy, Eshleman Elementary School

principal. “When we discussed the potential benefits of being a PA Teacher of the Year candidate, (Becker) was most excited about the networking that she could do to get new ideas to improve instruction and engagement for her students.”

With 28 students in her class, Becker implemented a “Genius Hour” this school year and plans to continue integrating it within her classes. During this time, students are encouraged to complete their own research on a project or topic they’re interested in.

Becker said, “I implemented Genius Hour for my class because I wanted to create learning experiences that make my students want to come to school and learn.”

Becker knew one student was passionate about dog grooming

Each Goddard School site is guided by principles called the Wonder of Learning. “Our curriculum is unique,” said Surapaneni. “It is inquiry-based, play-based, and child-led, and we encourage kids to explore their curiosity.”

She stated that The Goddard School emphasizes several components. “The first is dual management,” Surapaneni said. “The owner is on-site to help make sure everything runs smoothly. The second thing is the health and safety standards we practice on a regular basis. … The school is equipped with hospital-grade sanitization equipment to ensure a healthy environment.”

Every six months, a Goddard School representative makes an unannounced visit to ensure a location is following its guidelines.

“The third thing is professional education,” said Surapaneni, adding that teachers must meet state standards and that they also receive training from The Goddard School.

Parents who are interested in enrolling children in The Goddard School can visit www.goddard school.com or call the Lancaster location at 717-219-3310.

“Our goal is to get things up and running and make sure students are getting the best childhood education,” Surapaneni said.

The Goddard School of Lancaster opened on Jan. 10.

Church to Host Easter Sunrise Service, Breakfast

Four local United Methodist Church (UMC) congregations will host an Easter sunrise service and community breakfast on Sunday, April 5, at 7 a.m. A historic lime kiln near Safe Harbor United Methodist Church will provide the setting for this annual event; the kiln is intended to represent the empty tomb.

Speakers will include pastor Dave Ryan of Conestoga UMC,

pastor Jeff Miller of Highville UMC, pastor Kevin Kresge of Marticville UMC, and pastor Dominic Tuttle of Safe Harbor UMC. Kresge will also provide musical accompaniment.

The short service will be followed by a free, hot breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in Safe Harbor Church’s Carter Hall. Parking is available in the church parking lot, 3687 River

and airbrush tattoos will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m.

Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present a program at noon and will also have a booth set up all day for visitors to interact with some of the organization’s animals.

Mascots will also be on-site, including Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns.

“She’s a lot of fun for the kids,” Royal said. “They really like meeting her.”

Along with vendors, the fair will feature a program from Sam Leamer, a local historian who will offer a presentation sponsored by Visit Lebanon Valley from 9 to 10:50 a.m.

“In honor of the 250th birthday of America, we wanted to bring somebody in who can talk

about what life was like during Colonial times,” Royal said. At 1:15 p.m., Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation president Marci Mowery will speak.

“She’s going to talk about opportunities for families in our state parks,” Royal said. “She was a schoolteacher, so she makes her presentations relatable for kids.”

Food will be available for purchase at a restaurant on-site at the expo center.

“It’s the kind of food you would expect to have at a county fair,” Royal said, noting that the restaurant is set up cafeteria style and is located right across the hall from the travel fair.

Royal has been organizing the PA Family Travel Fair since 2018, although she had been thinking about the idea for several years before that.

“Over the years, I’ve always been astonished that we don’t know what’s going on in our own backyard,” she said. “There are so many cool things in our state that people just aren’t aware of.”

Tourism is big business in Pennsylvania. According to a 2024 economic impact study, the most recent study completed,

“Kids love this event because there’s always something fun to do. Parents love it because it’s free and they can get lots of information,” she said. “It’s just a fun day and an opportunity to find out things they didn’t know about what there is to do in our state.”

and suggested the student do some research during Genius Hour on what it entails to run a dog grooming business.

Throughout the year, the student conducted research, created and printed flyers and brochures, and began offering dog grooming to her neighbors and teachers.

One of the most important traits to Becker is being an educator who values feedback and reflection, which is something candidates going through the Teacher of the Year process receive.

Throughout the next few months, she will go through an extensive process to be in the running for the final round.

Each semifinalist must submit

a recorded lesson, with a video explaining the process of creating and delivering the lesson, and complete a phone interview to be considered as a finalist.

“What makes Mrs. Becker so special is that she is continually seeking to improve her practice. She is an exceptional educator, but she does not remain stagnant. I do have to say, that is something that happens often at Eshleman. Teachers are never satisfied with the status quo,” said Mealy.

In 2019, Penn Manor High School psychology teacher Maria Vita was selected as a finalist. Raff, who taught at Pequea Elementary prior to taking on the role of learning facilitator, was honored as the Teacher of the Year in 2022.
