Marching band booster club slates bingo fundraiser

The Penn Manor Marching Unit (PMMU) Booster Club will hold a bingo fundraiser on Saturday, April 20, in the cafeteria at Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Doors will open at noon, followed by an early bird game at 1:45 p.m. Standard rounds of bingo will begin at 2 p.m., and former WGAL sports anchor Mike Hostetler will call the numbers for each game.

Prizes for the regular bingo

games will include 10 designer purses and 10 YETI mugs. Each 30-ounce mug will contain a random amount of cash ranging from $50 to $200, which will be revealed when it is claimed by a player with a winning card.

Additional tickets will be available to purchase for multiple prize drawings during the event. The prize drawings will include items and gift baskets from various local businesses, such from Go ‘N Bananas Family Fun Center, Rocky Springs Bowling Alley, and

Fox Meadows Creamery. Other prizes will include a basket of Penn Manor school spirit accessories and an arrangement of gift cards from Ruby Tuesday, Olive Garden, Big Dog Craft Brewing, Harvey’s BBQ and other local eateries. Refreshments will be available to purchase at concession stands in the cafeteria.

Although the PMMU Booster Club has held an annual fundraiser for several years, this is the first time the group has organized a bingo event. The marching band

typically hosts a chicken barbecue fundraiser; Brian Pursel, president of the PMMU Booster Club, said the board decided to change the format of the event this year to engage more community members. “Our budget is roughly $40,000. We try to fundraise around $25,000 of that,” Pursel said. “The idea was to try having more high-impact events to generate the revenue needed for the marching band.”

The Millersville Woman’s Club will host its annual indoor garage sale on Saturday, April 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at Millersville Community Church, 163 W. Frederick St., and it will feature multiple vendors from the greater Penn Manor community.

Every year, members of the Millersville Woman’s Club have a table at the garage sale to speak with attendees and to provide information about the club’s various programs. Members will also sell a variety of items at the stand, as well as refreshments such as hot dogs, snacks and beverages.

The garage sale, which the Millersville Woman’s Club will host for the third consecutive year, typically features a book sale. This year, the club will incorporate a plant sale; members will sell flowers such as perennials in addition to other varieties of house plants.

The annual event was reintroduced by Millersville Woman’s Club member Mary Lehr, who serves as the chairman of the organization’s Ways and Means Committee. Lehr oversees the committee’s major fundraisers, which previously

included a dinner and dance at Millersville University. Safety concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic made the dance an inviable option, prompting Lehr to revive the Millersville Woman’s Club’s former tradition of hosting a garage sale. “The community reception has been great; people really look forward to it every year,” Lehr said.

Proceeds from the garage sale help the Millersville Woman’s Club continue its many initiatives aimed at strengthening the local community. The event is one of the group’s largest fundraisers, and it supports various philanthropic projects and educational support programs. The primary goal of the Millersville Woman’s Club is to focus on schools in the Penn Manor School District by funding scholarships and achievement awards for graduating high school seniors and students at the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center. The organization also sponsors a sophomore at Penn Manor High School to attend the annual

“The club has supported local schools since it was founded in 1957,” said Lehr. “Supporting schools and children has always been important to us - that’s our future.” Many Millersville Woman’s Club members are educators, including former Penn Manor High School principal Jan Mindish. In addition to supporting schools in Penn Manor School District, the organization aids local nonprofits such as Loft Community Partnership and the Power Packs Project.

Fundraiser for Premiere Danse Academy’s Premiere TEAM will host a bingo fundraiser on Sunday, April 7, at Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville. Doors will open at noon, and bingo will begin at 1 p.m. Yeti products will be given as prizes. The event will include 20 games, blackout games, and giveaway drawing baskets. Church to host Easter sunrise service, breakfast

Safe Harbor United Methodist Church (UMC) will host an Easter sunrise service and community breakfast on Easter Sunday, March 31, at 7 a.m.

An historic lime kiln near the church, which looks like the open mouth of a tomb, will provide the dramatic setting for the annual event. Participants from previous years have reported that gathering by the “empty tomb” in the crisp morning air helps make the message of Christ’s resurrection come alive.

An “empty tomb” will welcome Easter worshippers at Safe Harbor Church.

Music and a short service will be followed by a free community breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the church’s Carter Hall. Parking will be available in the Safe Harbor Church parking lot at 3687 River Road, Conestoga (near Safe Harbor Park).

The Rev. Dominic Tuttle, the new pastor of Safe Harbor UMC, will officiate, along with the Rev. Dave Ryan, Conestoga UMC; Pastor Jeff Miller, Highville UMC; and Pastor Kevin Kresge, Marticville UMC. Kresge will provide special music.

Longtime duck hunter Alan Dinkel of Columbia has donated a sneak boat for display at the Blue Rock Heritage Center.

The broad expanse of the Susquehanna River with its shallow islands located near Washington Boro is a perfect habitat for ducks and geese. Since the times of the early Native Americans, this area has been a prime hunting spot for migratory fowl.

A sneak boat was used to hunt in the open water or to be anchored near a small island. The boat could be camouflaged, and many times rowed and not propelled by a motor. In addition to traditional oars located on either side of the boat, a special oar was in the rear of the boat. This oar would project from the rear of the boat and would allow hunters to sneak closer to the

prey which would be attracted to the decoys deployed nearby. The ducks and geese could not see the movement of the rear oar.

Dinkel owned the boat for 42 years after purchasing it from the widow of Jake Mowery. The boat was one of three made in the 1940s or early 1950s by Charlie Lucas of Columbia. It is the last surviving boat made by Lucas. Alan’s grandfather was August Dinkel, who operated a butcher shop in Washington Boro, and Alan’s father, Ed, was the last to operate the butcher shop until its closing in the mid 1970s.

The boat is on display at the Wittmer barn at the Blue Rock Heritage Center, 2251 River Road, Washington Boro. The Blue Rock Heritage Center is grateful to Dinkel for his generosity allowing the heritage center to showcase a boat used in the traditional way of hunting waterfowl.

The dates for the Blue Rock Heritage Center to be open in 2024 are: Sundays, May 19; June 2 and 23; July 14 and 28; Aug. 11 and 25; Sept. 8 and 22; and Oct. 13. Hours are from 1 to 4 p.m. each day. Group tours may be scheduled by contacting Charlie Douts at 717-719-3008.
