Raven Ridge Wildlife Center’s second annual Baby Wildlife Shower will be bigger and better than the inaugural event, director Tracie Young said.
The baby shower will be held Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. There is no admission fee, and everyone is welcome.
There will be face painting and a photo booth, crafts, games, food trucks, and a flower truck,
as well as merchandise for sale.
“We will have lots of neat, unique things,” Young said.
Dragon Wings Falconry will bring birds. For a donation, attendees can hold an owl on their gloved hand. Young will bring some of Raven Ridge’s wildlife and is also promising a special surprise visitor.
Kids will be able to “adopt” a stuffed animal that comes with a crate, blanket, and certificate of adoption.
Last year’s baby shower attracted more than 500 visitors.
“We knew some people were
going to show up, but we had no idea how many,” said Young. “This year is going to be even bigger.”
Young will give presentations, telling people what to do and what not to do if they find a baby animal.
Keeping with the baby shower theme, Raven Ridge has a wish list on Amazon, and there will be tables to place gifts on at the shower.
“Baby season is one of our most expensive times of the year, because everything is having babies,” Young said. “If a mom skunk gets hit by a car, there

Fashion trends are always changing, but helping people never goes out of style for the Pilot Club of Lancaster.
The Pilot Club will hold its annual Derby Day Fashion Show & Luncheon on Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Palm Court at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster.
Mainstream Boutique will bring the latest fashions, which will be worn by volunteer models. The luncheon will include soup and salad, bread and butter, dessert, coffee, and iced tea.
There is a cost to attend. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the group on Facebook by searching for “Pilot Club of Lancaster.”
Entertainment will be provided by Adriano, a one-man band playing an organ and
singing songs performed by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and others.
There will be chances to win items and a hat contest for ladies. “Wear your most outlandish Derby hat to win a prize,” Pilot Club president Kelly Osborne said.

It’s really all about providing opportunities for girls and young women. The Lancaster Inferno motivates females to take advantage of opportunities and to make the most of them.
For the Inferno, soccer is more than a game; it’s a transformational tool.
“Our goal is to empower these girls and women and use soccer as a platform for the development and growth,” said
Stephanie Cleaves, executive director of the Lancaster Inferno and the head coach of the club’s first team. “Eighty percent of female CEOs played sports. It’s our goal to develop not just the athletes but the individuals as future leaders and to build confidence. Having female role models is very important to that.”
Headquartered at Pod 2 in Rock Lititz, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., the Lancaster Inferno and the Lancaster Inferno Football
All proceeds will benefit the organization’s community service projects, said Osborne.
The Pilot Club was chartered in Lancaster in 1947. “We are a nonprofit community service club,” Osborne said. “We’re similar to the Rotary Club or the Lions Club. Our motto is ‘Friendship and Service.’”
The group launched the local Meals on Wheels program in 1967. Meals on Wheels grew to become a separate nonprofit, but the Pilot Club still makes monetary donations, and some members volunteer to deliver meals.
All men and women are welcome to join the Pilot Club. The Lancaster chapter’s membership currently consists of 37 women.
The Pilot Club meets at 5:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at Lancaster Tennis & Yacht Club, 2615 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Guests are welcome to attend to see how the club operates, Osborne said.
The Pilot Club’s signature community service initiative is Project Lifesaver of Lancaster County, a group near and dear to Osborne.
Project Lifesaver is a searchand-rescue program for people who wander away from home due to a cognitive issue such as dementia or autism, Osborne said.
West Hempfield Police Department was the first department to embrace the program when it began in 2012. Since then, Project Lifesaver has added 22 police departments as full or associate members to become a countywide organization that includes Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency (LEMA) and Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Troop J Lancaster.
a Project Lifesaver client was visiting Lancaster County. When Osborne returned the message, she said she got chills.
“I knew right then and there it was my mission to search for information on Project Lifesaver and bring it to Troop J Lancaster as a tribute to my dad,” she said.
Osborne connected with the Pilot Club in 2019, joined two years later, and is now finishing the first year of a two-year term as the group’s president. She acquired funding and cut through red tape to bring Project Lifesaver to Troop J.
The Pilot Club helps fund the purchase of equipment and training of police officers and handles client enrollment and battery maintenance.
LEMA and police agencies maintain search-and-rescue equipment, keep officers proficient with the training, and do the search-and-rescue missions when needed.
“We count on this money to continue to fund Project Lifesaver of Lancaster County to purchase transmitters and equipment for our police departments,” Osborne said.
Here’s how Project Lifesaver works: Families who have loved ones with a cognitive condition and fear that person could get lost may contact Cathy Cieslinski of the Pilot Club at 717-5722682 or go to www.pilotclubof lancaster.org.
Osborne, who retired from her job as a state trooper in January of 2023, had never heard of Project Lifesaver until 2019. Her father, Courtney, who had dementia, wandered away from an assisted living facility in Lancaster Township in October of 2019 and was found dead.
Serendipitously, days earlier, a sheriff from New Jersey had called Osborne to notify the PSP
The Pilot Club fits clients with a transmitter on either an ankle or a wrist. There is a specific frequency assigned to each transmitter. Should the client go missing, the caregiver is instructed to call 911, and then trained personnel go out with a receiver in search of the missing person. “It’s archaic technology but tried and true,” Osborne said. She added that Project Lifesaver has reduced search-and-rescue time from an average of about nine hours to an average of 30 minutes or less.
There is a cost associated with each transmitter and the equipment that goes with it, but the Pilot Club provides scholarship opportunities for those in need so that no one is turned away.
The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group will accept proposals for the next round of its “green project” grants through Monday, March 31. Any Lancaster County 501(c)(3) organization with a project that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness and improves green infrastructure is eligible to apply for a grant. The program annually awards grants of up to $500 to charitable, educational or business 501(c)(3) groups that demonstrate a commitment
to the Sierra Club’s mission of “exploring, enjoying and protecting the planet” in Lancaster County. When applying for a grant, organizations should consider how their projects relate to an ecological preservation or educational effort. Projects may focus on topics such as storm water management, rain gardens and rain barrels; native plantings; pollinator plants; organic gardens; composting programs; or hands-on learning. The Lancaster Group will

Pequea Church, 40 Church Road, Lancaster, will host a GriefShare program on Wednesdays, April 2 to June 4. All sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The program is for people who have experienced the loss of a loved one.
The material is biblically based and seeks to offer resources and support. Topics will include what to expect in times of grieving and ways to cope with grief.
Each meeting will include a video featuring counselors, pastors, and health care professionals, followed by small-group discussion. All attendees will receive a workbook to take home.
The program is free of charge.

The program revolves around a series of competitive and instructional age-group teams, each more
than its predecessor.
There are financial fees associated with each level of the Lancaster Inferno academy.
“When it was initially launched, we wanted to provide a place for high-level talent to play,” said Cleaves. “That evolved into wanting to have a feeder system for the top teams. We felt like there was a need to create a club that was all girls, making female athletes the top pursuit. Girls drop out of athletics at age 14 at twice the rate of boys. We’re trying to buck that trend.”
About 245 female athletes from all over Lancaster and Lebanon counties, ages 9 to 36, populate the Lancaster Inferno academy’s 12 teams - two highly competitive pre-professional teams and 10 youth teams. Some of the older players are former college and local high school stars, some are current high school players, some play soccer with other teams during other seasons and some are relative newcomers just starting

The Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth teams practice at Spooky Nook Sports Complex and play some of their games at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex. Cleaves’ first team, which is made up of the program’s most advanced and competitive players, will be playing five home games at Penn Medicine Park, the Lancaster Stormers’ home stadium, during the 2025 season after calling Warwick High School home last year.
“They are serious players who want to take their games to the next level,” said Cleaves of the first team members. “They’re also players who want to be keep playing at a high level. It’s usually players who see themselves playing professionally; that’s who’s on our first team. We kind of fill that gap between college and pros.”
Many of the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth programs are year-round ventures with games contested during the spring and fall seasons. The Lancaster Inferno first team plays a 10-game regular season schedule in the pre-professional United Soccer League (USL) W League from May to July.
“We’re really big on professionalism, just how we run things. We take pride in how we run it,” said

the awardees will be posted at www.lancastersierraclub.org.
The grant program has been supported by funds raised primarily through the Lancaster Group’s Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/ Hikes and from funds received through its participation in Lancaster’s annual ExtraGive. For additional details, contact Jim Meenan at 717-475-0586 or at jimsmeenan@gmail.com.
Cleaves. “We’re a team for the community. When I tell that to players, it excites them. (The older players) want to be role models. It’s our goal not only to attract the best players, but also to develop them.”
Cleaves and her family purchased the franchise that would become the Lancaster Inferno in 2014. Six years later, the Lancaster Inferno founded an under-23 women’s premier team, and in 2022, the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth program was launched.
“My favorite part is seeing the young players interact with the senior team players,” said Cleaves,
a resident of Lititz. “They look starstruck, like, ‘That could be me some day.’ It really impacts you.”
“Seeing that there’s exciting opportunities is huge,” continued Cleaves. “(Players are) learning from experienced coaches. Some could go on to be professional players or coaches or referees. It’s about developing them as confident individuals in life. It teaches them life lessons and about the spirit of soccer. We want to make it an option if they want to play at a higher level.”

Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, which is located in Washington Boro, is a registered nonprofit that does not receive any federal, state, or local funding. “We need to find creative ways of getting funding so we can keep doing what we do,” said Young. “We can only do it with the community’s support.”
The center specializes in birds of prey. “We rehabilitate injured, orphaned, and abandoned wildlife,” Young said. “Our goal is to get them back out in their environment.”
Raven Ridge will celebrate its 10th anniversary in May. It covers 17 counties. “We are also one of 13 centers licensed in the state to work with rabies vector species,” said
People have driven three hours one way to bring in an injured animal, said Young. The center’s 45 volunteers are trained to do everything, which comes in handy in the spring. “When the babies start coming in, we will have three shifts because a lot of these animals need round-the-clock feeding,”Young said.
Young was unsure what she was getting into 15 years ago when she was inspired to become involved in wildlife rehabilitation following the Horizon oil spill in April of 2010, which was caused by a drilling rig exploding and sinking in the Gulf of Mexico.
“I wanted to go down and help clean,” she said. “I got on the waiting list, and then Horizon called me back and said the only people allowed down there were wildlife rehabilitators. I didn’t know what a
wildlife rehabilitator was. That kind of got the ball rolling.”
Young said Pennsylvania is one of the most difficult states in which to be licensed. She volunteered at a center and worked alongside a rehabilitator to gain firsthand experience prior to taking the necessary exams through the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
She enjoys the unpredictability of the work. “Every day is different,” Young said. “You don’t know what’s coming in. You don’t know what challenges will come through our door.”
For more information about Raven Ridge Wildlife Center and the baby shower, search for “Raven Ridge Wildlife Center” on Facebook or go to https://ravenridgewildlife center.org.
“It’s not for everybody,” Young said. “It’s seven days a week, 365 days a year. With wildlife emergencies, you’re pretty much on call all the time.”
Researchers at Temple University are looking for participants for a study. They are seeking families
that drink water from a private well, have a child under the age of 4, and live in specific geographical areas, including locations in southcentral Pennsylvania. The one-year study will explore the effects of well water on children’s health.
Families can participate from home. They will receive a free whole-home ultraviolet water treatment system. Participants will also receive gift cards and a chance to win a family trip to Hersheypark. Those who are not eligible may receive a cash reward for referring others.
For more information, visit www.wettrial.org, call 215-204-5124, or email wettrial@temple. edu. The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
