Troop PA-3125 posts craft show

On Saturday, April 1, American Heritage Girls Troop PA-3125 will hold a craft show at the Solanco Fairgrounds, Park Avenue, Quarryville. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Kreider Building and will be free to attend.

A piece of

OnFeb. 27, Radwa Matar of Millersville officially opened the doors to Koshary Station, located at 4 S. Prince St., Millersville. The restaurant serves traditional dishes from Matar’s native country of Egypt and marks the beginning of a new chapter in her career in the food industry.

The restaurant’s main dish is koshary, a popular Middle Eastern street food that consists of pasta, rice, lentils, chickpeas, spiced tomato sauce and caramelized onions. Matar had tossed around the idea of starting her own restaurant and serving traditional cuisine from her home country since she first came to Lancaster in 2006. She gained experience while working in catering and commercial kitchens and worked in the cafeteria for Hempfield School District for several years while she lived in

West Lancaster. Part of Matar’s vision of the restaurant was born from her struggles with acclimating to a different culture and missing her hometown and family, most of whom still live there. She also noticed that few, if any, restaurants in the area offer specifically Egyptian food. Matar still visits her family in Egypt every two years, and regular video calls with family members allow her to stay connected with them, but being able to offer a part of her culture to the community has also helped her to abate feelings of homesickness.

Matar’s husband, Mohamed Ibrahim, came to the United States in 2000 and found work as a machine operator for Kellogg’s. He returned to Egypt, where he and Matar were married, and the couple moved to Lancaster together. Matar and Ibrahim moved to Millersville three years ago. Matar finally decided to realize her dream of opening a

restaurant after leaving her position in a school cafeteria last year. “It’s been my plan for a while,” Matar said. “I was looking for the right place for a restaurant. It was a gift to find something so close to where I live.”

Although the task of starting one’s own business is daunting, Matar said that she is confident that she has the skills she needs to ensure Koshary Station’s success. In addition to working in restaurants and cafeterias, Matar used to participate in Taste of the World in Lancaster city, where she and other Middle Eastern women would gather to prepare and serve dishes from their native countries.

“I gained so much experience in the industry. You get to know how a business is run and how to work with food,” said Matar. “I used to serve over 300 children a day when I worked in a cafeteria and learned so much about serving people.”

The craft show will feature a mix of vendors and crafters, who will sell a variety of items, many of which will be spring or Easter themed. Items such as spring décor, Easter baskets, jewelry, wreaths and wooden crafts will be sold at the event, and all proceeds will benefit Troop PA-3125. The troop will operate a booth to offer informational materials to attendees, and food will be available to purchase from the Fry Shack food truck. The event will also include a prize drawing for multiple items donated by participating crafters and local businesses.

The Pioneers and Patriots groups of Troop PA-3125, which together comprise the girls in the troop between the ages of 12 and 16, are organizing the event with the help of volunteer Danielle Worrell. Worrell, whose daughter is a member of Troop PA-3125,

“Shrek The Musical” celebrates our differences

“This show is about acceptance,” said Landon Hunsicker, describing “Shrek The Musical.” “Shrek is an ogre, and everyone assumes he’s mean, but the show gives him the opportunity to show what’s inside him and help him connect with the other characters.”

“Shrek The Musical” will be performed by Encore! Home School Productions at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 2. It will be performed at The Junction Center,

1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

“The cast has worked really hard on this show,” noted Landon, who portrays Donkey. “We started rehearsing in November. It’s a really fun show, and it’s different than the movie version of ‘Shrek.’ It adds to that original story.”

“Shrek The Musical” tells the story of the title character, Shrek, portrayed by Seth Snyder, who becomes an unlikely hero as he takes a journey to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona, played by Emily Norcott as an adult, Grace Richey as a teen and Cambria Brinton as a

young child. Full of fairy-tale characters, the show is a family-friendly story of friendship, love, community and uniqueness. As Pinocchio, played by Giselle Bartlett, says in the show, “What makes us special makes us strong.”

The production will feature a cast of 40 students from across the central Pennsylvania region. Students live in the school districts of Hempfield, Elizabethtown Area, Penn Manor, Donegal, Lancaster, Susquenita, Bermudian Springs, Camp Hill, AnnvilleCleona, Central Dauphin, Lower Dauphin, Cumberland Valley, West Shore, Derry Township, East Pennsboro, Susquehanna Township and Middletown Area.

“Community is a big theme of this show,” said Callaghan Petrosky, who plays Lord Farquaad. “It’s about being comfortable with who you are and having a place in a bigger community.”

The large cast of actors don elaborate costumes, including fur suits and prosthetics, and for some of the actors, it’s been a unique challenge. “I wear a fur suit and I have hooves on my hands, so I’ve been practicing with them,” Landon stated. For Callaghan, his character is extremely short, requiring him to act on his knees. “I wear a long cape and have knee pads, and then I have fake legs attached to the pads,” he said. Gingy, played by Ella McKell, works

with a puppet throughout the show, and Dragon, portrayed by Lily Patota, wears a large headpiece and maneuvers the stage with a giant tail.

Costumes, props, sets, playbills, advertising, concessions and more are coordinated by families, who contribute their time and talents to the production, said Tammy Bartlett, public relations lead. “It takes a community to produce a show,” she stated.

Encore! Home School Productions is a nonprofit organization that offers performing arts opportunities to homeschool and cyber school students in central Pennsylvania. A Christian organization, it focuses on providing students with a positive, challenging and educational experience, presenting high-quality live theater to the public.

“Shrek The Musical” is directed by Dena McKell, with Coleen Steindel as the music director. The show is produced by Ann Snyder.

To purchase tickets for “Shrek The Musical,” visit www.encorehsp.org or call 717-459-3701. Online sales will close three hours before show time. Tickets will be available at the door.

introduced the idea to hold the group’s first craft show due to her experience in planning other shows in the past. The girls in the troop have assisted by creating a Facebook page for the event, plotting where each vendor will be stationed, creating a flyer and designing yard signs. Each troop member will earn an entrepreneurial badge for her efforts with planning the function. Worrell and the troop’s leader, Kaitlynn Yetder, hope to make the craft show an annual fundraiser.

The funds raised from the craft show will help the troop to acquire camping equip-

ment such as tents for its trips, as well as lower the cost for girls to participate in the program. The profits from the event will also be used to cover the cost of Troop PA3125’s regular outings such as trips to the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster city and local zoos.

American Heritage Girls is a faith-based scouting program that was founded in 1995. Troop PA-3125 was created in 2019 and meets on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. “Our mission is to build women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country,” said Yetder. “We teach different life

skills and do various activities and fun outings for the girls.”

The troop regularly assists with projects that serve the community, such as Blessings of Hope and Operation Christmas Child. Last year, the older girls organized a baby shower and donated the collected items to women in need.

“It’s helped my daughter to be proud of who she is and who God made her to be,” said Worrell. “As a parent, I’ve seen her grow as well as enjoy the camping, hiking and fishing trips.”

Matar noted that she was only able to open Koshary Station with the help and support of those in her life. Although Ibrahim works full time, he often steps in to help with the business. When Matar first started to plan for her business, she was encouraged by her friends Zaenab, Riham and Marwa, who helped with organization, prepping the food and lending her their cars to move into the new building. added that she is also grateful for the support provided by her friends Mohamed, Yasser, Tamer, Bouchra and Nisreen.

“Without my friends, I couldn’t have done it. I’m so blessed to have them,” Matar said. Despite the difficulty of starting a business from scratch, Matar is confident that she will build on her experience as a new business owner.

Garner becomes owner/broker at Life Changes Realty

Real estate agent turned broker Brittany Garner became the new owner of Life Changes Realty Group on Jan. 1 and the broker of record on Feb. 10. She and her team aim to give back $1 million to local nonprofit organizations chosen by their clients through Life Changes

Realty Group’s Pay-It-Forward program, which donates 10% of Life Changes’ commissions on every home sale.

Garner noted that one client chose to donate to Dance Wheels, whose mission is teaching people who are non-ambulatory to dance with people with and without physical disabilities. She also recounted stories of homebuyers who wanted to give back to organizations that had helped their loved ones at the end of life.

Under the direction of founder Naomi Fredlund of Elizabethtown, the company has already donated $728,339 to its clients’ choice of charities over the past 12 years. Fredlund will remain an associate broker.

Life Changes has its main office in Lancaster and a branch office in Elizabethtown, and it is looking to expand to the West Shore. Life Changes serves all of Lancaster and the surrounding counties, including Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin and York.

Garner is taking the reigns of a company that has helped buy and sell more than 1,811 homes and donated to nearly 500 charities. With 12 real estate agents on the team, Garner hopes to grow that number to include even more people

Alumni invited to celebration

The Colerain Alumni Association will hold its annual meeting and banquet on Saturday, April 29, at the Bart Township Fire Company, 11 Furnace Road, Quarryville. The reunion is open to anyone who attended Colerain schools and graduated from Colerain or Solanco High School.

The Colerain Alumni Association is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The organization was established as a means for graduates of what was then Colerain High School to get together for reunions. 2023 will be the 98th meeting, as reunions were not held in 1943 due to World War II and during COVID. The 50year class is honored at each gathering, so the Class of 1973 will be recognized this year.

Dick Sware, immediate past district governor for Lancaster and Lebanon County Lions Clubs, recently recognized several Willow Street Lions Club members for their service.

Sharon Grager, Jeanie Sware and Second Vice District Governor Deb Keeports each received a Lions of Pennsylvania Fellowship Award. This organization’s mission includes assisting those with sensory impairment, particularly those with vision and hearing deficits.

Past District Governor Bill Grager and Lions member Lori Eshleman were recognized with a brick in their name, which will be on display at Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp located in Mount Union. Owned by the Penn-

sylvania Lions, the camp is for individuals with special needs.

Grager was also presented with an award through Leader Dogs for the Blind. This organization, located in Rochester, Mich., and founded in 1939 by several Lions Club members, has matched and graduated over 13,000 person and dog teams since its inception.

Anyone who would like more information about the Willow Street Lions Club is invited to attend one of the club’s meetings, which are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. at the Willow Street Lions Community Building at 1730 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Readers may also search for the club on Facebook.
