Millersville photographer wins an award in her first contest

Addelyn Brown has a perfect record as an aspiring photographer.

Addelyn, a seventh-grader at Marticville Middle School, won an award in the first contest she entered.

The Millersville resident captured the People’s Choice firstplace award in the Young Photographers (ages 12 to 17) category of the “Leap In” contest organized by the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF). The People’s Choice award is based off a popular vote from a collection of photos the foundation puts on social media.

“I was happy and proud,” Addelyn said.

The subject of Addelyn’s winning photograph was a log covered with moss, taken with an iPhone during a family trip to Ricketts

Glen State Park. “We were hiking, and we were coming back,” she said. “I saw a log and thought it was pretty, so I thought I could take a picture of it. I tried to get the right angle.”

Addelyn’s mom, Jessica, said, “We had taken notice of the contest, and while we were there, she had taken a couple pictures, and we took one and submitted it. She has a cool way of finding angles I would never think of. We got home and looked at the pictures, and I thought that one was really cool. Addie chose that one to submit.”

Equally adept with an iPhone or her Nikon, Addelyn said she takes photographs because “it’s fun.”

She started the hobby when she was 8 years old at the suggestion of an online program called Xello she used at school. Xello helps students explore careers, develop

Local musician has big dreams IU13 conference slated for June 12

The 29th annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 Education Conference will be held Thursday, June 12, at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.

“We want people to be aware of what we offer, but we also want to give them evidence-based practices to use with students,” said Chanda Telleen, who is an associate program director and supervisor of the training

and consultation team for the IU13. “People are coming to our conference as a way to enhance their professional learning. We have presenters from our partner PaTTAN (Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network). We have presenters from institutes of higher education. We have practitioners presenting. We try to expose our audience to the latest evidence-based practices to support our students.”

It’s a familiar refrain.

A mom makes her reluctant child take piano lessons.

That’s how Adrian Eschenwald started his musical career, and he has no plans of stopping.

Eschenwald’s solo project he calls No Demo will help headline a show Friday, March 28, at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 8. Fuzztide Jones and Taylor Zeager are also on the bill. Tickets are available on www.eventbrite .com by searching for “Phantom

Power” and will be sold at the door.

Phantom Power has a setup similar to the legendary Chameleon Club in Lancaster that is now closed, said Eschenwald, a Hempfield High School graduate who previously worked as a writer for Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. “It’s a pretty cool venue,” he said.

Eschenwald mostly performs original songs he wrote while playing a guitar or piano. He can also play the drums but does not currently have a kit.

skills and knowledge, and plan for future success. “You can learn what career could be good for you, and it said photography on there for me,” Addelyn said.

Addelyn practices her photography on her favorite subjects: sunsets; friends; her younger sister, Norah; and the family boxer, Penny. She and her family, including her dad, Nevin, enjoy visiting local parks and conservancies.

Addelyn took a photography class at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design last summer and is planning to study photo editing this year. She is looking forward to taking more classes when she gets to high school.

“Dreams & Fears,” the latest collection of work to come from local artist Sterling Keesey, is now being featured at Mulberry Art Studios. A First Friday opening reception was held on March 7, and the show will be on display for the entirety of the month.

Although a career choice is many years away, Addelyn is thinking about becoming a portrait photographer. “I want to be a people photographer because I like taking pictures of people,” she said. Jessica added, “I think she likes posing people and finding the right landscape.”

Addelyn also enjoys field hockey, lacrosse, drawing, and babysitting.

“I’m glad she has a hobby that she loves,” Jessica said. “She plays sports a lot. She has school. I’m glad she has something more artistic to round that out. I loved art and drawing growing up, so it’s cool she has her own element in that way.”

Addelyn’s winning photograph will hang in the East Wing Rotunda of the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building throughout April.

The 2025 PPFF photo

contest is now open to adults and children. This year’s theme focuses on Pennsylvania’s love of trails. Categories include Beyond the Trail, Camaraderie on the Trail, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Tales From the Trail, Texture of the Trail, and Young Photographers (12 to 17). For information on categories, rules, and submitting photos, visit https://paparksandforests .org/our-work/recreation/ photo-contest/.

“The annual photo contest not only demonstrates the beauty and history of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests, it demonstrates people’s connections to these special places,” said Marci Mowery, who is the president of the PPFF.”We applaud the photographers for capturing the images, and we applaud the leaders who had the foresight to conserve these special places for today and generations to come.”

Keesey works in oil and acrylic, with a style that is both surreal and impressionistic. He stated that his surreal art is based on his dreams and fears, while his impressionism works are mainly from plein air painting.

For the past eight years, Keesey has been working and perfecting his craft as an artist. Formerly a construction worker, he made the decision to go for his dreams and passions as an artist, showing his work in several York and Harrisburg spaces.

Following Keesey’s exhibit, Joanne Young Stephan will bring her

collection of artwork to Mulberry Art Studios in April for her “Retrospective” exhibit. The show will open with a First Friday reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 4 and will remain on display for the entirety of April. Stephan is a graphic artist specializing in the lettering arts, with more than 35 years experience in advertising, calligraphy, illustration and painting. She is a graduate of Pennsylvania School of Art & Design. Stephan works in water

breakfast will run from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m., followed by a welcome and opening remarks. Participants should bring confirmation of registration. Room assignments and the conference day agenda will be available.

At 8:40 a.m., keynote speaker Nikole Hollins-Sims will deliver her presentation, “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes - Building Belonging From Birth On.”

Hollins-Sims is an internationally recognized speaker, author, and educational consultant specializing in equity and positive behavior interventions. She is the senior consultant for Hollins-Sims Consultation and has held roles such as technical assistance coordinator for the Midwest Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Network and special assistant to the secretary of education at the Pennsylvania Department of Education. A Pennsylvania-certified school psychologist, she has researched family-school partnerships, particularly involving caregivers of children with incarcerated parents. She is the lead author of “Creating Equitable Practices in PBIS.”

There will be sessions for participants to break into smaller groups during the morning and afternoon. Participants should preregister for one morning session (10 a.m. to noon) and one afternoon session (1 to 3 p.m.).

“We do have specific presentations that we think might be interesting to a specific group,” Telleen said. “We have certain sessions that we think might be interesting to nurses or to parents.”

The final activity will run from 3 to 3:30 p.m., when attendees will be able to complete evalua tions and visit sponsors’ tables.

“The conference is open to everyone. From parents to superinten dents, we invite you to come,” said Telleen. “We invite teachers, special education teachers, and administrators to come to our conference. We have a wide range of topics.”

tration is required for both morning and afternoon breakout sessions, but not the keynote speech. The registration deadline is Friday, May 23.

“We want people to register early and get the early-bird discount,” said Telleen. “We want to get as many people there as possible, but space is limited to approximately 400 people. We’d like to get our registration in as early as possible.”

Telleen said the IU13 is thankful for support from vendors and business sponsors. The conference will also serve as a recruitment tool. “We are highlighting some students,” Telleen said. “There are some interns who will be at our conference. This is another opportunity for us to attract young people to the field of education and specifically working with students with disabilities.”

She noted the importance of interesting young people in teaching to address teacher shortages.

The IU13 supports students with disabilities from birth to graduation and beyond, Telleen said. “We work with families. We work with our 22 member districts to provide training and technical assistance and special programming for students with disabili

ties,” she added.

There is a wide variety of programs that offer support. “My team offers training and technical assistance,” said Telleen. “We do go out to the various districts, but we also host training or job groups here at Burle (Corporate Park) in our conference center. We also have programs within

students with multiple disabilities or autism.”

started performing music five years ago, Eschenwald now plays as No Demo, a nod to the movie “A Ghost Story.” “It’s a movie about a lost soul wandering around before he goes to the afterlife,” he said. There is a scene with a ghost in a parking garage with the words “No Demo” written in graffiti, which Eschenwald assumes to be an abbreviation for “No Demolition.”

said. “Then, after a couple years, it became my favorite thing ever.” He learned how to play the guitar five years later.

He is grateful his mother, Ella, insisted he learn to play the piano. “She’s been an absolute inspiration for me, and I owe my relationship with music to her,” he said. “My mom taught me the importance of connecting with art and keeping my heart open to the magic in the world.(She) and my dad (Adolfo) are two of my biggest supporters.”

The Penn Manor sixth-grade basketball team captured the Lancaster-Lebanon Youth Travel League championship on March 7 by defeating Garden Spot, 29-11, at Spooky Nook. The Comets opened the tournament with a 43-13 win over Lancaster Mennonite School on March 3 and topped Lampeter-Strasburg 25-7 in the semifinals March 5. Members of the team include (front, from left) Micah Horting, Ella Swanson, Isabella Butler, Elsie Hoffman, Arabella Bowers, Avery Nissley, (middle row) Emerald Davis, Kara Becker, Zoey Fisher, and Emme Thompson. They are coached by (back) Jennifer Probst, Jess Swanson, and Kelly Stigelman.

Toddler Gym and preschool tours set

Preschool Express at Millersville Community Church, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville, will offer Toddler Gym and preschool tours on Fridays, March 21, April 4, and April 11.

Toddler Gym will be held from 9:30 to 10:30

a.m., with tours following until 11:30 a.m. The programs are for children birth to age 5 with a parent or guardian. Toddler Gym on March 21 will be a celebration of spring.

“The phrase was bouncing around in my head,” Eschenwald said. “It’s a degree of separation. I write songs about personal things, and this adds a layer of abstraction to it. I guess it’s a paradox. It’s a vulnerable thing to write a piece of music and play something that is emotionally significant to you, but also, I want to be a little disconnected from it.”

He characterizes his music as “spinless reverb rock” based off a comment written under one of his YouTube videos. Someone wrote, “Oh great. More spinless reverb rock. Do something new.” Instead of getting upset, Eschenwald leaned into it. “It’s kind of a joke, but I also felt like it described the music really well,” he said. “It was intended to be mean, but I really liked that.”

The lyrics are inspired by his emotions. “I’m only inclined to write a song when I’m feeling a lot of things,” said Eschenwald.

“It’s usually not a conscious thing where I think I will just sit down and write a song.”

Putting pen to paper helps him deal with those feelings.

He dreams of turning his hobby into a profession. “That’s something I want to check out,” he said. “I’d love to just be able to do that, but whatever I am doing, I’m going to be writing and recording music. I don’t see it going away. If it paid all my bills, that would be sick.”

He realizes he needs to boost his social media presence. Eschenwald’s music can be heard by searching for “No Demo” on Spotify. His Instagram account is @ nodemolition. It’s no longer necessary for acts to sign with a record label to gain popularity outside of the local music scene. “If you have a MacBook and $40, you can distribute your music,” he said.

The downside is there is no barrier to entry since it’s so easy to put music out there. “It is a great thing that it’s not gate-kept,” he said. “But also, now it’s saturated with people who have music (online).”

For information about the preschool’s classes and aftercare options, contact Amy Sue Deihl at 717-3332317 or preschool @gracemillersville.org. To schedule tours, call 717-872-9639 or visit https://gracepreschool express.com/ and fill out the interest form near the bottom of the homepage.

“It’s cathartic,” he said. “I think it’s also very validating in a way. It could be any range of emotion. I think I gravitate toward a lot of sad stuff for whatever reason, but it could be feeling any emotion like when good things are happening.”

Piano is his favorite instrument, having started playing when he was 7 years old. “I remember being really mad about because I didn’t really want to do it,” Eschenwald

People he trusts have advised him to take his music on the road. “My friends who are active and putting a lot into it say the name of the game is touring and physically bringing your music other places,” said Eschenwald, who mostly plays in central Pennsylvania but has made short tours into New England. “It’s funny because people always talk about how terrible touring is. I haven’t really toured yet, so I need to find out for myself, at least once.”

Eschenwald added, “That way, I will know I gave it a shot. If it doesn’t work out, I will just go back in my room and write another album. I will keep doing it. It can get discouraging. Obviously, I want to be doing it full time, but either way I’m still going to be doing it and trying to get better.”

Culinary creativity meets compassion

“Get ready for a night of sizzling excitement and paw-some fun!” said Tammy L. Jalbert, executive director of Columbia Animal Shelter. “Join us at Chopped for Charity to benefit the Columbia Animal Shelter - where culinary creativity meets compassion!”

The second annual Chopped for Charity will be held on Saturday, March 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Country Barn Farm Market, 211 S. Donerville Road, Lancaster.

Modeled after the Food Network show “Chopped,” the event challenges participants to create a dish using ingredients from a mystery box. Contestants may also use additional items from a shared pantry, but each dish must prominently feature all of the mystery ingredients.

The chefs competing this year are Ethan Greer, Chef M and Javan Small. Greer is a restaurateur native to York County. He founded Taqueria El Camino, a Latin restaurant located in Dover, in 2020. He also operates three locations of Greer’s Burger Garage and is the co-owner of The Franklin Street Social in Red Lion.

Chef M (also known as chef Michelle Andrews) has a passion for global flavors and traditions. She specializes in private dining, customized meal plans and culinary education. After attending culinary school in Colorado, she opened her own business serving York

Playhouse plans fundraising gala

GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s An Evening Under the Sea Fundraising Gala will take place on Saturday, March 22, from 5 to 10 p.m. The event will be held at Wyndham Lancaster Resort and Convention Center, 2300 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Proceeds will benefit GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster, a Down syndrome achievement center. Proceeds will help to provide programming to people of all ages with Down syndrome in the community.

and surrounding communities in 2020.

Small grew up in Maryland and at Misawa Air Force Base in Japan. He has resided in York since 2015 and has worked for more than 20 years in various culinary environments.

A graduate of Johnson & Wales University, he trained in Luxembourg and worked at a Michelin Star restaurant. He worked for several food service companies in New England before serving as executive chef at restaurants in Allentown and Easton. For the past two and a half years, he has worked for York Country Day School.

At Chopped for Charity, guests will enjoy a buffet dinner, live entertainment and information about the shelter’s mission and impact. Complimentary soda and water will be provided, with beer and wine available for purchase. The culinary competition portion of the event will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The chefs will have 30 minutes to create a dish, which will be tasted by four judges. Three of the judges will be prominent community members, while the fourth judge position will be auctioned off to an event attendee.

Following the competition, a live auction will be held, featuring experiences such as farm tours and private in-home dinners with local chefs. Additionally, a fund-a-need paddle auction will also take place, spotlighting how dona -

tions directly support the shelter’s ongoing efforts. A whiskey pull will also be featured.

Last year’s inaugural Chopped for Charity was very well received, Jalbert shared. “Last year’s event sold out, and we had to move to a larger venue,” she stated.

Proceeds from the event will help fund surgical monitoring medical equipment and care of the animals in the Columbia Animal Shelter, as well as provide funds for the site’s wellness and spay/ neuter clinics.

The event is made possible through sponsorships, which are still available, Jalbert said.

“We would like to thank Wegmans Food Markets, Art Printing Company, The Restaurant Store and Kleen-Rite for being sponsors,” she added.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at https://tinyurl.com/3bt jbyc9 and will be available until Friday, March 28, or until they are sold out. Tickets will not be available at the door.

“Come out and enjoy a

fabulous time,” Jalbert said, noting that the event is for adults only. “While the competition heats up, you’ll enjoy delicious food, live entertainment and the chance to support our furry friends in need,” she remarked. “Your ticket doesn’t just get you a seat at the table. It helps provide shelter, care and love for animals waiting for their forever homes.”
