Lady Comets Grab East Regional Bowling Title

Penn Manor bowling coach Chris Vital thought his girls’ team had a shot to win the Eastern PA Regional Bowling Championship Saturday, March 5 at 222 Dutch Lanes and they did just that.

“The girls have a good attitude, and they stay focused,” said Vital. “They had quite a day.”

In a field of 24 and after three qualifying rounds and two baker sets, the girls were in second place with a 3641 pin total, following Shikellamy (3938). Lacey Slaymaker recovered from a 149 first game with two 213’s to lead the way while Eva Brubaker added a pair of 203 games.

“And freshman Kayla Wasche did above what was expected to key our qualifying rounds,” noted Vital. “She threw a 168 and a 183 when we needed them. We were also happy to have Willow Hee back in the lineup. She was out sick for the singles competition on Friday.

“The girls were disappointed in their 832 first game,” he added. “But we were in third place. The lanes were tough. In fact, we didn’t move into second place until the baker sets.”

That second-place finish gave them a quarterfinals bye. In the semis, the Comets topped Neshaminy (#3) 178165, 132-178 and 190-161.

“Eva finished with three straight strikes in that third game to put us ahead,” Vital said. “We totally expected to see Shikellamy in the finals. They’ve won four of the last five years, but Govern Mifflin knocked them off in two games.”

Mifflin didn’t have enough to get past the Comets as well. Manor cruised through the championship match 189125, 176-110 to secure the trophy.

“We won in 2012 and 2014 so this was long overdue,” said Vital. “And now we compete in the PA State Championships, March 18-19 at Dutch Lanes.”

In the singles competition on Friday, Corinne Smith rolled a five-round, 872 total to finish 23rd out of 112. The top 12 advanced. Smith was 44 pins shy.

Wasche’s 809 left her in 42nd place while Brubaker was four pins and four places back. Slaymaker rounded out the Comet place winners with a 797, good for 50th place.

“Corinne threw well. She puts a lot of pressure on herself,” said Vital. “And Kayla did pretty good for a freshman, just 115 pins away from moving on.”

The boys’ field was a bit larger with 144 bowlers competing. Derek Warfel rolled four games over 213 for a 1064 total but fell just ten pins shy of advancing. He was 15th overall.

“He bowled seven straight strikes to finish and was one spare away from advancing,” Vital said.

Josh Stock, with a 1045, was 22nd, while Zach Carroll (89th, 913) and Charlie Hull (111th, 866) rounded out the Comet contingent.

In the team portion of the competition, the Comets rolled a 3800 for 20th place out of 36 teams. The top six advanced. Warfel’s 600 series led the way while Hull followed with a 587. Billy Green stepped in with a 215 in the third game for Manor’s third highest individual game of the day.

“The boys struggled in the baker sets and fell out of contention,” said Vital.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Penn Manor senior Kamrin Carroll was recently selected as a Section One first team all-star. He was the Comets leading scorer this year with a 12.3 ppg average.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Manor’s historic run through the post-season did not go unnoticed as the Comets were well represented in the recent all-star balloting. Lily Sugra was the Section One MVP while Megan Collins was Coach of the Year. Other all-star recognitions included Sugra and Morgan Miller as first team all-stars, and Sydney Shepos a second team selection. Izzy Kligge made the all defensive team and Riley Peart the All Academic team.
