Full Stream Ahead ccording to Penn Manor High School (PMHS) esports coach Scott Hertzog, esports came to Lancaster County four years ago and was brought to PMHS in 2019. Within the PMHS esports program, three teams exist on both varsity and junior varsity levels: League of Legends, Overwatch League, and Rocket League. All matches are streamed. About 50 PMHS students have been participating in esports for the 2021-22 academic year, which is nearly twice as many as in the team’s first year in 2019. Not only do esports team members compete against students from other schools, but they are also responsible for streaming their matches and handling social media and photography duties for the team. This past February, the Rocket League varsity esports team finished first at the state championship with a 3-0 win over Coatesville High School. The team

PMHS Rocket League Varsity Esports Team Wins State Title of PMHS students Tyler Moore, Seth Lyter, and Nate Mintzer finished the winter season with a 9-0 record and the Pennsylvania Scholastic Esports League (PSEL) state title. Rocket League is a vehicular soccer game that was first released in July 2015. The highest level of Rocket League is supersonic legend, with the next highest being three levels of grand champion. Hertzog noted that all of the Rocket League varsity esports team players fluctuate within the grand championship levels. “There is a lot of teamwork that goes into it, anticipating where the ball is going to bounce and communicating with teammates,” explained Hertzog. “It’s really no different than any other team sport.” A senior at PMHS, Seth has been playing Rocket League since the end of 2016. “It’s insane the amount of time you need to spend perfecting tiny things and the mechanics,” he commented. A Bittersweet Celebration
All proceeds from the campus celebration will benefit Christcentered education through Lancaster Mennonite School.
“When you have a wedding or baby shower, you get all your favorite people together that you haven’t seen in a really long time,” said Aubrey Kreider, director of marketing and communications at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS). “New Danville’s annual campus celebration is like that, even though it’s changed a lot over the years.” For the first time in three years, LMS’ New Danville location will host its annual campus celebration. This year’s celebration will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday,
April 1, at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event took on a different form in recent years, with an online auction in 2020 and a drive-through chicken barbecue in 2021. This year’s fundraiser is unique in that it will be the last celebration at the New Danville location before LMS unifies prekindergarten through 12th grade at the Lancaster campus on Lincoln Highway East in the fall. “It’ll be really fun to just have all those decades of people in one place to eat, have fun, get to be together, feel connected, and give New Danville a big hug,” stated Kreider. “One of the things I really like about mission trips in general is the opportunity to expose students to thinking about where we’re headed,” stated Beau Walmer, student ministries director at Manor Church. “Also, it’s a way to help them grow skills through something like a service project or maybe step out of their comfort zone through some of the things that we do.” Although Walmer began working at Manor Church in August 2019, this will be his first year assisting with the annual student ministries benefit auction and going on a mission trip with youth group members. The annual student ministries benefit auction at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster, will be held on Saturday, March 26, at 9 a.m. Some of the items up for bids at the benefit auction will include gift cards, tickets to local sporting events, services offered by local residents, gift baskets, a handmade cornhole set, and a handcrafted porch swing. The
All auction proceeds will benefit a summer mission trip to the Appalachia region of Kentucky.
COVID-19 pandemic hit right before the church’s 2020 auction, so donations received that year have been stored and will be auctioned off in addition to the items donated this year. Food and beverages will also be sold throughout the day. All auction proceeds will be used to give local high school and middle school students the opportunity to serve and make an impact in the Appalachia region of Kentucky on their mission trip this summer. From Sunday, June 26, to Friday, July 1, students will help repair homes and churches, lead Bible school, host sports

camps, and build ramps for people with disabilities in that region. According to the statistics compiled by Appalachian Research Commission, one out of every three Appalachians experiences poverty. The average income is 23% lower than the average level of American per capita income. “When it comes to the student benefit auction, it is just kind of a way to support local middle and high school students to give them the opportunity to make an impact specifically through the mission trip this summer,” stated Walmer. Esports from pg 1 Nate, a PMHS junior, mentioned that his goal is to reach the supersonic legend level in the video game before graduating in hopes of receiving scholarship money for college. He started playing in the early months of 2017 and has about 3,000 hours of playing under his belt. “The skill level of Rocket League is pretty much unmatched with any other video game,” he said. “You have to spend thousands of hours to get good at the game.” Tyler, a senior at PMHS, has been playing Rocket League since the winter of 2015. “Being able to bring a state championship title really early on in our program is amazing,” stated Tyler. “I don’t know about other teams, but for us, we play Rocket League ... in addition to playing sports, working part-time jobs, and attending school. “Pack The Park” Aids Community The Lancaster Barnstormers recently hosted Pack the Park, a collection of nonperishable food items, new clothing, toiletries, and other items for those in need in the surrounding community. Donated items were distributed to nearly a dozen community groups, including Lancaster Food Hub, Crispus Attucks Community Center, and Tenfold. Overall, 28 skids of product, totaling over 20,000 pounds, were collected. In addition to donations from individuals and families, several local businesses made contributions, including Grove Collaborative, Johnson & Johnson, Hess Brothers, and Gap View Farm Market. Wheels for the World, a ministry of Joni and Friends, provides a free wheelchair, along with a Bible and the Gospel message, to families affected by disability. At the end of March, the wheelchairs will be transported to a Wheels for the World Restoration Center, located in a correctional facility, where inmates restore the wheelchairs to like-new condition. Siloam Ethiopia will offer an Ethiopian meal on Saturday, March 26, from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster, 175 Church St., Landisville. The food will be offered for curbside pickup on a firstcome, first-served basis. Menu options will include doro wat, chicken with gravy featuring an Ethiopian spice called berbere; misir wat, a spicy dish featuring cooked lentils; a non-spicy dish of split yellow peas with gravy; and a non-spicy vegetable dish that combines cabbage, carrots and potatoes. Meals will be served with injera, a type of flatbread. Proceeds will go toward ministries in Harar, Ethiopia. These are an orphanage and a free clinic that serves people who are homeless or otherwise in need. Due to a civil war, demand for medical care is high.

With the average farm in Lancaster County being 77 acres, Glory Be Farm in Manheim is considered small. Duane and Tina Sauder purchased the farm, where they raise Berkshire pigs, 23 years ago. Still, it wasn’t until January 2020 that they took the crucial first steps to make their small business dreams a reality. Just before the pandemic hit, the Sauders launched their pork snack line. Fast forward two years, and the business continues to grow. In addition to online sales, several Glory Be Farm
products bearing the PA Preferred label can be purchased at locations in Manheim, Mount Joy, Lititz, Ephrata, and Elizabethtown. While selling their products is vital to the farm’s success, it’s the lifestyle that makes it meaningful for the Sauders. Like many local farmers, Duane and Tina come from multigenerational farms. The ninth generation of Tina’s family is currently working the Elizabethtown farm where she grew up. For the Sauders’ two daughters, helping out on the farm is part of their normal day. ing out the stalls, 16-year-old Riley and 13-year-old Morgan share the responsibilities of the family farm. Both girls are involved in 4-H and show pigs, beef, and goats. Passing a farm on to the next generation is often a challenge as children grow up and have interests apart from farming. “We’re blessed to be able to raise them in this lifestyle and culture. … It’s a passion and a lifestyle that you don’t clock out from,” explained Tina. A florist by trade, Tina had to cut back her hours to focus more time on the farm. When talking about launching the pork snack line just before the pandemic hit, Tina said, “People were (focusing on) getting back to their roots, shopping local. So, while the world was turning upside down, it was a good time to start the business, but we didn’t know that.” The Sauders share their farm life with followers on social media. With the popularity of farmhouse style, Tina says, many people think farming is a peaceful way of life, and they romanticize it. Using social media allows her to connect with people to share the culture
and dispel myths associated with farming. “We love our livestock, and we always say that they have one bad day. …We give them the best life we can (before that day),” she noted. The Sauders’ other goal is to raise awareness. “We’re looking to bridge the gap. … Americans are at least three generations removed from the farm. … It’s our job not only to provide but to educate,” said Tina. Though Glory Be Farm may be small, Duane and Tina’s passion for farming is vast. “It’s so important for us to inspire others to go after their dreams because there were times in our lives that were hardships, and the dream seemed unattainable. One time my husband and I were talking about it, and my husband said, ‘Well, if that ever happens, glory be to God,’ and that’s where the name (of the farm) came from,” Tina said. When asked if she had an advice for those considering farming or achieving any goal, Tina responded, “You have to take that first step of faith, because you can’t steer a parked car very well.”

The River Riders 4-H Horse Club will host an organizational meeting on Saturday, March 19, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, for youths ages 8 to 18. There will be a presentation and craft during the meeting. Future monthly meetings will be held at Flying M Stable, 400 Shreiner Road, Leola. Horse ownership is not required. 4-H horse clubs provide educational opportunities, but do not provide horses
or riding lessons. A Cloverbud program will also be offered for children ages 5 to 7. Youths need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to the organizational meeting. Alleviating World Hunger With FMSC According to Lora Mangus Wenger, chairperson of the Lancaster County Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event, approximately 6,200 children around the world die each day from hunger and malnutritionrelated causes. Founded in 1987, FMSC is a nonprofit organization that aims to alleviate world hunger by hosting MobilePack events, where volunteers hand-pack nutritious meals specifically designed to assist in reversing and preventing undernutrition. Every day, FMSC meals are distributed to schools, orphanages, clinics, and feeding programs around the world to help break the cycle of poverty. Since the organization was established, FMSC has distributed more than 2 billion meals in nearly 70 countries. The seventh annual threeday FMSC MobilePack event will take place at Willow
Street Mennonite Church (WSMC), 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, from Friday, March 25, to Sunday, March 27. One thousand volunteers are needed to work during two-hour shifts to provide 300,000 meals in three days. “This event is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to give back and show care for our local and global communities,” stated Wenger. “Meeting basic needs through providing food assistance seems simple, but makes a huge positive impact in the life of a person in need.” In order to pack meals safely, volunteers will be screened with questions prior to admission and will be encouraged to wear a mask throughout the event. Hand-washing stations will be implemented this year, and increased disinfecting practices between shifts per COVID-19 protocols will be in place. All volunteers will need to preregister online. Walkins will not be accepted due to

Lady Comets Grab East Regional Bowling Title

Penn Manor bowling coach Chris Vital thought his girls’ team had a shot to win the Eastern PA Regional Bowling Championship Saturday, March 5 at 222 Dutch Lanes and they did just that. “The girls have a good attitude, and they stay focused,” said Vital. “They had quite a day.” In a field of 24 and after three qualifying rounds and two baker sets, the girls were in second place with a 3641 pin total, following Shikellamy (3938). Lacey Slaymaker recovered from a 149 first game with two 213’s to lead the way while Eva Brubaker added a pair of 203 games. “And freshman Kayla Wasche did above what was expected to key our qualifying rounds,” noted Vital. “She threw a 168 and a 183 when we needed them. We were also happy to have Willow
Hee back in the lineup. She was out sick for the singles competition on Friday. “The girls were disappointed in their 832 first game,” he added. “But we were in third place. The lanes were tough. In fact, we didn’t move into second place until the baker sets.” That second-place finish gave them a quarterfinals bye. In the semis, the Comets topped Neshaminy (#3) 178165, 132-178 and 190-161. “Eva finished with three straight strikes in that third game to put us ahead,” Vital said. “We totally expected to see Shikellamy in the finals. They’ve won four of the last five years, but Govern Mifflin knocked them off in two games.” Mifflin didn’t have enough to get past the Comets as well. Manor cruised through the championship match 189125, 176-110 to secure the trophy.

“We won in 2012 and 2014 so this was long overdue,” said Vital. “And now we compete in the PA State Championships, March 18-19 at Dutch Lanes.” In the singles competition on Friday, Corinne Smith rolled a five-round, 872 total to finish 23rd out of 112. The top 12 advanced. Smith was 44 pins shy. Wasche’s 809 left her in 42nd place while Brubaker was four pins and four places back. Slaymaker rounded out the Comet place winners with a 797, good for 50th place. “Corinne threw well. She puts a lot of pressure on herself,” said Vital. “And Kayla did pretty good for a freshman, just 115 pins away from moving on.” The boys’ field was a bit larger with 144 bowlers competing. Derek Warfel rolled four games over 213 for a 1064 total but fell just ten pins shy of advancing. He was 15th overall. “He bowled seven straight strikes to finish and was one spare away from advancing,” Vital said. Josh Stock, with a 1045, was 22nd, while Zach Carroll (89th, 913) and Charlie Hull (111th, 866) rounded out the Comet contingent.
In the team portion of the competition, the Comets rolled a 3800 for 20th place out of 36 teams. The top six advanced. Warfel’s 600 series led the way while Hull followed with a 587. Billy Green stepped in with a 215 in the third game for Manor’s third highest individual game of the day. “The boys struggled in the baker sets and fell out of contention,” said Vital. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Penn Manor senior Kamrin Carroll was recently selected as a Section One first team
all-star. He was the Comets leading scorer this year with a 12.3 ppg average. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Manor’s historic run through the post-season did not go unnoticed as the Comets were well represented in the recent all-star balloting. Lily Sugra was the Section
One MVP while Megan Collins was Coach of the Year. Other all-star recognitions included Sugra and Morgan Miller as first team all-stars, and Sydney Shepos a second team selection. Izzy Kligge made the all defensive team and Riley Peart the All Academic team.

Community Foundation Launches New Fund The Aastha Horizons Fund at the Lancaster County Community Foundation launched on Feb. 14, providing new opportunities for showing love for the community through collective giving. The fund was established by a group of local Asian-Indian professionals as a reflection of their care for Lancaster County and their commitment to supporting the community for the long-term. The fund began with nearly $50,000, and monies will support urgent community issues as well as build resources meant to continue into the future. “Aastha” is a word in the Indian language meaning
belief, faith, trust, and hope for a better tomorrow. The Aastha Horizons Fund will address community needs and will provide Asian-Indian American community members with a channel for collective philanthropy. Inspired by a shared passion for a welcoming Lancaster County that has supported their families and careers, the members of the founding Advisory Group came together to explore the idea of collective giving.
