Conestoga Herb Guild slates spring programs

For many in Lancaster County, gardening is an integral part of daily life. Every grower relies on certain tips and methods, from amateur gardeners to seasoned horticulturists who tend to plants for fun or rely on the soil for meals. The Conestoga Herb Guild provides a space for those with green thumbs

to share tips with each other, trade supplies and hone their skills together.
“So many of our members grow their own herbs and cook with them. The guild focuses on utilizing and growing herbs in everyday life, as well as the health benefits that herbs provide for people,” said Mary Ann Steinhauer of the Conestoga Herb Guild.

Manor
Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster, will host a benefit auction on Saturday, March 25, at 9 a.m. The proceeds from the auction will benefit the church’s youth programs and mission trips, which include students from the Penn Manor, Hempfield and Columbia areas.

All items that will be sold at the auction are being donated from members of the congregation as well as local residents and businesses. Available items will include gift cards, tickets to sporting events, gift baskets, handmade goods and vouchers for services provided by local residents. Food and beverages will also be available to purchase at the auction, and the proceeds from food sales will also support the church’s youth programs. Breakfast foods will be served during the morning hours of the event, and lunch items will be sold in the after-
In July, students in Manor Church’s youth program will embark on a mission trip to Waldorf, Md. The students will assist the community in Waldorf by leading bible studies, repairing homes and churches and distributing goods at local food banks.
“These trips are opportunities to give students a greater understanding of what it means to follow Christ and serve others,” said Beau Walmer, student ministries director at Manor Church. “They also give students a chance to live out the church’s values and experience cultures around the world.”
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Manor Church’s youth group completed mission trips to serve communities in Puerto Rico. After taking a break from traveling over the course of the pandemic, the youth group visited Viper, Ky., last year. Students completed projects and assisted the residents of Viper, which is located in
the rural Appalachian region of the state. Walmer noted that each location for the trip is selected to give the students experience with working in different communities. Since the group visited a remote location like Viper last year, Walmer wanted to take the students to a town like Waldorf, which lies just outside of Washington D.C., “We’re always open to God’s leading and seeing where we feel we’re needed the most,” Walmer said.
In addition to the youth program’s mission trips, students also participate in various service projects in the local community. During Manor Serves, a weeklong service event hosted by the church, students helped with mulching and other yard work projects in the area. Every December, the youth group partners with another ministry called Connect to the Kingdom to make and distribute meals at Musser Park in Lancaster city.

Scholarship offered to future EMTs and paramedics

Michael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others. The Michael P. McMahon
Scholarship for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.

Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon. “He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated.
Added Joanne, “Michael’s life was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”

Herb Guild

The Conestoga Herb Guild hosts its programs and meetings at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. Although certain meetings are limited to members of the guild, several meetings are open to the public for a nominal fee. Each meeting revolves around a specific topic or activity, and many meetings feature a guest speaker. At the guild’s meeting on March 8, Steinhauer shared hacks that she has found to be effective for peeling, preserving and drying ginger root. Members often bring their own potted herbs to meetings so that others can take a piece to plant in their own gardens.

The guild will host its next meeting on April 12. The topic for the meeting is “Creating Year-Round Interest With Native Plants,” and the gathering will feature a presentation from guest speaker Adam Barkafski. Barkafski, a Master Gardener from Penn State, will discuss topics such as the

importance of sustaining native herbs and how to select plants to extend the duration of time that a garden remains in bloom.

On May 10, the Conestoga Herb Guild will host its annual plant and seed exchange. During the program, members will bring a variety of harvested plants and herbs from their gardens to trade with others. For this program, members will be considered the guest speakers and will share their favorite gardening techniques and advice pertaining to gardening safety and time efficiency. “Certain members are very experienced with specific herbs and have acquired little bits of knowledge from years of experience,” Steinhauer said. “Our main goal is to educate people on herbs you can grow or buy locally and using them in a way that it becomes part of their lives.”

For more information about the Conestoga Herb Guild, including how to become a member, contact Steinhauer at flygirl1947@ outlook.com.

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lan-

caster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarmland trust.org.

Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.
The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Joanne noted that her free-spirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference. “Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who he was.”

When Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that they asked family members and friends to
contribute.

“Our goal is to find as many people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”
Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capability and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.
To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a non-

profit organization made up of representatives from all of the EMS agencies serving Lancaster County. The initial scholarship was open to students and alumni at Lancaster Catholic High School, but a second round is being offered countywide.
The scholarship is open to both current students and adults. “Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workforce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be someone who wants to change careers and
needs financial support to do that.”
The scholarship is meant to be a stepping stone into a career that helps people, said Michael’s sister Colleen Murphy, who added, “We need more helpers in the world like my brother.”
The application process for the scholarship will run from Saturday, April 1, through Friday, June 30. Scholarship winners will be notified by Monday, July 31. For more information, to obtain a scholarship application or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, contact Joe McMahon at joe@joemcmahonlaw.com.

Did you know?
Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such products poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems.

Penn Manor bowlers qualify for states

Penn Manor’s girls team qualified for the state bowling tournament for the second straight year at Saturday’s, March 4, Eastern Regional Bowling Championships held at Leisure Lanes.

In addition to the team, Eva Brubaker will represent the Comets as an individual after placing 5th, in a field of 112, in the individual regional competition.
“Eva is the first girls we’ve had qualify for states since 2014,” lauded head coach Chris Vital. “That’s hard to do.”
The girls’ competition was held Friday, March 3, at Dutch Lanes. Brubaker got off to a slow start, rolling a 147 in her first game, but rallied after that, She threw four games over 200, including a series high 237 in game five, leaving her with a 1013 total good for fifth place. The top 12 qualified for states.
“After the first game switched balls and got going after that,” said Vital. “She needed a 190 in the fifth game to make it and she shot a 237. I was ecstatic.”
In the opening round quadmatch, Brubaker rolled a 155 and did not advance to the quarterfinals.
Also in the individual competition, Corinne Smith finished 22nd in the qualifying rounds. “She rolled a
131 in her first game but recovered after that and held her own,” said Vital. “Her 910 total was just 57 pins shot of the cut.”
Kayla Wasche (47th), Lacey Slaymaker (55th), Hope Leaman (74th) and Abigail Nesmith (97th) also competed.
CD East’s Rayana Gonzalez was the qualifying round leader with a 1101 five-game total.
Representing the boys’ team was Josh Stock who finished 68th overall with a 939 series. A 1081 or better made the qualifying top 12 cut. Pottsgrove’s David Swavely, with 1197, topped the qualifying rounds. The team portion of the competition got underway on Saturday at Leisure Lanes where the girls, after three standard games and two baker sets, finished in second place with a 3833 total. Shikellamy was out in front with 4339 and Gov. Mifflin was over 300 pins behind with 3521.
“We were in fourth place after our first game (861),” noted Vital. “We bowled a 905 in the second game and Shikellamy was the only team to beat us in that round. We did outscore them in the baker sets,” he added. “It was pretty much a two-horse race, no doubt about it.” Brubaker led the 3-game portion with a 610. Smith (571) and Slaymaker (556) were close behind. Wasche added a 483 with Nesmith adding a 291 2-game total and Leaman rounding things out with a 138.
The Comets earned a bye in the quarterfinals and faced Gov. Mifflin in the semis. They lost the first game 176-166 but charged back to take control, winning 222-167 and 197-151.

“We started the second game with five straight strikes,” recalled Vital. “That got us fired up.”
The Comets dropped game one 181-136 but pulled off a 215-198 second game win before bowing out with a 247-150 result and settling for second place.
“After the first three frames in the finals we were two pins apart,” said Vital. “But Shikellamy threw seven straight strikes after that, and we struggled.

“In the second game we were actually behind before Corinne, Lacey in the ninth, and then Eva got strikes to even things up,” he added. “Even though we lost the final game, we were right there with them. They beat us by 600 pins in the qualifying round, but we hung
in there. The girls have been very consistent.”
The Pennsylvania State High School Bowling Championships will be held March 17-18 at Eastway

Produce Spotlight will be presented by the dietitians every Monday at noon. Participants will learn how frozen fruits and vegetables can add ease, convenience and nutrition to their meals. March is also Frozen Food Month, and the dietitians will highlight ways that home cooks can bring delicious and inspiring dishes to life for both dinner and dessert.
Wellbeing Workshops will be offered on Mondays at 7 p.m. The dietitians will discuss ways to improve one’s overall wellbeing, whether it is improving physical well-being or financial well-being with tips to stretch a budget.
Table Talk will be presented on Wednesdays at noon. The interactive discussion will highlight the benefits and importance of incorporating whole grains into a healthy diet. Also, participants will learn ways to add whole grains to their meals.
Family Meals at 5, where attendees will learn how to build easy, quick and balanced meals in under 30 minutes, will be offered every Tuesday at 5 p.m. In March, the dietitians will highlight Giant’s Nature’s Promise line of products.
Easter Dinner on a Dime will be offered on Tuesdays at noon. With the ham as the centerpiece, the dietitians will present ideas on how to help round out the meal with sides that will not break the budget. Also on tap is a special night of St. Patrick’s Day fun as the dietitians explore festive food and beer pairings on Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m.
Visit www.giantfoodstores .com/wellness or www .martinsfoods.com/wellness for recipe ideas and resources. There is also a link to preregister for all virtual classes and a complete listing of ingredients needed for each class. In addition, customers can earn 50 Choice Rewards points when they register, provide their card number and state and attend the entire class.
