The annual student ministries benefit auction at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 21. The goal for the event is to raise the approximately $30,000 needed to help youth group members go on mission trips this summer. “We have a variety of items from local businesses and within the church community,” said Beau Walmer, the new student ministries director. Walmer began working at Manor Church in August 2019, filling the position vacated by Ryan Cobb, who became associate pastor at the church in May 2019. While items keep arriving at the

The doors to Cinderella’s Closet will once again be thrown open just in time for Penn Manor High School’s prom. The Cinderella’s Closet event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 George St., Millersville. The rear entrance is accessible from High School Avenue. The Millersville Lioness Lions Club hosted its first Cinderella’s Closet last year and was pleased with the outcome. “It went really well. We gave out about 40 dresses,” club president Phyllis Ream reported. Club members were thrilled with the community response, as more than 100 new and gently used gowns were donated for the event. Describing the annual event sponsored by SHOUT Student Ministries at Hempfield United Methodist Church as a gigantic indoor yard sale does not even begin to hint at its enormity. The yard sale practically fills one level of the church building, 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Youth group members and supporters spend the two weeks before the sale pricing the items and sorting them by department: domestics, furniture, toys, office and craft, collectibles, jewelry, electronics, sporting goods, seasonal/holidays, tools and outdoors, pets, and clothing. Each department will have its own space at the sale. “The yard sale serves many purposes, but its largest purpose is to support summer youth missions. Youths are expected to take active roles (in the event),” said senior high youth director Stacy Knight. In addition to sorting, the young people help to serve dinner during the preparation nights, and they work as cashiers and runners on the day of the yard sale. A majority of the sale inventory is contributed by congregation members. “They know we have the sale every year,” Knight remarked. “We start communicating after Christmas that we need stuff, we need volunteers, and we need shoppers. We do get people by word of mouth who are cleaning out (their collections).” This year’s sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. From noon to 1 p.m., nearly everything will be sold by the bag. Jewelry and collectibles will not be included in the bargain. “Every year, we have these amazing stories. The yard sale always manages to meet a need for a family or group of families,” Knight said, noting that with careful packing in the bargain bags, customers have been able to restock wardrobes and kitchens after a fire or an unexpected move at much less than the cost of retail. Knight also said she is grateful that any unsold items can go to area organizations that also help others. Unto, formerly Global Aid Network; Community Aid; Boy Scout troops; and other churches with
yard sales have benefited in the past. “These items were entrusted to us for a specific purpose, so we want to make sure that what doesn’t sell is used with good intentions,” Knight said. The Spirit Café will be set up in the church’s fellowship hall. Other ministries from the congregation and some from the community will sell a variety of food and beverages. Power Packs Project is slated to participate in the café, Knight said, adding, “It’s another great way that we can support more than just us.” Helping others is a goal of the summer mission trips. Middle school students will go to Philadelphia in June to volunteer with The Philadelphia Project, and the high-schoolers will attend Momentum Youth Conference in Marion, Ind., in July. “We’re trying something new this year. Normally, we go on just a strict mission trip,” Knight said of the decision to attend Momentum. The conference will combine spiritual training with volunteerism. “Our teens have grown a lot just in this year,” Knight commented. “I’ve been in awe of the growth and the leadership that they’ve developed. They’re taking on roles in preaching and teaching in the church. These (mission trips) help to nurture that. These weeks are great for life lessons.” SHOUT welcomes students in grades seven to 12 for Bible study at the church on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. On Sundays, middle-schoolers gather for worship and teaching at 10 a.m., and high-schoolers meet from 6 to 8 p.m. for dinner, worship, teaching, and small group discussion. His presentation will center on stories of religious persecution that are recorded in two historical “Martyrs Mirror” books, which were printed in the 16th and 19th centuries. students. In June, seven juniors and seniors will go to Puerto Rico, and in July, 27 students in seventh through 10th grades will travel to Pittsburgh. The groups will serve with organizations they have previously worked with. Eighth-grader Emily Supplee said that last year, the students were assigned to serve in various locations throughout Pittsburgh during the day, and everyone gathered back at their home base for evening worship and to sleep. Some students volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club, and others assisted at a nonprofit cafĂŠ. Emily helped to empty a food bank so the ceiling could be repaired and removed carpet in preparation for new flooring. In Puerto Rico last year, the team divided its day between two locations, said senior Caleb Supplee. The mornings were spent interacting with children at a vacation Bible school, and in the afternoons, the youths helped with hurricane reconstruction efforts. Caleb’s team repaired a leaking roof and painted a home inside and out. The team also participated in a community outreach night during which they took bags of food to residents and prayed with them. “The purpose is to get out there and help people,â€? Caleb said. “It also helps youths see

Burl’s brother, Stanley (Ken Hess), has tagged along, as he was recently released from prison. As the musical unfolds, each family member shares a story about their beliefs. In a reference to Stanley’s time in prison, Support for Prison Ministries has been selected as the beneficiary of the show’s proceeds. “It’s a different role for me,” Hess said about Uncle Stanley. “In past shows, my parts were more comical. This is a more serious role for me.” That is not to say that Stanley is an entirely solemn character. The interaction between the Sanders brothers is often humorous, Doreen noted. June’s antics also provide some levity as she believes she has a gift for interpretive signing, which draws heavily from pantomime. This is Shirk’s first time appearing with Promise Players. “It’s the biggest role I’ve ever had, so that’s exciting,” she said. Hatalsky and Hostetler are also Promise Players newcomers. Additionally, Hatalsky is new to the area, and making the cast has eased the transition. “When I moved down, I didn’t know anybody, and (the cast) felt like a family,” she commented. Hostetler said he auditioned for the show because he likes the music. He will play guitar on two songs. Hatalsky occasionally plays piano and Shirk takes a turn on the washboard and tambourine during the show. The primary accompanists, however, are McVey, Kilby, fiddler Randie Rineer, mandolinist Larry Russell, and bass player Abby Hylton. Dorothy Smith plays accordion and appears as Myrtle to Doreen’s Maude, two unspeaking characters referenced in the script. Promise Players shows often sell out, and high attendance is anticipated for “Smoke on the Mountain.” “About 10 years ago, someone approached us and said, ‘You ought to do it.’ We looked into it, but it cost $3,000 plus the cost of scripts, music, and other production costs,” Promise Players director and founder Doreen Creighton recalled. “The same person came back to us two years ago and asked if they got people to help fund it, would we do the show.” The cast features seven actors and a pit of five musicians, two of whom - guitarist Ron McVey and banjo player Tim Kilby - are members of Summit Hill Bluegrass Band. “It is a popular play, and the reason it’s popular is the music,” Doreen said, describing the music as Southern gospel and bluegrass, featuring close harmonies. “The score includes well-known Southern gospel hymns that people love, plus a few originals,” she said. The entire show takes place in a North Carolina Baptist church, which is led by Pastor Oglethorpe (Tim Creighton). More than 200 students from school districts and independent schools throughout the region converged on the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown, Mount Joy, and Willow Street campuses on Feb. 14 to compete in the District 4 SkillsUSA Competitions. Career and Technology Education students brought their skills, experience, and techniques to take part in dozens of different competition categories from Automotive Skills Technology to Criminal Justice and from Job Interview Skills to Dental Assisting. The day of competitions culminated at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, where winners were announced and awards were conferred. Many LCCTC students competed in the district-level competitions at Franklin County Career and Technology Center on Jan. 17; students from a SkillsUSA-hosting CTC often compete at an adjacent CTC in order to avoid home team bias and due to the fact that not all CTCs offer every SkillsUSA competition category. Warfel Qualifies For PIAA Bowling Championships by Mona Steinhauer
On Friday, February 29, Penn Manor’s Derek Warfel qualified for the State Championships as an individual. “It’s not easy to do,� said head coach Chris Vital. “I’ve been here 16 years and he’s just the sixth bowler to reach states. And he’s just a sophomore.� Warfel, along with Gavin Davidson, Jordan Kahler and Josh Stock, competed in the Eastern PA Regional Championships at Leisure Lanes. After five qualifying rounds, Warfel found himself in ninth place with a 1085 pin count, including a 228 and a 247 in his last two games. Davidson, with a 1024 and a high game of 235, was 27th while Kahler followed closely, just 12 pins behind and in 31st place. Stock rounded
things out in 76th place and a 929. There were 185 bowlers in the competition and only the top 12 advanced. In the opening round quad-match, Warfel rolled a 219 to get past Danville’s Drew Sassaman (209) and Kyle Kizis (181), and Cedar Crest’s Kolby Bennett (181). “Bennett was a back-to-back state champ,� said Vital. “With two frames left, Derek was trailing all three bowlers but then threw three strikes in the tenth frame.� In the quarterfinals, however, Warfel faced Shikellamy’s Carter Thomas, who was fourth, and rolled a 158. Thomas advanced all the way to the finals and settled for second place overall. “Derek finished sixth overall,� noted Vital. “And we had a couple guys that were right. Gavin missed
12th place by 45 pins and Jordan was 57 pins away. They just didn’t get hot.� Representing the girls’ team, Katelyn Warfel finished 15th out of 135 in the competition held at Dutch Lanes in Ephrata. She rolled a 961 total with a game-high 217. Delaney Reitnauer, with a 738, was 92nd and Leila Abbas followed at 105th with a 700 series. “Katelyn, a senior, was just 18 pins and three spot away,� said Vital. Saturday, again at Leisure Lanes, the teams competed in the team tournament and, for the second year in a row, the Comets failed to qualify for the state championships. “We qualified four years in a row and five out of six,� noted Vital. “Not many teams can say that. We certainly had the talent to finish higher but we weren’t as focused as we needed to be.�
The Comets finished in 20th place out of 40 teams. Kahler (658), Davidson (580), Stock (500), Warfel (492) and Charlie Hull (482) competed. As the only L-L League girls’ team, the Comets finished ninth out of 27 teams. The top six advanced. Welsh led the way with a three game 505 series. Reitnauer (464) and Lacey Slaymaker (522) also rolled three games. Abbas chipped in with a 271 two game total. Willow Hee (350) and Lauren Shroyer (264) also rolled two games. SWIMMING Post-season swimming continued Friday and Saturday, February 28-29 as the Comets competed in the District Three Championships at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg. And, for the first time in three years, the Comets will be represented
in the State Championships. “We’ve had no swimmers qualify for states since I started coaching (3 years now),� said head coach Eric Urban. “Now we have four going as Pan Kunyu, Wes Kendig, Sam Lutter and Andrew Purcel will swim both the 200 free relay and the 200 medley.� That 200 free team finished in third place on Friday afternoon. They were seeded third with a 1:28.42 and earned the bronze with a new school record 1:27.88, just getting edged out by Palmyra (1:27.62). They opened the meet Friday afternoon with a fifth place 1:37.51 in the 200 medley relay. Also on Friday, Kendig earned a fifth place medal in the 100 fly. He lowered his seeding time with a 52.32. Purcel, seeded 10th in the 50 free, improved his seeding time with
a 21.82 and a ninth place finish. Lutter added an 11th place effort in the 200 IM with a 2:00.6 and Barry Everett was 25th. Coming back on Saturday, Lutter set a new school record with a 59.67 in the 100 breaststroke where he finished in sixth place. Everett followed in 18th place. Competing in the 100 backstroke, Kenyu was 25th and freshman Brayden Clow was one place back. Purcel, Kendig and Kenyu also competed in the 100 freestyle where they settled for 16th, 18th and 19th place respectively. As a team, the Comets finished in 10th place. Competing for the girls, Avery Groff, a sophomore, was ninth in the 500 free (5:16.67) and 18th in the 200 freestyle. Jordan Kendig added a 27th place finish in the 500 free.

Cinderella’s Closet is the Lioness Club’s last big event for its program year. The group meets at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month from September to June at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Its fall lineup of activities includes a game stand at a festival held in Freedom Memorial Park in September, a bingo fundraiser in October, a Trunk or Treat event in November, and Breakfast With Santa in December. The Lionesses also participate in Community Day at the Millersville Lions Club swimming pool in the summer. The Lionesses use the proceeds from their fundraisers to support local nonprofits, including Milagro House, Mom’s House of Lancaster, Millersville Area Meals on Wheels, Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster, and The Loft. The club also contributes to people who have had cancer or are going through hard times, and it donates to Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp. Recently, the club began sponsoring several Little Free Library boxes around Millersville, and plans are in the works to branch this initiative out into other communities. “’We serve.’ That’s the Lions’ motto,” Ream remarked. “We’re always looking for new members. The promise to help people at all times is part of the Boy Scout Oath. Boy Scout Troop 64 demonstrated its commitment to its oath through a recent service project for its charter organization, Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. At its Feb. 18 meeting, the troop’s committee approved the purchase of a secure display box in which to house an automated external defibrillator (AED). The medical device will be supplied through a grant found by Assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans, and she will be in charge of maintenance and upkeep. Evans had noted that the church lacked an AED, a device that is becoming commonplace in public buildings. In addition to Troop 64’s meetings, Salem UCC hosts numerous meetings throughout the week. Working with the church to ensure that the appropriate equipment is on hand in the event of a medical emergency seemed like the right thing to do, Evans explained. “The timing was really good,” Evans said. “They were ready for it and had formed a safety committee (to look into obtaining an AED).” The secure box will be bought with money raised by troop members. The Scouts host several fundraisers throughout the year, with the next one falling on Satur-
day, March 21. The all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner will be held at Salem UCC from 4 to 7 p.m. The menu will include pasta, sauce, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert, and beverages. Gluten-free pasta will be available. During the meal, a craft table will be open for children to enjoy at no additional charge. Troop 64 members will serenade the guests every half-hour as well. Separate prices have been set for children and for adults. Tickets may be purchased in advance from the members of Troop 64 and Cub Scout Pack 37. “To get the Cub Scouts involved, they can sell tickets and keep half (of the price). We do it so they’re introduced to the troop, and it helps their pack too,” Evans remarked. Similarly, Scouts who sell tickets receive half of the amount they sold into their activity accounts, and those who work at the dinner receive an additional percentage. “We try to make it easy so there’s not a big expense for when they go on trips, like to Canada,” Evans explained. This summer, about 20 Scouts are slated to go to summer camp at Bashore Scout Reservation in Jonestown, and an additional six will travel to Atikokan, Ontario, Canada, to participate in a Northern Tier High Adventure. The half-dozen Scouts will be accompanied by two adult leaders, and the eight individuals will spend about six weekends preparing for the adventure. They will then be dropped

There will be an occasional checkpoint, but for the most part, the group will be on its own in the wilds of Canada. It is not too late for youths in fifth grade and up who are interested in Scouting to join Troop 64. Currently, the troop has approximately 24 members. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at Salem UCC. The Scouts are planning to again participate in Wreaths Across America in December. Troop 64 is already accepting donations to ensure that every grave of a deceased veteran is honored for the holidays. Evans expressed her gratitude that several businesses have already sponsored wreaths for two local cemeteries, and more wreaths have been sponsored for placement at other local graves, should the respective cemetery boards choose to participate. WAA donations will be accepted at any time, Evans said. “We have a lot of awesome projects going on,” she concluded. Barnstormers Announce 2020 Promotional Schedule Year 16 of Lancaster Barnstormers baseball will get underway on Friday, May 8, and fans in the community can look forward to another action-packed season on the field and fun-filled season in the stands. The Barnstormers will honor the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo on Friday, July 17. One of the team’s own - left-hander Jared Lakind - will head to the Summer Games as a member of Team Israel. The Barnstormers will wear custom Olympic-style jerseys presented by PSECU that will be auctioned off to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. Also commemorated during the summer will be the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, on the exact date of the anniversary, Tuesday, Aug. 18. To honor the passage of the amendment, fans will be given the chance to vote on different promotions over the course of the game. Lancaster’s professional team also wants to bring some humor into the picture, with a theme of meme, celebrating the best of internet chuckles on Friday, May 15. Then, the Labor Day weekend will kick off with Salute to Stand-up Comedy Night on Friday, Sept. 4. Plus, the Barnstormers will host Parrothead Night on Friday, July 3. The Barnstormers will play host to a number of special guests for children of all ages. There will be a Princess Day featuring Elsa and Cinderella on Sunday, June 28, and a Superhero Day on Sunday, Aug. 2. Baby Yoda will make an appearance in the form of a Baby Yoda Cylo bobblehead giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 8, presented by Penn State Health. Each of the 11 Saturdays this season, including July 4, will feature a post-game fireworks show from Bixler Pyrotechnics. Also slated on Saturdays will be Manufacturing Night on May 9; the annual Salute to Veterans on May 30; Hershey’s Chocolate
World Night on June 13, with special appearances by characters and a 4D show pass giveaway to children; the Farm Show on June 27; Pink Patch Night, when local police departments join the fight against breast cancer, on July 18; Halloween in the Ballpark on Aug. 22; and a Salute to Philadelphia on Sept. 5. Irish heritage will be celebrated twice. Celtic Night will take place on Saturday, Aug. 1, and the season will end on Thursday, Sept. 17, with a Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day bash at the stadium. Other annual favorites returning to the promo schedule will include the following: a Dutch Wonderland pass giveaway for children on Saturday May 9; two Baseball in Education Days on consecutive Wednesdays, May 20 and 27; Senior Day presented by Capital Blue Cross on Wednesday, June 10; and Cylo’s Birthday celebration with Lancaster’s biggest pajama party on Sunday, June 14. The Barnstormers will have another Helicopter Candy Drop for children age 12 and under on Friday, June 26. Scout Night sleepovers will be held for the Girl Scouts on Saturday, June 13, and for the Boy Scouts on Friday, Aug. 7. Christmas in July is slated for Sunday, July 19, with Harry Potter Night on Friday, July 31. Weekly promotions will also be offered, including Military Mondays when the Barnstormers and Station House Tavern will honor the military with free tickets to all active members and veterans. ASSETS Plans Temporary Move ASSETS has announced that it will temporarily relocate one-half block north while its permanent home at Southern Market undergoes a renovation. The Southern Market project is underway, and the ASSETS office will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 20, and Friday, Feb. 21, as the organization relocates to the historic Yeates Building at 24 S. Queen St., Lancaster, where it will operate for 12 to 18 months. For years, the future of historic Southern Market has remained in limbo, but ASSETS has continued growing, even when it was the only organization left in the building. With the assurance of its permanent home, ASSETS is making plans for its new secondand third-floor office space and the hub for diverse entrepreneurs, social enterprises, B Corporations and impact-focused businesses that is envisioned for Southern Market. The renovation is not just about outfitting ASSETS’ space within Southern Market, but it is also about creating an office environment that furthers ASSETS’ mission to transform the community through inclusive entrepreneurship and ethical business.
