Millersville Woman’s Club To Host Garage Sale BY COURTNEY MENGEL

By 1957, the only women’s groups in the borough of Millersville were affiliated with churches. Four local women felt the need for a civic organization that would be open to all women of Millersville and surrounding areas. As a result, the four women established the Millersville Woman’s

Club, which became a member of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs in 1958. According to treasurer Linda Davis, the club’s most important activities are civic and philanthropic projects. In past years, the club has supported the Millersville Borough Community Park by buying equipment, donating funds, and planting flowers and memorial trees. The See Garage Sale pg 3

PMHS To Stage “The Addams Family - School Edition” s anyone familiar with the Addams family? Apparently, they’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky, and they’re coming to Penn Manor High School (PMHS). For this year’s spring musical, PMHS Thespian Troupe 274 will perform “The Addams Family School Edition,” which will be the first musical performed in the high school’s new Ranck Auditorium. Inspired by the black-and-white television show, “The Addams Family - School Edition” revolves around Wednesday Addams, who has grown up and fallen in love with a “normal” man, Lucas Beineke, who has never met her family. Having kept her love life a secret, Wednesday finally decides to let the two families meet before she and Lucas get married. The show is filled with shenanigans, romance, antics, and hilarious moments suitable for people of all ages.

“We had a director who, unfortunately, had to step down, so we were left with this gap in our program, and if it wasn’t filled, we weren’t going to have a production,” explained Elizabeth. “Mrs. C. stepped up and is sacrificing her time and her personal life for us to have this opportunity. We are so thankful.” “Having a music teacher direct the show is super helpful,” said Kaleb. “She shows us how the music ties into the scenes and the themes. It’s just a lot of good insight.” A senior citizen preview performance is slated for Thursday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m. This dress rehearsal is free to senior citizens with a Comet Classic card. “We have a lot of talent and for two years, we haven’t gotten to use it to the extent that we should have been able to, so I wanted to choose something with a huge lead cast where we could showcase all of the talent we have,” stated musical director and choral ensemble teacher Lauren Ciemiewicz. Principal cast members are Kaleb Kabakjian as Gomez Addams, Grace Fafel as Morticia Addams, Colin Rost as Uncle Fester, Elizabeth Lebo as Wednesday Addams, Amber Floyd as Grandma Addams, Ava Wolfersberger as Pugsley Addams, Maximillian Ponton as Lurch, David Ferre as Mal Beineke, Emily Witmer as Alice Beineke, and Jordan Smith as Lucas Beineke. More than 20 students make up the rest of the cast. This will be the first musical Ciemiewicz has directed. “It was a lot for me to try to take this on, as (the students) all know, but it’s been such a fun experience for me and they’ve just been amazing students to work with,” commented Ciemiewicz.

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a slideshow presentation on the history of mining in Lancaster County when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, in Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive.

The speaker will be geologist Jeri Jones. According to Jones, Lancaster County has historically contained and currently contains rich mineral resources, and with the county’s assorted geology, various mineral deposits have been formed. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Jones noted, Lancaster County saw mines removing iron, lead and zinc, chromites, nickel ores, building stone, slate, and limestone; more recently, quarries removing serpentine, limestone, and dolomite became numerous. Jones will take the audience on a photo tour of some of these key operations and conclude with a question-and-answer period. Jones has been involved with geology for 41 years. He is a Messiah University faculty member with an area of interest that includes the geology of southeastern Pennsylvania, as well as the owner of Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove. He also acts as a consultant to several quarries, serves as a guest columnist on earth science for a local newspaper, and travels the country conducting field trips for people of all ages. He is the author of five books; copies of the latest, “Geology of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail,” will be available at the meeting. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m. MAHS asks that all attendees wear masks. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. club helped the Millersville Lions Club establish the community swimming pool and provided equipment for the Millersville Fire Company. For many years, the club has organized picnics and Halloween and Christmas parties for the children of the former Mennonite Children’s Home. The club’s current projects include contributions to local Girl Scout troops, Blue Rock Fire Rescue, Millersville Area Historical Society, St. Paul Senior Citizen projects, Mennonite Central Committee, and Loft Community Partnership. Davis noted that the club focuses on education every year by funding scholarships and achievement awards for Penn Manor High School (PMHS) seniors, sponsoring a PMHS sophomore to attend the HOBY Leadership Seminar, and purchasing books for elementary school students. To continue its mission, the Millersville Woman’s Club will host an indoor garage sale at Millersville

Clawson Takes 4th in Regionals, Qualifies for States

The Comet grappler met his toughest competition in the semifinals where he suffered an 8-3 loss to eventual champ, and returning PIAA state champ, Kaedyn Williams, of Manheim Township. Clawson bounced back in the consolations, posting a 4-0 decision over CV’s Trent Ruble to get to the thirdplace bout against Wilson’s James Garcia. Down 4-3 after two periods, Clawson used a quick escape and a takedown in the finals seconds to force an extra period. Garcia, however, prevailed, grabbing the bronze with a takedown at the 32 second mark. “That was an exciting match,” said Vernalli. “Travis wrestled tough but lost in a quick scramble.” Competing at 160, Grassel also got off to a good start, opening with a 3:00 fall over Lower Dauphin’s Max Klingensmith but suffered the same fate in the quarterfinals, getting pinned by Macon Myers (Central York) at the 5:59 mark.

Grassel’s trip through the consolation bracket was short. He fell behind Hempfield’s Grant Hoover 4-0 in the first period and was down 9-3 heading into the third period before ending his season with a 9-5 loss. “Ty also wrestled well,” said Vernalli. “That match with Hoover was the rubber match. So far this year Grassel and Hoover were 1-1. He almost pulled off a major upset against the No. 3 seed in his second match. Overall, it was a good weekend.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball team traveled to Cedar Cliff as the underdogs Thursday, February 24. The undefeated Colts remained so with a 42-33 victory over the Comets in the District Three 6A quarterfinals. The hosts outscored their opponents by an average of 27 ppg before the matchup against the Comets so they did not exactly coast into the semifinals. Penn Manor played from behind for most of the game but rallied down the stretch, giving themselves an opportunity for the upset.

Down 33-20 early in the fourth, Manor made its move. Emily Riggs and Kamia Goodley scored on backto-back possessions and then Goodley drained a triple that cut the lead to 37-31 with 2:45 left. Morgan Miller followed with a layup that kept the lead at six, but Manor came up empty on its next two possessions and Cedar Cliff extended the lead with four free throws over the final two minutes. Free throws were key as the Colts canned 15-of-25 attempts, including 11-of-18 in the second half. The Comets struggled to get to the line and were a slim 3-of-6, all in the third quarter. Goodley led the Comets with 16 points, including nine of Manor’s 13 fourth quarter points. Lily Sugra and Miller combined for 13 points and Riggs chipped in with four. Alive in the consolation semifinals, Penn Manor traveled to Central York last Monday, Feb. 28, but failed to avenge a 45-23 season opening loss to the Panthers. “The past couple of years have been challenging regarding mental health, and painting has really been a saving grace,” stated Hornberger. “When my insides are swirling and I can’t seem to settle my thoughts, I turn to the canvas and am able to express what I cannot put into words.” One of the most unique aspects of the creative process, according to Hornberger, is being able to express oneself without having to use words. Painting gives her a safe space to lose herself in creating while being totally present at the same time. Hornberger views the finished product as a snapshot of what was going on in her internal and external environments in that moment in time. Her newest collection of colorful abstract paintings, titled “Finding Home,” will be on display in the main gallery at Mulberry Art Studios during the month of April. The public is invited to meet the artist and view the artwork at the opening reception, which will be held on Friday, April 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the gallery, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Since then, Hornberger has lived on the island of Hawaii, resided near the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, and settled among the thousands of acres of forest in the wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains. Over the years, she has worked on organic vegetable farms across the country and even attended massage school. Hornberger’s life has taken many paths, with painting coming and going during her travels. After moving to Lititz from a farm in Hawaii in 2017, Hornberger began painting more frequently again.

Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church, 3716 Main St., Conestoga, will host a hymn sing on Sunday, March 13, at 4 p.m. Hymn singing will be accompanied by organ, piano, trumpet, and guitar. Students age 8 and up who want to obtain onstage singing experience are invited to attend Discover Your Voice Camp this summer. Camp will be held at Sopranojam Music Studio (formerly Bella Voce Studio), 120 College Ave., Mountville, with sessions from Saturday, June 11, to Saturday, June 18, and from Sunday, July 10, to Sunday, July 17. Camp will run from noon to 4:30 p.m. most days. Features of the camp will include the Voice Color Wheel, a focus on stage presence and stage directions, arts and crafts, games, and activities. The last day of camp will feature a showcase performance, in which campers will perform a show; each student will participate in a feature presentation as well as group numbers with simple choreography, acting, and blocking. The camp is designed to equip young singing students in cultivating the gift of singing and performing publicly. Students will be given songs that suit their voice type, style, ability, and comfort level. They will receive step-by-step guidance as they work with a coach and progress from a small group setting to a larger group setting and from a small room to a stage with a microphone. There is a registration fee, with a discount for those who sign up by Saturday, April 30. Payment options are available for early registrants, as well. Space is limited, and registration will be open until camps are full. Additionally, there will be a tuition giveaway for two people to win a scholarship to Discover Your Voice Camp. There are four ways to enter, with people receiving one entry for each: they may register for camp by Friday, April 1, with winners having their fee refunded; they may refer friends or family members by tagging them on Sopranojam’s social media accounts or having them register for camp; they may follow @sopranojam on Facebook
