Penn Manor

Justbefore Christmas, Rowe Kenneson retired after a long career with Penn Manor School District’s transportation department. Kenneson drove bus No. 223 for 32 years, and taking over her route is her daughter, Kimberly Swisher. On Feb. 17, students and school staff members from the district presented Kenneson with cards and gifts to show their appreciation for her years of service.
Kenneson first became a bus driver after she was laid off from her full-time job in manufacturing, where she had worked for over a decade. Kenneson’s husband had been driving a bus since he was 20 years old and encouraged her to give it a try. “I didn’t think I could do it at first,” Kenneson said. “I started training and realized that I could manage it, and it worked out great.”
Working as a bus driver, she was able to spend more time with her two kids over the summers when school was out. Early in Kenneson’s career, her children were attending Central Manor Elementary School. While her first driving route was for LeTort Elementary School, she switched with another driver so that she could drive the route that her children took home from school.
“I always just tried to do my best. I would tell the parents the reason that I was a good bus driver was because I had good kids,” Kenneson said. “If you want respect from kids, you have to respect them. That’s why I think I did well.”
Kenneson said she didn’t take her job lightly. She realized that parents looked to her to make sure their kids got home safely every day and empathized with their concerns due to her own kids riding on her bus.
Last summer, when Kenneson decided to retire, Swisher decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a bus driver for the school district. Just like Kenneson when she first began her career, Swisher has two children at home and wanted to support her family with part-time work. Swisher took over Kenneson’s route at the beginning of the semester. “It was a relief because I knew who was taking over and I don’t have to worry about the kids,” Kenneson said.
Swisher already had some knowledge of bus driving from riding on her mother’s route as a child, but Kenneson has made sure that she is available to answer any questions her daughter might have while she learns the ropes. “What I wanted to impress on her is to treat all of the kids fairly. You like them all,” Kenneson said. “Sometimes you don’t like their behavior, but you like them all.”
BY CATHY MOLITORISMargaret Thatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the
Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.

Several years ago, two local families donated a large amount of money to The Salvation Army. The organization decided to use the donation to create The Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf Scholarship, which will benefit a select group of applicants from schools across the county.
The scholarship was created to assist students of low- to moderateincome households to receive a higher education, whether through earning a college degree or earning a trade. In order to be eligible to
receive the scholarship, students must be Lancaster County residents, demonstrate a need for financial assistance, have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and be graduating seniors, among other requirements. Each student must submit a high school transcript, an academic recommendation letter, a community service-related recommendation letter and a one-page essay describing his or her career goals. For more information, visit www.salvationarmylancaster.org or contact 717-397-7565. The deadline to submit an application is Monday, March 20.

Once students submit their applications and the necessary documents, The Salvation Army will review them and schedule an interview with the students who qualify at its location at 131 S. Queen St., Lancaster. During the interview, each student will describe his or her vision and career plan and detail what school and major he or she has in mind. The Salvation Army will provide assistance beyond the scholarship itself by helping the students to locate additional resources that will help with secondary
education.
“We believe in education and the next generation,” said Shady Boules, operations and development manager at The Salvation Army. “Going to college isn’t an easy decision to make and it’s not cheap. We believe that once students finish school and begin working, they will be in a position to give back to their communities.”
In previous years, The Salvation Army offered small scholarships to local students. The organization recently
welcomed aboard many new officers who have decided to make a more concerted effort to support students in the county. The Salvation Army’s goal is to continue to award the scholarship to 15 students in Lancaster County each year.
The Salvation Army offers various other programs to Lancaster County residents throughout the year. On Fridays, the organization distributes food to over 100 local families, providing them with a box of essentials such as bread, soup, sand-
wiches, rice and breakfast items. The Salvation Army also provides financial assistance to families that need help paying for rent and utilities. Through the nonprofit’s Pathway of Hope program, families can receive financial and life coaching resources through lessons that cover topics such as budgeting, applying to jobs and creating resumes.
“We hope that one day, the people who we help will give back to the community when they can by assisting those in need,” Boules said.

Penn Manor’s Corinne Smith, a bowler, and Travis Clawson and Riley Evans, both wrestlers, competed at the district level in their respective sport over the past week.
Smith wrapped up a fourthplace finish at the District Three singles championships held Saturday, February 25 at Clearview Lanes in Mt. Joy.
Forty girls competed in the tournament and after five qualifying rounds, the Comet junior found herself in fifth place with a 975 pin total, exceeding a top six finish needed to advance. Warwick’s Taylor Miller (1024) topped the qualifying rounds and eventually claimed the district crown.
Smith opened the afternoon portion of the tournament with a 12-pin victory over Elco’s Morgan Kline who finished fourth in the qualifying rounds but then battled Miller in the semifinals. Smith fell short 190-145.
“Morgan was the L-L champ by a mile,” noted head coach Chris Vital. “She opened with four strikes in a row and Corinne had two spares. She was down by 30 in the blink of an eye. I told her she needed to try something different, change balls. She was reluctant but made the switch and then threw six of the most perfect strikes I have ever seen,” he continued. “You can
never believe you are beaten. This was an awesome comeback.”
Also competing were Eva Brubaker (10th, 952), Lacey Slaymaker (11th, 923), and Kayla Wasche (12th, 904).
“Four of the top 12 bowlers were from Penn Manor,” praised Vital. “That’s a good omen for our next tournament, Regionals, where we need to finish top six as a team and top 12 individually to qualify for states. The girls are ranked second on the east side of the regional bracket.”
Representing the boys squad was Josh Stock who opened with a 192, 185 and 238 before struggling over the last two games. He finished in 31st place.
“Josh got off to a good start but lost a bit of mental toughness down the stretch,” said Vital.
Clawson and Evans, both juniors, represented the Comets at the PIAA 3A South Central/Regional wrestling championships at Spring Grove High School February 24-25 but both fell short in punching their ticket to the big dance.
Clawson, wrestling at 121, quickly advanced to the quarterfinals, pinning West York’s Nathaniel Brown in 1:37 in the opening round. He used that momentum to hang a 4-2 decision on Cael Rossi (Lower Dauphin) breaking a 2-2 tie in the sec-
ond period with an escape with 28 seconds remaining and using a third period escape to cap the scoring.
“Travis wrestled a smart match against Rossi,” noted head coach Brandon Vernalli. “We’ve seen him a few times this year but this is the first time they’ve wrestled each other.”
Clawson faced Daniel Boone’s Dean Houser, the eventual champ, in the semifinals. Clawson led 5-2 in the first period but struggled in the second, falling behind 8-6. Houser used three takedowns and a reversal, and gave up just three escapes in the third to advance with a 16-12 decision.
“That was an exciting, backand-forth match against a returning PIAA fifth place medalist,” said Vernalli. “Travis just fell a little short.”
Needing a consolationsemifinal victory to guarantee a trip to states, Clawson came up empty, suffering a 1:29 fall to Elijah Hewitt (Northeastern). Hewitt faced Warwick’s Marco Tocci in the battle for third and dropped a 10-0 major decision.
“That was a tough one,” said Vernalli. “There was no doubt in my mind that Travis was the better wrestler that match. It was tough for Travis. Last year he finished fourth and qualified for states. I think the 121-pound weight class was by far the toughest in the regional tournament, if not the entire state
this year. I’m confident he will bounce back and come back stronger next season.”
Evans’ tournament was a bit shorter. In a 107-pound weight class where the top four place winners were freshmen, Evans was pinned by both Justin Adams of York Suburban, the eventual sixth place finisher, and Red Land’s Sam Culp.
“Riley had a tough weekend but wrestled well,” said Vernalli. “This was his first regional tournament so now he has the experience of wrestling at a higher level. That will push him for his senior campaign.”
The girls’ basketball team wrapped up the 2022-23 season with an end-of-the-year banquet that honored seniors Sheridan Charles, Brin Groff, and Izzy Kligge.
Groff was the team’s second leading scorer with a 5.68 average and was their top three-point shooter, connecting 23 times for the season. Kligge averaged 5.41 ppg and dished out a team high 2.1 assists per game and snagged 2.9 steals per game.
Charles came off the bench and shot 70% from the foul line.
“I think we improved quite a bit offensively as the season went on,” said first year skipper Mike Glackin. “We started off barely scoring in the 20’s and our final average was about 32 ppg. Our turnovers
improved as well, going from 25 per game for the first half of the season to 18.5. Still too many, but a big difference.”
The Comets, with four freshmen running through the rotation, finished the season with an overall record of 5-17 and went 1-9 in Section One. Four of those losses were by seven points or less, including a pair of one-point defeats (Exeter and Cocalico).
“I think the highlight of the year was knocking off Hempfield on the road,” Glackin said. “And I thought we
played everyone in our section better the second time around, except Hempfield, which is also a sign of improvement.
“In general, I think we got the most out of each other this year,” he added. “Everyone did their best.”
Freshman Joelle Kroesen was the top rebounder, hauling in 4.8 per game while freshman Lilly Rineer led in scoring with a 6.2 ppg average. Carly Groff, a sophomore, finished with the highest shooting percentage at 32.

Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.
For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this position,” Zell said.
job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”
Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”
every member’s name and understanding their needs.”
For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”
That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”
and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “very competitive family football games.” Green and her husband are raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.
As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”

The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”

Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing
As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren.
