Dayspring To Welcome Metaxas And Cahn
Mitzvah Moms Give Back BY CATHY MOLITORIS
nspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19. “The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among

For 2021, Dayspring Christian Academy has chosen the theme “Return to the Foundation: Reviving the Seed of Our Nation” for its 11th Remember America Speaker Series event. Dayspring has also chosen to change its presentation format from individual speakers to an in-depth interview between two well-known authors. “Our events have always had a strong spiritual foundation, but we really sensed that the Lord was taking the lid off that this year,” said Dayspring headmaster Mike Myers. “The focus will truly be on revival for America.” Remember America, which will feature author and radio host Eric Metaxas interviewing pastor and author Jonathan Cahn, will be held on Saturday, May 1, at the Mitzvah Moms have a mission to help others, delivering gift baskets to people affected by COVID-19. other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained.
“The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more
donations than people to receive them. “It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also making a difference in their community. They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there

who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” Although they are currently focused on the pandemic, the pair said they plan to continue supporting others once COVID-19 is gone. “We’re already brainstorming ideas for our next projects,” Harting noted. “ We are looking at the longevity of Mitzvah Moms and continuing to give back.” The group is seeking both volunteers to help deliver baskets as well as nominations for recipients of baskets. As part of Historic Wrightsville Inc.’s efforts to serve the community in a COVID-safe manner, it will incorporate food trucks in three upcoming events. A wide variety of food truck vendors are sought. A “Spring Into Tastyville” takeout event will be held on Saturday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Hope United Methodist Church, 404 Hellam St., Wrightsville. The second annual Donation Yard Sale will be expanded this year to include food trucks. The
event will take place on Saturday, June 5, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wrightsville Historical Museum, 309 Locust St. The 46th annual Heritage Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11. Quarryville Library invites local youths to participate in the annual Fluor Engineering Challenge. This worldwide competition, developed as a collaboration between academia and technology companies, invites children to solve a problem using inexpensive materials. The challenge is designed the reinforce learning about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and it gives the library a chance to win $1,000. The competition began on Feb. 12 and will run through Friday, March 12. It is free to enter and is open to youths in kindergarten
Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 East Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, has announced the inauguration of a community outreach program called Ascension Academy. The mission of Ascension Academy is to provide educational music programs to students of all ages and levels. Individual lessons are being offered on the flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, and piano. Lessons on other instruments are also available. The faculty includes John Zielinski, music director at Ascension Church, and Janine Thomas, principal clarinetist of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. Theatre pit orchestra. Ascension Academy adheres to stringent COVID-19 safety guidelines. Lessons are taught in a large, air-filtered room with ample space for social distancing. Metaxas, the author of “Bonhoeffer,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Martin Luther,” is the host of the Eric Metaxas Radio Show and the creator of “Socrates in the City” events. Cahn is the author of “The Harbinger,” which compares the post-9/11 United States to ancient Israel, among other books. “(Cahn’s) books look at the biblical pattern the nations go through,” said Myers. “(The book of) Jeremiah (says that) ... God raises up or tears down (any nation) because of their alignment with His purposes or not.” Cahn is also the head of Hope of the World ministry, and he leads the Jerusalem Center/Beth Israel in Wayne, N.J. Dayspring events manager Lisa Becker said she believes the pair will present an important perspective. “We are beginning to see the stirrings of an awakening, and we feel the Lord has presented us with this opportunity to breathe into that,” she shared, noting that as author of “If You Can Keep It,” which explores the roots of the republic, Metaxas has an understanding of the founding of America on biblical values. Becker said she is looking forward to hearing him interview Cahn, based on the historical perspective Cahn has presented. Becker said the interview format was a decision inspired by the Holy Spirit. A board, made up of parents of Dayspring students and supporters of Dayspring’s mission, prays yearly for inspiration for speakers. “We set our hearts for the Lord and seek Him,” said Becker. “The combination of these two speakers came from one of our team members, and it was really divine inspiration.” Myers confirmed the importance of prayer to the foundation of the school

As successful local businesswomen, Megan Kalbach and Jacque Hess felt a pull to help others. The friends decided to use their experience and connections to create the Mountville Community Event. To be held Saturday, March 13, from noon to 6 p.m., the event will feature live music, food trucks, small businesses, crafters and more in Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. “ We both have had very successful careers in sales and marketing before the pandemic,” Kalbach said. “We felt a calling after helping with the Mountville Carnival’s food truck event last year. We felt God was calling us to help support local businesses. We saw small businesses struggling to get set up online this past year, struggling with figuring out how to do curbside pickup or to-go options. We had the knowledge, and so we just sat down and created MJ Small Business Squad.”
This is the first event MJ Small Business Squad is hosting, and Kalbach said attendees can expect a fun afternoon. “We’ll have more than 40 vendors and small businesses and lots of local churches with kids’ activities,” she stated. “Miss Agriculture USA will be there with kids’ games and Cosplayers Care will be doing photos with superheroes and princesses.” The Easter Bunny will be there, along with Mountville Fire Company, which will assist with parking by donation and hold a giveaway drawing. Sow and Sew mobile boutique will be on site, as will BTS Property Services, which will be bringing equipment for kids to explore. Additional participants include the Girl Scouts, Mountville Lions Club, Mountville Swim Team, Hempfield Education Association and Reality Church. “We’re doing this to support small businesses and give them the opportunity they need to get out there and work,” Kalbach explained.

A partnership with McCaskey High School in Lancaster permits students to participate in all of the school’s sports, including football, baseball, and swimming. During his sophomore and junior years, Zachary was the assistant section leader for the tenor section for Manor Singers and chorus; during his senior year, he was the section leader for the bass section of chorus. He also performed in the production of “The Wizard of Oz” during his junior year. Zachary was a member of the football team as a freshman and sophomore and was a member of the golf team as a senior. He is a four-year
member of the Civil War Club. In the community, Zachary volunteers for various organizations, including the Lancaster County Project for the Needy. Zachary plans to attend Penn State University to pursue a degree in secondary education. His goal is to become a secondary social studies teacher. Sebastian is the son of Robert and Kirsten Bookmiller of Millersville. He has consistently received honor roll recognition and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is also a member of the Model UN and the
Mock Trial team and is a Student Ambassador. Sebastian represented Penn Manor High School at National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) activities. He is a member of the orchestra, where he plays the violin, and he is a part of the varsity soccer team. Sebastian was selected as a 2020 Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 Academic All-Star. In the community, Sebastian participates in the Attollo Prep program and coaches soccer for Legacy Futures. Sebastian plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh to study political science and economics.

Machine Operators – Performs the cutting and machining process of the lumber to make the product. Cabinet Assembler – Assembles the components, basic fillers and end panels constructing cabinetry within specifications. Finishers/Sprayers – Will spray sealer top coat, stain and glaze the product on or off a tow line. Will operate a spray gun and agitator along with mixing catalyst. Candidates must have a proven work history, be detail oriented and able to read and interpret measurements and work orders. Previous manufacturing experience helpful or experience working in a wood manufacturing environment, construction, kitchen and bath design products industry or related field. Will be required to lift up to 50 lbs. The hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., with overtime required as needed.
