Bring Spring To Life At The Woodcarvers’ Festival

fter a two-year hiatus, the 47th annual Woodcarving and Wildlife Art Festival, hosted by the Lancaster County WoodCarvers Club, will return to Millersville on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will take place inside the Student Memorial Center at Millersville University, which is on the opposite side of the street from 101 Shenks Lane, Millersville. Masks will be required per Millersville University policy. Masks will be provided to those who do not have one. “I personally am just excited to have the show back and see friends and meet new friends,” said Ben Hershey, chairman of the festival. Hershey has been affiliated with the festival since 2009 but has been carving for 39 years.
Beginner Carver Fund and one local nonprofit organization. Door prizes of carvings done by the Lancaster County WoodCarvers will be awarded regularly throughout the festival, and a competition will be open to exhibitors and club members only. Entries must be submitted by 8 p.m. on Friday, March 11. The Lancaster County WoodCarvers Club meets monthly on the third Tuesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster. Open carve sessions take place on the first Thursday of each month from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. There is a fee to attend the festival. Free admission will be given to children under the age of 15, high school and college students, veterans, and those active in the military. For more information, visit www.lancarvers.com.

Kirk, an activist and radio show host, founded Turning Point USA with Bill Montgomery in 2012, and he currently serves as CEO of Turning Point Action and Turning Point Faith. Turning Point USA is a nonprofit organization with chapters promoting conservative values on high school, college, and university campuses. Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone said that organizers have been hoping to have Kirk participate in Remember America. “As I was praying through our short list (of speakers) … I felt education is prominent in people’s thinking right now,” said Stone. “It’s a great time to highlight how education is such an important part of what our country is going through.” Stone noted that it seemed natural to choose Kirk to speak on the importance of education in restoring the country to biblical values. The theme of this year’s event is “Faith. Courage. Liberty.” “It starts with faith (because) in today’s world, Christians are being put in a position where they will choose to be courageous or not,” said Stone. We are calling people to choose courage, and liberty will be the result.” Becker agreed, noting that the theme reflects the study of the country’s foundation, which

The Veritas Community will enter into Lent with an Ash Wednesday worship gathering on March 2 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. This gathering will include musical worship, silent reflection, individual and communal repentance, a message, and the imposition of the ashes. On Sundays during Lent, the Veritas Community will gather at 10:30 a.m. at HUB 450 to go through a series titled “The Deeply Formed Life,” which asks, “What does it look like to live a life that is deeply rooted and formed in the way of Jesus?” The series will explore five transformative spiritual values and practices. The schedule is as follows: March 6, Contemplative Rhythms; March 13, Racial Justice; March 20, Interior Examination; March 27, Sexual Wholeness; and April 3, Missional Presence. On April 10, attendees will gather around the table to see how the table forms them in the way of Jesus. Daniel Foltz has been named to the dean’s list at Villanova University, Villanova, for the fall 2021 semester. Foltz earned a 4.0 grade point average in the Villanova School of Business, where he intends to double major in economics and accounting. Celebrating the birthday of composer and organist Johann Sebastian Bach, the historic 1854 First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will present a First Friday concert, “Bach’s Birthday Bash,” on Friday, March 4. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m., and the 30-minute concert will begin at 8 p.m. Organist Larry Hershey will play the 1958 analog Allen organ and will be joined by trumpeter Doug Albert. The all-Bach program will include “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” from Cantata 147 and “Air” from Orchestral Suite No. 3. Civil Air Patrol Presents Awards Three local adult members of Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 Civil Air Patrol were recognized by Pennsylvania Wing’s Group 2. The group commander, Maj. Gregg A. Rubright, Robesonia, presented the awards at the conclusion of the annual conference held virtually due to COVID-19. Capt. Gregory Sollenberger of Quarryville was named the Group 2 Aerospace Education Officer of the Year. He is the squadron’s deputy commander for seniors as well as the aerospace education officer and chief of information technology. Senior Master Sgt. Glenn
Knight of Lititz was named Professional Development Officer of the Year for the group. He also serves as a national chair for CAP’s Volunteer University. Tech. Sgt. LCCD Scholarships Available The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) will offer two $1,000 scholarships to Lancaster County high school seniors in 2022. Applications will be accepted from students continuing their education in the 2022-23 school year with the intent of majoring in a curriculum that focuses on natural resources and/or conservation. Examples of acceptable programs of studies include environmental sciences; wildlife and/or fisheries biology; and environmental resource management. The program must lead to a postsecondary degree such as an associate degree or
baccalaureate degree. Selection will be determined based on past performance and activities, current school and community involvement, future purpose and direction, and communication skills. Prior to the final selection, the scholarship committee will interview the top candidates. The completed application must be received in the LCCD office by Thursday, March 31. AMT Nominated For Theater Of The Year The Academy of Country Music announced the nominations for the 57th Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards on Feb. 10. Lancaster County’s American Music Theatre (AMT) was selected as a nominee in the Theater of the Year category. This marks the second time that AMT has been honored with an ACM nomination. One of five venues in the nation competing for the award, AMT is the only theater in Pennsylvania to be nominated this year. Other nominees are Andrew J. Brady ICON Music Center, Cincinnati, Ohio; Blue Gate Performing Arts Center, Shipshewana, Ind.; Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, Fla.; and Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, Tenn. Known for its wide variety of performances, AMT features both touring concerts and original shows. Since 1997, the 1,600-seat venue has hosted numerous legendary country artists such as Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Vince Gill, Alabama, George Jones, Randy Travis, Merle Haggard, Charlie Daniels and Marty Stuart
along with some of today’s stars like Scotty McCreery, Josh Turner, Jennifer Nettles, Trace Adkins, Chris Janson, Martina McBride and Gary Allan.
