Penn Manor

OnFeb. 10, students and volunteers from Penn Manor High School delivered several raised beds to Hambright Elementary School, 3000 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. The delivery was the first piece of a venture to install an interactive garden for the school’s students. The Hambright Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) has partnered with nonprofit The Edible Classroom for the project, and students and teachers from across Penn Manor School
District are contributing to it. The raised beds were constructed by students from Penn Manor High School who are in the Intro to Agriculture Mechanics class. Now that the beds have been delivered, Hambright students’ next goal is to fill them with dirt. Once the soil is delivered, each student will gather to fill the beds one bucket at a time.
“That’s the next part of the adventure. All of the kids are so excited about the project; it’ll be a whole school party when we fill the beds,” said Lauren Weaver, a member of Hambright PTO.
The idea for the project came after Lauren’s daughter, Emma, attended The Edible Classroom’s summer camp. Emma is a fourthgrader at Hambright Elementary School and began her own fundraising efforts for the project by selling golf balls at a local golf course with one of her classmates. Lauren began sharing ideas on how to support the project with Emma’s teacher at school, and the excitement for the project spread. Now, nearly a dozen teachers are independently fundraising alongside the PTO.
“It’s an exciting project that’s bringing us all together. Things have been challenging the past couple years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and cancellation of our events,” Lauren said. “It’s nice to have the support.”
The Hambright PTO will cover the maintenance fees for the project and has begun to collect recyclable materials to raise money. Some teachers at the school are engaged in grant writing and other community fundraising methods, while the garden club organizes fundraising events.
Many of Hambright Elementary School’s fundraising efforts are to cover the expenses for The Edible Classroom’s curriculum. The school has over 600 students and hopes to provide each class with a lesson from The Edible Classroom. “The kids are so excited to have something outside in the area where they take their breaks,” Lauren said. “Fourth-grade students have even been doing their own advertising by making videos to spread the word.”
On Friday, March 24, the garden club will host a bingo night at the cafeteria of Hambright Elementary School. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the game will begin at 6 p.m. The event is open to families of students at Hambright Elementary School and their children. BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn the third Monday of each month, the Lancaster County Postcard Club meets at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. During the meetings, which are open to the public, members gather to discuss postcards on a wide variety of topics. Each meeting features a specific theme and includes a talk from a guest speaker who focuses on that theme.
In January, the club creates a schedule of which themes will be incorporated throughout the year, and the topic of the club’s meetings can be anything from railroads to boats to hometowns. For its meeting in January, the club had members share postcards relating to their favorite holidays. On Feb. 20, the topic of the meeting was cartoons and humor, and attendees participated in a member’s market to buy and sell postcards.

Veronica Jimenez, lay counselor, volunteer prison chaplain, and author of the Sound Mind Awareness curriculum, is known for the classes she teaches at churches and recovery houses and for her counseling ministry. Jimenez’s journey to this place, however, has been hard-won and filled with twist and turns.
Originally from the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City, Jimenez suffered abuse from an early age. “I learned shame and rage very early,” Jimenez recalled, noting her situation created the “perfect storm for mental
illness.” “I wasn’t a healthy kid,” she said. “My heart, soul, mind, and spirit were all affected.” When Jimenez was a teenager, her anger became such an issue, she was sent to live in a girls’ home for a year. “That’s where I developed a heart for the incarcerated,” she said.
Around age 11, Jimenez remembers attending a Metro World Child Sunday school run by pastor Bill Wilson. “That’s where I first heard that God has a son named Jesus who loves children,” said Jimenez, who noted that at that time the grace of God first touched her life. “I still lived in a bad environment, but I learned to pray,” she said.

Jere Greider of Mountville has been a member of the postcard club for over 20 years, first becoming interested in them while adding to his collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. After Greider found a CocaCola postcard, he began to shift his focus to collecting postcards from around Lancaster County.
Greider is now a postcard dealer and participates in several yearly shows where postcard enthusiasts come together to buy and sell items for their collections. During the shows, around 25 postcard dealers present boxes of cards that are organized by topic. A buyer will often look for postcards from specific locations, such as his or her hometown or alma mater. Before the advent of different technolo-
gies in the 19th century, postcards were a way for travelers to remember a location they visited without a camera. Many people also used them to communicate with others who lived nearby before the invention of the telephone, as a way to stay connected with each other. Today, postcards are primarily found in tourist attractions, but many vintage cards still circulate in antique stores and on the internet.
“Postcards cover every topic imaginable,” Greider said. “We have so many antique stores and outlets here in central Pennsylvania where you can find them.” Besides combing through local antiques stores, Greider often finds items to add to his collection by searching for postcards on websites like eBay. Throughout his many years spent collecting postcards, Greider has learned more about the market and what people are seeking. Currently, he is focused on collecting postcards that originate from the Mountville area and the surrounding towns.
During the March meeting, set for Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will share postcards from various places of worship. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Postcard Club” on Facebook.
Six Comet wrestlers competed in the District Three Class 3A Section 2 tournament at Hempfield on Saturday, February 18. Two still have a shot at qualifying for the big dance.
Travis Clawson settled for a silver medal while Riley Evans followed in third place. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced. As a partial team, the Comets finished 12th overall.
“Things went pretty much as expected,” said head coach Brandon Vernalli, knowing a full squad was not competing.
Clawson, wrestling at 121, got a bye in the round of 16 and opened with a 1:02 quarterfinals fall over Elizabethtown’s Francis Burke. His semifinal matchup against Central Dauphin’s CJ Ferree went the distance and resulted in a 7-2 decision. Clawson led 4-0 after two periods and stretched it to 6-zip before closing out the win.
In the finals he faced a familiar foe in Warwick’s Marco Tocci. The two battled in the L-L League tournament final with Tocci pulling ahead 5-4. Tocci again rose to the top. He led 2-1 in the first and 4-1 heading into the third period. Clawson scored a reversal but gave up an escape to cap the 5-3 loss.
“It was another exciting match,” said Vernalli. “He just came up short. I really believe he’ll punch his ticket to states.”
Clawson currently sits at 29-4.
Wrestling at 107, Evans also worked a fall in his opening bout, turning a 4-2 lead into a 1:06 quarterfinals fall over Manheim Central’s Blake Fasnacht.
In the semifinals, however, Evans went up against eventual champ Thunder Beard, of Central Dauphin, and was pinned in 1:44, thus dropping to the consolations. There he regrouped and broke a 2-2 tie against Solanco’s Caden Rutt and scored a 2:37 fall to grab the bronze. Rutt had pinned Evans in dual meet action back on January 11.
“It was good to see Riley punch his ticket to districts for the first time,” said Vernalli, “and avenge that earlier loss to Rutt.”
Placing at the tournament but not advancing was Gabe Midile and Ethan Farmer. Both settled for sixth place finishes.
Midile (114) won his round of 16 battle via a 13-3 major decision over Elizabethtown’s Hayden Best and then pulled out an 8-7 thriller over Hempfield’s Michael Karpathios. Clinging to a 4-3 lead after two periods, both wrestlers went back-and-forth in the third, each scoring four points. Midile’s takedown with 12 seconds remaining provided an 8-6 edge.
In the semifinals, Midile faced eventual champ Kaedyn Williams, of Manheim Township, and suffered a 1:12 fall.
He was pinned in 2:51 by eventual third place champ Luke Hitchcock (Central Dauphin) and then fell short 5-4 against McCaskey’s Hezekiah Molina-Hadgu for the chance for fifth.
Farmer’s path was similar. He opened with an 8-7 round of 16 decision over Palmyra’s Stephen Stine, scoring the winning takedown with four seconds remaining. In the quarterfinals he was pinned by Hempfield’s Zy McCainMurray, a 10-4 winner over Farmer during dual meet action in December.
Farmer rebounded with a 4:30 fall over Milton Hershey’s Jaydean Compean and then scored a 5-4 ultimate rideout over Hershey’s Sullivan Weader, taking the victory with an escape in the seventh period.
In the consi-semis, however, Farmer was pinned by Township’s Zach Landis in 55 seconds and then met up with McCain-Murray again, this time falling short 12-4.
“It was great to see Gabe and Ethan get a couple of wins at sectionals,” said Vernalli. “Gabe fell just short in his battle for third and Ethan had a nice bounce back after taking some time off with an injury.”
BOWLING
Also competing in the postseason, eight Comet bowlers qualified for the LancasterLebanon League Singles Bowling Championships. The girls competed at Palmyra Bowling on Thursday, February 16
while the boys were at Leisure Lanes the following day.
“The girls had a pretty good day,” said head coach Chris Vital. “They showed up and did their thing.”
Lacey Slaymaker, Corinne Smith and Eva Brubaker all finished in the top ten after six qualifying rounds with impressive pin totals. Slaymaker finished at 1103, Smith hit 1092 and Brubaker was at 1048.
“Kayla Wasche (1003) was just two pins shy of moving on,” recalled Vital. “If she qualified, we would have had four Penn Manor bowlers in the top ten. Abigail Nesmith (968) was 12th, giving us five in the top 12. Pretty impressive.” Also competing was Hope Leaman (785) in 26th place out of 36 bowlers.
Smith opened the stepladder finals with a 191-177 win over Lampeter-Strasburg’s Katie Pope and Brubaker got past Ella Eberle (Elizabethtown) 165-148. Slaymaker also won, topping CV’s Jocelyn Rose 202-156.
That put Smith against McCaskey’s Julee Getz, who won 208-145, while Brubaker and Slaymaker were pitted against each other with Slaymaker edging her teammate 179-168.
“That was tough,” said Vital of two of his players fighting to advance.
Slaymaker then topped Getz 169-142 before settling for third place overall with a 209-178 loss to Warwick’s Taylor Miller, who finished second.
Smith followed in fifth
place and Brubaker was sixth.
“So, three of the top six bowlers in the league are from Penn Manor,” Vital noted.
Elco’s Morgan Kline rolled a 1405 six game total and finished in first place.
Josh Stock and Chris Hull competed on Friday. Both failed to make the top ten.
Hull (993) finished in 40th place out of 55 and Stock, with a 1072 total, was 23rd.
“Josh was on the same pair as three of Hempfield’s top bowlers,” Vital said. “They held four of the top ten averages in our league and none of them qualified for the finals. That was a little disheartening. Josh was 17 pins off the cut with two games to go. He had a chance going into the last game, so he was closer than what the score indicated.”
When Jimenez met her husband, her life changed. She had been told she could not have children, but she prayed for a miracle because she saw how her husband loved children. “That was the first miracle I ever prayed for and received,” said Jimenez, who eventually had five children.
In 2010, Jimenez and her family moved to Lancaster with the goal of making a fresh start, but Jimenez experienced flashbacks, nightmares, and migraines. Marital problems appeared. Jimenez prayed for God to bring her a friend she could confide in. “God sent Brenda Green of Freedom
Prayer Ministries and In the Light Ministries of Lancaster,” said Jimenez. Green worked in conjunction with a Christian doctor, and Jimenez responded positively to the treatment. “That combination … was so effective, I was healed in 2012,” Jimenez stated.
Green recognized Jimenez’s gift for teaching. Jimenez began to teach classes, eventually developing Sound Mind Awareness - based on the principles of repentance, renewal, reconnection, and retraining. In 2017, she began volunteering as a prison chaplain and branching into offering counseling by donation. She now
teaches classes at ACTS Covenant Fellowship, 1927 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster. Her first online class will begin Wednesday, March 1. For

The young Comets beat Ephrata 35-19, Northeastern 54-17 and Conestoga Valley via forfeit. The wins capped the team’s season at 14-4.
The head coach of the team is Jen Kroesen. Team members include Nevaeh Kennedy, Kendall Burger, Marcela Mendoza, Genesis Avila, Gianna Newton, Audrey Martin, Ava Rothenberger, Jade Durborow, Emma Eckert, Tessa Wolf and Aubrey Rineer.

Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraiser meal at Ethiopian Evangelical Church, 175 Church St., Landisville, on Saturday, March 11, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Traditional Ethiopian meals will be available to purchase for curbside pick up, and proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit organization’s humanitarian efforts in Harar, Ethiopia.
Each meal will offer a choice of three Ethiopian dishes: doro wat, a spicy chicken stew; misir wat, containing spiced red lentils; atakilt wat, a cabbage and potato stew; and kik alicha, a stew with split peas. Injera, a type of Ethiopian flatbread, will be served with each dish.
Siloam Ethiopia’s founder, Wegayhu Ketema, recently returned from a five-week mission trip to Harar. The organization operates a free medical clinic for those in the city who are homeless or in need of treatment. Ketema was accompanied by Kari Oftedal, Jason Craig, Faith Higley and Patrick Engle of Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster. Community Fellowship Church has
been financially supporting Siloam Ethiopia’s projects and trips to Harar for the last three years.
Oftedal, who is a doctor at Lancaster General Health, saw 35 to 40 patients each day at the free clinic. “She was extraordinary with her compassion and her care,” Ketema said. Siloam Ethiopia also partnered with Vision Care Ethiopia, a ministry based in Landisville that seeks to meet the optical needs of those in Ethiopia. Ketema and the other volunteers sorted, cleaned and distributed 150 pairs of glasses to residents of Harar during their trip.
During the trip, the volunteers in the group also spent time engaging with a girls’ orphanage in Harar. Higley assisted with organizing the storage room and its contents and taught the girls at the orphanage how to fashion washable sanitary pads, as many of the girls often cannot afford disposable ones. Engle helped to construct shelves for the storage room, and each member of the team spent time engaging with the kids at the orphanage.
“We wanted to spend time
bonding with the kids and letting them know that they’re cared for,” Ketema said. “Every morning we had breakfast with them and take them out of the orphanage for a little while.”
Ketema arrived in Harar ahead of the other volunteers to prepare for the various projects that they would be work-
ing on. This is the first time that Ketema has been joined by a team of volunteers to assist with the clinic and orphanage, and the rest of the team spent a total of 10 days in Harar.
To reserve a meal for the fundraiser, call 717-669-0930. For more information on Siloam Ethiopia, visit https://siloamethio.netlify.app/.
The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to attend a presentation on “Canal Engineering,” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, in Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. The doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.
The presenter will be Benton Webber, Lancaster Township municipal engineer and amateur historian, whose focus is on Lancaster County’s landscape and infrastructure.
Providing a bit of back-
ground for his slideshow, Webber noted that following the Revolutionary War, inland navigation improvements offered
enormous benefits for transportation, changed the way in which governments and private entities worked together
and forged the underpinnings for how construction projects are accomplished, while also altering the landscape.

His PowerPoint will cover, among other issues, where several critical and unique canals were created, who was involved, how they were created and why and what happened to them. Although there will be a concluding question-and-answer session, Webber will encourage discussion throughout the presentation.
Webber, a Lancaster County native, is president of the Manheim Township Historical Society and chair of the Manheim Township General Municipal Authority. He graduated from Manheim Township schools, Hamilton College and Lehigh University. In two previous talks for MAHS, Webber and Donald Kautz of Uncharted Lancaster discussed the Conestoga Navigation Company and its impact on the waterway itself.
Admission is free, but donations will be appreciated. For more information, contact Phil Gerber at 717872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com.
