BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDEvery year, the Central Manor Elementary School (CMES) PTO traditionally hosts two dances: one for mothers and sons and the other for fathers and daughters. Due to a shortage of volunteers, the PTO decided to shake things up this year by combining the two dances to create a groovy new fundraiser.
On Feb. 9, CMES students and their parents broke out the bellbottoms and showed off their finest moves on the dance floor for the inaugural Disco and Desserts. Throughout the evening, students from kindergarten to sixth grade enjoyed treats, played games, and boogied beneath the disco ball in the gymnasium of the school, which is located at 3717 Blue Rock Road, Washington Boro.
“The kids had a lot of fun,” said Lucy Gwyn, vice president of the CMES PTO. “It was a well-controlled event, but it was also an environment where
they could have fun and enjoy themselves.”
To ensure the gymnasium had enough space for everyone to get their groove on, the dance was held in three stages. Separate time slots were reserved for students from kindergarten to

second grade, third and fourth grades, and fifth and sixth grades. The designated blocking allowed younger students to have fun without thinking about the opinions of their older schoolmates, and the fifth- and sixthgraders were given extra time on the dance floor to celebrate their final year at CMES.
Desserts was a success, the PTO already has plans to improve it.
Many parents expressed that they missed the former daddydaughter and mother-son dances, so Gwyn said the group plans to incorporate one of each special dance next year. CMES PTO also plans to modify the timeslots for the next dance to better accommodate the number of participants, as the school has nearly 600 students.
In addition to the dance fundraisers, CMES PTO partners with various restaurants such as Panera Bread and Moe’s Southwest Grill throughout the year.
Once a month, a different restaurant provides a designated code for students and their families to use when placing an order. A percentage of the restaurant’s proceeds is then donated to the PTO, which uses the funds to pay for student enrichment projects such as field trips and classroom materials.

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThis year, Penn Manor High School (PMHS), 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville, will present “Beauty and the Beast” as its spring musical. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on
Friday, March 15, and Saturday, March 16, and a 2 p.m. matinee will also be held on Saturday. Penn Manor School District staff members will receive free admission for the opening night of the show on Thursday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m.

Celebrating all things Irish on stage
BY CATHY MOLITORISImmerse yourself in the world of Irish music and dance when the Paloma Performance Troupe presents a Celtic Dance Extravaganza. The event will be held on Saturday, March 2, at Leffler Chapel on the Elizabethtown College campus, 1 Alpha Drive. Performances will be at 3 and 6:30 p.m.
“This will be a full production, with costume changes,

smoke machines,” said Esther Pujol, owner of Paloma Dance Company. “There will be 50 performers - kids and adults - in the show.”
The performance will feature soft- and hard-shoe dances as well as acts that spotlight performers who dance while also playing the fiddle. One of the performers will present fire poi, a type of dance that incorporates fire strings. A traditional Irish ceili band will also entertain.

Penn Manor’s freshman girls’ basketball team, consisting of eighth graders, competed in the eighth-grade division of the middle school tournament at Spooky Nook the weekend of Feb. 10 and 11. Guided by head coach Jen Kroesen, the team posted wins over Solanco (46-12), Ephrata (30-25) and Donegal (25-21) to capture the division championship. The team includes (front, from left) Mia Skiadas, Natalie Long, Tessa Wolf, Kendall Burger, (back) Emma Eckert, Avery Robinson, Marcela Mendoza, Gianna Newton, Leah Swanson, Peyton Markley and Harlem King.

gone on to become professional dancers. “They are going to be watching the future.”
Tickets for the event will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance by searching for “Celtic Dance Extravaganza” on Eventbrite.

“We decided to do something above and beyond that,” she said of the impetus to start the performance troupe, which she describes as “mini Riverdance.”
At the Elizabethtown performance, dancers from the Baltimore branch of Doherty Petri will join Lancaster students on stage, and Pujol said the show will feature some impressive talent.
“We have dancers that are in the top five in North America, the top five in Great Britain,” she said. “We have a couple of people who will be competing in world championships. These are really great dancers.”
Pujol grew up in a family of Irish dancers. Her grandmother was a champion Irish dancer from Ireland. “I have always loved Irish dance,” she said. “It’s exciting to see how much interest in it has grown.”
She emphasized that audiences are in for an entertaining show that may offer a peek at what’s to come for some of the performers.
“These kids are incredibly talented, and they put on an amazing show. Audiences are lucky to see what these dancers can do,” she said, noting that her students have

“Beauty and the Beast” from pg 1
While searching for a production to serve as the 2024 spring musical, director Lauren Ciemiewicz said she wanted to choose a production that the community is familiar with. Although the theater program at PMHS is partially funded by the school district, the department relies on proceeds from the spring musical to cover expenses such as licensing costs for next year’s production. “Beauty and the Beast” was last performed at the school 15 years ago, and Ciemiewicz learned that the show’s licensing will be unavailable after 2024. “It’s really exciting that we can do it one more
time before it goes into the vault,” Ciemiewicz added. Rehearsals began immediately after the school’s winter break in January. Unlike many previous productions at PMHS, “Beauty and the Beast” places a heavy emphasis on costumes due to its fanciful cast of characters. Instead of casting separate actors for different scenes, Ciemiewicz has structured the show to have one ensemble of students play multiple parts. Although the format will allow singers and dancers to have additional stage time, it has also presented cast members with the challenge
of navigating their many costume changes. PMHS students David Ferre, Kaleb Kabakjian and Madelyn Stern will play the lead roles of Cogsworth, Lumiere and Belle, respectively. The role of the Beast will be played by Cameron Thorne.
“It’s a show that everyone knows, so it’s generated a lot of excitement from the start,” Ciemiewicz said. “I still needed to teach students the vocal parts, but everybody knows the music.” In addition to directing the musical, Ciemiewicz serves as the choral director at PMHS.
PMHS will host a Meet the Characters Tea Party from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. During the event, guests will have an opportunity to take pictures with costumed cast members, participate in various games and activities and tour the set on stage. Attendees may also visit several stations to learn about what goes on behind the scenes in preparation for showtime. Registration is required and must be completed online prior to Friday, March 1.

Manor High School or Lancaster County Career & Technology Center. The gowns will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Friends to display artwork at Ware Center
In honor of Women’s History
Month, the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host an exhibit of artworks by Millersville University (MU) alumnae Kerry Sacco and Ann Thomas in the Regitz Gallery. The exhibit, “Connections and Pathways,” will open with a reception on Frist Friday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., during which visitors may meet the artists and view the collection.
In this exhibition, Sacco and Thomas interpret the complexity of nature and celebrate 40 years of friendship through connections and pathways to the landscape of their worlds.
Both artists graduated with art degrees from MU, but their initial path did not follow the painting route. Sacco pursued graduate studies in lithography at MU and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. During that time, she began to

appreciate works by the Pennsylvania Impressionists, which led to further studies of oil painting. Her landscapes in the upcoming exhibition focus on well-known local subjects, and the artworks are notable for their composition, color, and brushwork.
Upon graduating from MU, Thomas focused on architecture, interior design, and other entrepreneurial pursuits. A decade ago, after raising two daughters, she embraced the one medium that had eluded her: oil

painting. Primarily self-taught, she creates landscapes that explore the beauty that surrounds her home in Hunterdon County, N.J., and in Bucks County.
The exhibition will be on view through Friday, March 29. The gallery is open daily. For more information, call 717-871-7814.

The speaker will be retired Air Force Col. Ed Hurston, who is a member of the MOAA Lancaster Chapter. Hurston will speak about the challenges of beekeeping operations. He and his wife, Ellen, began beekeeping in 2017 and now produce local honey and other honey-related products.
All current and past military officers are invited. Reservations are required by Friday, March 1, by contacting Dennis Benchoff at 717-560-1260 or dlbenchoff2@comcast.net. Visit www.moaalancasterchapt.org for additional information.
