Located at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville, the Loft Community Partnership (LCP) aims to alleviate poverty within Penn Manor School District by creating a centralized location for residents to benefit from various services, including food, clothing, toiletries, referrals for transportation, and other services in the areas of finances and education. To accomplish this goal,

LCP strives to partner with agencies within Lancaster County and help them to meet the needs of families within the district.

After completing a needs assessment and discovering that there is a lack of transportation in the district, LCP searched for ways to bring resources to those who reside in the southern part of the Penn Manor area. Then along came a partnership with Martic Pantry, Kitchen Cupboard, and Bare Essentials.

Stepping On The Brakes After 34 Years With Millersville Area Meals On Wheels fter 34 years with Millersville Area Meals on Wheels (MAMOW), Esther and Roy Hess have taken the keys out of the ignition and passed their driving route on to a new deliverer, Bill Archibald.

Located at 121 N. George St., Millersville, MAMOW was founded in 1988 with the mission of delivering meals to people who live in the Penn Manor School District and are temporarily or permanently ill or handicapped, are elderly and living alone or homebound, or are convalescing.

Before MAMOW began its operation, Esther was a deliverer for Lancaster Meals on Wheels, which she began in 1985. Roy, an elementary school teacher for the Penn Manor School District, rode along with Esther when he was available. They even took their kids with them from time to time. Ever since Roy retired in 1997, he has been fully involved with MAMOW as a driver with Esther. The Hesses met at

Archibald rode along with them to learn the route.

“We’re going to miss our clients, (MAMOW executive director) Joanne and (MAMOW assistant director) Cheryl, and the people in the kitchen,” stated Esther. “The Friday cook, Sally Stratigos, always made extra of her recipe for pastitsio - that’s a Greek dish - and gave it to us. We will miss that!”

Esther noted that they don’t have any big plans at the moment, but Roy suspects that they will do some vacationing with their family.

“Meals on Wheels is a fantastic organization that has touched the lives of many people,” commented Roy. “The meals are well prepared, delicious, and nutritious. We commend them very highly.”

Messiah College in 1959 and were married in 1963. Although Esther was born and raised in Ohio, she and Ray decided to settle down in Lancaster County and have been here ever since.

“I think one of the things that is extremely important is we got into homes where people were living alone and they probably didn’t get very much company, so we may have brought them some joy by delivering meals,” explained Roy. “I think my wife has done a fantastic job taking responsibility all of these years for getting drivers and their cooperation. She has been relentless in pursuing the responsibilities she has been given, and I admire her.”

Esther coordinated the route they drove to deliver the meals, which covered the townships of Manor, Martic, Pequea, and Conestoga. “I liked getting out into the community in the Southern End,” said Esther.

“It’s beautiful down there. We’ve met really lovely people and super friendly dogs over the years.”

The Hesses’ last day was Feb. 11.

Representatives from Martic Pantry, Kitchen Cupboard, Bare Essentials, and Loft Community Partnership enjoy serving the community.

For more than 40 years, Hermansader has been making his mark on the art world, creating paintings of churches, houses, bridges, schools and more. Now 71, he’s selling his originals and hoping to find buyers in the area so the works can remain close to home.

“I’d like my paintings to go to the places they feature,” he stated. “It’s a recorded piece of history.”

Hermansader started dabbling in art as a child.

“My dad was a painter, and ever since I was about 5 years old, I’ve been drawn to it,” he recalled. “It was almost like watching a magic show. He’d start with white paper, put a few strokes down and the next thing you know, it’s the beginning of a painting.”

He first pursued art school, attending the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, but soon realized it would not be easy to make a living as an artist. He transferred to Kutztown University and earned a degree in art education before moving to Columbia and teaching art at Columbia High School from 1973 to 1989.

Although he enjoyed teaching, he still had a passion to paint, and he created his first painting of a local site -

Wright’s Ferry Mansion in Columbia - in 1981. “I put the print on display at the market house in Columbia to see if I could sell it, but I wasn’t sure how it would be received,” he said. “I ended up taking orders for 54 prints in the first two days.”

Encouraged that perhaps he could eventually make a living as an artist, Hermansader kept painting, finding inspiration all over the county and beyond.

He spends about 300 hours working on each painting, paying painstaking attention to detail from multiple photos he takes at the site. “Every brick, every stone in each building is exact,” he stated. “Nothing is estimated. I may be off by one, but I kind of doubt it.”

In his painting of the Strasburg Rail Road, for example, he remembers counting 169 fence posts. His painting of the Veterans Memorial Bridge is exact down to the bridge’s bolts. His attention to detail and his focus on local landmarks has earned Hermansader an award from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.

Subjects of Hermansader’s work include Donegal Presbyterian Church, Wheatland, the Fulton Theatre, the Hans Herr House and Linden Hall. He recently sold an original of the Conestoga House to its new owner and is in the process of selling a painting of Lititz Moravian Church to a Lititz resident.

Although he admits he has slowed down a bit with his painting, he is still finding local inspiration. He’s currently working on a

painting of Steinman Park in downtown Lancaster.

And he can’t imagine giving up what he loves anytime soon.

“I must have something with my brain and my eye, because when I see certain colors or patterns, I’m happy,” he said. “I’ve been

blessed in my life. Anything I liked, I’ve painted, and I’ve been able to do what I wanted to do.”

The rolling process is an allday job that begins at 4 a.m., and it includes exact steps, said volunteer Betty Mahan.

“There is a specific way you have to roll them, and you never turn the dough,” she remarked. “You release the dough up from the table before you cut them. It’s a specific process.”

Knapp, who has been volunteering with the fastnacht bake for about 15 years, is in

Volunteers are invited to help with the fastnacht bake and they’ll be offered handson training, Mahan said, noting that no one is striving for perfection.

“Our fastnachts are like snowflakes. No one is like the other,” she stated. “They are all handmade. No machines are used.”

And on the rare occasion a fastnacht turns out that can’t be sold, it won’t go to waste.

Explained Lutz, “There’s nothing better than getting to eat a reject.”

Martic Pantry, Kitchen Cupboard, and Bare Essentials are organizations that help those in need in different ways. Martic Pantry operates out of the same building as Martic Store, 561 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood, and provides financial, medical, home, and vehicle maintenance services to residents of Martic Township who are experiencing hardship. One of the primary services Martic Pantry offers is providing food cards that can be used at the Martic Store.

The recipients of these food cards can purchase the items they need as opposed to getting a prefilled box. Kitchen Cupboard and Bare Essentials are ministries within Mount Nebo United Methodist Church, 673 Martic Heights Drive, Pequea. Both ministries serve residents of the southern part of Penn Manor School District as well as those who live in Solanco School District.

Bare Essentials provides socks and underwear to people of all

ages while Kitchen Cupboard supplies nonfood items such as soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and gas cards.

LCP currently has a clothing bank located in the basement of Martic Store that operates on the same schedule as Kitchen Cupboard and Bare Essentials, which is the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and the second Friday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“We’re trying to not duplicate something someone else has going on,” stated David Gochnauer, vice president of the Martic Pantry’s board of directors. “Let’s work together rather than all of us trying to do everything.”

“We’ve never wanted to be the end, all be all,” explained LCP community liaison Deb Meckley. “Our job is to sort of get everybody connected so that we could do referrals in multiple directions and get people connected to the

resources they need.”

“I am thrilled to have a clothing bank nearby,” said Sharon Aukamp, director of Kitchen Cupboard. “I just can’t imagine how daunting it can be if you are desperately in need of something, and for them to overcome their pride to step out of their comfort zone. I just think it’s thrilling to have a network that we could say, ‘We can help you with that.’”

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recently announced that Keith Eldredge, a partner at RKL in Mechanicsburg, has been named chair of the board for 2022.

Eldredge grew up with several construction workers in his family, spent time on job sites and worked on several construction projects. A certified public accountant (CPA), he has provided audit and tax services for construction companies for more than 36 years. He is an active member of ABC Keystone, most recently serving as first vice chair of the board and chair of the Budget and Finance Committee. He has also served on both the legislative and membership committees and on the Keystone Chapter’s education committee and was the chair in 2014.

Eldredge has been a member of the Construction Financial Management Asso-

ciation since 1994 and earned his Certified Construction Industry Financial Person designation in 2014. This credential recognizes levels of expertise in the profession and professional standards in construction financial management. To become certified, applicants must complete testing in the disciplines of finance, IT, human resources and law.

Actively involved in many associations, Eldredge has previously been president of ACCESS-York and Leadership York, as well as treasurer of York Habitat for Humanity and the Dover Area Soccer Association. He holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from York College of Pennsylvania and earned his CPA license in 1989. Eldredge and his wife, Kimberly, live in Dover in York County.

Freedom Life Church will launch a new campus location under the leadership of pastor Derek and Lily Weidman on Sunday, Feb. 27, at Smith Middle School, 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. While the gardens are started, there is still work to be done. Plans include expanding the brick paths down to bus stops on the main road to provide the women with easy access to transportation. A greenhouse will be added onsite, offering hands-on gardening opportunities for the residents, and Stoudt said plans are in the works to create walking trails throughout the woods on the property.

He noted he’s already received calls from local churches and organizations that want to volunteer in the gardens, and he’s excited about that. “ We want to invite the community in to see what we’re all about here,” he said. “We want the women here to get involved in volunteer work in the community as well. We’re doing everything we can to reduce the stigma associated with people in recovery.” And he’s looking for additional donors for everything from purchasing an engraved brick to planting a tree or sponsoring a bench.

When The GateHouse opened Riverview Tower in 2019, it transformed a late 19th-century house into a home for up to 30 women, who can live in the house for up to 90 days before moving to transitional housing. With headquarters in downtown Lancaster, The GateHouse operates a behavioral health outpatient center and other extended-care residences as well as transitional living homes in Lancaster County.

Stoudt said the organization may use the Serenity Gardens as a model for similar projects at its other locations.

“We are hoping the women will use the gardens as a place to relax and reflect,” Stoudt said. “It’s another tool on their recovery journey.”

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s last collaboration, “The Sound of Music” follows a young postulant named Maria, who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain Von Trapp and brings music and joy to the household. As the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the von Trapp family face a moral decision. Featuring well-known songs such as “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, “The Sound of Music” earned five Tony Awards and five Oscars. The original story is based on “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp. This production holds special significance for the Fulton as many cast members, designers,
