he creator of the over-the-top gowns on TLC’s “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” will be the guest speaker at the next monthly meeting of the Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN). Couture designer Sondra Celli will join the group via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22. Members of the public are invited to attend and may email lancastersews@gmail.com for details. Celli started out in children’s wear after graduating from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and working in fashion houses around the globe. The clothing was heavily embellished with ribbons, beads, and miniature toys such as racecars, checkers, and tiny dolls and was sold at Saks, Neiman Marcus, and other department stores across the country. “It was a colorful, textural, whimsical, and three-dimensional line,” Celli said. “My collection stood out,

and that’s how the Gypsies found me. They tracked me down, and I’ve been designing for them ever since, and that was over 40 years ago.” Celli opened the Sondra Celli Company in Waltham, Mass., in 1981 and specialized in what she calls “uncommon crystal couture.” She does all the patternwork herself and cuts all the pieces for every design. Staff members sew the garments together before other workers, called “blingettes,” add the surface embellishments. “The stones are put on one-by-one by hand,” Celli explained. “It’s a labor-intensive job, but the results are outstanding, eyecatching designs. As I like to say, ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.’” Celli published a book with Atglen-based Schiffer Publishing in 2019. “BLING! The Uncommon Crystal Couture World of Sondra Celli” includes insight into her career as well as directions for several embellishment projects. See Bling! pg 5

BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Todd Mealy, who is white, was 12 years old and grooving to the music at a football game with his black friends when an older white man approached him and spoke derogatorily of Mealy’s involvement with them. The encounter upset Mealy, robbing the event of its joy. Other incidents would upset the joy of racial diversity in Mealy’s life. At age 6, Mealy moved with his family to Harrisburg from Bradford County, and as he matured, Mealy observed that his lived experiences were

I interviewed for a part-time job as a proofreader a few hours before my wedding rehearsal on Dec. 28, 2006. When I received the offer to join Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. as a full-time feature writer and photographer, I was buying last-minute decorating supplies in a discount store. I was so excited to have my first salaried professional job that I forgot to introduce the members of the bridal party to each other. One of my sisters later asked me who the person was who escorted her down the aisle. See Farewell pg 3

Additionally, his adopted sister, who is Korean, went through a racial identity crisis when she was about 18 years old. “It was a colorblind household,” Mealy said. “The idea was colorblindness should be enough. We know in hindsight that colorblindness (doesn’t go) far enough.” As a result, during his career as a social studies teacher - most recently at Penn Manor High School - Mealy has positioned himself as an education critic and an equity advocate in schools even though some people have raised an eyebrow at his work.

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.

Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:

The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.

Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.

Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.

More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.

Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.

And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.

Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. That excitement continued on my first day, Jan. 8, 2007, as my predecessor, Ethan Riley, showed me the ropes … and then turned to anxiety when I was solely in charge of finding articles in a news cycle that never stopped. Eventually, however, I settled into the role of “Newspaper Lady,” one that I have been privileged to hold for 14 years. My clients have made all the difference. You invited me into your homes and into your hearts. I have so many fond memories: -Robah Hess teaching me to be careful with my instructions during photoshoots by popping out his dentures when I asked him to show me his teeth when he smiled. -Competing in the invitational milking contest at the Solanco Fair. -Being teased by Bethesda United Methodist Church members the first time I experimented with purple hair. -Standing in a pasture at Noble Hill Horse Rescue as horses grazed around us and then one tried to eat my notepad. -Judging a cooking class contest at Penn Manor High School. And there are the not-sofond memories: -The death of Lancaster County Master Gardener Tom Beck in 2015. This hit me hard because we had worked on numerous stories together. I treasure the giant allium that blooms outside my front door every spring; it was the party favor from the Master Gardener dinner where Tom and his wife, Betty, hosted me a few months before his passing. -The time I combined the names of two educators and misnamed Martin Meylin Middle School principal Jamie Raum in print. -The day I interviewed a group of individuals who had planted a new church and then went to my next appointment and realized I was at the church they had left. I have always been grateful that I have not had to cover hard news. I have witnessed your joys and celebrations, your Eagle Scout achievements and fair queen coronations. There have been stories rooted in

time had come for me to try something different, to grow in a new direction. My last day as the Newspaper Lady was Feb. 5. I have moved on, but I have not moved away. Once it is safe to linger in person again, I will be eager to hear your updates, but not for publication. For that, send your news items to news@engleonline.com or call 717-892-6018 to talk to a member of our editorial staff. Farewell, and God bless.

Columbia Food Bank Supports Community BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The past year has been a trying one for the Columbia Food Bank, but the organization has never wavered in its support of the community, said Danielle Peters, director. “This is a year when everybody is in need,” she remarked. “We’re seeing people who have never been to a food bank in their life. We want people to know, if you come to our door, no matter where you’re from, you’re going to walk out with groceries.” The Columbia Food Bank operates out of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St. It is open 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. “Clients can come to us once a month,” Peters said,

noting that an ID is all that is needed to receive food. “We prepack the groceries for them, and we give people everything they would receive at the grocery store breakfast foods, lunch foods, dinner foods, snacks. We’re fortunate to be able to supply meat, cheese, butter and eggs as well.” The food bank serves mostly the Columbia, Mountville, West Hempfield, Manor Township and Washington Boro areas, although Peters said clients have come from all over central Pennsylvania. She noted that in 2019, the food bank gave away approximately 66,000 pounds of food, while in 2020, that number grew to 70,000 pounds. The organization is a nonprofit and receives its

support through food and monetary donations from the community. This past year, food donations were down due to closings of offices and other businesses that might normally hold food drives, Peters noted. “ We’re community supported, and because people are so generous, our money donations went up this past year,” she said. “The issue became trying to find places to buy food, because many of the stores and agencies we purchase from were going through their own shortages. Even with all that going on, though, God is good. Nobody ever went away without food.” The organization uses monetary donations to purchase food, including perishable items since those are

typically not donated and because the food bank has little storage space to keep things long-term. “We are constantly replenishing our supply,” she explained, adding that in 2019, the organization purchased 20,357 pounds of food. “In 2020, we had to buy 27,234 pounds of food.” She said the generosity of the community has allowed the food bank to continue to serve the public, even when the organization has endured additional challenges. The church that houses the food bank has faced some building issues, and it’s likely the organization will need to find a new home in the future, Peters noted. Giant Launches Choice Pass As part of its long-term strategic omnichannel plans, the Giant Company recently announced that it is now offering Choice Pass to its online Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct customers. Choice Pass represents the company’s most recent step in enhancing its holistic online experience while keeping its focus on helping families save time so they can find more time to gather around the table. Choice Pass provides unlimited free delivery and pickup for an annual dollar amount, which represents a new savings for subscribers. In July 2019, the company opened its 100th pickup location, in Carlisle. Along the way, the company also launched a new website to deliver a unified online experience bringing everything together for customers - all offerings, products and Giant Choice Rewards - with a bolder interface and enhanced personalization. workers, donating hundreds of masks to area hospitals, veterans, and senior citizens.” LASN president Rachel Siegel noted that the silver lining of meeting virtually is that the group can more easily host guest speakers from outside the area. “Even if we don’t expect to ever create or wear something as elaborate as Sondra’s creations, I am sure that we will all learn something that we can put into use in our own sewing, whether it is a handy tool, the name of a supplier, or a technique that cleverly solves an issue,” Siegel said. The common thread running through LASN’s programs this year is that of challenge. The first program, on Jan. 25, featured sewing with velvet, a persnickety fabric that can pose difficulties for even experienced sewists. Celli has been asked to speak about challenges she encounters in her work, which include managing dozens of yards of fabric in a single gown and creating the attendant accessories, such as custom angel wings and blinged-out shoes. “For (the television show) we need to move equipment and people from the work room into the main show room and

spread out on multiple folding tables,” Celli said. “The gypsy gowns usually need two to three large crinoline petticoats and are highly embellished. I have often had to put anywhere from three to six blingettes on one dress in order to get it done.” 2020 was also a challenge for the Sondra Celli Company. Celli noted that her biggest problem was getting supplies from her New York vendors because the state had shut down. She embraced the opportunity to reorganize and restock. “Business was down but, thank goodness, consistent,” Celli commented. “We spent a lot of time using up inventory to create masks for front line

When the most recent shutdown was announced at the end of 2020, restaurant coowner Mariella Volker turned to Facebook. Inspired by stories from college friends who now live in western Pennsylvania and Ohio, Volker created the “Lancaster County Take Out” Facebook group. “I just started it on a whim to see if this could be a way to help local businesses with takeout,” she explained. Volker was very clear from the group’s beginning that she did not want it to become a place where members denigrated anyone for staying open. Rather, the focus was on highlighting those who were in compliance with the orders. “I was looking for a way to give a leg up and provide community

support for restaurants that were staying closed and providing takeout,” she said. Word of the group spread, and membership climbed. Two weeks into the new year, membership had surpassed 8,500 people, and posting was rapid. The group has become a crowdsourcer’s dream, with pictures of takeout orders galore, along with requests for recommendations based on food preferences or geography. “I didn’t think it would become what it has,” Volker said. “I’m thrilled so many places have found support.” In an informal poll, nearly 300 people said they have tried new restaurants as a result of the group, and about as many said they have a greater appreciation for their community. Almost 200 people said they have purchased more takeout

than usual. “This group led me to trying Gracie’s (on West Main in Leola) for the first time. In the last month we have gotten takeout at least five times, ordered two DIY breakfasts, and got our Christmas dinner there. It is our new favorite,” said Toni Hershey. “I have also really enjoyed sharing places we love with the group and making sure longtime favorites - like Sushi One - keep getting business.” “Thanks to this site, I’ve discovered a lot of new favorite restaurants that I have been driving by for years - Gracie’s and Three Sisters Park (in Ephrata) to name two,” Deb Gifford commented. “I just love how this has been such a positive group to work together and help local businesses and their employees,”

Christine Cipoletti said. “I have tried new restaurants and some that I hadn’t known about. This is such a useful Facebook page.” Business owners have commented to Volker that the group has made a positive impact on their businesses, especially for caterers who have been able to transition from preparing food for events to food for families. Although the orders now state that restaurants may partially open for indoor dining, Volker believes that takeout will be a major part of their business plans. “The landscape of the restaurant industry has changed, permanently,” she suggested. “Takeout’s not going anywhere. People are used to eating in the comfort of their homes now.” “Lancaster County Take Out” is a public group, and new Mariella Volker enjoyed takeout food from Gran members are always welcome. To help other teachers address issues related to race and diversity, Mealy published “Race Conscious Pedagogy: Disrupting Racism at Majority White Schools” in November 2020. He also founded the Equity Institute for Race Conscious Pedagogy, which launched in early 2020. Additionally, Mealy resigned from coaching high school football after the 2019 season so he could focus on race consciousness work. Mealy noted that academic classes that explore issues of race may increase attendance, improve grades, and keep students engaged. By teaching

empathy and critical thinking, which students could immediately apply to their relationships with their peers, he shared that such classes can a positive impact on schools and communities. The vision for the Equity Institute is to aid clients in creating race-conscious environments, which can include schools, corporations, and churches. The institute offers professional development workshops tailored to the needs of its clients and provides curriculum writing and consulting at all levels from kindergarten through college. Current clients are located in
