Manor School District willl bring its annual Readathon program to each of its elementary schools beginning on Thursday, Feb. 9. The Readathon events will be held twice at each participating school from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and will conclude with the last session on Friday, March 24. The events are free to participate in, but parents must register their children beforehand.
Readathon began almost two decades ago as an initiative from the Penn Manor Education Association, and it was made possible by a grant from the Penn Manor Education Foundation. Parents brought their kids to the high school to participate in reading-related activities and
high school students read aloud to the children, after which parents picked their children up again. The event served as part of a nationwide campaign to encourage students to read.
Civitas, a community service club, at Penn Manor High School decided to bring the Readathon to the elementary schools so that kids could simply stay after school to
participate, and parents would only need to pick them up once. Civitas hosts the event at each school twice, allowing students to complete a reading calendar between each visit. Students who complete their reading calendar receive a prize upon the second visit. Aside from encouraging younger kids to read, Readathon also serves as an opportunity for high school students to gain experience working with children and organizing activities. The event is almost entirely run by student volunteers from Civitas as well as students from the National Honor Society. The high school students choose which book they will read to the younger students. They then set up and operate the activities, such as
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDDaniel Foreacre of Lancaster graduated from Millersville University in December with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Daniel, a husband and a father of two, now has his eyes set on earning his doctorate. But in order to pave the road for his current success, Daniel had to overcome a mountain of challenges and
came close to losing everything in his life that was most important to him.
Daniel has always known that he wanted to pursue computer science, ever since his dad first brought home a small computer in the early ’90s. The computer could be plugged into the television and only ran simple programs, but a young Daniel was fascinated by the possibilities.
After studying computer science in school for a few years, Daniel had to drop out due to persistent health issues. He began working in the food industry and became a manager at a restaurant, where he met his wife, Jenn. In 2012, Daniel’s ongoing health problems, later identified as fibromyalgia, made him unable to keep working and he became a stayat-home father for his two kids. Jenn financially supported the family until she was laid off, and she too began struggling with serious health issues. The Foreacres were unable to keep up with their mortgage and bills and lost their house. They stayed with friends for some time and did their best to make ends meet and keep their children in school, but they

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDMost people are familiar with the concept of recycling in the year 2023. If you’re not, you have likely seen the phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and the many billboards that discourage wastefulness. The majority of municipalities in Lancaster County collect the carefully sorted bottles and boxes that sit on the curb when trash day arrives. But where do these See
“(High school students) have to think of classroom management and being enthusiastic, but also being a good mentor and a role model for the kids.”
Privately contracted haulers pick up the trash and recyclables from the street. These trucks bring their loads to the local waste management facility, where the waste is combined into larger heaps to make transportation easier and minimize the number of trucks needed. However, not all townships offer collection for recyclables, meaning that things like cans and bottles are thrown into the trash unless they make their way to a waste management facility by other means.
Solanco resident Wendy West lives in an area where recycling is not required, and her recyclables do not get picked up every week. Instead, she collects items like boxes and glass jars in her garage, loads them into her car once a week and delivers them to a
drop-off location in Oxford. “I’m choosing to do this extra step because I want things that can be recycled to be recycled, but I’m concerned that they’re going in the trash,” said West.
Once the collected waste is compiled into larger groups, it is transported by a waste management organization to a processing center. At the processing center, the waste is fed through several machines that sort the items. After the items are sorted, they are compressed together and finally shipped to a buyer who will use the raw materials to make new items such as plastic bottles. “We all want to do the right thing and recycle,” said Steve Burn of the Southeastern Chester County Refuse Authority (SECCRA). “I can guarantee that all of the recycling that comes through our facility is handled
and processed to be recycled.”
SECCRA is a nonprofit organization that operates with the long-term management of waste in mind. “We’re in it for the long haul,” said Burn. “The less trash that we’re putting in landfills, the better it is for the community.”
SECCRA services 10 drop-off locations, including the one that West drives her recyclables to every week.
Burn noted that not all plastic items are recyclable. The machines that process recyclables are designed for simple items such as cans, bottles, cardboard and paper. Items such as plastic toys and containers that are not suitable for the machine cannot be sorted and are
thrown in the trash.
Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) limits the recyclables that it accepts to what it calls The Big Four. The Big Four refers to corrugated cardboard, plastic bottles and jugs, metal food and beverage cans and glass jars and bottles.
The Friends of Lancaster Public Library will hold their annual Winter ReSort Book Sale from Friday, Feb. 17, to Sunday, Feb. 19. The book sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18. A half-price sale will take
place on Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at The Book ReSort, 225 N. Marshall St., Lancaster. On-site free parking is available, and cash, checks, and all major credit cards will be
Penn Manor’s boys’ swim team posted its second win of the season with an 83-51 result over visiting McCaskey last Tuesday, January 31. The girls, with an 89-75 result, provided the sweep in the teams’ last regular meet of the season.
“We had some great swims with a lot of dropped times,” noted head coach Eric Urban. “The boys had some big individual wins and the girls meet came down to relays and individual wins.”
Brayden Clow emerged as Manor’s leading scorer, winning not only the 100 free and 100 back but contributing to a pair of relay firsts. Clow swam with Noah Reen, Spencer Barry and Pol Linares in the 200 IM and with Reen, Gage Myers and Derek Thomas in the 400 free relay while Reen and Thomas provided a 100 back sweep taking second and third respectively.
The team of Barry, Linares, G. Myers and Thomas also claimed the top time in the 200 free relay.
Barry went on to win the 50 free, Thomas earned the 500 free, Linares was tops in the 100 breaststroke and Reen touched first in the 200 IM.
For the girls, both teams won four individual races but the girls went 1, 2, 3 in the 50 free with Grace Bresch, Emma Landis and Brianna Esh, and won all three relays to pull away.
Bresch added a second win in the 100 fly with Kenzie Wolpert touching first in both the 100 free and 200 IM. The pair teamed with Ellie Baldrige and Kari Anderson for a 200 medley relay win. Bresch anchored the winning 200 free team with Baldrige, Emma Landis and Catherine Rabatin while Wolpert anchored the 400 free with Landis, Esh and Bella Fulmer leading the way.
BOWLING
With playoffs closing in, the Comet bowlers took one more step toward extending their season. Friday, January 27, fighting from behind, Penn Manor nudged Manheim Township 4-3.
The Streaks took the opening game 985-901 but the Comets dismissed Nick Tomlinson’s matchhigh 269 second game and pulled out a 13-pin victory to knot the score at 2-2.
Four of Manor’s five bowlers rolled 200 or better with Josh Stock’s 228 leading the way. The Streaks rolled three 200+ games but it
wasn’t enough. The Comets clinched the win with a 1057, winning by 25 pins.
Township earned the final team point with the highest pin total of the match but it didn’t change the outcome.
Stock’s 635 was the third highest score of the day and Manors’ high total. Chris Hull added a 614 and Eva Brubaker, the only Comet to roll three 200+ games, settled for 608. Lacey Slaymaker (540) and Corinne Smith (535) rounded out the scoring.
Last Monday, Jan. 30, the Comets found themselves in another tight one. This time they fell short, 5-2, against Ephrata. The Mounts won the first two games by a combined 56 pins to clinch the victory.
Brubaker’s 645 series was a match high. Slaymaker rolled three 200+ games for a 619 and Stock was two pins behind. Smith settled for a 561 and Hull and Kayla Wasche combined for a 519.
“Ephrata has some very good spare shooters and we missed too many spares in this one,” said head coach Chris Vital. “But we’re still in control of making the league playoffs, as a team, as long as McCaskey doesn’t shut us out.”
Looking to sweep the series and notch their second league win of the season, the lady Comets hosted Hempfield Friday, Jan. 27 but fell short of their goal. The visiting Knights used a 17-5 run through the first quarter to gain momentum and went on to outscore the Comets in each of the next three quarters for a 55-26 road win.
Izzy Kligge’s six points were high for the Comets. Sheridan Charles came off the bench with five fourth quarter points, including 3-for-3 from the foul line. Lilly Rineer also
finished with five points.
In a non-section matchup against Cocalico last Monday, Jan. 30, the Comets put together a furious fourth quarter rally, pouring in their second highest scoring total of the season, 19, only to fall short by a single point, 40-39. The Comets did not have an answer for Teagan Sahm who racked up 23 points, including 9 of her team’s first 11 points.
“We definitely struggled the whole game to stop their post player,” said head coach Mike Glackin.
Down 30-20 after three quarters, five different Comets contributed to the rally with Rineer netting six of her eight and Kligge and Smith adding four. Kligge and Carly Groff also drained triples in that run.
“Izzy hit her three right before the buzzer and I was out of time outs so the clock ran off,” recalled Glackin. “Our defense forced a lot of turnovers and in the fourth we converted some of those.”
Kligge settled for a team-high 13 with Smith adding a season-high 10. “Izzy continues to be our most consistent player and Paityn played her tail off and brought great energy.
“Credit the girls for not giving up. They gave a great effort.”
For the second time this season, the Comets played section-leader Hempfield tough but to no avail. The Knights survived a fourth quarter Penn Manor rally and settled for a 52-45 win on Friday, January 27.
Claiming a 19-14 first half advantage, the Knights gained some distance with a convincing 19-9 third quarter and then held on as the Comets out-pointed the hosts 22-14 down the stretch. Ethan Benne led the charge, pouring in 11 of his team-high 15 points over that run. Wesley Dhamir and Aidan Mattern both settled for nine points.
WRESTLING
The matmen competed in the Lancaster-Lebanon League championships Friday and Saturday, January 27-28 and came home with five medals.
Travis Clawson, wrestling at 121pounds, was the highest Comet finisher, grabbing silver with Saturday’s tight 5-4 loss to Marco Tocci, son of Comet athletic director Pat Tocci. Tied at 4-4 heading into the third period, Tocci escaped to start the action and then denied Clawson the rest of the way.
The Comet junior opened with a bye and then decked Columbia’s Drew Paules in 14 seconds. He earned a second fall, this one in 2:48, over Lampeter’s Riley Bonholtzer in the quarterfinals and then got to the finals with a forfeit win over Township’s Kamdyn Williams.
Riley Evans followed Clawson to the medal stand with a fifth place finish at 107. He went 3-2 on the weekend, earning a fall over E-town’s Trenton Smith (1:00) and a
tech fall over Annville-Cleona’s Oliver Funck along the way.
The Comets also earned three sixth place finishes with Teagan Rogers (189), Josh Zook (152) and Gavin Boland (114) contributing to a 14th place finish.
Zook opened with a 3:16 fall against Donegal’s Ruben Mumper but rallied with four wins to face Mumper in the consi semis. This time the Comet freshman went the distance before falling short 9-4.
Zook faced Township’s Katen Kamp for fifth place but fell short, 12-2.
Rogers, who enlisted in the Armed Forces last year, withdrew
from the tournament in order to fulfill a military obligation. He opened with a tech fall and a major decision on Friday but forfeited three bouts on Saturday. The forfeits moved him to sixth place. Boland, on the other hand, withdrew due to a knee injury suffered in the semifinals. He opened with back-to-back falls to get to the semis. He was the No. 2 seed.
“Gavin is having a great season,” said head coach Brandon Vernalli. “We hope this isn’t a season-ender.” Also contributing to Manor’s point total was Evan Buswell (139) and Gabe Midile (127).

couldn’t find a stable living situation. In 2017, only a few days before Thanksgiving, Daniel and Jenn lost custody of their children in what Daniel describes as the lowest point of his life. With all of their other options exhausted and nowhere else to go, Daniel and Jenn came to the Water Street Mission in April of 2018, where they stayed in its shortterm residential program.
“At the time, I was still blaming everyone else but me, and I wasn’t ready to deal with anything,” said Daniel. “I started to change my views and see that I had a lot to work on.”

Jenn left the program after a month, and Daniel began to confront his challenges from a different perspective. He sought out additional help from the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, where a counselor advised Daniel that given his interests and ability, he should go back to school. “I real-
Daniel left Water Street Mission and moved into a house with Jenn and a roommate, and he applied to HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College to study computer science again. He worked as a tutor to cover his bills and began the process of regaining custody of his children. After graduating from HACC with an associate degree, Daniel continued his education at Millersville, where he realized that he wanted to pursue a doctorate in computational neuroscience - the study of using programs to model the brain and its functions.
“It felt so good to just have something worth living for again. I almost lost it all, but I didn’t give up,” Daniel said.

Making fastnachts at Holy Trinity Catholic Church is an exact science. Sort of. There are specific steps required in making the treats, but because each one is handmade, no two are alike, said Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at the church.
“There is a correct way to roll the dough,” Mahan explained. “It’s not like rolling dough at home. You don’t flour the dough. You only flour the board and the pin. You don’t turn the dough over. You relax the dough by lifting if off the board.” The dough rises twice - once overnight before it’s rolled out and once after rolling - before the treats are fried. She noted that the resulting fastnacht is unique, adding, “I’ve never had any that taste like ours.”
Holy Trinity’s annual fastnacht sale will begin on Monday, Feb. 20. Sales will continue Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Wednesday, Feb. 22, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays
designing a craft for kids to make that relates to the book they will be reading.
Volunteers have to work within a budget, manage time and scheduling constraints, acquire
through March 15.
The fastnacht sale started as a project to raise funds to build a new church. While the current bake will produce more than 5,000 dozen fastnachts, the sale began as a small endeavor, noted volunteer Kathleen Lutz.
“It started out with only one or two days of sales,” said Lutz, who has been volunteering with the bake since the 1970s. While the original recipe is the same, she noted that some things have been tweaked. “We’ve found easier ways to do things over the years,” she said. “Everybody has good ideas. Some work and some don’t.”
The sale is still a fundraiser for the church, with proceeds used for parish projects and to support Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School. Members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Columbia also assist with the sale, said St. Peter member George Overmeyer. “This is a ‘fun’ raiser more than a fundraiser,” he added. “We all have a lot of fun.”

and prepare supplies and strategically plan their activities and snack breaks. If one activity is more hands-on and keeps the kids active, the volunteers make sure that the next activity will allow
the bakes, with shifts available starting at 4 a.m. for people who want to help roll the dough. Experience is not required, said volunteer Karen Sahd.
“There’s always somebody around who knows the correct way to do things,” she commented.
Mahan noted that working at 4 a.m. is not required. “People can give an hour of time or help when they can,” she said. “We need second shift people and cleanup people, too.”
Fastnachts are available by the dozen, either glazed or plain. The committee members estimate that 75% of orders are for glazed treats.
the kids to sit down and rest.
“I think the organizational aspect is beneficial for them,” said Jen Kroesen, a math teacher at Penn Manor High School and adviser for Civitas. “They have to think of classroom management and being enthusiastic, but also
“You don’t even need to look in the bag to know if they are glazed or not,” volunteer Jim Knapp said. “It’s evident by the weight of the bag because we use so much glaze.”
Orders will be taken for fastnachts online only until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holytrinitycolumbiapa.com. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, first-served basis.
