s a kid, Becky McDonah was always drawing and making art. Every summer, she and her family spent three months in a cabin with no television or phone, and she said she thinks that her creativity originated there. Today, McDonah is an associate professor in fine art metals at Millersville University, a position she took in July 2012. Most of the time, people ask McDonah when she knew she wanted to be an artist, but she actually grew up wanting to be a teacher. When she was an undergrad student at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, she was studying mass communications with a minor in art, but ultimately decided to double major in the two. McDonah went on to

graduate school at Arizona State University, where she received her Master of Fine Arts in studio art, specializing in metalworking, and she has spent the past 10 years teaching fine art metals at Millersville University. “It’s my passion to be out there making and teaching others how to do it, too,” she said. Working as a professor has not hindered McDonah from exhibiting her work, which is very important to her. She has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and has lectured and presented at workshops across the country. McDonah’s work has been published in CAST, Metalsmith magazine, Humor in Craft, Mixed Metal Jewelry Workshop, and 500 Metal Vessels. Recently, her work “Particulate Protection: A Reliquary for the

“Particulate Protection: A Reliquary for the N95 Mask”
N95 Mask” was featured in the 54th annual Art of the State exhibition at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, “Particulate Protection” is made of brass, silver, copper, pearls, an N95 mask, cheesecloth, and faux suede. McDonah has a deep interest in historical reliquaries, containers that house relics, so she is always looking at imagery and objects from different time periods. Prior to creating the piece, she had read “Heavenly Bodies: Cult Treasures and Spectacular Saints From the Catacombs,” which discusses the catacomb saints and how their skeletal remains were decorated, ornamented, and preserved for religious purposes. McDonah decided to treat an N95 mask in the same manner as a catacomb saint by putting it in a reliquary. With this piece, McDonah explained she wants to grab people’s attention and prompt them to contemplate the function of the mask, reflect on their choices,

and consider the importance of the mask. “Really, it’s just about thinking about things, being thankful for things, and protecting them,” explained McDonah. McDonah was one of two artists who received a Purchase Prize in the Art of the State exhibition. This means that “Particulate Protection” will become a part of the museum’s permanent collection. “Art can be a reflection of what’s going on around us,” said McDonah. “It’s like a way to think about it and to express what your feelings are during that time. Not that it’s always therapeutic, but it really is if you are creating art. Even though Lancaster resident Krista Hurley has been running since 2011 and running half marathons since 2012, prior to last year, the farthest she had ever traveled to run was South Dakota in 2020. On that trip, she ran the Crazy Horse Half Marathon - one of 18 half marathons and two full marathons she has now completed. A series of events in 2021 led to Hurley setting a new travel record for her running. While training for a fall half marathon, Hurley posted a photo online that led to her first European half. “I had to do a long run on a Friday morning near work,” she recalled, noting that completing eight 1-mile loops in cold, rainy weather in the darkness was a source of pride. Determined Fitness, a program for breast cancer patients and survivors, will hold an open house on Sunday, Feb. 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will take place at Crush PD Fitness, 35 S. Willowdale Drive, Suite 122, Lancaster. The event will be hosted by Cris Forney, a certified cancer exercise specialist who also holds a master’s degree in counselor education. She has combined her skill sets to help breast cancer patients by providing a dedicated space where they can develop fitness of both their bodies and minds. Forney explained that Determined Fitness offers mindfulness practice and lymphedema prevention along with exercises that promote range of motion, flexibility, functional movement and cardiovascular and strength training. Hurley noted that the homestretch of the run - with the Leaning Tower straight ahead and then the course turning left toward the Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery, where the finish line awaited - was especially memorable. Hurley kept herself busy while waiting for the Willet sisters to complete the full marathon. During the afternoon, she climbed the Leaning Tower. “I rounded a corner, and it was (suddenly) leaning,” she recalled. “You are walking up, but it’s leaning down.” Hurley enjoyed the view of the mountain range from the top. The trio spent a few nights in Pisa before visiting Florence. They also traveled to a number of towns, including Lucerne, Switzerland, and the town of Colmar, France. “All these lit-

furt, Germany, on Dec. 15. After a few days in Germany, which included visiting Christmas markets, including one in Luxembourg, the trio drove through Switzerland to Pisa. The run was held on the morning of Dec. 19. Hurley reported that the weather was sunny with temperatures in the 30s. The flat course both started and ended near the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. “I knew going in I wouldn’t have my best time because of jet lag, so I just wanted to enjoy the scenery,” said Hurley, who took more photos than she usually does while running. “It was a beautiful course, and when do I get the chance to do this?” she mused, recalling crossing the River Arno and seeing Christmas trees dotting the town.

Hurley knew she could not be prepared in time for Athens, but she learned the sisters also planned to run the Pisa Marathon in Italy in December, and that run offered a half marathon option. “I figured if I did the half, I would still have time and energy to see things and explore the town (of Pisa),” recalled Hurley, who began a modified training regimen to keep herself in shape after finishing a local half in November. She flew from Harrisburg on Dec. 14, arriving in Frank-

BOWLING The battle for the top spot in the Section One standings took place last Monday at Leisure Lanes where Hempfield and Penn Manor, tied for the lead, competed for the second time. And for the second time this season, the Knights rose to the occasion, winning 5-2. With a 269 from Charlie Hull, the Comets got off to a strong start, taking the first set 12231090. That was all the motivation Hempfield needed as they charged back to win the next two sets and the final pin total (3372-3300) for sole possession of the top spot. The Knights move to 49-14. Manor falls in at 46-19. “I was disappointed we lost but we bowled tough,” said head coach Chris Vital. “That 3300 is our highest match of the year.” Josh Stock paced the Comets with a 716 series that included nine straight strikes in the final set where he finished with a team-high 278. “Josh had a big day,” said Vitale. “Overall, we just couldn’t get going in the third set. McCaskey took the first game by five pins but couldn’t quite keep the pace after that, falling 5-2. Warfel, with three games over 200, including a 277, was the top bowler of the day, settling for a 718 series. Brubaker also rolled three 200 plus games and finished with a 638. Hull, with a 235 in game one, added a 619. Stock (222), Carroll (232) and Corrinne Smith (201) all contributed with 200 plus games. WRESTLING In a field of ten teams, the Comets participated in the Exeter Blue/White Duals Saturday, January 22. They went 0-5 on the day while Conestoga Valley rose to the top with a 5-0 mark. Manor opened with losses to Downingtown West and Hill School before later dropping a heartbreaker, 35-32 against CD East. They capped the day with losses to Daniel Boone and Archbishop Ryan. “If you take away our forfeits, we won 8 of the 13 matches head-to-head,” said head coach Brandon Vernalli. The Comets fell behind 296 against CD East but rallied down the stretch, winning five of the last six to close the gap. Travis Clawson went 5-0 and Teagen Rogers and Ty Grassel finished with four wins each. “ We had some younger guys like Mason Garfinkel and Mikey Hoskins earn two wins each,” added Vernalli. “This team shows heart. They’re hardworking and never quit on one another.” Riley Evans earned three falls, including one in 33 seconds. Evans (106) with a decision, Clawson (113) with a major and Gabriel Midile (120) with a 2:47 fall accounted for 13 of Manor’s 16 points in a 47-16 loss to Cocalico last Wednesday. Rogers capped the scoring with a decision at 172. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Comets got a career-high 36 points from Lily Sugra and Penn Manor ran away from Section Two leader Lebanon, 62-41 Friday, Jan. 21. Manor’s second quarter tallies and the Comets pulled ahead 30-21 at the break. Morgan Miller chipped in with 11 points as the Comets outscored the Cedars (10-5 overall) 18-10 in the third to extend the advantage. The win is Manor’s fourth straight. That streak stalled on Saturday, Jan. 22 when the Comets let a 10-point advantage slip away. The result was a 55-51 loss to West York, the fifth ranked team in District Three 5A. Sugra bagged nine points and the Comets nailed three triples in a 20-10 first quarter lead. The hosts returned the favor in the third quarter, using a 17-6 run to take a 36-35 lead into the fourth. Free throws played a pivotal roll down the stretch. West York canned 9-of-14 freebies (they were 16-of-26 for the game) and outscored the
Comets 19-16 to pull away. Sugra posted a game-high 20 points, and Miller added 14. Their biggest game in the stretch was a convincing 44-28 win at Hempfield last Wednesday that moved the Comets into a tie for first place. Manor took care of the ball, handled Hempfield’s pressure and hit three straight triples in the third to pull away. Sugra hit a game-high 14 points and Izzy Kligge went 4for-4 from the line in the final minute to seal Hempfield’s fate. SWIMMING In the pool last Tuesday, the Comets went up against a deeper Manheim Township squad and suffered a pair off losses. The undefeated Blue Streaks topped Manor (1-7) 135-25 while the girls (1-7) suffered a 141-36 result. Avery Groff’s first place finish in the 500 free was Manor’s only win.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women. However, through research, treatments, surgeries, and determination, there are currently more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S. Located at 143 Oakridge Drive, Mountville, Help The Fight is a nonprofit organization that supports individuals living with breast cancer. After her mother died from the disease and sister was diagnosed with it, Lynda Charles founded Help The Fight with her husband in 2009. What started as a bake sale has grown exponentially; Help The Fight has now raised over $800,000 to help breast cancer patients buy groceries and tires, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. As a nonprofit, Help The Fight can help anyone regardless of where they live, but Lancaster County and surrounding counties are its prime focus. On Sunday, March 6, Help The Fight will host its third annual designer bag bingo event, which will feature brands such as Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Coach, and Dooney & Bourke. Last year’s fundraiser was virtual due to COVID-19, but the upcoming cash-only event will be held in person at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Concert Will Highlight Love The historic 1854 First Reformed Church, 40 E. Founded in 1844 in London, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), also known as the Y, serves the community by offering programs that are intended to help people build healthy spirits, minds, and bodies. By instilling Christian ideas in its programs, the YMCA strives to develop and practice the principles of faith, hope, love, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Located at 800 Village Road, Lancaster, the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA branch opened in 2007. “We don’t like to really see ourselves as a ‘gym and swim,’” said executive director Rick Wagner. “We want to be a pillar of the community, so we like to offer community-based programming.” The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA offers programs such as swim lessons, summer camp, youth and adult basketball, diabetes prevention, personal training, adult volleyball, CPR and first aid training, e-sports, and more. In addition, the Y does not turn people away based on ability to pay. It offers financial assistance for those who are unable to afford membership rates. “We have such a great diversity,” noted Wagner. “We have people of different ages, races, and backgrounds. It’s like a community inside of a building, which is really nice.” Due to COVID-19, the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA was closed during part of 2020. Since reopening, the branch has welcomed back 80% of its members and wants that number to grow. Moving forward, Wagner said he wants to build community partnerships and be viewed as an organization on which the community can rely. Kilgore. “It’s gradually rebuilding.” CEF is an international organization founded in 1937, with an active branch in Lancaster County since 1944. “Our purpose is threefold: to evangelize, disciple, and establish children in a local church,” said Kilgore. Clubs are open to any child who attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by
a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. We try to connect them to that partner church,” she said. Good News Club meetings, which are held after school, involve a Bible lesson; a memory verse; songs; games; small group time, which is called Wonder Time; and missions. Each semester has its own theme. The spring 2022 series is called “The Early Church - God’s Power in Action.” The program has a rotating six-year curriculum. Volunteers are an integral part of

the program. “We try to have one adult for every six children,” said Kilgore, who noted that volunteers are trained to use the curriculum. In the fall of 2021, Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) Good News Clubs went live again across Lancaster County and beyond. In the spring of 2022, in-person clubs are planned for elementary-age students in the school districts of Columbia, Conestoga Valley, ELANCO, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Hempfield, Lampeter-Strasburg, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Pequea Valley, Lancaster, Warwick, and Octorara. Virtual clubs will be offered in Cocalico, Donegal, Manheim Central, and Solanco school districts. A program for sixth- through eighth-grade students will also be starting at Martin Meylin Middle School in LampeterStrasburg School District. “We would like to get the clubs all restarted,” said Lisa Kilgore, director of CEF of Lancaster County, who noted that more than 30 clubs were meeting in the county prior to the onset of COVID-19. “We had 17 clubs last fall, plus a Zoom club, and we will have more than 20 this spring,” noted
