ucinda Hughes hopes people will be dying to read her new book. The Mount Joy resident self-published “Death Wish - Death Is a Funny Thing” on Dec. 20, 2025. It is available on Amazon in hardback, paperback, and Kindle. Signed copies are for sale at Jack’s Family Tavern, the Millersville restaurant she owns along with her husband, Chris. The premise of the tome is simple. Hughes conducted Zoom interviews with well-known comedians such as Colin Quinn, David Attell, and Ron Bennington and asked them about the loss of loved ones. “They’re mainly from the New York area, because they are the ones I know and became friends with over the years,” she said. “I just love comedy, and I love stand-up. I always have. I go to a lot of shows. After the shows, I

Penn Manor is celebrating National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) by inviting girls from the district to learn more about the school’s sports offerings. Penn Manor’s third annual event will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the high school’s auxiliary g ymnasium, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The first 75 girls to register will receive a T-shirt. Go to @pmathletics on Instagram or one of the Comets’ teams’ social media sites for more information about how to register. The activity will precede a girls’ basketball game against Kennard-Dale, which will tip off at 2:30 p.m. in the main gym. Those who attend the NGWSD festivities will receive free admission to the basketball game. Rachel Suter, a first-grade teacher at Hambright Elementary School and head coach of the Comets’ wildly successful varsity field hockey team, helps organize the occasion along with Penn Manor athletic director Pat Tocci. “Every sports team that’s participating will have an interactive station for girls to test out the sport and get a taste of it,” Suter said. “They’ll also be able to interact with our coaching staffs and some of our athletes as well.” Although she greatly appreciates the opportunity to meet future Comets, Suter stated that meeting Penn Manor High athletes is more significant than talking with the coaches.

areas items that they could purchase at a very low cost, and that’s very helpful for them, especially if they’re homeless or in need.” Mission Thrift Shop has aided Loft Community Partnership; The Hub, which ser ves the college students at Millersville Universit y; Columbia Food Bank; Millersville Area Meals on Wheels; Lumina; VisionCorps; Vickie’s Angels; Penn Manor Family Fund; The Cottage; the Library System o f L a n c a s te r Co u nt y ; t h e Preschool Express; Glad Tidings Home; and My Brother’s Keeper. “We appreciate all of the support, because we wouldn’t be able to keep this going if we didn’t have the donations,” said McMurtrie. “We take all kinds of clothing all year round, winter, summer, spring, fall - clothes, coats, men’s and women’s suits. We take things for children and babies. We just don’t take large furniture, but we can try to take some baby furniture and smaller items to put out. Then we also have a boutique area if we get items that are donated that are higher end and are priced a little bit higher. Overall, we’re very reasonably priced for anything when it comes to clothing, baby toys, books and puzzles, and knickknacks and dishes.” McMur trie said the shop does not discard any items that are donated. “For instance, any sheets and towels and blankets that we get that have stains,

call them if I want to, so it’s pretty exciting.” Hughes was inspired by another comedian. “There was a bit that Louis C.K. did, and it was about his mother,” she said. “His mother had died, and he described this van picking her body up because she had made the arrangements. He described it as just some van with an empty Gatorade bottle rolling around in the back. Comedians make fun of everything, and if you do it the right way, it’s funny.” Quinn first gained national prominence as the host of the MTV game show “Remote Control,” which debuted in 1987. “My husband knows this, but that’s when I first fell in love with him,” Hughes joked. “I’ve always loved him. He’s great. Every comedian that I’ve met, they are the nicest people, very generous, very giving, very friendly.” Hughes informed Quinn of her book idea in 2024. “I said, ‘Hey, I have this idea. What do you think?’” she said. “He’s said, ‘Oh, that’s great.’ And once he said that, I thought, ‘OK, I’m going to do it.’ So then I got in touch with all these comedians, and all of them said yes. I was really surprised. I took those interviews, and I intertwined my personal experiences with death and some weird facts from around the world.” Hughes noted that everyone reacts differently to death. “I think some people are pretty outrageous in the way they do it,” she said. “Other people are on the opposite end. I got it in my head that I really would like to hear their answers to some of these questions. I wrote a list of questions, just around death and before and after, and how it’s affected them.”

Everything that we get is either going out into the community or we keep here in the thrift shop and try and sell it.” Lois Raymond has been volunteering since shortly after the shop opened in 1988. “It’s been great,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed meeting a lot of customers that come in here, and the people that work here really are great to work with. It’s just a great thing to do, helping people that really can’t afford to get a lot of these things.” Treasurer Cher yl Zegers noted, “Our mission is to help other ministries financially. We are grateful for all those who contribute their gently used items and for those who come and buy them. We are also grateful for the many volunteers who help this thrift shop to run smoothly and would welcome anyone who would like to join our Mission family.” To volunteer, call the Millersville Community Church office at 717-872-4571. Her eldest son, Christopher, passed away. Hughes’ sister, Jennifer Miller, died in January 2025, four months after Hughes started writing “Death Wish - Death Is a Funny Thing.” Hughes is also motivated by her children Zach and Lila. Lila is studying music and creative writing at Elizabethtown College. Hughes wasn’t always interested in becoming a writer. “I’d never done anything like it before,” she said. “I went to Millersville University, and I did my papers at 3 o’clock in the morning and they were due at 6.” Now she acknowledges she’s got the writing bug. Her next book is already in the planning stages. “The idea circles around a famous comedian and their assistant,” said Hughes. “I have a couple notes written down, and I’m trying to set up an interview with an assistant of a famous comedian to just get some background and make sure I know exactly what they do.” In the meantime, Hughes wants “Death Wish - Death Is a Funny Thing” to provoke thought and stimulate dialogue. “I hope people talk more about death,” she said. “I know people do, but it’s always such a taboo subject, and you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. I feel like this book takes this seriously, because there are some serious and emotional stories in here. It also makes light of it, because what can you do? If it opens up conversations with other people, that’s awesome. That’d be great. The other thing is I love stand-up, and I hope people go to a stand-up show. I want to support these guys as much as I can because that’s what has supported me through my life.”

“I think it’s really important for (the younger students) to interact with our athletes,” she said. “The youth really look up to up to the high school kids I think more than they even probably realize. It’s just good motivation. I think it’s cool for them to meet me and the other coaches, but the athletes are the faces of our programs, and that’s what gets people to want to try our sport or other sports.” NGWSD will also provide a chance to learn about a wide variety of sports. “There are so many options,” said Suter. “It’s nice to like to try those (sports) that are off the beaten path a little bit. I think it also helps with our community engagement, getting people out to our games and events. It’s exposure to all of our sport programs, and it’s something fun to do together as a family.” More than 60 girls came to Penn Manor’s first NGWSD event, and 75 stopped by in 2025. “It’s been

growing each year,” said Suter. “I think that maybe in the first year it was like, ‘What is that?’ And then it was a good experience, and we did it again and it keeps growing. It’s a free event too, so there’s no financial commitment, which is nice for a lot of families.” Suter said she enjoys activities like this and is happy to participate. “I feel like sports has given me so much and really shaped who I am,” said Suter. “I just want everyone to have the opportunity and experiences that I’ve been given through sports.”

Trivia Event Planned The Moravian Center of Lancaster will present a trivia contest on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of 227 N. Queen St., Lancaster. Featured trivia questions will be about music and artists from the ‘50s through the ‘80s. The event is free, with prizes awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place winners.
