On Dec. 21, 2022, Penn Manor High School students gathered in the Millersville University indoor swimming pool for the Cardboard Regatta. Teams of students competed to see which of their cardboard boats would conquer the turbulent tide during the event, which was coordinated by Penn Manor physics teacher Barney Peace.

Prior to the actual race, each

team of students was tasked with designing its own boat made almost entirely from cardboard. Students had to apply what Peace taught them about buoyancy force to calculate how high the water would rise and predict how much mass the boat would hold. Students’ main objective was to ride their boats from one end to the other while paddling with their hands. “It’s good experience for the kids in engineering, design and application,” said Peace. “We had a high rate of

success where the boats made it to the end of the pool. Overall, it was a very successful event.”

Peace graded the students on their calculations when designing the boat as well as the boat’s performance during the race, and they had to abide by specific rules when constructing their ships. Students could not double layer the cardboard or cover their entire boat with tape. The boats did not need to be waterproof; they only needed to make it to the end of the pool.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, local professor Rusty Banks will perform a concert titled “Creatures: Some Mythical” at The Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and include several visual art projections created by Dan Zdilla and Andy Babin.

last year, a position that his cousin Gillian took over at the beginning of this year’s season.

Mike’s journey with basketball began when he was a student at Solanco, where he played on the varsity basketball team for three years. Mike’s family has always been heavily involved in the sport; his uncle was the head coach of the basketball team during his senior year, and his father was the junior varsity coach. “It’s always been a part of our family,” said Mike. “From a young age, I wanted to play basketball for a living. After growing up, I realized that if I wanted to keep doing it, I would need to become a coach.” Immediately after graduating from Solanco High School in 2001, Mike became involved with coaching the school’s boys’ team and the girls’ team as he attended college. After coaching at Solancofor 12 years,

with the audience’s perception of space and sound. The resulting piece features guitar melodies that shift from one end of the room to the other in an attempt to blur the lines between reality and imagination. The theme of the show follows its methods closely. Each movement depicts a different creature that is surrounded in lore; some of the creatures are real and some are fictitious.

“It started out with cryptids, and then I started adding real creatures that just have mythical qualities,” said Banks. “They’re all mythical in some way. The show splits the difference

between the real and the mythical.”

The first movement is named after the hoop snake, a rare creature that Banks remembers hearing about while growing up in rural Alabama.

According to those who claim to have seen it in person, the hoop snake is a reptile that travels by biting its own tail and rolling down hills like a wheel. Banks mimics the behavior of the hoop snake in his movement by using an echo effect while playing the guitar so that each note is repeated. “Much like the tale of the hoop snake, this music in the piece seems to chase itself,” Banks said.

The concert will comprise six movements, each named after a different creature that will be visually represented with a collage made by Dan Zdilla. For example, one of the movements is named after the hellbender - a very rare but very real salamander.

According to folklore, the hellbender protects fish from fishermen by covering fishing hooks

Prior to the Section One match between Solanco and visiting Penn Manor on Jan. 11 in Quarryville, the

two wrestling programs took a moment to recognize the life of Jerry Miller. Joining both teams on the mat

with slime so that fish won’t bite them. The accompanying collage portrays the hellbender protecting a pond full of fish.

Banks and Zdilla collaborated on the musical and visual aspects of the show and enlisted Babin to project the collages onto the stage during the performance. Banks has worked with both Zdilla and Babin on other projects in the past and is an adjunct professor at Millersville University, where he teaches guitar and virtual instruments.

“One thing I hope to do with the show is to make the audience question the space they’re sitting in and make it seem like things are happening that aren’t possible,” said Banks. “I want it to feel like the audience is taking a journey into those collages and meeting those creatures.”

was Jerry’s wife, Karen Miller, along with Jerry and Karen’s daughter, Tonya Grassel, and grandsons, former Penn Manor wrestlers Trevor and Ty Grassel.

Jerry, an avid support and contributor to both the Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling programs, passed away on July 29, 2022. One of Jerry’s many passions in life was wrestling, and he always made Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling a priority. Jerry was an elementary wrestling coach for Solanco for many years, including when his son Troy began wrestling. He also volunteered in the Solanco Wrestling Booster Club and was one of the many people who helped with the formation of the original wrestling building at Solanco.

Later in life, as Jerry’s grandsons started their careers at Penn Manor, he continued volunteering his time, now to Penn Manor, to help the program in any way he could, volunteering at many events and always being in the stands to cheer on his grandsons and the rest of the Penn Manor team.

At the time of his passing, his family asked that contributions be made to both the Penn Manor and Solanco wrestling programs to honor his memory and the commitment he had to both programs.

While Penn Manor and Solanco have shared a competitive rivalry over the years, both programs share a passion for wrestling and respect for each other, just as Jerry embodied throughout his life. The Solanco and Penn Manor match has always held a special significance to both programs,

Rachor’s Pin Secures the Miller Mallet Trophy

The Section One rivalry between Solanco and Penn Manor carried a little more meaning last Wednesday, January 11 in Quarryville. The two teams were vying for the inaugural “Miller Mallet” trophy in recognition of Jerry Miller, a big supporter of both programs.

So maybe it was fitting that Penn Manor, with a match-sealing heavyweight fall by Chris Rachor, lifted the Comets to a 38-33 victory. After all, two of Millers’ grandsons, Trevor and Ty, were standout wrestlers for Penn Manor.

“I believe both of the heavyweights are first year wrestlers,” said Comet boss Brandon Vernalli. “Chris showed a lot of heart.

“It’s always a fun match against Solanco,” he continued. “This is a good confidence booster, not only for Chris but the whole team.”

Caden Rutt (106) put Solanco on the board with a 1:58 fall but Gavin Boland answered with a tech fall at 113. The Comets forged ahead when Travis Clawson pinned at 120 and Gabe Midile (126) pulled out a tight 5-3 decision for a 14-9 lead.

The Mules roared back with a 6-0 decision, falls at 139 and 145 and a forfeit at 152 to go in front 27-14.

Not to be out done, the visitors countered. Josh Zook worked the fastest fall of the night, pinning Hunter Touchton in 39 seconds before a first period fall by Blaine

Plastino (172) pushed Solanco’s advantage to 33-20.

But then the Mules forfeited at 189 and 215, leaving the Comets in striking distance, 33-32. Jamar Moore worked a first period takedown and nearfall points for a 5-0 first period advantage and appeared to have Rachor pinned in the second period before a flurry saw Rachor scramble to the top and secure the victory with a fall at 3:09.

The Comets were coming off some mixed results at the Manheim Township duals on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Manor suffered a tough 37-36 loss to the hosts in the opener. Fighting off a 24-6 deficit, Rogers (189) scored the first of five Comet falls to take a 36-30 lead with one bout left. That went to the Streaks and tied the match at 36-36.

“They won on criteria,” said Vernalli, “winning seven bouts to our six. We came out flat and we were missing Josh Zook (160) to an illness. Having him in the lineup would have helped. Overall, it wasn’t a terrible day.”

Rachor (285), Riley Evans (107), Boland (114) and Clawson (121) worked four straight falls, three coming in the first period, to knot the score.

The Comets also suffered a 40-33 loss to Cocalico. Rogers, Rachor, and Boland again recorded falls and Ethan Farmer (133) earned a 15-13 decision.

“Travis and Teagan were 5-0 on

the day and Gavin was 4-1, giving up a tough OT loss to a returning PIAA state place winner,” added Vernalli. “I was impressed with our heavyweight wrestlers. Racher came up big against Cocalico, pinning his opponent in the third period when the match was tied at 1-1.”

BOWLING

In back-to-back league matches last week the Comets rolled a 7-0 shutout over Lebanon on Thursday, Jan. 5 before suffering a 4-3 loss to CV on Friday. It was Manor’s third 43 loss of the season.

Senior Josh Stock rolled a matchhigh 650 to spark the shutout. Eva Brubaker (563), Chris Hull (520), Corinne Smith (488) and Lacey Slaymaker (480) wrapped up the scoring.

Friday the Comets got off to a slow start. CV took the first game 979-929 and did even better in game two, winning 1041-975, before the Comets pulled together for a 1093-897 win.

“Our sophomores, Chris Hall and Kayla Wasche led us back in that third game,” said head coach Chris Vital. “The way it was going I was worried that they would shut us out. Now we’re still 2 points ahead of MT in the standings.”

Hull rolled a 245 in that third game and Wasche followed with a 238 and hit “7 of 8 strikes,” said Vital. “CV is for real. We just had too many open frames.”

Stock finished with a 640 series, Hull, with a team-high 245 game,

followed with a 630 with Slaymaker three pins back. Smith (526) and Brubaker (336 in two games) also contributed.

In a key matchup Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Comets took control early, winning the first two games en route to a 5-2 win over McCaskey. Stock was untouchable with a 761 series. Slaymaker followed with a 636 with Brubaker (587) and Wasche (557) close behind. Hull and Smith combined for a 563.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

At Hempfield, Friday, Jan.6 the Comets snatched up its third straight win with a convincing 4840 Section One nod at Hempfield. Down 8-5 in the first quarter, the Comets held the Knights to three second quarter points, poured in 16

and took a 21-11 lead at the break.

“Brin Groff (9 points) popped in three triples, two in the second quarter, to spark our run,” said head coach Mike Glackin. “Once we rebounded from that first quarter Hempfield never took the lead.”

Not to be outdone, the Knights forged back in the third quarter, outscoring the Comets 13-6 to pull within three, 27-24, but senior guard Izzy Kligge led a fourth quarter charge, knocking down 10 of her career-high 16 points, to spark the visitors.

“Izzy made sure we beat their press and Paityn Smith came off the bench with five of her nine points,” Glackin noted. “When they started knocking down some shots, we got a bit nervous but I’m proud of them. They handled the pressure. We’re

headed in the right direction.”

Alayzha Twyman chipped in with six points, five rebounds, four assists and six steals. Joelle Kroesen (2 pts) led with six rebounds.

Less than 24 hours later, Dallastown’s 23-6 run through the middle two quarters proved too much to overcome and the Comets dropped a 38-20 home game.

“It was 4-3 them in the first quarter but as the game wore on, we looked tired,” said Glackin.

The Comets traveled to undefeated Lebanon Tuesday, Jan 10. Despite a spirited first quarter that left the hosts with a slim 17-13 edge, Manor struggled down the stretch, losing 63-30. Rineer and Twyman combined for 13 points while the Cedars placed three in double figures.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The Comets, looking for their first Section One win, gave section leader Hempfield (9-2 overall) all they could handle in Millersville Friday, Jan 6. Unfortunately, close wasn’t enough and, despite a game-high 15 points from Ethan Benne, the Knights pulled out a 48-40 win.

Manor held a 23-22 lead at the break, but the Knights exploded after the break, pouring in 19 to take the lead for good. Tied at 28, Hempfield used a 9-0 to gain momentum.

Aiden Mattern also hit for double figures with 12.

Less than 24 hours later, the Comets secured its fifth win of the season, using a dominating second half to flip a 26-23 first half deficit into a 61-54 road win.

Dhamir Wesley poured in a season-high 16 points, Benne dropped 15 and DeShawn Stanley and Nathan Schmidtke combined for 21.

In a battle to move out of the basement in the Section One standings, the Comets secured its third win in four games, dominating a winless Lebanon squad 65-39.

Benne netted 20 of the teams’ 40 first half points and Wesley, who added 11, controlled the paint as the Comets, who held the Cedars to four second quarter points, sprinted to victory.

Do’s And Don’ts Of Healthy Weight Loss

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.

Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.

DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a highprotein diet can help to shed up to

80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.

DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.

DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.

DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-

Cardboard Regatta

Students who did not physically ride a boat during the competition participated in a variety of other ways, serving as the event’s masters of ceremonies, interviewing each team and helping to get the boats in and out of the pool. Peace also encouraged students to decorate their vessels to earn extra points, and many students wore matching costumes to fit their boat’s theme. At the end of the regatta, the students were graded on how quickly their boat made it to the end of the pool, and students whose boat finished the fastest earned their team bragging rights for the rest of the year.

Peace has held events similar to the Cardboard Regatta in the past, but this year marks the first time

“Blast Into Square Dance”

Planned

DoPasO Square Dance Club will hold Blast Into Square Dance on Saturday, Jan. 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville. Attendees will learn the basics of modern western square dancing. Square dancing is done to a wide variety of music styles and is a multigenerational activity. natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.

DO get moving

more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.

DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.

DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine

that it was offered to students at Penn Manor High School. Peace organized a yearly Cardboard Regatta at his previous school in York County and brought the event with him when he began teaching at Penn Manor in August.

Peace plans to organize another Cardboard Regatta in the spring

semester with his next class and expects it to involve twice as many students than before. “This is something the students will always remember from my class,” said Peace. “Some of them can’t believe their boat will float. I love seeing the excitement on their faces in the pool.”

is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.

DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of calorie-counting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.

DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will host two field trips in January, which are free and open to the public. Participants must register with the group leader prior to the day of the trip.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, the venue will be Riverfront Park near Marietta with a 10 a.m. start. The target birds will be mergansers and other winter waterfowl along the river as well as ruby and golden-crowned kinglets, brown creeper, and yellow-bellied sapsucker in nearby trees. To register,

Miller

contact Emily Broich at 717-3339146 or emilybroich@gmail.com.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, the venue will be Safe Harbor Dam and Observation Road, Conestoga, with a 9 a.m. start. The trip is designed for beginners, but everyone is invited. Binoculars will be available to borrow. The target birds include waterfowl, bald eagles, other raptors, and winter migrants. To register, contact Roger Stoner at 717-393-9030.

reflected by the intensity on the mat whenever these two teams meet.

In light of that, and to honor Jerry Miller’s lifetime of contributions to both programs, Penn Manor and Solanco will annually battle for the Miller Mallet trophy. This mallet, complete with Jerry’s hand-engraved initials, was owned by Jerry and used extensively in his metal working.

Jerry’s family donated the mallet to both programs as a trophy that will be awarded to the winning team from each year’s dual. The Miller Mallet is intended to honor and remember Jerry’s commitment to both wrestling programs and to add to the strong tradition and rivalry between Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling for years to come.

Sports frompg 4

“Ethan and Dhamir were the story,” said Bellew. “Dhamir had 18 rebounds and 4 assists in helping lead our transition game. And Ethan can be difficult to stop with his length and variety of finishes around the basket.

“And we only had 13 turnovers,” he added. “That tends to be our Achilles heel.

“More importantly, it was great to have the opportunity to give everyone on the team a chance to play. Zach Tawfick, Asher Peters, and Jason Andro practice and push our guys every day and rarely get the opportunity to play. It was great to see them get game action.”

The starters sat the entire fourth quarter.

Nate Schmidke and Devin Figueroa combined for 15 points.

Harlem Quartet Plans Concert

The Arts at Millersville University will present the Harlem Quartet in concert on Friday, Jan. 20, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held in Biemesderfer Hall of the Winter Visual & Performing Arts Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., on the campus of Millersville University (MU).

The New York-based Harlem Quartet consists of violinists Ilmar Lopéz-Gavilán and Melissa White, violist Jaime Amado, and cellist Felix Umansky. As artists in the annual McIlwaine Concert and masterclass, the quartet will work with MU Tell School of Music students who will perform on select works with the quartet.

In September 2021, MU presented the documentary “Los Hermanos,” which tells the story of Harlem Quartet founder Ilmar and his brother Aldo Lopéz-Gavilán. The

Cuban-born music virtuosos also visited live via Zoom for a discussion of their story.

The upcoming Harlem Quartet performance is made possible through the Melva S. McIlwaine Concert and Masterclass Endowment Fund. Since 2009, the endowment has provided an opportunity for the MU campus and greater community to enjoy nationally and internationally recognized artists in vocal and instrumental music, along with an opportunity for MU music students to work with and appear on stage with the visiting professional musicians.

To purchase tickets, visit www.ArtsMU.com, call 717-8717600, or visit the box office at The Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, or in the Student Memorial Center on the MU campus.

Basketball Coach

Mike took a position as the head coach for Dayspring Christian Academy’s varsity boys’ basketball team. “Just seeing the improvement of players and the impact of their progress makes being a coach rewarding,” said Mike.

When Mike was the assistant coach of the Solanco High School girls’ team, his uncle was the head coach and Gillian was a player. Mike credits Gillian with introducing him to girls’ basketball. “It’s really cool to share the experience of coaching with her,” said Mike. “It’s her first time coaching and it’s cool to be a part of it.”

One of the things that Mike values the most about the basketball program is its ability to help kids develop skills that will serve them in other areas of their lives. While on a team, students learn how to get along with other people, how to confront adversity and disappoint-

ment and how to respond quickly to obstacles with positivity. “(Players) make a huge impact individually, but it’s still a team sport,” said Mike. “In other sports, you might be able to specialize in one area of the field, but in basketball you’re involved with every play.”

Mike describes his coaching technique as personal and individualistic. Instead of focusing on the technical aspects of playing the game first, Mike prefers to adjust his coaching methods to fit each player on the team. “It’s all about the people,” said Mike. “You have to approach the people in front of you and tweak your techniques to them.”

Mike hopes to build up the basketball program moving forward and looks forward to coaching alongside Gillian. “The plan is to keep getting the kids excited about basketball,” Mike said.
