TheCostume Shop at Millersville University, 164 W. Cottage Ave., began as a project of Millersville University to acquire a collection of theatrical costumes to be rented by the public. Over the years, the collection has grown extensively and has been used by members of the community for anything from school plays to costume parties.

The Costume Shop’s collection primarily served as a wardrobe for Millersville University’s theater department to use in performances.

In 1982, Jean Loeb of Lancaster donated a large collection of clothing, which she had acquired from a costuming company in Philadelphia. The company, called Wass & Son, outfitted thousands of people performing in plays and attending costume parties

throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, meaning that each piece of the donation was made from authentic, vintage materials. Loeb kept the collection at a warehouse in Columbia until she donated it to The Costume Shop, greatly expanding Millersville’s previously modest collection.

projects, high school and college theater actors, and couples that are planning a themed wedding; each customer is allowed to browse the collection and hand-pick his or her desired outfit. “Sometimes people will come in with an idea, so we help them build the outfit they’re looking for,” said Priscilla Kaufhold of Centerville, who acts as manager of The Costume Shop. “People have more fun when they can get their hands on the costumes.”

Millersville Community Church, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville, will offer a free small group program for individuals who are struggling with mental health challenges beginning on

Wednesday, Feb. 1. The program, titled Living Grace, will conclude on Wednesday, May 31, and each session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8 p.m. Millersville Community Church will provide child care free of charge during the group meetings. See Living Grace pg 2

The Costume Shop aims to make its collection accessible to people with a range of costuming needs. The shop has rented its inventory out to children who need a historically accurate costume for school

Kaufhold has been involved with The Costume Shop since 1984 and has watched the collection grow as it has acquired pieces from local stores and theaters. Kaufhold graduated from Hempfield High School in 1977 and wore pieces from Loeb’s collection as a dancer in the school’s production of “Annie Get Your Gun.” Kaufhold earned an undergraduate degree in

Christmas Tree Recycling Program Posted

County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including

nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the

funds are used to purchase emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.

According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be

LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, has announced its upcoming hours and a program.

LancasterHistory will be closed to the public through Monday, Jan. 16. All operations will reopen for the 2023 season on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

LancasterHistory will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with tours of Wheatland from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Research Center will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The first Regional History Colloquium of 2023 will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26. Doors will open and the reception will begin at 5 p.m. The lecture will start at 5:30 p.m., and it will also be streamed via Zoom. The program is sponsored by The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia.

Towson University professor Andrew Diemer will discuss his latest book, “Vigilance: The Life of William

Still, Father of the Underground Railroad.” William Still was born free in New Jersey, the youngest son of parents who had escaped from slavery. In the decades leading up to the Civil War, Still organized an abolitionist network that aided hundreds of freedom seekers who passed through Pennsylvania. He then published the stories of these freedom seekers.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the museum store while supplies last. Diemer will be available to sign copies of his book starting at 5 p.m.

This program is free and open to the public. In-person attendance requires advance registration in order to guarantee a seat. Due to capacity restrictions, tickets may not be available at the door. Virtual attendance requires

available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.

For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

This will be the second year that Millersville Community Church has hosted Living Grace, which was an idea conceived by Kelly Dennis, a member of the congregation who works as a therapist. “I’ve noticed an increase in anxiety and depression after the pandemic,” said Dennis. “Church leaders may not be educated to deal with these issues, but a lot of people who are struggling go to their church leaders first.”

nis emphasized that as she is a licensed therapist, she will only act as a facilitator for the group and that the program should not replace professional care.

“I would like to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges for folks,” said Dennis. “I want to let them know that they are supported and cared for and that they can do that for each other.”

advance registration in order to receive the Zoom link.

To register, visit www. lancasterhistory.org or call 717-392-4633. Registration will close online on Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. The online version of this program will also be recorded and uploaded to LancasterHistory’s YouTube channel after the event.

Prior to Jan. 26, those who plan to attend should confirm the location of this event as it may change due to community health concerns or weather conditions. LancasterHistory will notify ticketholders of any change in date or venue, such as a change to an online-only program. Attendees should also consult LancasterHistory’s Health & Safety Protocols prior

Dennis began to research ways that the church could provide for those dealing with mental health issues and discovered a curriculum provided by The Grace Alliance, a nonprofit organization that offers mental health resources.

The Grace Alliance workbook and Living Grace program combine biblical and scientific information for members of the group; during each session, Dennis will facilitate the group as it discusses a specific issue related to mental health and then explore Bible studies and neuroscience that relate to the issue. Afterward, participants can further discuss and ask questions, and they are provided with an exercise to practice during the interim between meetings. Den-

Dennis attributes the spike in mental health-related issues to the uncertainty that the world has experienced both during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the time following.

Living Grace was well received by the community in its first year, and only a few small changes have been made to the program. Dennis added a discussion point on cognitive behavioral therapy this year to better educate participants of the group, and she switched the meeting time to the evening to accommodate more participants’ schedules. “Everything else from last year remains the same; it was spot on,” said Dennis. “(The program) is thorough but also pretty simple.”

To register for Living Grace, call Dennis at 717951-0266 or email kelly fdennis@yahoo.com.

Avoid going outside until snow and ice are removed from walkways and parking lots, especially after it gets dark. Once the sun sets, even if a path has been cleared, refreezing is more likely to occur. If you do need to leave the house, making sure that you have a pair of shoes with non-skid soles greatly decreases your chance of slipping on ice or wet pavement. Any footwear that provides significant traction will make a winter stroll much safer.

If you use a cane, ensure that it is equipped with a rubber tip that has been recently replaced and that has not been worn smooth. Even if a walkway is cleared, remain wary of rock salt that may have been applied to the ground; it could result in a loss of traction for those who use a walker as the wheels are more likely to skid on the substance.

“Slipping and falling on ice hazards is one of the biggest issues during the wintertime,” said Bobbi-Jo Casseday, vice president of environmental services at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. in Columbia. “(St. Anne’s) makes sure we keep our walkways clear and that residents watch out for refreezing and ice patches.”

Another important practice

during the winter months is to ensure you are stocked with the necessary supplies in case you are unable to leave your home. A winter storm may also prevent meals and prescriptions from being delivered. Keep your kitchen stocked with enough food and water to last for at least one week and make sure you have nonperishable food that does not require cooking or refrigeration in the event that you lose power. Keeping your medicine cabinet full of needed prescriptions prior to a storm is also good practice; try to have prescriptions filled ahead of time if your area is expecting harsh weather.

Those who drive should stock their cars with basic emergency supplies for the winter. In case of emergency, a car should have a first aid kit, blankets, warm winter clothing, a windshield scraper, a shovel and a flashlight.

Don’t forget to check on your neighbors, relatives and friends. Aside from the physical dangers of the winter, inclement weather and limited travel can mean many seniors don’t receive as many visitors as usual. Practicing safety measures and checking in on others in the community can make this time of year safer for everyone.

Art Shows Announced

The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave, Strasburg, has announced two shows. LCAA will hold its “Winter Membership Show” with an opening reception on Sunday, Jan. 15, from 1 to 4 p.m.

In the Steinmetz Gallery, works by award-wining artist Richard Chandler Hoff will be featured. Hoff is a nationally recognized artist working exclusively in graphite pencil on

paper. He illustrates life in America during the 1940s, relying on extensive research to accurately depict that decade. The shows will run from Jan. 15 through Thursday, Feb. 16. The galleries will be open on Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Admission is free. For additional information, visit www.lcaaonline.org or call 717-687-7061.

Woman’s Club Plans Meeting

The Millersville Woman’s Club will meet at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville. Cathy Cieslinski from Project Lifesaver will be the presenter.

Project Lifesaver is a search-and-rescue program that aids individuals who wander as a result of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, autism, developmental disabilities and other cognitive challenges. Project Lifesaver has more than 1,200 participating agencies in the U.S., Canada and Australia. This group provides equipment, training, certification and support to law enforce-

ment, public safety organizations and community groups.

In Lancaster County, the Pilot Club of Lancaster works with local police departments to provide Project Lifesaver. People at risk of wandering wear a personalized transmitter 24/7; the transmitter is attached to the wrist or ankle and emits a signal on an individually assigned FM radio frequency. A handheld mobile locator tracking system is used to find any participant who has wandered.

All women in the area are invited to attend this program. For more information, call 717-917-6677 or 717872-4834.

Improving Comets Post Wins Over Solanco, CV

When head coach Mike Glackin, an assistant coach at Penn Manor last season, took over the Comets he knew they would be rebuilding. Four starters moved on and just one returned Izzy Kligge. Add to that the four freshmen (Joelle Kroesen, Lilly Rineer, Paityn Smith and Alayzha Twyman) who are getting quality minutes. All things considered, the Comets are growing and getting better every time they step on the court.

Over the holidays they competed in the Solanco Holiday Tournament where they went 1-1, opening with a 3736 heartbreaker against Exeter before rebounding with a convincing 44-36 nod over the hosts. Then last Tuesday they earned a 28-22 win over Section Two’s Conestoga Valley, giving them three wins to date.

Trailing Exeter 14-9 at the half, the Comets exploded for 19 third quarter points to forge ahead 28-22. Brin Groff’s triple with 3:37 left in the third tied the game at 1818. She drained a second trey with 50 ticks left, pushing the

lead to 24-20 before a pair of Rineer free throws made it 28-22 with eight minutes left to play.

Back-to-back buckets by Twyman gave Manor its biggest lead of the night, 3226. They scored just four points after that as Exeter’s full court press proved to be too much for the youthful Comets. They did have possession with 12.5 seconds remaining and got off one last shot that fell short.

Groff, Twyman (6 rebounds) and Rineer all netted eight points in the loss but the Comets were just 6of-12 from the free throw line.

“I think the big factor was getting outscored 22-12 with points in the paint,” noted Glackin. “And eight of those were in the fourth quarter. Plus, we just didn’t handle their press very well.

“I thought Brin played one of her best games of the year with nine rebounds and zero turnovers to go along with her eight points,” he continued.

One night later the Comets zeroed in from three-point range, canning four in the first quarter, two straight by Kligge, and jumped out to a

14-4 lead over Solanco and never looked back, though Solanco did put together an impressive fourth quarter, outscoring the Comets 17-9 to keep things close.

Holding a 21-13 lead at the half, the Comets opened with a triple by Rineer and later in the quarter went on a 9-0 run for their biggest lead of the night, 33-17. B. Groff opened that run with back-to-back putbacks.

Solanco opened the fourth with a 10-0 run and got to within seven but a dismal showing from the foul line (11-of-24) prevented them from getting closer.

“They had 16 offensive rebounds, which is too many,” said Glackin. “But we did have nine assists, we’re averaging just five, and we shot 40% from three-point range. We did a better job of reversing the ball and attacking the hoop in order to work the ball inside out. We had more quality looks than usual and Izzy’s two threes really set the tone early.”

Rineer paced the attack with 14 points. Kligge and B. Groff each added seven. Smith and Carley Groff combined for 11.

“Lilly had a nice game,” said Glackin. “She had eight deflections, six steals and two assists. Brin led with 11 rebounds and is starting to become a more well rounded player. Paityn played great on the ball defense and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field,” he continued. “Plus it was nice to get the bench players some minutes. Jojo Bonnici scored the first two points of her varsity career.”

Against CV last Tuesday the Comets used a 10-5 run through the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Smith netted all four of her points that quarter while Rineer, Kligge and Twyman chipped in.

B. Groff, with five points in the third quarter, led the way with a game-high 10.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The boys’ basketball team entered the new year after suffering a string of six straight losses, including a two pointer at Elizabethtown. But that was last year. Tuesday, Jan. 3, the Comets, behind a game-high 25

points from Ethan Benne, earned a 57-49 victory at Conestoga Valley.

The Comets, with a 9-0 run to end the first quarter, lead 14-4 early. CV cut the lead to 19-17 midway through the second quarter, but Manor finished the half in front 23-17.

CV, with nine points from Griffen Rishell (24 for the game), again cut the lead to two, 32-30, late in the third frame but couldn’t get over the hump. Manor led 35-31 with eight minutes remaining.

Benne sparked a 22 point fourth quarter, netting 12, and the Comets held the Bucks to 18 points to earn the road win. The Comets were 12-for-17 from the foul line in the fourth and 15-for-25 for the game.

Devin Figueroa also hit double figures with 12.

Prior to CV, the Comets competed in the Warwick Holiday tournament. They opened with a 55-40 loss against Dallastown and then dropped a disappointing 4135 result against Lancaster Catholic.

Down just 27-23 at the half against the Wildcats, Manor struggled through the second half, falling 28-17. They were a slim 4-for-7 from the free throw line while the ‘Cats, who placed three players in double figures, were 15-of-24. Benne led the Comets with 9. Aiden Mattern added 8.

“Dallastown had 20 offensive rebounds,” said head coach Larry Bellew. “We had four and we committed eight more turnovers than they did. It’s difficult to win games when you lose those two categories by wide margins. The fact that it was a 2-3 possession game for the first half of the fourth quarter is a credit to the perseverance of the guys.”

Against the Crusaders, Manor got off to a slow start, falling behind 10-6, and finished slow, losing the fourth quarter 14-11 while winning the middle frames 18-17. They missed 12 free throws on the night in a game they lost by six.

Mattern, with ten points, was the only double-digit scorer.

“We have to value the ball, limit turnovers and focus on shot quality,” Bellew said.

“Our entire group, coaches, and players, need to come together and our level of play. We’ll get there. It’s just taking longer than we expected.”

WRESTLING

Over the holidays the Comets competed in the Neil Turner Classic at Conestoga Valley and came away with four medal winners. Gavin Boland (114) earned gold with a 14-10 finals decision over Alex Reed of Shikellamy. He advanced with four wins, including a 7-6 nod over Carden Wagner, Montgomery Area, in the semis.

“Gavin came away with another first place finish,” noted head coach Brandon Vernalli. “His last two matches were tough. He seems to be making a great transition here at Penn Manor.”

Travis Clawson (121) earned a second silver medal

finish at the Classic, suffering a 1:45 fall to Brant Harer, Montgomery Area, in the finals. Clawson posted a fall, a major decision and a tech fall to get to the finals.

“Travis didn’t have much of a challenge until he got to the finals,” noted Vernalli.

At 189, Teagan Rogers settled for third place, defeating Hershey’s Tristan Bingeman 5-0. He went 5-1 on the weekend. “Teagan wrestled a great tournament and showed some great heart battling back for a third-place finish in a tough bracket,” said Vernalli.

Riley Evans, at 107, finished in seventh place. He secured a 3:32 fall over Russel Lloyd (St. Georges Tech) to place. “Riley wrestled tough,” Vernalli said. “We saw some good things that we hope can transpire into the remainder of the season.”

On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Quarryville Library, located at 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will host its annual Go Fore Golf fundraiser. The event will have its first session from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and its second session from 6 to 8 p.m.

Go Fore Golf is a tradition at the Quarryville Library that began 12 years ago. For the duration of the day, the library is closed to regular patrons and does not check out books, take passport pictures, or offer computer usage. All of the furniture in the building is removed and stored to allow room for an 18-hole mini golf course that winds through each room. Players may have up to four members in a group, and each group is scheduled in fiveminute increments to keep the game running smoothly.

The event will also have additional entertainment present, such as a face painter and a balloon artist during the daytime session and live music during the evening session. The library’s café will sell food and drinks during the event, and all of its proceeds will support the library.

Each hole will have a different sponsor, which will decorate it with a unique design. “I think people come each year to see how each hole is decorated,” said Sharon Roche, program manager of the Quarryville Library. “We always get some very creative sponsors.”

Every participant of Go Fore Golf will receive a ticket that may be placed in one of the many prize buckets around the library. A drawing for each respective prize will be held at the end of the session, and prizes may include items such as vouchers for a free meal or auto-servicing or passes to a local attraction.

Go Fore Golf is one of the library’s largest yearly fundraisers and provides vital support to the library.

“Libraries don’t get the support they used to get, and our

costs are going up faster due to inflation,” said Roche. “Many people don’t realize how much our library offers.”

The Quarryville Library isn’t connected to a municipality, meaning that it doesn’t benefit from local taxes and relies entirely on donations.

The Quarryville Library offers a plethora of programs to the community, such as early literacy programs, outreach events within the Solanco School District, movie showings, clubs and job training services. “Parents of young children and the elderly are often isolated. The library is a place they can go and not have to buy anything to stay there and connect with others in the community,” said Roche.

To become a sponsor for the event, contact Roche at sroche@quarryvillelibrary.org.

Event To Share WatershedFriendly Practices

“Tap Talks: Watershed Friendly Property Certification Program” will be offered on Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Artifice Ales & Mead, 55 N. Main St., Manheim. The program is a collaboration between the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Stewards and Nurture Nature Center.

In the Master Watershed Stewards’ Tap Talks, local water resource professionals and Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward volunteers share information on water quality topics. Attendees of the upcoming program will learn how they can qualify their property for certification. They will learn how to reduce stormwater runoff, reduce pollution, conserve water and support wildlife and pollinators. The event will also include local brews, trivia and prizes.

There is no charge to participants, but space is limited and preregistration is recommended. To register, visit https:// extension.psu.edu/ and search for the program.

Bicycle Club Grant Program Posted

The Lancaster Bicycle Club’s grant program provides funds to support bicycle-related activities and initiatives in Lancaster County. In 2023, the Lancaster Bicycling Club will provide $30,000 in grants.

Grants will be made at the sole discretion of the Lancaster Bicycle Club. Grant funds primarily come from the net profits of the club’s annual Lancaster Covered Bridge Classic ride, which is held each August.

Grants can be requested by municipalities, schools, and nonprofit organizations for four primary reasons. Grants are available to improve the bicycling experience in Lancaster County, including items like bicycle repair stations, signs, and markings; for repair or maintenance of bicycling features like trails and covered bridges; for bicyclists’ rights and safety advocacy; and to promote bicycling in the county.

Applications are due by Tuesday, Jan. 31. To learn more and apply, visit www.lancasterbikeclub.net.
