Penn State Master Gardeners has announced that of all 67 counties in Pennsylvania, Lancaster County ranks first for certified pollinatorfriendly gardens, with 100 certifications in the county out of 944 statewide. The Master Gardeners noted that Lancaster County also takes second place for the number of new certifications awarded in 2020. Penn State Master Gardeners created this certification program to encourage the gardening public to help protect pollinators, many of whose populations are declining. According to Penn State

2021 marks the 25th year that the congregation of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, has partnered with its sister church in Tamshiyacu, Peru. Typically, a team of volunteers travels to Peru each summer to provide physical and spiritual support to the pastor and his congregation. 2020 was understandably different. Because of travel restrictions, MOPC opted to send funds to medical organizations in Iquitos, the major Peruvian city where past mission teams have stayed during their journeys to and from Tamshiyacu. The teams have developed relationships with health care workers in Iquitos. “During the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru, we were able to supply medical supplies and PPE (personal protective equipment) to the nursing staff and medical facilities,” said MOPC mission team leader Dan Henry. For the past few years, the MOPC mission team has held a Nuts ‘n’ Bolts consignment sale in January to raise money for visits to Tamshiyacu. This year, the proceeds will be reserved for
use in Peru, whether in the form of more donations of supplies or, God willing, an in-person visit. The consignment sale will be held at MOPC on Saturday, Jan. 9, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The snow date is Saturday, Jan. 16. Individuals may drop off their items to be consigned on Friday, Jan. 8, from 2 to 6 p.m. “You supply the items. We supply the space and tables,” Henry said. The mission team also supplies the cashiers, so vendors do not need to be present to consign their items. The team will reserve 20% of the purchase prices for the Peruvian mission, and the remainder will go to the vendors. Items for consignment may include anything from shops, garages, basements, and sheds. Past sales have included nuts and bolts, bicycles, golf clubs, hand tools, power tools, mowers, snow blowers, sports equipment, birdhouses, birdfeeders, and more. “We never know what all might be there,” Henry commented. “It has been (a) very successful (sale).” For more information about the Nuts ‘n’ Bolts consignment sale or to reserve space for items, readers may call Henry at 717-405-1113.

County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Sunday, Jan. 31. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to

The site is intended to showcase businesses, make contact information easy to find, bring Chamber members and clients together, and offer straightforward ways to promote events and other opportunities online, which is especially important at the moment. Kristen Phipps, who has a background in branding and design, created a new Chamber logo and fonts that Grim used on the website. The rooster and dusky green and yellow represent the agricultural roots of southern Lancaster County. “It was a fun project,” Grim commented. “Feedback has been very positive.” Currently, website content features a calendar, a membership directory, membership information, and a history and leadership page. The directory includes more than 215 listings, which are searchable by name or type of business, and a different business is featured every time the page refreshes. “It’s a tool for the community. Anybody can use (the
directory) to look for other Lancaster County businesses to work with,” Grim said. For businesses that may not have their own websites, the Chamber website is designed to fill the gap. “They can use it as a landing page of sorts,” Grim explained. “There’s heavy SEO (search engine optimization) force behind the site so these businesses have more of a presence on Google. Anything we can do to make it a better tool for the members is what we’re looking for.” Grim noted that the website will continue to be developed over the months and years to come. “ We have a great team that’s committed to the website,” he said. “We plan to roll out new features. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Greenwood Cemetery in Lancaster recently received support from local businesses, which pledged to donate their time and materials to help replace a section of a concrete slab. The slab replacement project is coordinated by Vietnam veteran Clyde Snyder, founder of Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard of Lancaster. When he found out about the need for repairs, Snyder, who had worked in the concrete business for many years, offered to find an affordable bid for the project. Dennis Funk & Sons, Columbia, will excavate and haul away the old slab. Troy Styer of Rohrer’s Concrete Company, Lititz, will donate concrete, and Barry Sauder of Sauder Brothers Concrete Company, Manheim, will also provide aid. The middle school students of six Lancaster County Catholic schools recently celebrated National Vocation Awareness Week. Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders from Our Lady of the Angels, Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Sacred Heart, Resurrection, Saint John Neumann, and Saint Leo the Great schools participated in a Zoom presentation with the Rev. Sawicki, director of vocation for the Diocese of Harrisburg, and Sister Marianne Therese Lallone, IHM, vocation director of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate
Heart of Mary of Immaculata. Sawicki video chatted with the boys in all six schools to share his story. He explained that when he was a sophomore in high school, many people asked him about his future plans. Someone told him that he had the “look of a priest,” and that was the beginning of many conversations and reflections which ultimately led him to his vocation. Sawicki explained that when seeking to discern one’s vocation, a person should pray. Sawicki has been a priest for 11 years.

Sawicki invited deacon Aaron Lynch to join the discussion. Lynch attended public school, started focusing on his Catholic faith in seventh and eighth grades, and entered the seminary right after high school. He is in his final year of seminary. Lynch shared that his studies are important, but it is most rewarding to focus on becoming a good priest. The boys’ presentation also included video segments from some of the other 23 seminarians ages 18 to 62 in the Harrisburg Diocese. They spoke about their favorite parts of seminary and being a priest, such as celebrating Mass and being a spiritual father. The seminarians also emphasized that they have fun, including taking part in flag football and soccer games. The school students were invited to ask questions at the end of the presentation.
Lallone, in her presentation to the girls, emphasized that God wants everyone to know the fullness of His love and that each person is given many different gifts and talents through which he or she can help others see God’s love for them. Lallone said that as each person grows, he or she feels a call to a particular way of life that is his or her vocation. Lallone shared her personal story and some further thoughts. She said that God always brings people back to the little “nudges” of His plan. She told the girls to pay attention to the people in their lives, to give God time and space through prayer to allow Him to reveal His plan for them, and to build a relationship with God. She added that they should be faithful to who they are and to themselves and their friends.
