Manyfire hazards remain dangerous year-round, but the winter season brings specific safety concerns and challenges for fire companies. As we attempt to keep our houses warm and well-lit during the frigid and darker winter months, several preventative and basic safety measures should be kept in mind to help reduce the risk of catastrophes occurring.

Of all the fire hazards that accompany the arrival of colder weather, space heaters are one of the most common fire starters and should be placed at a safe distance from any flammable items, such as beds, curtains and Christmas trees. Other methods of heating one’s home should also be utilized with care; when using a fireplace, only use natural wood. Plywood, treated wood and accelerants such as alcohol or gasoline should be kept out

of the fireplace. In fact, putting anything other than the right wood into a fireplace could be dangerous.

Decorations such as stockings and Christmas trees should be kept away from the fireplace, and Christmas trees that are not regularly watered will become dry and turn into a hazard.

Stoves and ovens can also prove hazardous if left unattended. “The biggest thing is making sure that you turn things off when you don’t need them,” said Rob “Stretch” Williams of New Providence, a member of the Refton Community Fire Company. “If something happens while you’re in bed, you won’t know until it’s too late. Most fires start between 12 and 4 a.m.”

A large factor in avoiding fires is preventative care. Local fire companies recommend that those with chimneys have them cleaned and inspected at least once a year. Uninspected chimneys may develop cracks that allow the fire to spread into

other parts of the house through the walls. Furnaces should also be serviced regularly through a heating company to prevent malfunctions.

Another common fire hazard during the winter is overloaded circuits. Making sure that lights are turned off at night and that Christmas lights are not perpetually lit can make a residence much safer.

In addition to fire hazards, driving conditions play a large role in wintertime woes. Although modern cars are equipped with more safety measures than ever before, driving on icy or snow-laden roads can be dangerous if drivers do not exert caution. “We don’t get the crashes like we used to, but you still want to make sure you’re being careful when driving in the winter.” said Williams.

Whether you’re baking, enjoying holiday decorations, or driving to work this winter, keeping in mind some tips from your local firefighter can make your holiday season, and theirs, much safer.

Whether you live in a rural part of the Southern End or on a city block in Lancaster, many of your neighbors consist of local wildlife; if you live on a farm in Holtwood or Ronks, you’re no stranger to the occasional herd of deer wandering through your land, and local foxes are notorious for making themselves at home

in garages and sheds in Lancaster city and the surrounding suburbs. While your human neighbors might drop off a plate of cookies or hot chocolate this time of year, your furry friends exhibit much different traditions, and being able to recognize them makes the winter months safer for both parties.

Every year, Lisa Sanchez, a park naturalist with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visits different parts of the county to help the public understand animals’ behavior during the winter. Sanchez explains what different types of animals are prone to doing in response to the cold weather and clears up misconceptions about behaviors such as hibernation. “If you’re someone who wants to feed the birds, it helps to realize what else might be eating at the feeder,” said Sanchez. “It’s always good to have awareness.” See Winter Animals pg 3

The modern world has evolved through the widespread use of new technology in a variety of ways; during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and businesses heavily relied on technology to safely continue operating. Although the world is no longer in a state of emergency lockdown, organizations such as Junior Achievement of Southcentral Pennsylvania (JASCPA) have found that procedures adopted during the pandemic continue to prove themselves useful.

JA Inspire

In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their students. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual

platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of the career fair building accompanied by virtual students and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths.

“Celestial Light” Concert Planned

“Celestial Light,” the First Friday organ concert, will take place on Friday, Jan. 7, at 8 p.m. in the historic 1854 First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Organist Larry Hershey will return to the console of the vintage 1958 analog Allen organ to perform a 30minute concert. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

Hershey will play three chorale preludes on the tune “How Brightly Shines the

Morning Star’” by composers Johann Pachelbel, Michael Burkhardt, and Max Drischner. The program also includes a prelude on “O Trinity of Blessed Light” by Bruce Simonds and “For Us a Child Is Born” from “Cantata 142” by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The concert is free and open to the community. For more information, contact the church office at 717-397-5149.

fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”

Students participating in JA Inspire are provided with a virtual backpack that allows them to save videos, documents and any information provided by a booth that they want to keep for future reference. Students can log back into the fair at any time to review materials or visit more booths, and they can email specific questions to company representatives.

Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical location. Although schools resumed many inperson programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue using virtual platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire. “A lot of people wanted to get back to having in-person career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce. “Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about transportation and allows students to see more companies in a shorter amount of time.”

JA Inspire is provided to schools free of charge, and in 2022, JASCPA was given funding to open JA Inspire to adults in addition to schools. Adults interested in the career fair can contact their local PA CareerLink agency for more information.

JA Inspire will return this year and will be open from Wednesday, March 1, to Friday, June 30. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/ja inspirefair.

Crop And Craft Will Encourage Creativity

You’re invited to get creative during a two-day event at Donegal High School. Crop and Craft will be held from 3 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, in the high school cafeteria, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. The event is an opportunity for crafters to work on their projects in a fun, relaxing environment, said Susan Heydt, who is organizing the event. Proceeds from the Crop and Craft will benefit scholarships to attend Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competitions and Kiwanis Key Leader Camp.

“Scrapbookers, artists, fiber artists and crafters are invited to join in the fun of this time of camaraderie with others sharing similar hobbies,” stated Heydt, who is the Key Club adviser at the high school. “There is plenty of space to spread out, and we have people who use the tables to lay out big fiber pieces they’re working on.”

Participants will be able to work on anything they bring with them, and members of Donegal’s National Art Honor

Society (NAHS) will host breakout sessions throughout the event, featuring demonstrations on a variety of art mediums.

“The breakout sessions are a good opportunity to learn about something maybe you haven’t seen or heard of before,” said senior Isabelle Morrison, president of the NAHS, who will run one of the sessions.

Senior Madison Arroyo, president of Donegal’s Key Club, noted that students will help participants carry in supplies and get set up. She said she was surprised at how quiet the event was last time she attended. “Everyone is so focused on their projects,” she noted. “It’s just a relaxed, welcoming environment.”

Members of FBLA are taking care of marketing the event, said freshman Abbie Waldron, club treasurer.

“We’re handling the advertising, and we made the registration form and we’re tracking registration payments,” she stated. FBLA members participate in competitions throughout the year, which will be funded using proceeds from the Crop and Craft.

Winter Animals

Animals in Lancaster County are divided into three categories: those that remain active during the winter, those that migrate to a warmer climate, and those that hibernate. For those that remain active in the winter, such as foxes, raccoons, deer and various birds, Sanchez will explain how they find their food and where they are prone to making shelter. “I’ve had people realize during a

program what has been living in their yard,” said Sanchez. “Even if you’re on a hike, it’s good to be able to identify certain signs to know what’s in the vicinity.”

Sanchez often brings pelts, furs and animal skulls for people to familiarize themselves with and better identify them in the wild.

Groundhogs, bats, jumping mice, reptiles and amphibians are Lancaster County’s hibernators. Although reptiles and

compete in financial math in an upcoming event, and freshman Molly O’Brien will participate in a hospitality management competition later this month.

Heydt got the idea for Crop and Craft after hearing about a similar event organized annually by a sorority at Millersville University. Crop and Craft events were held in 2019 and 2020, and this year will mark the event’s return after a two-year absence during the pandemic.

Pizza and salad will be served Friday night, and coffee

will be available Saturday morning, along with soup and sandwiches for lunch. “The soups are awesome,” Heydt said, noting that parents make and donate them, with additional food provided by local businesses.

Registration for Crop and Craft is available at https://tinyurl.com/y43e52rr. Participants may pay at the door if room is available, but Heydt recommends preregistration. In the event of snow, the Crop and Craft will be postponed to Friday, March 3, and Saturday, March 4.

amphibians in other parts of the country don’t hibernate, cold-blooded creatures in Pennsylvania must remain underground for the duration of the cold season to keep from freezing. A common misconception that Sanchez often clears up about hibernation is the patterns of bears; while bears exhibit some of the same behaviors as hibernators, such as fattening up and resting, they are often active

on warms days and many female bears are awake to give birth to their young. Sanchez also warns people to stay clear of caves to avoid disturbing bats, which can’t afford to expend any energy until their food sources return in the spring.

Lecture To Focus On Fire Department

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a slideshow, titled “A (Short) History of Fighting Fires in Lancaster City: A Look at What Led to the County’s First Paid Fire Department,” during its 9 a.m. meeting on Saturday, Jan. 14, in Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Ty Lohr, an award-winning photojournalist from Camp Hill who has a passion for local history and interesting stories. His

interest in Lancaster’s fire department advanced while he was working on an article about its then-interim fire chief and learned that the department was heading into its 140th year as a paid entity. Lohr noted that the Lancaster City Bureau of Fire has the reputation as the county’s first paid fire department and ranks among the oldest in Pennsylvania; various factors led to the department’s organization in 1882. His talk will examine many of these issues, including past blazes, a famous arsonist and 19th- and 20th-century technologies. A question-and-

answer session will conclude the meeting.

Lohr grew up in northwestern Pennsylvania. After graduating from photography school, he worked at his hometown newspaper, The Titusville Herald, before job opportunities led him to the southeastern part of the state. He then spent seven years as a journalist, where his fascination with the region’s history increased. His love of history has now drawn him back to college, at Penn State Harrisburg, where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in social studies.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more information, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before 5 p.m. or at pge8507@aol.com.

DMVA Announces Grant Opportunities

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) has announced that the 2022-23 Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF) is accepting grant applications for programs and services benefiting Pennsylvania veterans. The DMVA will award VTF grants to nonprofit organizations, veteran service organizations, and county directors of veterans affairs across the state. Grant applications must be received no later than 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Grant funding is available for new, innovative or expanded programs or services operated by the county directors of veterans affairs or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs. The areas of emphasis for applicants in this

category are veterans outreach, transportation services, and homelessness.

Grant funding is also available to veteran service organizations with 501(c)(19) status and nonprofit organizations that have a mission of serving Pennsylvania veterans and have been granted 501(c)(3) status under the Internal Revenue Code. Funding priorities for applicants in this category are transportation services, behavioral health initiatives, homelessness, and employment and education.

Since the grant program began in 2013, 254 grants totaling $6,591,860 have been awarded to organizations providing services to veterans in Pennsylvania.

The VTF is funded by Penn-

sylvanians who voluntarily donate when applying for or renewing driver’s licenses, photo IDs, or motor vehicle registrations; purchase Honoring Our Veterans standard and motorcycle license plates; purchase Honoring our Women Veterans standard license plates; or make private donations.

The DMVA is authorized to solicit and accept donations to the VTF on behalf of the commonwealth. Tax-deductible donations can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information about donating by mail is also available on this website.
