OPEN AUDITIONS

Promise Players will hold open auditions for the musical comedy “Mobile, Home, Sweet Home” by Pat Cook on Sunday, Jan. 6, from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Auditions will take place at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. The production will be held in March. Auditions are open to adults age 18 and older. Auditioners will be asked to read from a script and to sing a one-minute song section of their choice (for which they should bring their own accompanist) or be prepared to sing the first verse of “Amazing Grace.” For details or to make an auditioning appointment, contact Doreen Creighton at dcreightn@epix.net.

The Gen. John H. Michaelis Chapter 327 of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Eagle Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The meeting will begin at noon. The speaker will be Larry Alexander, who will share the story of Merlin “Whitey” Groft, who fought in World War II. Membership in KWVA is open to all service members who served in Korea at any time from 1945 to the present or were in uniform serving anywhere from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. Women’s Bible Study Announces New Series Change of Pace South (COPS), a community women’s Bible study supported by the Friendship Foundation, will begin its winter session on Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence. Breakfast refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall prior to a time of worship and music in the church sanctuary. Four courses of study will be offered this session, including “God of Creation,” “Hoping for Something Better,” “Psalm 23: The Shepherd With Me,” and “Jesus Among Secular Gods.” “God of Creation: A Study of Genesis” by Jen Wilkin is a DVD-based study with a workbook that addresses deep questions: Where did everything come from? Why is the world so broken, and how can that brokenness be made right? The in-depth study of the first

11 chapters in Genesis will reveal a transcendent God and will aim to shape participants’ understanding of the Bible as a whole. The course will meet for a total of 13 weeks. The study of “Hoping for Something Better” by Nancy Guthrie will also meet for 13 weeks. According to Hebrews 11:40, God has something better planned for His children. The book of Hebrews was written to people who lived with disappointments and doubts and needed to see clearly what makes Jesus worthy of worship and pursuit. The thorough and practical book study of Hebrews aims to direct hope to Jesus. “Psalm 23: The Shepherd With Me” is a seven-week DVD-based study by Jennifer Rothschild that points women to the powerful truths contained in the familiar Psalm, including that God is See Change Of Pace South pg 7

Students Hack Their Way Into Second Place At State Event A team of students from Penn Manor and Hempfield high schools was a top finisher in a statewide hacking competition held recently at Hershey High School. Penn Manor sophomores Kyler Stigelman and Aidan Lewis and senior Tristen Martin, along with Hempfield sophomore Michael Pagano, placed second overall in HackHershey, a 12-hour programming competition that attracted 21 student teams from across Pennsylvania. The projects were judged on originality, technical difficulty, polish, and usefulness. The Penn Manor/Hempfield team developed an app called Face2Password that uses facial recognition software to assist people who forget their passwords. “The team had a fully working program completed in less than 10 hours, which was really impressive,” said Gina Kostelich, Penn Manor Student Help Desk specialist, who helped

Talk Will Focus On Gen. Custer The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a presentation, “George Armstrong Custer, From Ohio to Gettysburg,” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. The speaker will be Bruce R. Liddic, an expert and researcher on the life and times of U.S. Army Gen. George Armstrong Custer. Liddic is the author of three books and several dozen magazine articles about Custer, the latest of which appeared in Research Review, a publication of Little Big Horn Associates Inc. Liddic’s presentation, featuring visuals on PowerPoint, will trace the life of Custer from his birth in Ohio to his education at West Point, from which he graduated last in his class, as well as his experience at Gettysburg. will hold a designer bag bingo on Friday, Jan. 25. In the case of snow, the event will take place on Friday, Feb. 1. The event will be held at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. The doors will open at 5 p.m., and games begin at 6 p.m. Prizes will include designer bags and purses as well as giveaway drawing baskets. Food will be served, including walking tacos, hot dogs, and chili. Tickets may be purchased in advance by emailing pm2019postprom@gmail .com. They will also be available at the door for a higher fee. All proceeds will benefit Penn Manor Post Prom 2019, a chaperoned, overnight event held for students after Penn Manor’s prom.
