40 Years Of Smooth Salin’ By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Wilshire Hills community west of Lancaster city has undergone changes over the past four decades, but one thing has stayed the same - the commitment to hosting a neighborhood yard sale. “This is the 40th annual sale,” said organizer Cheryl
Schmidt. “We are trying to re-engage our community to come together and support one another, especially at this time.” The yard sale was started by the Wilshire Hills Civic Organization, with Mary Coldren at the helm. The committee began planning in February each year, and the group’s hard work paid off with high attendance. Neighbors noted that people from other municipalities would eagerly await the sale, and the streets would be packed with vehicles. “Over the years, the word spread - not just to the city but all over the county - that this was a decent yard sale. It was safe, and people liked the things for sale. They were good deals,” resident Bob McCune commented. When Schmidt and her family moved to Wilshire Hills 15 years ago, the majority of the residents were age 75 and older. The median age dropped as younger families with small children moved in. Simultaneously, participation in the yard sale slowly decreased. “It is our hope that with increased promotion and a renewed sense of passion in organization, we See Wilshire Hills Yard Sale pg 4
Contest Invites Sewists To “Make It With Wool” By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The majority of the bolts in a typical fabric store will be filled with natural fibers like cotton or manufactured fibers like polyester. However, there is usually at least one section dedicated to wool, and garments made from those fabrics are the focus of the annual Make It With Wool contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association. The contest is designed to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns. “Wool is a wonderful fiber to work with,” said director Linda See Make It With Wool pg 5
Cara Weil of Lancaster placed second in adult division in the state Make It With Wool contest last year. The deadline to enter the 2020 event is Sept. 4.

Volunteerism Is A Family Trait For Dietrichs When the late Hempfield High School home economics teacher Mary Dietrich volunteered at the YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, from 1967 to 1973, she was usually accompanied by her children, Wendy and Stephen. “She would often bring us
along because she didn’t have child care, so we joined the other kids there,” Wendy explained. Mary taught home economics for adults, and the children also tagged along on grocery shopping trips, when Mary helped her clients to maximize their budgets and food stamps. As a young man, Stephen and a friend ran a small painting business during a summer spent visiting an aunt in Arizona. Following graduation
from college and a few years working in New York, Stephen returned to Lancaster County in 1988 and opened an exterior painting business in Millersville. He named the venture Ville Painters Inc. and employed college students. Last year, Wendy joined her brother as the director of marketing and community connections for Ville Painters. Wendy previously spent much of her career working with nonprofits on the West Coast, so part of her responsibilities at Ville Painters is to find ways to See YWCA Lancaster pg 5
Ville Painters Inc. employees repainted the ceilings and other structures in the lobby of the YWCA Lancaster building on June 26. The service was a gift from siblings Stephen and Wendy Dietrich, whose mother, the late Mary Dietrich, volunteered at the YWCA 50 years ago.
Hospice Labor Day Auction To Be Held Virtually By Francine Fulton
Traditionally, Hospice & Community Care (HCC) holds its annual Labor Day Auction at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, and the event features nearly 10,000 items on the auction block and a variety of food selections sold on-site. Nearly 3,500 people attend the two-day event annually.
This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event has been scaled down and will be held virtually from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Tuesday, Sept. 15. “This is our 26th year, and we’ve held it in different places over the years because it has grown exponentially,” said Coco Minardi, donor relations manager. “The first auction we
had was in an outdoor area at a fire company. We made $1,800. Last year we raised $877,000. It is the backbone of our fundraising operation here at hospice.” Items featured at the auction See Labor Day Auction pg 4
A variety of items, including quilts, jewelry and sports memorabilia, will be offered as part of a Hospice & Community Care virtual auction to be held from Sept. 1 through 15.
