Parkesburg Community Day To Offer Family Fun Parkesburg Community Day has a new date and a new look, and the annual event promises a new atmosphere of family fun, great music and fireworks.
Last year, Community Day was held in August, but excessive temperatures were burdensome. “The weather we had took its toll on people. That’s one of the reasons we moved it back to July,” Assetto explained. “We just thought it would be a better time.”
Set for Saturday, July 8, rain or shine, at Minch Park, 400 West St., Parkesburg, the event will begin at 4 p.m. with a community picnic. Local residents are invited to bring their chairs or blankets and their favorite picnic meal or make purchases at the food trucks that will be on hand at the event.
Parkesburg Community Day is organized by the Parkesburg Area Special Events Committee with help from the Parkesburg Area Business Association and Parkesburg Borough. There is no admission charge for Community Day, but any donations received will be distributed to local charities.
The menus for food vendors are not set at this point, but members of the Southern Chester County Babe Ruth League will serve hot dogs and hamburgers to fit the family picnic atmosphere of the event. Alcoholic beverages will not be permitted in the park.
Parkesburg Community Day also takes time to honor local veterans. Last year, World War II veterans were highlighted. As always, all veterans will be recognized, but for 2017, there will be special emphasis on Korean War veterans.
By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
This year, the event has been scaled back from the level of past Community Days, with a more relaxed atmosphere. The Firefighter’s Challenge will not be held this year, but members of the Keystone Valley Fire Department will display equipment and share their knowledge of firefighting and fire prevention. Members of the Parkesburg Police Department will also be on-site, and local businesses will set up displays.
Parkesburg Area Special Events Committee vice president and borough manager Jim Thomas (left) and committee president Jack Assetto are among those planning Parkesburg Community Day for July 8 in Minch Park. “This year, it’s a different event. There will be some exhibits, but nothing the size of last year,” Assetto noted.
committee member Joe Reali said. “I suggest they register ahead of time so we can be more organized.”
A new feature of Community Day will be a kickball tournament. Local churches and other groups are invited to form teams for the firstever Parkesburg Community Churches Outreach (PCCO) Kickball Tournament. Preregistration for the tournament is requested by Monday, July 3.
Music will become the main attraction from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., as the West Chester Swing Kings will perform music of all kinds. As darkness falls, Community Day will finish with a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.
“It’s open to everybody and anybody who can organize a small team,”
