Parkesburg Community Day Will Offer Something for Everyone By Marcella Peyre-Ferry The third annual Parkesburg Community Day is set for Saturday, Aug. 13, with activities and events for every age and interest. Festivities will begin with the popular Fountain Inn 5K run. The race will start at noon at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Gay Street. There will be T-shirts and refreshment certificates for entrants, along with trophies for the race winners. This year, there will be a new course for the race. “It will run on the south side of town this year. We’re anticipating construction on part of the old course, so we had to move it,” event organizer Jack Assetto said. “It’s pretty flat this year compared to last year. We’re hoping to get a couple of hundred people this year.” To participate in the 5K Run, readers may register in advance

online for a discounted fee at www.runtheday.com. Registration may also be made on-site the morning of the race. At 1:30 p.m., following the race, Community Day activities will move to Minch Park, located on Third Avenue in Parkesburg. This year, there will be a new artisans’ tent, where talented artists working in all media will have their works on display. “We have commitments from some very good artists and wood carvers and potters. It’s not crafts; this is all actual art,” Assetto said. There will also be a large tent filled with vendors representing local businesses. Booths with information from government and service organizations will be set up, as well. The Octorara Football Booster Club will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries. One of the big attractions of

Jack Assetto is one of the main organizers for the third annual Parkesburg Community Day, set for Saturday, Aug. 13.

Community Day is the Firefighter’s Challenge. This year, the focus of the event will be on junior firefighters. “It will have a different format this year,” Assetto said. “We’re gearing it to the kids this year because we wanted some kind of activity to keep them happy all afternoon.” This year’s antique and classic car show is expected to be even bigger and better than last year. There will also be a veterans’ exhibit, and a World War II reenactment group will be on hand. Music will also be a big feature of Community Day. In the afternoon, Side Two, a contemporary soft rock band, will perform live. “In the evening, we’re going to have a special treat for everybody,” Assetto said. “From 6 to 9 p.m., we’re going to have a performance by the West Chester Swing Kings, which is an 18-piece big band, and there will be room for dancing.” A catered chicken barbecue will

be available beginning at 3:30 p.m. to eat at the park or take out. The menu will include a chicken leg and thigh or a half-chicken, along with baked beans, coleslaw, a roll, butter, a brownie and a beverage. Advance tickets for the chicken barbecue can be purchased at https://parkesburg-area-specialevents.ticketleap.com/chickendinner, or they may be purchased in person at the Parkesburg Borough Hall and other locations in town. Tickets may also be available on-site at the event while supplies last. The evening will end with a bang with a spectacular fireworks display at dark. “We skipped a year, but lots of people are requesting it, so we went back to fireworks,” Assetto said. Parkesburg Community Day is a free event designed to benefit the entire community. Proceeds from sponsors and other fees go to support community causes that

Comm unity Day benefit local residents, including the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach, Keystone Valley Fire Department, Parkesburg Library and Parkesburg Point. “This year, there’s an effort to build a new veterans memorial in front of the firehouse to consolidate memorials there for the veterans of all wars, and we’re taking that (project)

3 on as one of our charities as well,” Assetto said. “Our first year, we donated $6,500 to local charities and nonprofits. Last year we donated $13,000. This year we’re expecting to go above that.” For more information and updates about Community Day, readers may visit www.facebook. com/parkesburgcommunityday. 5K Planned On Community Day The Fountain Inn 5K will be presented on Saturday, Aug. 13, as part of Parkesburg Community Day. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Gay Street, next to Minch Park. The race will start at noon. The 5K course will run through the streets of Parkesburg. The route has been changed this year because of construction and will be primarily focused in the Parkesburg Knoll area. The registration fee includes a T-shirt, a beverage and a sandwich. The event was given its name because Parkesburg at one time was called Fountain Inn. The name “Fountain Inn” was changed to “Parkesburgh” (with an H) in 1839 and to “Parkesburg” (without an H) in 1894. For more information or to register, readers may visit www.runtheday.com/registration/race_info/fountaininn-5k or www.facebook.com/parkesburgcommunity day. n

KVFD To Present Junior Firefighter’s Challenge

According to KVFD public information officer Pete Mango, youths will have an opportunity to run an age-appropriate Firefighter’s Challenge, navigating obstacles and simulated tasks normally associated with fire ground operations. All who complete the course will earn

a KVFD youth T-shirt. Each child will be partnered with a firefighter who will help and coach him and her through the course. Organizers stress that the challenge is not a competition.
