Parkesburg Community Day To Return With More Fun For All

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry The first Parkesburg Community Day last year was such an overwhelming success that it is back this year with more ex citing events for families to enjoy.

Set for Saturday, Aug. 8, the event will run from 11 a.m. to approx imately 7 p.m. in Minch Park, rain or shine.

In response to feedback from the inaugural event last year, there are some changes to the Community Day that should make it even better. The fireworks and block party features have been eliminated in favor of more centralized activities focused around Minch Park.

The day will begin with a 5K run and, new this year, a 1-mile walk. Signup will be at 8 a.m. on Gay Street, followed by the 5K and the 1-mile walk.

The awards ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on the stage. The children’s bike races will begin after the awards ceremony has concluded, at approx imately 10:30 a.m.

Events will then move to the park for the rest of the day. Vendors and informational booths will be set up under tents at the park. More than a dozen food vendors are ex pected to attend with a wide variety of tasty offerings.

Two stages will be set up for live entertainment. Bands providing music will include Neonalie, Syde 2 , and O le 4 4 2 . Musicians from Galena Brass will stroll through the park throughout the day. There will also be dance

demonstrations, a professional sword swallower and a car show, with trophies awarded based on the attendees’ votes.

Special O perations Warriors of Carlisle will have an informational trailer open for tours, the National Guard Striker Force from Sadsburyville will bring two vehicles, and a number of fire trucks and emergency vehicles will be on display.

O ne of the most popular returning events of the day is the Firefighters’ Challenge. “ This year it has been renamed the Frank Haas Memorial Firefighters’ Challenge because of his concern for the local fire departments. He was the spearhead behind the consolidation of the local fire companies,” said Jack Assetto, president of the Parkesburg Area Special Events Committee.

Children will enjoy the foam ball battle on the tennis court, as well as sack races and other fun events. “ There’s something for everyone,” Assetto said. “ Anybody in the family can find something to do that day.”

New this year will be a cake and pie baking contest. Also new is the live auction, set to begin at 5:15 p.m. Items offered for bids will include prints by local artists and a one-of-a-kind quilt that features 35 images of Parkesburg in the past. “ The quilt was donated by former Parkesburg resident Mary Mowery Tennant. It’s the only one in ex istence,” Assetto said.

Firefighters' Challenge Planned on Community Day

Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD), Parkesburg, will present a Firefighters’ Challenge as part of Community Day in Parkesburg on Saturday, Aug. 8, in Minch Park. The event was recently renamed - with the permission of the family - to the Frank Haas Memorial Firefighters’ Challenge, in honor of Haas, a Sadsbury Township supervisor and supporter of the KVFD who passed away from cancer in March.

As part of the challenge, firefighters will race the clock in full gear, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), while navigating obstacles and simulated tasks normally associated with fire/ground operation such as over/under obstacles, hose burners, stretching hose, forcible entry/sledgehammer strikes, dummy drag and lifting/ carrying ladders.

Participants must provide their own gear, including a turnout coat, bunker pants and structural boots, a hood, fire gloves and helmet.

SCBA will be provided, and no mask will be required. The first heat will begin at 11:15 a.m.

The first-prize cash prize will be $300, courtesy of a sponsorship from West Sadsbury Township. The second-place winner will also receive cash, and third place will earn a $100 gift card. Fourth prize will be a streamlight flashlight from a fire department equipment supplier. There will also be prizes of knives, hats, T-shirts, emblems, coins and patches from vendors.

Last year’s winners were assistant chief Mike Harris of the Cochranville Fire Company, who set a blistering pace and placed first, with First West Chester’s firefighter Brian Barrett, a KVFD alumnus, in second and KVFD firefighter Scott Clements following in third.

In the Junior Division, KVFD junior firefighter Peter Mango won first, with junior firefighter Nathan Gathercole in second and junior firefighter Hunter Stiebritz in third.

The Parkesburg History Group was formed to inform and educate the public about the history of Parkesburg, which was formerly known as Fountain Inn. Local historian Gerry Treadway, a member of the group, reported the following information.

The building formerly known as the Fountain Inn Tavern was built along the Strasburg Road in 1734 and became a local gathering place for Scottish/Irish settlers in the area. It was a stopover for those traveling eastward to Philadelphia or westward to Lancaster. It was also a popular stop for cattlemen who were moving herds of animals to Philadelphia markets.

In 182 5, more than 4 6,000 animals of various species were rested and fed at the Fountain Inn stockyards, located across the street from the inn. A post office was established there in 1830 with Nathan Frame as postmaster and doing three dollars’ worth of business per month.

The famous French military person Marquis de Lafayette is said to have visited the inn during a return tour of the area in 182 4 . Lafayette originally came from France during the Revolutionary War to assist George Washington. Lafayette became a major general, and he participated and was wounded in the Battle of Brandywine at Chadds Ford in 1777.

The building, which still stands at 131-133 Main St., has been a private residence for many years.

The town name of Fountain Inn was changed to Parkesburgh (with an H) in 1839 and to Parkesburg (without an H) in 189 4 .
